In this episode, Johnnie talks to Mascha Deikova about the rapid development of AI and its potential impact on the filmmaking industry. Mascha is a filmmaker based in Austria and an active contributor to CineD. Instead of fearing AI, she chooses to understand and integrate it into her creative process. But is she right not to be afraid? Tune in to the discussion on the impact AI is having on the filmmaking industry, where they think it's leading us, and their take on the most important question - Should we be afraid of AI in filmmaking? Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by FilmConvert. Check it out at [16:24]. Embracing AI in filmmaking In the rapidly evolving world of technology, AI has become a hot topic, especially in creative industries like filmmaking. In this episode, Johnnie sits down with Mascha Deikova, a filmmaker based in Austria and a contributor to CineD, to explore the complex relationship between AI and the art of storytelling. Based on recent comments we have received when writing about AI, you could say Mascha is not your typical filmmaker. She's someone who has chosen to face AI head-on rather than shy away from it. While many in the industry are concerned about the potential threats AI poses (like the loss of creative jobs or the homogenization of content), Mascha sees things a bit differently. She believes that understanding AI is key to harnessing its potential and ensuring it becomes a tool that enhances, rather than diminishes, creative expression. Big studios vs. independent filmmakers Johnnie and Mascha delve into the various aspects of AI in filmmaking. They discuss the potential threats, but they also explore the benefits. Mascha's approach is clear: rather than fearing AI, she advocates for learning about it and finding ways to integrate it into the creative process. But what about Johnnie? Well, he seems quite relaxed since it's important to differentiate between big studios and independent filmmakers. While he also enjoys using AI tools like audio enhancement, music libraries, and such, he's not quite convinced yet that he will be out of a job anytime soon. (00:35) - Intro (1:49) - Mascha and her interest in AI (find her articles here) (6:16) - Negative comments we get when we write about AI (7:26) - Why are so many working in the film industry afraid of AI? (8:40) - Will AI replace us? (12:10) - Some artists' reactions to Midjourney & co (15:43) - Big studios vs. independent filmmakers (21:09) - Does Mascha have a plan if AI takes over? (22:33) - What does Johnnie think of AI? (29:52) - Sora & other video generators (33:44) - Conclusions

Lafayette native Brennan Robideaux. recently made big news with the release of his film, Born to Fly, a feature documentary about another Lafayette native, pole vaulter Armand “Mondo” Duplantis. Born to Fly is a coming-of-age tale about one of the greatest athletes of our generation. Mondo Duplantis is the best pole vaulter in history; he currently holds the world record indoor and outdoor pole vault titles, and won a Gold Medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics. This story is about love of craft and the determination of Brennan Robideaux, a young filmmaker who risked everything to capture an evolving story. He travled on his own dime for much of the filming of Born to Fly, was taken under the wing of the Duplantis family as they allowed him to travel with them to Europe to capture their son's pole vaulting competitions, and only came to acquire financial assistance after several years of filming and editing the footage that would become an historical documentary, Born to Fly. Brennan Robideaux says, "I'm very passionate about telling Louisiana stories. My main one I'm working on now is the 1991 gubernatorial election with Edwin Edwards and David Duke. That historical story hasn't been delved into and my generation, frankly, was born after it. We have no idea about this election. I want to make a film that tells how we got to that point. Louisiana loves emperesque dictators. We love eccentricities in Louisiana." Brennan started getting jobs while in high school at STM by filming local athletics. He realized he could make a living in film, and enjoyed taping live events for television. He moved up, becoming a camera operator, filming football games from a perch 40 feet high in the end zone for hours at a time. Brennan loved working with adults while still a youngster and joked that he earned the nickname "Two Cents," probably due to sharing his opinion on how things should be done a few too many times! He counts his blessings that by the time he became serious about cinematography, the quality of digital cameras mimicked what you would expect to see from a true film camera. The cost barriers were lower. Traditional film such as used by director Quentin Tarantino are cost-prohibitive for emerging filmakers operating on a budget. A short film, "A Riehl Blacksmith," featuring Sam Riehl, another STM student who was the youngest professional operating as a blacksmith in Louisiana and America, was a breakthrough accomplishment for Brennan. He says, "This short film really taught me how to tell a story in a short period of time." The short won a few awards: Filmconvert (a New Zealand filmmaker software company) awarded Brennan a cinematography honor, and Soul Pancake, a company founded by Rainn Wilson (of "The Office" fame) licensed the short and put it on its YouTube channel. It was enough to excite Brennan to look at this avocation as a career. And, he was only a Senior in high school. Brennan was invited to attend NFFTY (National Film Festival for Talented Youth) in Seattle due to the success of A Riehl Blacksmith. While he wasn't able to attend, it was the only film festival he made it into until Born To Fly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNzKXBiYcV8 Brennan attended UNO for a short time but dropped out to pursue his passion of filmmaking. By the time he was 21, he was back in Lafayette living with his parents and looking for a project to energize him once more. That motivational project came to life in 2017 after Brennan read a story in the Daily Advertiser about a Lafayette High student named Mondo Duplantis, the world junior record holder in pole vaulting. Brennan was familiar with the Duplantis family as the parents were both incredible athletes (Greg Duplantis was one of the best pole vaulters of his time and Helena represented Sweden in the heptathlon at international championships), and both participated at LSU in track and field events at the same time as Brennan's own parents,

FilmConvert has been creating software for film grain and color grading for about ten years. They’ve been keeping an eye on the mobile filmmaking community’s growth and have partnered with the app used by Hollywood filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh to shoot their films with iPhones. Episode 98 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking is a discussion with FilmConvert’s John Parker and Filmic Pro’s Eliot Fitzroy explaining this partnership and how it benefits iPhone filmmakers. FilmConvert has been working with Filmic Pro since 2017 to create supportive profiles with its software. They have brought compatibility between FilmConvert’s software and Filmic Pro’s App. Filmic Pro is available for both IOS and Android. Most recently they have worked together to create a tool, Cinematch, that brings the look and feel of professional Hollywood cameras to the iPhone 12. John explains how it handles footage shot with the iPhone and it produces the color and tone of the Hollywood high end cameras when coupled with the FilmicPro app. According to the Cinematch website, “Using dedicated camera packs, CineMatch converts your footage from one Log picture style to another. Mix and match between SLog2/3, CLog, BRaw, V-Log/L, RED IPP2 and more, and apply the correct REC.709 transform with a single click.” One of the drawbacks to mobile filmmaking, according to some filmmakers, has been the dynamic range limitations of smartphone cameras. However, the process of using FilmicPro with the iPhone 12 and Cinematch’s Nitrate is an exciting game-changer for filmmakers. According to FilmConvert’s John Parker, it will “…Give your films higher production quality. It’ll look like a million dollars.” Cinematch can also do something powerful for documentary producers. A producer can send a camera person to capture footage with an iPhone, bring it into the production timeline, and it will create a seamless process that will match the look and feel of the other camera. Essentially, you won’t notice it was shot with a smartphone. Using Filmic Pro Log V2 and V3 features can help match the quality of your film using the iPhone 6s through the iPhone 12. “Shooting log is one way to do that because you have a much more neutral starting point to build your finished look,” says Eliot Fitzroy. John Parker shares the work and details involved in creating different color profiles at the FilmConvert Lab. It’s a process which involves gathering data using different cameras as they record test footage under different conditions. I asked Eliot and John a bit about their experience in filmmaking and what brought them to where they are today. Eliot mentioned his love for narrative films and the horror film genre, which he eventually would like to find time to make new films. John shared his past within a local TV station in New Zealand putting together some local news stories and also lived in New York for some time, where he worked on some documentaries which ended up at the Tribeca Festival. Though his experience has been mostly in editing and post production, he’s also done some screenwriting. We get to discuss our thoughts on the current state of mobile filmmaking and how Apple has helped realize creativity opportunities for content creators from writers and musicians to filmmakers. This episodes includes a mention of the winners of the 2021 International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego and Best Feature Film Awardee Jennifer Zhang who shot and fully edited her feature length film using only her iPhone. Today our guest is Sam Wiles, a Color Engineer at FilmConvert. Since the very beginning of digital cinema, people have been trying to get video to look like film, and that’s a very difficult thing to get right, at least at a professional level. It’s not a matter of applying a color filter, response curve, dynamic range, highlight roll-off, grain, and so many other traits of a film image have to be taken into consideration too. FilmConvert is trying to simplify this process by designing film looks tailored to specific digital sensors and log profiles, which entails a ton of testing on various cameras and film stocks. Sam and Ryan talk about how this testing contributes to a more accurate film image and how CineMatch, FilmConvert’s new project that more easily matches color between pieces of footage shot on different cameras. Episode 14 Claudinho Andres in Santiago, ChilePublished 1/22/18Music In Films Shot With SmartphonesSBP Podcast: The Voice Of Mobile FilmShooting music videos with a smartphone is tricky but also quite an advantage over full sized cameras and crew. If you are considering getting creative with your film with regards to mixing footage and music, especially if your music is rhythmic, then take notes while our guest shares his experience and insights. Claudinho Andres Gomez attended the International Mobile Film Festival in April 2017 as a participant with a short music video. His film, Beat the city, was shot with a smartphone and no audio capturing gear while he was studying in New York. He broke the rules set by his instructor and bypassed the norms in his filmmaking studies in order to make his film. The outcome of his experiment is part of the podcast. Claudinho has made films and participated in many film festivals but he surprised us with his candid observations and what he experienced in our film festival in San Diego. Beat The City is currently available at Amazon so, while we cannot share the entire video, we share a link for the trailer with you. As you listen to the podcast, you will find Claudinho is a serious artist. The details and backstory to the making of his film provides a great resource to everyone who is looking to make a music video guided by a story with a message. We also asked him to share The Science Of Music In Films Shot With Smartphones which is available exclusively to our patron subscribers as a bonus episode to this podcast on Patreon.com. Unfortunately Rich and I were not able to make it to NAB 2017 in Las Vegas this year, so instead we had a roving reporter interview vendors for us. Adam Periso is a frequent listener to the podcast and offered his services to head over there and record some interviews for us. We jumped at the chance.
