Holiday promotions begin this Thursday, November 16th. Visit explore.omsystem.com/petapixel for the complete list of savings! It's been a busy week in the photography world, highlighted by the launch of the Sony a9 III. As the first full-frame CMOS sensor camera with a global shutter made for photography, we had to ask: is this the start of widespread adoption of the tech? Beyond the wider implications of global shutters, Chris Niccolls, Jordan Drake, and Jaron Schneider answer some of your biggest questions about Sony's new sensor technology including how it performs at high ISOs (and low ISOs), what problems beyond rolling shutter are actually solved by a global shutter sensor, who the camera will be best for, what some of the downsides of the camera are, and more. It's also been a very eventful week outside of Sony, including an update from the CEWE Photo Awards, another dramatic turn in the SanDisk Portable SSD saga, and the classic episodes of DigitalRev featuring Kai Wong have been taken offline. All this and more in this very packed episode of The PetaPixel Podcast! And this is a photograph from the winter storms that we had back at the end of December, the beginning of January, I think this is after the big ice storm that we had. But after, after, I think one day of a winter storm where we had a lot of snowfall, the weather cleared, and we went out on a walk. And we took a bunch of photographs, probably a number of the pictures that had been that have been put up in the last few weeks here. But this photograph was from a section near the cemetery, I think close to the university of Oregon campus. I like this image, it's really simple, and it's pretty easygoing. It's just a panel of trees that are maybe 100 feet away or so that stretch up and kind of reach up into the top of the frame. I like the composition a little bit. And I also liked the backlight that was

I had the opportunity to photograph the Blue Angels at the Miramar air show this weekend when Sony flew me and several journalists to San Diego to work with the Sony A9 and the 400mm f/2.8 lens. I also had the privilege of learning from 2 of the finest aviation photographers working today - Frank Crebas and Larry Grace. They gave me some wonderful tips on how to shoot aviation in broad sunlight. The Sony A9 is simply outstanding. With its stacked CMOS sensor it is capable of shooting raw files at 20 frames a second with no blackout in the viewfinder. More importantly it can adjust the autofocus up to 60 times a second. It is one of the fastest and most powerful mirrorless cameras I have used to date. Music is from Epidemic Sound. If you need music for your videos, Epidemic is simply the best in the business. The Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 G Master is the 30th lens in the Sony native E-mount lineup designed for full frame alpha cameras. Following the 400mm f/2.8, it uniquely designed both optically and mechanically. The optic design delivers both an extremely high resolution and a smooth and gorgeous depth of field. Its a compact and lightweight addition to the G-Master line and features a Direct Drive SSM focusing system for greater thrust, accuracy and high speed compatibility for video and continuous shooting on cameras such as the Sony A9. • 13 elements in 10 groups • 11 blade circular diaphragm • 2 XA elements • 3 ED elements • 9.4 inch minimum focusing distance • light weight and compact Music is from Epidemic Sound. Nikon has finally entered the serious mirrorless camera market with two new full frame cameras - the Nikon Z6 and Z7. This is actually pretty exciting news for the world of mirrorless photography and Sony now has a serious competitor in this segment. But will the new Nikon cameras stop current FF DSLR shooters from flocking over into the Sony a7 and a9 camp? For an in-depth discussion about the new Nikon Z6 and Z7 and their advantages and disadvantages in comparison to the respective Sony cameras, Marco has invited back mirrorless camera expert Mathieu Gasquet (Mat) co-founder of Mirrorlessons.com. Mat was at the Nikon Z press event in London and shares his hands-on experience with the new cameras. Marco announced that the collaborative street photography book: “Streetfotografie made in Germany” is now shipping. Marco is one of the authors and has written the introduction to this book. Episode 106 - Sony A9 Testdrive auf Amrum
Since we can't support the USA in the World Cup, the next best thing is clearly the brand new Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 G Master telephoto lens! Sony has officially stepped into the professional sports photography arena with its new zoom lens. Weighing over 2 lbs lighter than the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 E FL ED VR is 11.47 and the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L USM, the Sony 400mm GM also features a more balanced design, sharper image rendition and faster autofocus supporting the Sony A9's 20 frames per second shooting speed. This lens is extremely significant, not only being better than the competition optically and mechanically, but it also represents what Sony has been striving for with mirrorless cameras providing the best in class system for sports and wildlife photography. Sony contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if I'd like to come to New Jersey to photograph soccer. I jumped at the opportunity to photograph the New York Red Bulls play FC Dallas. So the USA did not make it far in the World Cup, but this shows us what the possibilities that the future holds - not only for the World Cup but also for photography. While Sony did bring me to New Jersey to test this lens, this video is not sponsored and the opinions here are my own. This is the Daily FRO for April 22nd 2018 (second for the day) I spoke with Rishi at DPreview who knows everything about sony cameras and every camera for that matter. I wanted to get his take on the images before I made a video and rushed to judgement.
In this episode, we're doing a quick test of the Sony a9 full-frame camera with our video switching software, vMix. We are capturing the video using our Blackmagic Intensity Pro card. The Sony a9 is pretty sharp and responds well to either low or high light conditions. We are using face tracking, as you will see about halfway through the video.
Today on Tech Down Over, we bring you a demonstration of the Sony a9's stellar AF-C Face Tracking!
Today on Tech Down Over, Geoff is back and we talk about the Sony a9, OLED TVs, Apple TV, and more.
Booray and Gary discuss the Holidays, family, and machines taking all of our jobs away. Also, is mirrorless a fad? Is video the new photo?
John Ricard gives thoughts on the Sony A9.
Last show when we discussed not doing video a ton of you guys wrote in and said don’t get rid of video. To clear that discussion up, I was never planning on doing away with the video, just cutting down on how many angles. The goal is to be able to live edit the show so pretty much right after we finish recording it could be good to go out into the world. We are testing a bunch of different solutions and we will see what we end up with soon. Thank you guys for your continued support as the show evolves and takes on a new life. In this episode we discuss all the Real World Reviews we were able to film, LEXAR being shut down, the Sony a9 and much more. 00:16 Audio Only 02:08 New Wheel of Fro Rules 03:31 I Like Podcasts 06:28 What's On the Android? 10:55 Coming Up Next... 11:21 RWR Sigma 135mm 12:33 RWR Nikon 8-15 FishEye 13:25 RWR Sigma 100-400mm 15:55 RWR Sony A9 and Gear of the Week 22:23 Photo News Begins With the 6D Mark 2 31:42 Lexar!!!!!! Can there be a better guide than Apple’s own manuals for FCP, Motion, and Logic? Yes indeed! I’m going to tell you about an incredible set of “graphically enhanced manuals" from musician, composer, author, and CEO of DingDing Music, Inc. - Edgar Rothermich. Apple made a huge splash earlier this week at WWDC 2017. Not only did Apple demonstrate solid software updates to iOS and macOS, they announced a huge round of hardware updates including the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, iMacs, and now the iMac Pro, along with hints of a modular Mac Pro. That should make a bunch of creative pros happy! Or, you would think! Cinematographer and photographer Rick Delgado checks in with me after just returning from Cancun where he worked on a commercial shoot for Nickelodeon. He also tells me about his impressions and thoughts about NAB 2017, and he answers the question “do real pros use autofocus.” His answer may surprise you! While we don't have any additional information on the likelihood that the ban will be expanded to include all of Europe, we do have some suggestions and recommendations on what you can do to prepare in case the ban does come into place. In addition, Juan has a report on the newly released Sony a9 Camera. Juan has had the camera in hand for a few days and has some good and some not so good news to share. Today, Paul and Michael discuss the idea that notorious photographers are starting groups, using their names to attract photographers into those groups and then doing not participating in the discussions, providing topics or even contributing value. All these guys are doing are gathering photographers into groups in order to market to them! Want to know what we think? Take a listen. We also touch on the new and pretty spec-alicous Sony A9 Mirrorless Camera. Can it cement a place pitch-side in the hands of sports photographers? Tune in now to hear what we think.
With the announcement of the new Sony A9 comes a serious camera but with a very high price tag. Will I be getting a Sony Alpha 9? Well, its complicated. I’ve had a LOT of Sony cameras over the years. Bought every one of them with my own, hard earned money.
