GUEST: Tom Buck, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church (Lindale, TX)Back in 2022, we were interested to learn that a non-profit foundation, funded to the tune of $100M by mostly anonymous donors, had put together a marketing campaign called “He Gets Us” to, in their own words, “rediscover the life and teachings of Jesus, the world's most radical love activist?”Hmm, the life and teaching of Jesus has never needed to be rediscovered, as it's right there in the Bible for all to read. And Jesus as the “world's most radical love activist” is not how Jesus described Himself. He called Himself the “Son of God” and the giver of eternal life.With these hints of the campaign's view of Jesus, it wasn't surprising that their “Brand Jesus” marketing ads appearing on television (including the Super Bowl), social media, Times Square billboards, and well, almost everywhere, portrayed Jesus as a social justice hero who gets us because He had a “teen mother” and was a “refugee” and was “cancelled” as three of the ads portray.But hey, “An ad for Jesus is being viewed by millions during the Super Bowl and how could that be anything but good? God can use anything!” so the refrain goes.The problem is, and it's a problem of the greatest significance, that the real Jesus Christ of Scripture is being misrepresented in the He Gets Us campaign, along with His main message: “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).The Biblical gospel of God's holiness, man's sinfulness, Jesus' substitution and resurrection, and Christ's command to “repent and believe the gospel” is either not clearly presented or is obfuscated by the heavy emphasis on Jesus as a role model who gets our problems and predicaments.The false Christ and gospel being presented by He Gets Us is all the more pernicious now that the organization is funded to the tune of $1B. Tom is a personal favorite of mine as far as YouTube goes, as he creates fantastic looking content with a fantastic personality. The great thing about having Tom on the show, is not only is he a great content creator, but he's an even better person, and has also in turn helped my growth as a person and creator.

As normal, it is Tom Buck's fault. Everything is Tom's fault these days, so, we might as well join in the fun. Seriously, I mentioned him retweeting the video of Riley Gaines being attacked by trans-madness thugs and that was just part of a half hour monologue on creation norms, the culture of death, and the madness of a society making its lasts gasps as it dies a self-inflicted death. And right in the middle of talking about censorship and the fact that only children require that everyone else be told to shut up, Twitch pulled the plug and cancelled us. Suspended our account and shut down the live stream. Talk about self-fulfilling prophecy- We really didn't need further evidence of the utter degradation of social media platforms and the media, but thanks for the really personal example- So, we will have to live stream from Odysee next week, as it is our only option right now. GUEST: TOM BUCK, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church (Lindale, TX)In late May, pastor Tom Ascol, who was then a candidate for president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), joined us to discuss some of the pivotal issues facing the largest Protestant denomination in America. Their annual convention came and went in mid-June in Anaheim, CA, with Ascol finishing second in the voting for president behind a less biblically-conservative candidate named Bart Barber.There is a major debate taking place within the SBC that is representative of the larger debate within the Evangelical church on issues related to gender, race, and sexuality.Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Southern California, is the most well-known pastor within the denomination. His church and best-selling books, The Purpose Driven Life and The Purpose Driven Church, have impacted the evangelical church's ecclesiology (i.e. the doctrine of the church, including methodology) more in the last 25 years than anyone or anything else.Last year, in clear violation of Scripture (e.g. 1 Tim. 2:11-14; Titus 1:5-9) Warren led the way in appointing three women to pastoral roles at Saddleback and just recently announced a husband and wife will be replacing him in a kind of dual pastoring role when he retires this year.Despite Warren's actions being in violation of biblical and denominational beliefs, the SBC chose not to disassociate from Saddleback and gave Warren six minutes to speak at their annual meeting. Our guest is Tom Buck, pastor of First Baptist Church in Lindale, TX and a noted theological conservative within the SBC.“This is 2022…get over it” is not the right response to the issue of appointing female pastors.
