Originally constructed by Captain Powell, a wartime surgeon, the home was believed to carry a curse from its inception. Shortly after its completion, misfortune plagued the captain: bankruptcy, the loss of children to disease, and eventually, his own descent into madness. Passing through various owners, the mansion eventually came into the possession of its most illustrious inhabitant, Adelina Patti, the renowned opera singer from Madrid. After Adelina's demise within its walls, the once grand residence was repurposed as a tuberculosis hospital from the 1920s to the 1950s, witnessing further tragedies and the emergence of numerous resident spirits. Throughout its existence, Craig Y Nos Castle has amassed a collection of ghostly tales and haunted legends. My Special Guests Are: Jeremy Marsh the castle historian and tour guide. Lazarus Carpenter an author, researcher, psychic channel, radio broadcaster (Book at Bedtime – Tales from Wales – Oystermouth Radio), and facilitator/tutor for Ystradgynlais Creative Writing Group. Adelina Patti Adelina Patti (19 February 1843 – 27 September 1919) soared as an Italian opera luminary. Amidst her prime, she commanded monumental fees gracing stages across Europe and America. Her vocal journey commenced in 1851 as a child prodigy, culminating in her final performance for audiences in 1914. Alongside luminaries Jenny Lind and Thérèse Tietjens, Patti endures as one of opera's most revered sopranos, celebrated for the crystalline purity of her voice and the mastery of her bel canto technique. Renowned composer Giuseppe Verdi hailed her as perhaps the greatest singer to grace the earth, a sentiment echoed by critics and society alike. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Explore the history, beauty, ghost lore and mysteries of the castle. 2. Discover the impact Adelina Patti had on the local community.

She could absolutely be a megastar because we have historical precedent for it. In this episode, I ask my guests, Drs. James Davis & Steven Waksman, the following questions: What were music concerts like in the 19th century? Were concerts limited in size, since there was no amplification? Was music as loud as it is now? Was Jenny Lind in the 19th century a bigger star than Taylor Swift now? How was it that young people readily listened to classical music - as if it was the hottest and most popular music? When did concerts begin resembling modern concerts? What is considered popular music? Has this definition changed over time? How do we compare Taylor Swift's concert to our history of concerts? Dr. Davis is a professor of Musicology and Chair of the Music History Area at the School of Music at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Among his many books, he is the author of Maryland, My Maryland: Music and Patriotism during the American Civil War. Dr. Waksman is the Elsie Irwin Sweeney Professor of Music and Professor of American Studies; and Chair in American Studies at Smith College. Among his many books, he is the author of Live Music in America: A History from Jenny Lind to Beyoncé. Hollywood: Just as America's music culture has changed over the centuries, so has America's movie culture. In S3E29, Professor Thomas Doherty of Brandeis University talked about the magic of the movies in the early 20th century, how all of that changed with the advent of television, and how it's changing now with the disruption of artificial intelligence. SynopsisOn today's date in 1847, Giuseppe Verdi conducted the premiere performance of his newest opera, I Masnadieri or The Robbers, at Her Majesty's Theater in London. And speaking of her Majesty, Queen Victoria was in the audience, as were other state dignitaries, including the Duke of Wellington and Louis Napoleon of France. It was the first time in over twenty years that a world-famous composer had composed an opera specifically for London. As one of Verdi's young assistants put it, "Neither Rossini, Bellini, or Donizetti had ever pitched their tents on the banks of the Thames."As an added attraction, the 27-year old Swedish nightingale, soprano Jenny Lind, topped an all-star line-up of singers. It was Jenny Lind's London debut and the first time ever that an operatic role had been specially-written for herThe premiere was a great success for all concerned, with Verdi and the singers called to the stage again and again to cheers from the audience. The critics, for their part, were less than kind."We take this to be the worst opera that has been given in your time at Her Majesty's Theater," wrote one. "There does not exist an Italian composer more incapable of producing what is commonly called melody." I Masnadieri fared a little better back in Italy, but gradually faded from the active repertory until the revival of interest in all of Verdi's opera in the 20th century.Music Played in Today's ProgramGiuseppe Verdi (1813 - 1901) I masnadieri Overture Hungarian State Opera Orchestra; Iper Giorgio Morandi, conductor. Cape Cod has a rich tradition of local lore, stretching back to a time before the Pilgrims arrived. Ancient Wampanoag legends like Granny Squannit and Princess Scargo are as familiar as tales of pirates and explorers, including "Black Sam" Bellamy and Donald Baxter Macmillan. Felines often blocked "Cat's Alley" in pursuit of food from fishermen's boats. The remnants of Billingsgate Island can be seen at low tide, and visits from Jenny Lind and Helen Keller contrast with the mysterious stories of the "Lady of the Dunes" and New England's Dark Day. Author Robin Smith-Johnson shares historic tales of shipwrecks, murders, hauntings and more from the Cape. Robin Smith-Johnson works as the newsroom librarian at the Cape Cod Times and teaches in the English department at Cape Cod Community College. She holds English degrees from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, and Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and she is the author of a book of poetry titled Dream of the Antique Dealer's Daughter (Word Poetry, 2013). The Last Best Hope?: Understanding America from the Outside In

Jenny Lind, the "Swedish Nightingale": a soprano who made strong men weep with the beauty of her voice. In this episode, Adam explores the Nightingale's sensational tour of the US in 1850-52. She was described as the "most famous woman in the world" by her promoter, the never-knowingly-unselling impresario P T Barnum. Her reputation for virtue did much to make theatre and performance respectable, but as Lind travelled across America, the country was riven by slavery. How would she navigate those divisions while retaining her reputation, and making money? The guests are Robert Wilson, author of Barnum: An American Life, and the music historian Katherine Preston. Reader: Dane Udenberg. Producer: Emily Williams. Presenter: Adam Smith.
