“Shining, can't you see it shining? Ohhhhhhhhh!”
In this episode of Hollywood Live, Tanya Hart pays tribute to another entertainment legend we've lost—Frankie Beverly, the lead singer and songwriter of the iconic soul and funk band Maze. Known for timeless hits like “Golden Time of Day,” “Joy and Pain,” and “Happy Feelings,” Frankie Beverly's music has been the soundtrack to countless summer cookouts, family reunions, and unforgettable live concerts for over five decades. He passed away at the age of 77, as announced by his family, though the cause of death was not disclosed. Tanya reflects on Beverly's remarkable career that began in 1970 with his group Raw Soul in Philadelphia. It was Marvin Gaye who guided the group to change their name to Frankie Beverly and Maze, setting them on a path to musical greatness. Their debut album in 1977 was just the start of a series of hits that spanned decades. Beverly was a beloved staple at the Essence Festival, where fans honored him this past summer by wearing white. Though he's no longer with us, Frankie Beverly's Silky Soul sounds will live on for generations to come. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Sales is a tough enough job without having additional complications. Clients can be very demanding, often we depend on logistics departments and production divisions, to get the purchase to the buyer. We can't control the quality, but we have total responsibility, as far as the client is concerned. There is the constant pressure of producing revenue results, with bosses always pushing hard on the numbers. If we are successful and we are doing well, you would think that life would be good. Fat chance of that. We know the emotional roller coaster that is the sales life and you are only ever as good as your last deal. Perhaps with a little bit of success should come some respite from the turmoil of hitting the numbers. I hate to break this to you, but no such luck! Our sales colleagues, by definition, cannot all be equally successful. The Pareto Principle says that the top 20% of salespeople will account for 80% of the revenue numbers and commissions. So that means the other 80% of the team are scrambling around for the remaining 20% of the sales. People come into sales from different backgrounds, with different levels of experience, with degrees of motivation and they join at different points in the annual results cycle. This means that some will be in the top group, a chunk will be in the middle and the rest are at the bottom. In the West, the usual way sales teams are managed is based on the Darwinian theory of the survival of the fittest. Those who can't cut it are cut loose. Those who can continue to produce get to stay. If they can survive a couple of recessions, they may even be moved up into management positions. This means that those at the bottom are basically on their own. This should spur them on to greater efforts to move up the sales ranks and to strike for the top position in the sales results table. Yet often this doesn't happen. In Japan, most salespeople are on a salary and bonus structure, rather than salary and commission. Almost nobody is on 100% commission arrangements and nobody wants that type of sales structure. This means the financial ambition or necessity to get ahead in sales is not as strong as we see in the West. Often the base salaries are large by foreign standards and so people can live on the base. In some cases, there can be pushback against the top salespeople, by those failing, because the successful are making everyone else look bad. Snide comments can be made, negative inferences drawn and a host of other petty signals that says “we don't like you”. This is driven by spite, jealousy and envy. This is their “the way to build the tallest building in town is to tear down all the taller buildings” approach to greatness. In a small sales team this can be very uncomfortable. There is a degree of mutual cooperation involved in sales teams and this is usually where the disputes arise. Who owns the client, who owns the deal, and how is the revenue commission going to be split up? If the sales politicians in the firm get going, they can really do damage to the morale of the organisation. These people are usually excellent at whining, gathering whiners together and hosting whine parties. They use their energy to pull down those who are successful, instead of trying to become a success themselves. When you are the top performer or if you are in the top ranks, you can feel you have become a target. Instead of just worrying about getting sales done, you now have to waste precious energy walking around on egg shells, to avoid criticism from your colleagues. This is all kept below the radar, so the boss is often unaware of what is really going on. However, in many cases they don't care anyway. They are looking for numbers and they don't want to have to deal with personalities and sales soap operas in the office. If the bosses are any good, they would be sorting out the toxic few, but often they don't. The top salespeople are razor focused on serving clients and doing all the hard yards needed to get the sale, so they are not politically minded. The whole mess gets made worse because in a declining demographic, many organisations are looking at their salesperson retain strategies. They do this because they know they cannot easily recruit enough salespeople replacements. This means the internal war goes on for much longer that it should. We lose sight of the external competition and fight amongst ourselves. Bosses, hear me, sack the toxic! If you don't, you will find the whole organisation will start failing as the wrong culture takes command. If you are one of the top salespeople, insulate and isolate yourself from the whiners. They don't work as hard or as long, so there is plenty of opportunity to get to the work, without having to engage with them much. Winners start early and concentrate on their Golden Time between 9.00am-5.00pm on speaking with clients, not idiots in the office. This Golden Time is reserved for client meetings and to create more business. All of the administrivia needs to be fitted in around those hours. Writing proposals, holding sales meetings, collecting data, putting together sales information, recording activities in the CRM, etc., are what happens outside of Golden Time. These days, thanks to technology, this can be done remotely. Keep the time in the office with losers to an absolute minimum and protect yourself from their influence. Remember, you are superman or superwoman and they are kryptonite.

Tackling the story most requested by Dark House listeners, Alyssa and Hadley come face to face with 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, the Dutch-Colonial house that inspired The Amityville Horror. The best-selling-book-turned-hit-movie tells the dramatic tale of George and Kathy Lutz, a young newlywed couple who purchased 112 Ocean Avenue in December of 1975, just a year after previous owners Ron and Louise DeFeo and four of their children were brutally murdered in the home. Having fled from the house only 28 days after moving in, the Lutzes told friends and neighbors that "unseen forces" drove them out. Looking to understand why today—despite the fact that the movie remains a classic—the Lutz's story is widely regarded as a hoax, the hosts dig for nuggets of truth buried under a mountain of lies and internet theories. They take a closer look at the DeFeo case and what could've possibly motivated Butch DeFeo, Ron and Louise's eldest son, to commit such a heinous crime, as well as what exactly the Lutzes said happened to them in those 28 days living at the house, and how their credibility has been called into question since. Plus, they discover why the next family to move in after the Lutzes was also forced to abandon the home. Content advisory - this episode covers miscarriage and baby loss Maria Moynihan is a Features Editor with Irish Country Living of the Irish Farmers Journal and a columnist for Irish Country Magazine. As an accomplished writer and journalist, Maria is used to telling other people's stories but today she is telling us her own very personal and moving story about her beautiful son Danann who was diagnosed with Trisomy-18, a life limiting condition, during pregnancy and was stillborn in October 2019. This is a heartbreaking story but one that is also filled with hope as Maria talks about how she learned to stay in the moment as she made the most of Danann's short but very precious life and how the kindness of friends, family and strangers and the amazing care she received at Cork University Maternity Hospital from the clinical bereavement team helped Maria and her husband Danny find a way through it. We also talk about coping with pregnancy after loss after Maria had her daughter Fallon fourteen months after Danann was born and how she has coped with two recent miscarriages which she describes as a lonely experience and hard to talk about, even though she has been very open about her grief before. One in four pregnancies end in loss and yet there still seems to be a lack of information and openness about miscarriage that can allow people to be more prepared to cope when it happens. This is a very special conversation that will stay with us and we feel privileged to share it with you and be part of seeing Danann's legacy continue. A special Parents in Tech episode celebrating International Womens' Day. Against all odds, Queenie had a miracle daughter after many years of waiting, defying a medical diagnosis that meant she wouldn't have been able to have a child. Queenie narrates how she was blessed with Angela but then she faced a number of post-natal challenges along with the start of the pandemic. This challenging ordeal inspired her to share her story to help and uplift others who may be facing a similar situation, motivating her to create the platform "Untold Stories", a series of inclusion stories from employees of different facets of life. She also describes the mental well-being aspect of her ordeal. She explains the relevance and importance of mental health in the work place and her efforts as a Mental Health First Aider to improve how people perceive mental health and to remove stigma. Born in Hong Kong, raised in Australia, and now based in Singapore, Queenie is the Executive Director at Standard Chartered Bank, heading strategy and transformation. She has almost 2 decades of experience working with different banks as head of technology and digital transformation leader. She created a platform at Standard Chartered for inclusion stories to be told. She is a Diversity & Inclusion and mental health champion and has a 2-year-old daughter, Angela. Queenie explains in detail how she associates emotions with objects as a tool to help her child regulate her emotions in the "Terrible Twos" period. She also notes that while the pandemic has been quite a tough time, it afforded the opportunity to spend more time with her family and experience those pivotal moments in her baby's development. Her earlier challenge was adapting to the mindset of motherhood and "mom guilt" of combining work with raising her kid. To accomplish this, she set boundaries using the "Golden Time" concept to allow herself times of flexibility and family during the day. In raising her child Queenie has learned empathy, how to focus on what is important, and ability to let things go; all tools required that made her a better leader today. She encourages leaders to be intentional about the wellbeing of the employees planning to return to work by keeping them updated on new changes in the workplace and roles available. She discusses the role of a Mental First Aider and the effort and resources the organization has invested to support employees towards early identification and tackling of mental health challenges. She is grateful for her husband for role modeling shared responsibilities within the household and supported her career aspirations. As the best role modeling for children starts from home, for the next generation to understand what equality truly means. Queenie encourages mothers; “Be kind to yourself, it takes a village to raise a kid. You are amazing because it is one of the hardest jobs. Pat yourself and appreciate those who have helped you” To get in touch with Queenie, find her on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/queeniechan1?originalSubdomain=sg Don’t forget to head over to www.parents.fm to stay up to date with new and previous episodes. Bret and Shira are back! In honor of a listener's donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the necromancers let them pick the theme: anime about 1960's Japan. If there's one takeaway from Japan's "golden 60s," it's that girls with pigtails run the world full stop. Between Umi in From Up on Poppy Hill and Saya in Blood: The Last Vampire, is there anything they can't do? Come for the groovy anime goodness and then stick around the duo's hot take remixes including... One long period joke!?! Donate to LLS

CBS Radio Mystery Theater was a multi-genre anthology. It aired over the CBS network almost daily from 1974 to 1982 and included 1,399 episodes. Episodes shared a time slot with the top-of-the-hour news summary. After subtracting the news and commercials, CBSRMT was left with a 45-minute format. The series was hosted, for the most part, by the late E.G. Marshall. The series creator and producer Himan Brown oversaw scripts and, though the daily format restricted the depth of sound effects, each show averaged 45 minutes. The writing was intelligent and the stories were thought-provoking. CBSRMT presented a bit of everything—science fiction, historical drama, ghost stories, horror—but the majority of episodes were murder mysteries, often with a supernatural bent. Because of the enormous volume of episodes, this archive could take up a LOT of time, to the detriment of other areas of this site. Therefore, I've decided to limit the archive to shows which best fit into the Plot Spot's chosen venue of sci-fi, horror, etc.
In our first episode, we introduce the world to the Anime Coffeehouse and discuss two anime we finished recently, Golden Time and Death Note.
