Winter is coming, and there's an exciting slate of movies coming our way. From big budget spectacles to Oscar bait dramas to fun family flicks, winter has it all, and we're giving our rundown--cage match style--of them all. Not only that, but--Steven Soderbergh has been talking about retirement for YEARS. And now, in 2013, the time has come. Is the film he goes out on his “Citizen Kane,” his “Heaven's Gate,” his “Megalopolis”? It's a movie about Liberace and his lover, Scott Thorson—you be the judge! Today, we are sneaking in with a Steven Soderbergh flick that did not have a theatrical release but rather premiered on TV. The film? Behind the Candelabra starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon as Liberace and the jaded lover who wrote the book from which the movie was based. Speaking of based, HBO was the only company based enough to make a movie deemed “too gay” by the smooth brains at various studios. The result was two great actors getting what might be the best roles of their lives. But, does this hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate diamond-studded assholes and cheeky fuckboys as we do our best to decide if this flick still catches our eye or if we'd prefer something a little younger and prettier.

Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.THANK YOU FOR LISTENING

Bill Hughes goes behind the scenes and shares tales from the Steven Soderbergh-directed film Behind The Candelabra.
Just three Bad Dads this week and since that's three for the price of none, only you can judge whether that represents value for money. With all of us having equine obsessed daughters it seems suprising that it has taken us this long to discuss the Top 5 Horses, especially as reviewing our back catalog demonstrates that we've held a stable interest in them. We've reviewed a couple of Steven Soderbergh movies on the pod already – MAGIC MIKE, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA - but after the latter's release in 2013, Soderbergh decided to retire from filmmaking, citing the "absolutely horrible" mistreatment of directors by Hollywood producers, before returning with 2017's LOGAN LUCKY. And I say he retired but it wasn't exactly 4 years of sitting around and twiddling his thumbs. In that time, he composed an edit of HER for Spike Jonze (which he didn't use but said helped him finish the movie), posted edits of classic movies such as 2001 and PSYCHO on his website, edited the Magic Mike sequel MAGIC MIKE XXL and then produced and directed two ten episode seasons of Cinemax medical drama THE KNICK. Anyway, after he'd stopped all that mucking about, Soderbergh directed and edited this heist comedy based on a screenplay by his wife Julie Asner, in which Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) loses his job as a bobcat operator beneath Charlotte Motor Speedway due to being deemed an insurance liability and so plans a perfect crime in retribution. Together with his brother Clyde (Adam Driver), a former veteran with a missing hand, and his sister Mellie (Riley Keough) the boys set out to break the Logan family curse and rob the venue on its biggest weekend of the year, the NASCAR race on Memorial Day weekend. Well-made, fun and with a good bit of the old cultural critiquing go on around America's treatment of disability and the ugliness of the insurance industry whilst giving a platform to show a little warmth to the less featured red states, we're glad he decided to get off his lazy arse and start working again. From the people that brought you OCTONAUTS comes this not quite as charming redo of the same general principal, with a more cynical eye on penetrating the US market and toy tie-ins. We look at THE CREATURE CASES (Netflix), which came highly recommended by my youngest and sees Sam Snow, a snow leopard, and Kit Casey, a fox, working as agents for CLADE, the Covert League of Animal Detective Experts. It's monsoon season and the animals are escaping the perilous jungle floor to get to higher ground using the bullet train style Monsoon Express. But when the chief engineer is bitten by one of the venomous snakes aboard, it becomes a race against time to locate the perpetrator, extract their fang juice and synthesise an antivenom before the train crashes, killing them all. SPOILER ALERT, they do in fact all die.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

One of Adam Bricker's favorite things about being a cinematographer is the opportunity to collaborate with different filmmakers, try something new and make each project the best it can be. His most recent project is the HBO Max comedy series Hacks, which just earned him an Emmy nomination for best cinematography. Adam was given the scripts for the first two episodes, and loved the pilot script, which opens with a long Steadicam single shot following behind the main character, Deborah Vance, played by Jean Smart, for two minutes, until her character is finally revealed in the dressing room vanity mirror. Adam knew it's a rare thing to find a half-hour comedy with that level of cinema, and he was excited to shoot the show. Hacks takes place in Las Vegas, about a legendary comedian who is losing relevance and fading from the spotlight. Adam and show creator Lucia Aniello used vintage Las Vegas movies and photos as a reference point, as well as films such as Soderberg's Behind The Candelabra and Judy with Renée Zellweger. Adam likes to set the look based on how the viewer is supposed to feel, and he makes notes in his scripts about what emotions should be felt in each scene. Most of Hacks is filmed on tripods and dollies, but for the verbal duels between characters Deborah Vance and Ava, her young comedy writer/protégé, Adam chose to shoot handheld, which gives those scenes more energy and naturalism. Lighting on the show goes from naturalistic, when Deborah is at home or when Ava is in Los Angeles, contrasted with vintage glamorous stage lighting when Deborah performs her comedy act. Adam grew up in Chicago and attended film school there before attending the USC summer cinema program, which inspired him to transfer to USC and continue studying cinematography. After college, Adam began taking as many jobs as he could, and planned to work his way up through the camera department, before a DP mentor suggested he buy a camera and take as many cinematography jobs as possible. He and a group of friends invested in a Red One digital camera, and Adam shot dozens of music videos and low-budget films. The Netflix series Chef's Table has taken Adam all over the world. As one of the primary DPs of Chef's Table, Adam and show creator David Gelb have established the artistic look of the modern cuisine documentary, which has since been imitated by countless other food shows. When the show began, Adam had never shot a documentary before, so he had a more cinematic approach to the show, only using prime lenses and no zoom lenses. For him, it's been a dream job to explore new places, eat amazing food at excellent restaurants and work with good friends on the crew. Iconic Fashion For The Screen. Emmy award winning costume designer Ellen Mirojnick’s work has brought us stylishly iconic film + tv characters for decades. There’s Ellen’s infamous Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, and her Alex Forest played by Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. Ellen’s look for Sharon Stone as Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct is unforgettable. There’s Diane Lane’s sleek look that Mirojnick deems “Parisian”, in Unfaithful, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s uptown sophistication in A Perfect Murder. Cocktail, Speed, Jacob's Ladder, What Women Want---the list of her projects is as grand as it is long. Mirojnick created a whole new world of showgirl-chic, her costumes almost entirely the reason why the campy film Showgirls became a cult favorite. After the film’s release, it seemed everyone wanted a little sparkle and a little Versace in their lives. Steven Soderbergh’s Behind The Candelabra won her an Emmy. And of course, there’s Bridgerton. On this podcast, Ellen talks all about the look and says she’s never seen such fanfare tied to her work like her work for the Shondaland series for Netflix. Yet another example of how Mirojnick’s designs trickle into culture and inform the way we dress. On this podcast we of course discuss her collaborations with the world’s most talented and esteemed directors like Soderbergh, Oliver Stone, Tony and Ridley Scott, Adrian Lyne, Nancy Myers, and more. We do a deep dive into the looks she created for her most famous film characters, and she takes us behind the scenes. There’s a story about she got kicked out of Parsons School Of Design, one about her first costume job on a soft porn film, and how a certain gentleman attempted to take credit for her work on Wall Street. Practically a painting prodigy at age 3, Bronx born and New York City bred Ellen Mirojnick was born to create. Her keen and transformational use of color, and the seductiveness and silhouetted style of her work will live on forever and continue to inspire. We talked to her about the future projects she’d like to tackle, the uniform she wears when working, her desk space, a very particular Picasso, and more, all of which you can discover and shop here: 1. WV elects their first trans councilwoman. We’re guilty pleasure enjoying RuPauls Drag Race. This leads right in to watching Behind the Candelabra. Who else remembers Liberace? Ford Bronco taking advantage of 90’s nostalgia and odd coincidence. NASCAR has been progressive about the Confederate Flag, and they certainly surprised, warmed my heart and made me cry […]
Today my guest is Thure Riefenstein, an actor, director, and producer best known for his work on THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, 12 MONKEYS, and BEHIND THE CANDELABRA. I had him on the show to discuss his latest film TORPEDO U-235. The film is about World War II: Resistance fighters who accept a suicide mission to deliver a stolen Nazi submarine carrying atomic uranium. It's one of the best films I’ve seen this year and is currently available on VOD. Do yourself a favor and watch this film. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support
Well made biopic of the fascinating Liberace, with awards worthy turns from Matt Damon and Michael Douglas.

All hail the goddess, Kirsten Dunst, who just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is turning heads with her spectacular turn as Krystal Stubbs on the new Showtime series, On Becoming a God in Central Florida. Karen & Wynter dive deep into her under-appreciated career, focusing on her debut decade (the 1990s), as well as her rise to box-office domination (in the 2000s). Wynter calls new career opportunities in from the universe, while honing her taste-making and curatorial skills by indulging in a mini-marathon of Michael Douglas films. Karen finally plugs her fall book tour for Why Karen Carpenter Matters, and gives us another update on the bisexual modifications required of Bachelor in Paradise. The two also announce some exciting news about ep. 11--W2X's FIRST LIVE SHOW, which will be recorded in Oxford, Mississippi at Ole Miss with some very special guests. Plus, Nuo-Lingo tells us about who and what constitutes a "snack," while the SOTW will get your grooving, early aughts-style. In this episode I talk with Location Manager, Caleb Duffy.I have been working with Caleb Duffy for the past 3 years on the show VEEP and The Good Place, He's a super chill guy that no matter how rearranged the schedule gets and flying minute by minute he always keeps his cool. And believe me on VEEP things changed every thirty seconds sometimes. I know how hard he worked on VEEP to get the locations every episode… some episodes as many as 20 or more.In preparing for this interview I looked him up on IMDB, which I don't think I had before, and I had no idea the resume this guys has! And actually how many people we know in common. Caleb started in the early 2000's and as assistant location manager on projects like Erin Brokovish, Traffic, Oceans'11, Terminator 3, And location manager on Superman Returns, Into the WIld, The Artist, Behind the Candelabra, Thor, and Wine Country.. He's ;location managed TV shows including Greek, True Detective, The Good Place and VEEP.

Episode 49: This week we watched the HBO tv movie, Behind the Candelabra. We talked about the book Testo Junkie, Fake Teeth, Butt Sex and how this movie is much funnier than Brokeback Mountain
Also discussed: Lady Bird (2017), The Void (2016), American Fable (2016), The Gift (2015), The Fountain (2006), Behind The Candelabra (2013). Happy 51st episode Nic, Tys and Videotape!! This week, as we celebrate reaching the first of what will hopefully be many milestones at NT&V HQ, we're turning our attention to our favourite character in popular fiction, the man who has made a career out of wearing his underwear on the outside of his pants (also... being the greatest superhero of all time... that's probably important too), a character we hold very dear to our hearts, SUPERMAN! Which of course means it's time for volume #3 of our superhero-film discussion series "We Are Groot", as we discuss the incredibly divisive first film in the DCEU, 2013's MAN OF STEEL!!! Tys also gives us a horror/thriller 3-peat in What Did You Watch This Week?, we break down the somewhat underwhelming trailer for a much anticipated Pixar sequel in Talkin' Trailers, and Nic recommends a TV movie with a pair of very unexpected performances in Crossing The Streams. NEXT WEEK! It's almost Oscar week, but before we get there, we need a palate cleanser. With all the serious Oscar bait we've been slamming down, sometimes you just need to soak up a great comedy with a lot of heart. And that's exactly what we're talking about next week. This interview has a spoiler level of “Mirror Image”. SCOTT BAKULA has been recognized for his work in a variety of mediums, from feature films to television to musical theatre and more. Bakula is now starring as the lead agent for “NCIS: New Orleans.” As ‘NCIS Special Agent Pride,' Bakula's character is described as “the embodiment of New Orleans, a unique federal agent working in one of the country's most unique cities. He's driven by the need to do what's right, and he does it all with warmth, passion, strength and humor.' The “NCIS” spin-off is executive produced by Gary Glasberg and Mark Harmon. CCH Pounder, Lucas Black, and Zoe McLellan have also joined the New Orleans team. Bakula was recently nominated for an Emmy for his supporting role in the award-winning HBO Films Liberace biopic BEHIND THE CANDELABRA. Bakula reteamed with his THE INFORMANT! co-star Matt Damon and director Steven Soderbergh in the film that features Michael Douglas starring as the famed performer, and Damon as ‘Scott Thorson,' his young live-in lover. His fifth nomination (the previous four were for his work in “Quantum Leap”) was for Bakula's portrayal of ‘Bob Black,' the choreographer who introduced Liberace to Thorson. The film also enjoyed many nominations and several wins at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Currently, Bakula is starring in the new HBO dramedy “Looking” from creator/writer/executive producer Michael Lannan. In the series about three 30-something friends living in San Francisco grappling with the modern gay experience, Bakula recurs as ‘Lynn,' an attractive entrepreneur and pillar of the Castro community who befriends one of the series leads. HuffPost TV praised Bakula's performance, saying: “As he did in ‘Behind the Candelabra,' SCOTT BAKULA steals every scene he's in. He plays an older gay man who wryly observes the dating and mating habits of the younger generation, and he brought such warmth and depth to the character that one of my main takeaways from ‘Looking' is that BAKULA, who was similarly great in ‘Men of a Certain Age,' should be cast in just about everything. In any event, Bakula's presence and air of experience add weight and depth to the show!” Bakula has several projects in the can. He traveled to India to shoot the musical feature BASMATI BLUES with Brie Larson, Tyne Daly, and Donald Sutherland. He recently wrapped the feature ME HIM HER, the directorial debut from CHRONICLE screenwriter Max Landis. Bakula will play the middle-class Republican father of the film's lead character, a young Hollywood star (Luke Bracey) who comes out as gay in the comedy film about friendship and sexual identity. The movie will also stars Dustin Milligan, Jake McDormand, Emily Meade, and Geena Davis as Bakula's wife. Bakula also shot the indie feature ELSA AND FRED starring opposite Christopher Plummer and playing Shirley MacLaine's son ‘Gabriel,' a character described as “Elsa's conservative banker son, a bit stuffy and judgmental, who often argues with her about her spending habits.” The indie feature SNAP, in which Bakula c0-starred opposite Nikki Reed, Thomas Dekker, and Jason Priestley, premiered at the latest South-by-Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Bakula was last seen starring in the critically acclaimed TNT series “Men of a Certain Age,” with Ray Romano and Andre Braugher. The series focused on three best friends since college who are were each experiencing their own form of mid-life crises as they approach 50. Bakula received much buzz from critics and fans alike for his performance as ‘Terry,' a womanizing bachelor who becomes increasingly jaded as a fading actor, and is forced to consider beginning a “real career.” In between his many film projects Bakula was also seen guesting on “Law & Order: SVU” and recurred on the final episodes of “Desperate Housewives” as a love interest to Marcia Cross' character, through its finale. In 2011, Bakula made his UK stage debut in the world premiere of “Terrible Advice...

www.InspirationwithVal.com Podcast Episode 98 with Rachael Markarian: Summary: Rachael Markarian is an actress & dancer training throughout Boston, New York City, and Los Angeles. Despite being told she would never be a dancer based on a physical disability she was born with, Rachael immersed herself in the performing arts at a very young age. She fine tuned her skills while pursuing her dream to become a triple threat and now is an acclaimed actress and model in Hollywood. About how Rachael Markarian started her life as a dancer: 6:10 Rachael is the youngest in the family with her two elder brothers and was very shy as a child. She used to hide in her mother’s skirt because she was so shy! Her mother took her to dance classes so that she would learn to feel more comfortable with other people. Even though she was born with legs and hips that were completed inverted and needed to wear braces, she attended class - and hated it at first. It was hard, painful, and she had to work harder at it than the rest of the kids. When Rachael was 12 years old, she finally realized that she loved to dance. The power of positive thinking: 11:04 Rachael could have easily chosen not to pursue dancing because of her disability, but she challenged herself to work hard and rise about the situation. She used the power of positive thinking and never took failure as a finality, but always as an opportunity to do things better the next time. Rachael’s professional career 21:11 While Rachael worked as a model for awhile, she is not transitioning into her career as an actress. Rachael swears that one’s mentality sets them apart from others, and that it’s all about confidence and the vision you have for yourself. It’s so important to believe in yourself that you are doing what you are meant to do. Getting used of the rejection in the entertainment industry. 30:43 Rachael’s way of dealing rejection is by using redirection. Rachael’s perspective at tough auditions was to do her best, have fun with it, and take the opportunity to do what she loved and showcase her talent. Rachael’s gained respect and success: 42:19 Rachael now works as a professional dancer, touring and dancing alongside artists such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pink, Kanye West and Justin Timberlake to name a few. In addition, she's had much success as an actress in Film, TV and Commercials, allowing her to work with some of the industries top directors & producers. Rachael trained with Stella Adler's protégé, Arthur Mendoza at The Actors Circle Theatre in Hollywood for many years, fine tuning her skills and perfecting her technique. She now studies with Cameron Thor at Carter Thor Studios, and with Candy Kaniecki. Knowing there's an advantage to being a multifaceted entertainer, Rachael brings a lot to the table as an artist. You can see her in 2013 in Steven Soderbergh's new film with Michael Douglas, Behind The Candelabra, also the film Lucky Stiff, starring Jason Alexander, as well as Fuse TV's new show The Hustle. Rachael’s Greatest Advice: 49:05 “Find out what your heart beats for, what gets you excited, and then do that whether it’s a profession or hobby, and have a sense of excitement and gratitude!” Links: Twitter: @RachelMarkarian

Jed York, Jason Bateman and Rob Lowe... Shortly after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the Super Bowl L bid had been awarded to San Francisco, 49ers CEO Jed York dialed into "The Rich Eisen Podcast" to discuss the impact of the Super Bowl's golden anniversary being awarded to the city by the bay. Up next, Rich dials up actor Jason Bateman to discuss "Arrested Development," which re-launches on Netflix on Sunday. The show, which originally aired on FOX, was cancelled after just three seasons. The podcast wraps up with big-time Indianapolis fan Rob Lowe, who dials in to chat about his beloved Colts. Lowe shares his thoughts on the Colts' 2013 draft class and if he thinks they can return to the playoffs this season. The veteran actor also has a new project coming out this Sunday, "Behind The Candelabra," which details the life of Liberace (Michael Douglas) through the eyes of his much younger lover Scott Thorson (Matt Damon).
