Better Today Than Yesterday (BTTY) Podcast

A dear friend recommended the book Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. It took me a year to read it, which was a waste of a year. This week I scrolled through my highlights and I feel compelled to share a few with you. You don't have to see where you're going, you don't have to see your destination or everything you will pass along the way. You just have to see two or three feet ahead of you. This is right up there with the best advice about writing, or life, I have ever heard. A sober friend once said to me, “When I was still drinking, I was a sedated monster. After I got sober, I was just a monster.” He told me about his monster. His sounded just like mine without quite so much mascara. When people shine a little light on their monster, we find out how similar most of our monsters are. The secrecy, the obfuscation, the fact that these monsters can only be hinted at, gives us the sense that they must be very bad indeed. But when people let their monsters out for a little onstage interview, it turns out that we've all done or thought the same things, that this is our lot, our condition. We don't end up with a brand on our forehead. Instead, we compare notes. On a bad day you also don't need a lot of advice. You just need a little empathy and affirmation. You need to feel once again that other people have confidence in you.We are given a shot at dancing with, or at least clapping along with, the absurdity of life, instead of being squashed by it over and over again. It's like singing on a boat during a terrible storm at sea. You can't stop the raging storm, but singing can change the hearts and spirits of the people who are together on that ship.As part of my job, I've had hundreds, if not thousands, of opportunities to hear people's stories. They have been generous in sharing. Here's what I've learned. The narratives vary, but the stories are strikingly similar when you peel away the layers and the armor. The parents who perceive themselves as not good enough, the young professionals who think they are behind in life, the mid-lifers that don't think they did enough, or the leaders who are about to cave under pressure. Or, the countless people I've met that have beaten all the odds—going from nothing to being everything despite their fears, handicaps, and struggles. While we are diverse, everyone is working through something—fear, loss, desire, love, failure, and even success. Someone you know is losing a loved one to illness, another is struggling with an addiction, someone else just lost their relationship, and another isn't sleeping because someone in their life is in pain. Others are waking up wondering how they got so lucky, with a slight tinge of, “I hope I don't screw it up.” Still others had the courage to pursue their path, not the one their parents or society wanted for them. They are still fighting a struggle. People have reasons for their actions—or inactions. Sometimes these reasons are rational, sometimes they aren't, but in the moment, they usually make sense. This week, I'm reminding myself that everyone has a story, and understanding those stories helps us understand each other. I'm thinking about how my relationships and friendships would change if I went even deeper. I know I still throw up walls and don't always listen. I can be better. We won't always fully understand everyone, and that's okay. What matters is that we keep trying and remember to be kind and empathetic. Everyone is worth getting to know. After all, we're all just stories—hoping someone will listen.I hope you're good. Take care, Kelly PS: Here are my highlights from Bird by Bird by Anne LamottPPS: Thanks again for the recommendation. Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #585 is an hour of visionary acoustic improvised music played by The Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, 12-string acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica, Celtic harp and ukulele, Bob Sherwood on piano and percussion, Craig Harris on Native drum and congas and special guest, prominent Turkish folk musician Ludimirra Ozdemir on vocals and oud.  Recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, in mid-August of 2024, today's show begins with the swirling, mystical “It's Just That Way”, an evocative ode to inevitability driven by Mariam's chiming mandolin and Bob's circular piano figures.  “Tell Me Your Story” is a beautiful minor key folk ballad featuring a fine vocal from Mariam and upbeat, driving congas from Craig and “Like The River” is a staid, open gospel ballad with a fine vocal from Mariam above Bob's reverent gospel piano.  Ludimirra joins us on his mournful, expressive oud for the droning, mystical “Nectar”, a beautiful nature prayer from Mariam underpinned by her alternate-tuned Martin 12-string guitar.  “Dum Gedje Se Irimde” introduces the gorgeous, otherworldly music of Ludimirra to today's show.  The piece is a beautifully overcast ballad placed in an Eastern drone with a fine, poetic vocal.  The ensemble again enriches one of Ludimirra's mystical original pieces, this one entitled “To Practam O Sirimush, Sirimush”.  This piece expands and intensifies immeasurably with powerful work from piano, harmonica, congas, 12-string and Native flute.  “Let's All Circle Around The World In Piece” stretches and draws the eastern D drone of the preceding extended modal workout with western harmonic touches and suggestions from Bob's piano supporting Mariam's reverent poetry.  The ensemble eases into Mariam's extended coda “To The Oak, Standing So Tall”, a lush, expressive poem carried on light, stretching touches of gossamer from the instrumentalists.  We conclude today's show with the powerful, affecting, piano-led “Yemanja”, a piece that sums up today's threads and directions using Mariam's evocative song from her “Gaea Star Goddesses” album. A Touch of Light Podcast

We recently did an interview with Richard Dugan for a program called Tell Me Your Story. At the end of his interviews, he asks his guests these three questions: Who are you? What gets you up in the morning? What was your best day? What interesting and deeply spiritual questions! Of course, everyone will answer in their own way, and we answered them spontaneously at the end of the program. But since then, I've thought about them more deeply. You, too, might benefit if you ponder them, and discover what emerges from your heart and soul.

https://drsaraswati.com/ an insightful and transformative work that is poised to make a significant impact on discussions surrounding feminism and the human experience of pain. Dr. L. Ayu Saraswati, an award-winning author and professor in women, gender, and sexuality studies at the University of Hawai`i, has recently released her latest book, "Scarred: A Feminist Journey Through Pain." [Published by NYU Press April 25, 2023, and available on eBook for $34.80, Paperback for $36.70, and a hardback for $152.00] Key Points of the Book: "Scarred" is a genre-bending exploration that seamlessly blends memoir and scholarly criticism, offering thought-provoking theories and life-transforming perspectives on pain, particularly in relation to feminism. Dr. Saraswati challenges conventional notions of pain by reframing it as a "transnational feminist object." Drawing from her personal experiences traveling across twenty countries in just over a year, the book invites readers to contemplate how they can live with pain differently. By using pain as a lens of feminist analysis, "Scarred" delves into how power manifests through pain and explores the embodiment and embedding of pain in relationships. This unique approach combines transnational feminist theory, travel studies, and pain studies, providing a fresh perspective on the intersections of these fields. Ultimately, the book invites us to reconsider how we carry pain in a more humane, life-sustaining, enchanting, and feminist way. In an interview with Tell Me Your Story, Dr. Saraswati will empathize with your audience by answering questions like: How did your personal journey and travels shape the concept of pain as a "transnational feminist object" in "Scarred"? Can you elaborate on the role of power and its manifestation through pain in your book? How do you envision readers incorporating the insights from "Scarred" into their own lives? In what ways does the book challenge and expand traditional academic and personal perspectives on pain? Could you share a specific experience from your travels that deeply influenced your understanding of pain within a feminist framework? What prompted you to combine transnational feminist theory, travel studies, and pain studies in this unique exploration? How might "Scarred" contribute to ongoing conversations about feminism, particularly in the context of pain studies? Can you discuss the importance of reframing pain and its implications for societal and individual well-being? What do you hope readers, especially those new to feminist discourse, take away from "Scarred"? How can individuals apply the principles outlined in your book to create a more empathetic and feminist approach to pain in their own lives?

This is officially the conclusion of Season #1 of the “Tell Me Your Story, Coach” Podcast. I appreciate everyone listening. Hopefully, we helped some young coaches learn and grow. In Episode #1, I said the goal was to talk to 100 Coaches. We accomplished this goal! My parents always told me to finish what I had started. And I thought it was imperative that my 7-year-old son, JJ, saw this example firsthand. I am unsure how and when and, honestly if ever, Season 2 will happen. The past 18 months have been super fun but also very challenging. Creating a weekly podcast takes hours upon hours of work. I can't thank my wife, Liz, for her support- Enough! This podcast has been, indeed, a labor of love. I was unsure, before this podcast, that I ever helped a coach grow. That is, if I ever gave back to the coaching industry. I am proud to say that I can now sleep at night, knowing that I gave back to the coaching industry. Finally, and most importantly, I want to thank all 100 coaches who took time out of their busy schedules and trusted me to tell their coaching stories. I will be eternally grateful.

Andrew Hauser: Athletic Trainer/Strength Coach to the MLB and NFL players I am so excited to share amazing stories all month, interviewing people from all over, who have gone through losing a limb or have limb difference, and letting them share their story and how they have risen from and conquered the challenges in their lives. This week's interview is with Andrew Hauser, athletic trainer/strength coach in the MLB and with NFL players, who lost his leg in a scary and tragic accident at 18 years old.  He was a baseball player and getting ready to head off to college to a whole new world when this took place. Can you even imagine being 18 years old with whole world in your reach, only to have your life turned upside down in a heartbeat?!?! Andrew's positive outlook, and his ability to be introspective and calm, was not only astonishing at such a young age, but it probably was the key to him bouncing back and living an amazing life, full of adventure and helping others strive to reach their highest potential in the field he works in. Listen in as you hear Andrew talk about his journey, the hurdles he had to jump through, finding a wife to love and be loved by, and embarking on a career that he hadn't dreamed of as an 18 year old.  Hear what took place, in his own words, and how he ended up reconnecting with his identity as an athlete and having an incredible job, doing what he loves. Thank you, Andrew, for sharing your story, your journey, and the struggles and triumphs you experienced along the way!   As always: Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be YOU!!!   Much Love, Angie

Coach Bill Sall, In this episode, you'll hear from Bill Sall. Coach Sall is the Head Coach at Calvin University. For those who don't know, Calvin is one of the best Division III basketball programs in the country. As a matter of fact, Coach Sall is an alum of Calvin. At Calvin, Bill scored over two thousand points, had seventy straight double-figure games, and was an All-American. This season Coach Sall and his Calvin Knights are in the midst of another terrific season. Coach Bill Sall is no stranger to running a successful basketball program. And, Coach Sall is closing in on over thirty years as a coach. Early in his career, Coach Sall was an assistant coach at Calvin, Ferris State, and Hillsdale. Coach Sall was the Head Coach for Ferris State for eleven seasons. At Ferris State, Coach Sall recorded over 170 wins, four division titles, and three trips to the DII NCAA Tournament. In addition, Coach Sall was the Head Coach at Northern Michigan for six seasons. At this Division II program in the upper peninsula of Michigan, Coach Sall rebuilt the Northern Michigan basketball program. As many know, Northern Michigan is where Hall of Fame Coach Tom Izzo played. In my conversation with Coach Sall, you are going to learn about a coach who is willing to share all of his secrets. Whether it is discussing how he gets his players to play so hard for him, how he tackles a time out, how he has learned to manage coaching a game, his thoughts on recruiting or his thoughts on raising four wonderful children in a time-consuming profession, Coach Sall directs all of his comments to young coaches. Finally, this is a podcast about change. A head coach who is honest about the changes he has made as coach. Quite simply, it is a tremendous honest introspective from Coach Sall that will have you looking at your own coaching philosophy. And, the final minutes of the podcast is a must listen. Coach Sall‘s thoughts on how he creates long-lasting real relationships with his former players is simply beautiful.
