On this week's episode of Curious Women, Meg & Kylie chat it up with Cancer Nutrition Expert & Integrate and Functional Dietitian, Dionne Detraz. Dionne specializes in helping survivors build cancer recovery plans that support healing, optimize treatment, and reduce recurrence by using holistic anticancer nutrition in combination with integrative and functional medicine tools. Dionne's experience includes over 20 years working in health education, wellness, and nutrition. She's worked in conventional medical settings, infusions clinics, an integrative medicine clinic, and for the last 6 years in private practice. Before starting her online business "The Rustic Dietitian" in 2016, she worked for several years at the University of California San Francisco Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, and she spent more than 10 years as an outpatient dietitian and health educator at Kaiser Permanente. Her education and experience includes a unique blend of western medical nutrition therapy with integrative and functional medicine. You can connect with Dionne on her new website at www.groundandroot.com or on social at @groundandroot.nutrition ! TLDL takeaways from today's episode: 1. The majority of hormone-sensitive cancers are mostly influenced by the sex hormones: estrogen, progesterone & testosterone (uterine, ovarian, prostate, breast cancers, etc) 2. The connection between hormones & hormone-sensitive cancers is this: cells in these glands have a place for hormones to "land" (i.e. receptors), which means when hormones bind to that cell, the hormone tells the cell to grow (and therefore it can multiply into cancer). Cells in other parts of the body can also have "landing pads" for other hormones and substances (like Insulin and glucose). 3. Pillar I to managing/preventing hormone-sensitive cancers: Avoiding or reducing exposure to xenobiotics/endocrine disrupting chemicals (aka EDCs). You can do this by: (1) trading out plastic tupperware for glass; (2) trading out bleached products (toilet paper, menstrual pads and tampons, etc) for non-bleached products as much as possible and (3) choose less toxic personal care products (shampoos, deoderants, etc- check out Dionne's website for more posts on these!) 4. Pillar II: Improve the liver's ability to detox. You can do this by: (1) Reduce/limit alcohol consumption; (2) Eat cruciferous veggies, dark leafy greens, allium foods, citrus fruits & berries, walnuts, apples to help nourish the liver (3) Some herbal teas like milk thistle can help detox processes and (4) Good hydration! Adjusting meal times, adequate sleep & getting your sweat on are also great! (Check out the "organ clock" Dionne was referring to here!) 5. Pillar III: Support your gut's estrobolome. You can do this by eating a ton of fiber, probiotic-rich foods, mushrooms and polyphenols 6. Pillar IV: Include hormone-balancing foods like healthy fats, cruciferous veggies & phytoestrogens (organic, whole food-form). 7.vThere are alternative testing methods to see how your body is actually processing your hormones. One test that can do this is called the DUTCH test. You can do this test with a Naturopath or Functional MD or Dietitian (like Dionne!). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/curious-women/support

My top 10 lessons learned in 2020 Lesson 9 Night sweats. Mood swings. Insomnia. Hot flushes. Weight gain. Headaches. Depression. Anxiety. Dry Skin. Vaginal Atrophy . . . I could go on. It’s a sad list, isn’t it? Yet these are just a few of the often times debilitating side-effects of peri-menopause and menopause. You would hope that a list of such symptoms in women in their 40s and 50s would be enough to at least pique a doctor’s interest and encourage them to find a solution. But unfortunately that is not the case. Instead women are being met with ignorance and even sexism by the people who they regard as medical professionals including Medical doctors, Functional MD's, Nutrition Coaches and even Hormone "experts"! The number of postmenopausal women has only risen over time. Statistics show that in the year 1998, only 477 million postmenopausal women were present in the world however, this number is expected to rise to around 1.1 billion by 2025.  Estrogen at one time was the #1 prescribed medicine in North America. Helping women all around the world sail through their menopausal years. Then something changed and the world became misinformed and unjustifiably scared of hormone replacement.  In this episode I carefully go over the study that ruined millions of women's lives. How we have been mislead into believing from our highly respected health practitioners that estrogen and hormone replacement therapy is bad. Why it is of the utmost importance that women educate themselves on this and help me to spread the word so women do not have to suffer needlessly.  Check out the Women's Wellness Shop your one stop shop for women's bioidentical hormones and supplements.

Few people know, I almost died (or at least felt like I was dying) from toxicity about 10 years ago. That's why this conversation is so important to me. And it should be for you. For the sake of your health as well as your family. Cheryl is speaking 100% from the heart and personal experience. Eliminating toxins was a big step in reducing Cheryl’s chronic pain. Eliminating toxins was a critical step in healing her leaky gut, which is the cause of inflammation. As she regained her health, she returned to school and became a health coach to share her new knowledge with others. Inflammation is a root cause of many of our illnesses and disease, cancer, heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, Type I and Type II diabetes, possibly even autism. Inflammation inhibits weight loss. I have given talks to people with autoimmune disease but also to people who are cancer survivors, people who are stroke survivors, moms with children with health issues, and millennials that don’t want to get sick like their parents. Cheryl Meyer My message is simple, “eliminate toxins, heal your chronic pain.  Own your own health. I got sick and didn't want a life of pain and pills. “ Thus began an odyssey that culminated in Meyer’s writing the manual she wishes she’d had when she got sick.  In her award-winning book It Feels Good to Feel Good: Learn to Eliminate Toxins, Reverse Inflammation and Feel Great Again. Meyer explains how she discovered she was suffering from inflammation and autoimmune disease, how she actively searched out, purged, and replaced toxins in her life, how she found the right doctor (a Functional MD), and how she finally returned to wellness. Eliminating toxins was a big step in reducing Cheryl’s chronic pain.  Eliminating toxins was a critical step in healing her leaky gut, which is the cause of inflammation.  As she regained her health, she returned to school and became a health coach to share her new knowledge with others.  She comments, “I wrote this book for people with autoimmune disease and inflammation, but really, it’s for everyone. Inflammation is a root cause of many of our illnesses and disease, cancer, heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, Type I and Type II diabetes, possibly even autism.  Inflammation inhibits weight loss.  I have given talks to people with an autoimmune disease but also to people who are cancer survivors, people who are stroke survivors, moms with children with health issues, and millennials that don’t want to get sick like their parents.  Toxins are everywhere and impacting our health, the health of our children, and the health of our earth.  I would like people to eliminate the toxins now and not wait until they get sick and tired of being sick and tired.”  She adds, “It’s all about toxic load.  Each toxin that is eliminated is one step closer to health.”  Cheryl is passionate about her message.  She has done 40 podcasts in the last year.  .  Cheryl has also participated in 7 summits: Fibromyalgia 12/17, Weight Loss 3/18, Thrive Onward and Upwards with Cancer 3/18, and The Healthy Gut Flow Summit 3/18, Living Your Intentions in Joy and Abundance 5/13/18 and The Gut Guide Summit 5/20/18.
