Our latest Researcher of the Month, Professor Cara Swit, is a leading expert in early childhood social development, who has been exploring a question that often goes overlooked: what do children think about their parents' device use? Her latest study gives six to nine-year-olds the chance to share their perspectives through drawings, role play and child-centred workshops. This interview delves into her findings, which reveal that even young children notice patterns in parental device use, form judgements about “too much” screen time, and express strong feelings about how it affects their relationships and play. While children value shared digital experiences, many also report frustration, sadness, or neglect when devices become a barrier to connection. Tune in for some practical strategies for managing device use without guilt. It's a great reminder that listening to children's voices can reshape how we think about technology, relationships and wellbeing in the digital age.
Let's be real—every shop says they make quality parts. But doing it consistently? That's a whole different game. In this episode of the MakingChips Machine Shop MBA series, we break down what it actually takes to build—and sustain—excellence in quality control. From quoting parts you can actually make, to in-process inspections, to how your shipping paperwork could delay your cash flow, this episode covers the full spectrum. We dive into real-world strategies for building quality into every step of the process—from the first RFQ to the final shipment. We talk about ownership, team structure, risk-based IPC strategies, final inspections, and how a simple $100 reward created a culture of accountability on the shop floor. Whether you're building your first quality system or tightening up an already dialed-in process, this conversation will challenge you to think beyond just tolerances and calipers. You'll hear how quality isn't just about measuring—it's about quoting smarter, communicating across departments, and building a shop culture where excellence is everyone's job. This episode is packed with sharp insights and real-world stories from three shop leaders who know what it takes to deliver consistent, swit-level quality. This is BONUS audio from August 16th 2021I had the pleasure of speaking with the wonderful Loretta Swit, Emmy-Winning M*A*S*H Actress Known for Playing Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan. I asked if she remembered that I was limo driver years ago? AND, I "accidently" left Loretta Swit at the Hollywood Bowl. After she paid me an extra $50 to stay put...I left.Outside of acting, Swit was a painter and a vocal animal rights activist. In 2017, she released a book, Switheart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit, proceeds of which are donated to charities and organizations against animal cruelty. Swit passed away today at her home in NY of natural causes. She was 87. We lost a wonderful actress, but an even better person. RIPWe couldn't play this audio on-air cause its encoded or something and would make alrams go off. So here you go! #LorettaSwit #Aninalactivist #MASH #HollywoodBowl

Loretta Swit, a.k.a. Hot Lips Houlihan, is celebrating 50 years of M*A*S*H and the second printing of her book Switheart. And you can’t legally talk with Ms. Swit without discussing her passion, animal welfare.
In this episode, we welcome back Clare O'Dea, who spoke with us once before about Swiss neutrality. Clare is an Irish author and journalist living in Fribourg, here in Switzerland. She worked for the international service of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation for 10 years, and she's written three books, 'The Naked Swiss: The Nation Behind 10 Myths', which examines the main stereotypes about the Swiss, 'The Naked Irish', which does the same thing for Ireland, and Voting Day, her first novel, which is set in 1959, on the day that Swiss men voted 'no' to granting women the vote. It will be Voting Day that we'll be looking at a little more closely in today's episode.

In this episode of DarshanTalks Podcast where host Darshan Kulkarni Pharm.D, MS, Esq. welcomes guest Michael A. Swit, Esq. to discuss Medical Affairs Compliance. Michael A. Swit is a long-time FDA regulatory Attorney and Chief Regulatory Counsel at Varian Medical Systems. He has taught and written on an array of subjects relating to FDA regulation and related commercial activities, including directing courses on FDA regulation of drug/device advertising and on generic drug approvals. A former member of the Food & Drug Law Journal Editorial Board, Mr. Swit has spoken frequently at conferences sponsored by such organizations as RAPS, FDLI, and DIA. Swit is a highly experienced food & drug law attorney who has addressed critical FDA legal issues since 1984. His vast experience includes serving as general counsel and secretary of Par Pharmaceutical, a prominent generic drug company, and, thus, he brings a commercial perspective to his work. His private practice has included stints in the FDA Law Practice Groups in the San Diego offices of both Duane Morris and Heller Ehrman, and at McKenna & Cuneo (now Dentons), in the firm's D.C. and San Diego offices. He also served for seven years as Vice President at The Weinberg Group, a premier FDA regulatory consulting firm, and as the CEO of FDAnews.com, a premier publisher of FDA newsletters and other information products. In the initial part of the podcast, he described how to do the Varian Company functions and its role in medical affairs. At Varian, he spearheads the resolution of all legal issues impacting the regulatory, quality, and clinical challenges of the world's leading developer of radiation treatment technologies used to treat cancer and other conditions, including overseeing the firm's promotional review process. The company's aim is 'creating a world without the fear of cancer'. He mentioned every company makes mistakes or sometimes customers think that the company has done something wrong and every sphere will have a problem that is unavoidable but how to respond and the key element to tackle those circumstances that determines everything. He works in the compliance department resolving disputes and problems. The mid-segment was about the work processes and balance, then he was asked about the SOPs in medical affairs i.e. standard operating procedures for clinical practice, he had prime approaches for the same - policies, SOPs, granular work construction, and it ought to be automation. He also mentioned mnemonic words that are important in this sphere. The conversation also included The Chicago Tylenol scandal ( these were a series of poisoning deaths resulting from drug tampering in the Chicago metropolitan area in 1982) concerning crisis management and how one can do a right recall. Lastly, they touched upon the influencer marketing aspect. Connect with Michael A. Celebrities rule, sometimes quite literally, in our society and for those of us who are not famous, an encounter with a celebrity can be a memorable experience. It can be a fun story to tell, a meh moment or a less than pleasant experience one hopes to forget. In some rare instances, an encounter with a celebrity can be a life-changing event. In this episode, Dr. McCoy discusses the lessons she has learned through celebrity encounters over the years. These lessons include: the importance of not make assumptions about another's life, not rushing to judgment about another's character, learning to make up one's own mind about an issue instead of taking a celebrity's word for it, realizing that celebrities, like the rest of us, aren't always what they seem but are much more fascinating and complex than any label -- just like us, that for some celebrities, an ordinary moment is a luxury and that kindness and compassion can make a crucial difference in another's life, whether or not celebrity is ever part of the equation.
Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H) joins the show for a bit to chat about her new book Swithart, a collection of 65 full-color paintings & drawings (and 22 photographs) she has put together to help raise awareness/education in combating animal suffering & cruelty. The book combines Swit’s lifelong love of art and animals primarily with the use of the watercolor medium. (On a side note, Swit will be at the Hunt & Fish Club in Manhattan on Valentine’s Day & will sign a copy of her book for any listener in attendance). Also checking in, Darryl Dash, author of How To Grow: Applying the Gospel to All of Your Life. Dash is a pastor in Toronto who helps readers learn why habits are important, how to build them, and which ones to focus on first. He covers a variety of areas (including health) but also is sure to focus on building three basic gospel habits: reading (or listening to) the Bible, praying, and pursuing worship & fellowship within a church community.
