Mental health is something that has become more talked about in youth as of late, as well as films also diving deeper into these themes but it has been a while since one fully embraces it. This film follows Grace, a counselor at a care unit for at-risk teens as she attempts to navigate their mental health as well as her own with past trauma. A film that has a weird effect that while it takes on dark tones, it actually feels pretty light, and that's a balance that not many films can have. This is a film that gives you a lot of stories with time for everyone, even Floyd, and fuck you Floyd

Megan chose a short film she shot called We’re All Alright, which she fell in love with as soon as she finished reading the script. She talks about the film’s central themes of depression and female friendship, what it was like working with a majority female team, and the challenges of filming on a fire escape. For the feature film, Megan stuck to the theme of mental health with Short Term 12, about young staff members working at a foster care facility. It’s an independent film that continues to find fans years after its release (2013) and is also known for its phenomenal ensemble of now critically acclaimed actors including Lakeith Stanfield, Brie Larson, Kaitlyn Dever, John Gallagher Jr., and Rami Malek.

0:56:33 Cube 1:04:17 The Witch 1:10:23 Darth Maul: Apprentice 1:14:38 Reality XL 1:20:47 Easy Rider 1:27:22 Napoleon Dynamite 1:31:22 Short Term 12 (spoilerfrei) 1:41:33 Short Term 12 (Spoilerpart) 1:52:53 Thema der nächsten Folge & Verabschiedung

Kaitlyn Dever's been adding titles to her filmography for quite a while now, but the one that had my jaw on the floor was her work in Destin Daniel Cretton's Short Term 12. I'll never forget seeing that film for the very first time and getting utterly overwhelmed by that wave of certainty that Dever would go on to do big things. From there, it was one impressive title after the next - Justified, Detroit and Beautiful Boy, just to name a few. Dever isn't just solidifying herself as one of the most talented stars of her generation, but she's also highlighting the fact that she's got an eye for powerful projects in the process.I was lucky enough to talk to Dever about her 2019 release Booksmart quite a few times over the course of that movie's run, and calling that experience a pleasure would be an understatement. Not only is Dever and the folks behind that film an utter joy to spend time with, but it's also a film that's making a positive impact as a highly entertaining comedy with thematic heft that makes it emboldening and inspiring. Then we got Dever's Netflix series Unbelievable in September of 2019, further cementing it as a landmark year for the actor. Not only did she score Critics' Choice and Golden Globe nominations for her performance, but Unbelievable is also a show that could truly make a difference by raising awareness of the effects of sexual assault. M. Elizabeth Hughes is a freelance film producer who grew up in south Georgia. After graduating from magna cum laude from Wesleyan College, she moved to Orange County and earned her M.F.A. in Film and Television Producing from Chapman University. Since then, she has made her career producing a wide variety of films and series with various filmmakers and financiers. She co-produced one of my favorite all time movies, SHORT TERM 12. She’s produced many studio features such as GIRLFRIEND’S DAY written by and starring Bob Odenkirk and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY starring Ben Schwartz and Noël Wells. Most recently, she produced the Amazon docuseries, LORENA, which reframes the infamous story surrounding Lorena Bobbit. During our chat, we take an unfiltered look into the challenges of working in physical production, the magic of making SHORT TERM 12, and reflect on the choices that got her to where she is today.

With Mark Lawson, Susan Stroman, the American theatre director and choreographer whose productions include the multi-award winning The Producers, talks about her new musical, The Scottsboro Boys. With music and lyrics by Kander and Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago), The Scottsboro Boys is based on the true story of a group of black teenagers in Alabama wrongly accused of rape, whose case became a milestone in the history of US civil rights. Short Term 12 is a drama set in a foster home for at-risk teenagers, written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (I Am Not a Hipster). Shown from the perspective of a care supervisor played by Brie Larson, the film explores the complex, dark and sometimes humorous life of those working and living within the care system. Film critic Catherine Bray reviews. Comedian Ross Noble turns TV host this week with a show called Freewheeling, in which he follows invitations he receives on Twitter - whether it's a chance to arrive unannounced at a sales conference, or to meet a man who has a large quantity of custard. He reflects on the spontaneity which this approach allows, and also reveals his views on the less spontaneous TV panel shows. Producer Claire Bartleet.
