As some of you may know, September is PCOS Awareness Month. So, before we move into October, I want to wrap this month up with a replay of one of my favourite interviews with registered nutritional therapist, Megan Hallett. I'll leave the old intro in as it gives you a dive into Megan and her work, but one of the reasons why I wanted to share this episode is because we've been talking a lot about blood sugar on the show lately and in this episode, Megan shares how to eat for blood sugar balance if you're fully plant-based, as it can take a little extra work for some of people and Megan wrote an entire cookbook dedicated to this topic. Megan Hallett is the co-author of The Happy Balance, which she wrote with period expert Nicole Jardim. I absolutely love this book and recommend it to everyone. The cookbook not only gives us an awesome quick stop tour of our hormones and why health foundations like sleep and stable blood sugar are so crucial, but it also includes 60 beautifully nourishing, hormone feeding and blood sugar balancing plant-based recipes. Megan is a certified Integrative Nutrition Coach, is studying at CNM to become a Nutritional Therapist and is also a food writer and recipe developer. As you can tell from the length of this interviewed, I LOVED talking to Megan and ended up getting really specific with her about the ins and outs of balancing our hormones. In this episode, we talk about her experience with PCOS, managing PCOS with blood sugar balancing, what blood sugar balance actually is and why it's important for endometriosis and so much more, as you'll come to hear! Megan's book is available on Amazon and wherever good books are sold - and right here! Welcoming back my dear friend Shelley, an Integrative Nutrition Coach (@shelley.western) to unpack A LOT in this episode. Grab a latte or some snacks, pull up a chair or go on a walk with us - we have a lot to talk about. Everything from burn out, feeling lost and stressed out, escaping toxic diet culture, focusing on gratitude and shifting your perspective, finding food freedom and so much more...   3:00 - Being afraid to ask for help, feeling drained and like we can't keep up with life. The pressure of all the things we feel we need to do as women, as entrepreneurs etc, you don't need to do it all by yourself.   6:00 - Feeling burnt out. Grieving an old version of you, and figuring out what is truly aligned for you. Symptoms of burn out and what I realized in order to heal and keep moving forward.   9:00 - Physical manifestations of burn out, stress induced migraines. Diet culture taking over and running our body's into the ground...   12:00 - What happened when I went through a toxic break up, a car accident and was dealing with chronic pain out of nowhere. How your body shuts down and forces you to slow down when you're burnt out or in desperate need of rest and compassion. You are a human being, not a machine.   15:00 - What I'm doing now after a period of burn out and severe exhaustion/depression. What I realized is actually important in my life, and how I'm prioritizing what is aligned.    19:00 - Gratitude mindset and being present in your life. Why we can't compare ourselves to others, and how can we focus on all the good in our lives. How the mundane things are the most special moments.   25:00 - Finding food freedom, giving yourself unconditional permission to enjoy food and hour cravings, how to ultimately free yourself from food guilt and toxic diet culture type mindsets...   28:00 - Was Shelley vegan? How disordered eating can manifest and how we tried to convince ourselves that we didn't like certain foods, even though it was really just us tricking ourselves into staying stuck in disorder eating patterns - what we thought was normal, but it was truly harmful. All or nothing mindsets and how these sabotage us.   30:00 - Full body yes's, and no longer punishing yourself - how can you become more aligned in your life, and choose things that feel really good - the messy parts of finding food freedom, and accepting where you're at

Today's episode is a compassionate letter to Gwyneth Paltrow who, on Instagram this week, talked about her "wellness plan" which included her sharing what she eats in a day. If you didn't get to see the interview, you can learn more in this New York Post article which quipped that Gwyneth's daily food routine sounded like, "colonoscopy prep."  But the goal of today's podcast is not to criticize or condemn Gwyneth. Instead, in this open letter, author and Christian body image coach, Heather Creekmore gently encourages Gwyneth with some data and science to help her see that her "wellness" plan may actually be related to sickness. Heather shares the truth in love with this celebrity who has pressures around her body and appearance that are greater than what most women can understand. Heather shares with Gwyneth some of the data around how dangerous it is to a body to eat this little each day, and how many of the health issues--both mental and physical--that we face as epidemics today--may be connected to starvation diets and calorie restriction. Gwyneth isn't a woman who needs more criticism. She's a woman who needs more love and compassion to help her fight the lies of body image idolatry and disordered eating. Let's pray that she will see the freedom offered through Christ alone. Find out more about Heather Creekmore, Christian body image coach, and Compared to Who?. Katie helps women over 30 to nourish their mind & body for optimal fertility health so they can confidently conceive with ease. coaching towa After experiencing a lack of support and education through her fertility and pregnancy journey, she became determined to advocate for women's health. Katie is passionate about supporting and empowering women on their fertility and pregnancy transition into motherhood using her calm, gentle guidance and taking a holistic approach focusing on nutrition, lifestyle, and mind-body connection. Favorite takeaways: 1. Connecting to people is such a ray of sunshine that we really really need. 2. I think that's the really beautiful thing about motherhood is it teaches you to slow down. 3. I think once you accept and realize that you cannot please the masses and that it's none of their business anyway- it just makes it a lot easier to deal with life. 4. We spend so much time planning the wedding, planning for the nursery, but how much time do most of spend working on our health and overall well-being to conceive? 5. When we are stressed out all the time we are teaching our kids that that's what you're supposed to be and that's what makes you a good person because you are the person they look up to the most, and so they are learning from your example, and if you're example is my worth comes from being busy all the time, that's what they are learning, that's what you are teaching them. And then as they grow into adulthood, that's what they are gonna take with them. 6. We have options as women, and it's our duty to inform ourselves of those options. 7. I'm very very passionate about having women feel strong and confident in their voice, but I think first you need to have that background knowledge and education so that you can feel confident. 8. Taking a stance really helps build confidence and empowerment. 9. Energetic balance: making sure you're not in that fight or flight, making sure that your nervous system is calm, and trying to reduce stress as much as you can and not come from a place of fear and control but coming from a place of trust, surrender, and flow. 10. Whatever life throws at you is meant for you and is there for a reason. Our initial reaction is to fight it, but we need to just embrace it and learn from it and be grateful for what we have. “I wanted to spend more time with my baby than with my blender,” explains Cassandra Curtis about what inspired her to Co-Founding Once Upon a Farm, the first HPP, organic, non-GMO baby food to be available in the United States. As an Integrative Nutrition Coach with an extensive background in the health and wellness spaces, she was committed to giving her three children nutrient-dense foods from the time they were babies. Yet, as a working mom, it was difficult to find the time to shop for, prep and blend her own food, and the few pre-made options weren't up to standard. Knowing there must have been plenty of mothers having the same problem, she set out to find the solution, creating a line of foods that children loved and moms could feel confident serving to them. With actress Jennifer Garner spreading the word as the Chief Brand Officer, the company continues to expand, serving children up to six years old. Key takeaways from today's discussion include: Whatever you're struggling with, there's a good chance others are, too. And by solving your own problems you help solve theirs, too. For moms, word of mouth marketing works best. Other key methods are influencers, blogs, in-store sampling and coupons. Brand loyalty and trust is everything. It must be built from the ground up over time, and the founder must always uphold the values of the brand. Family is first and that should show through in the corporate space. Surround yourself with people who have done it before. Pick their brains and get to know them. Quotes • “There was such a big need for it. I mean, more and more parents understood and continue to understand the importance of childhood nutrition in the first 1000 days.” (10:01-10:11 | Cassandra) • “The key is to keep going. And to also be flexible and nimble when you need to change direction because sometimes we can have this idea that this is the way, it's the only right way, but maybe it's not. So just kind of opening your mind to maybe saying no more.” (39:57-40:18 | Cassandra) • “Jen is a big piece of it, too. She is the megaphone for the brand. So we do get a lot of awareness because of her. And that's been a plus.” (25:03-25:07 | Cassandra) Connect with Cassandra Curtis: Instagram Cassandra | http://www.instagram.com/cassandracurtis Instagram Once Upon a Farm | http://www.instagram.com/onceuponafarm Website | http://www.onceuponafarm.com Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Dear FoundHer on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Every year fertility rates are declining, especially in the most developed countries. Birth rates are lower, and more and more couples are turning to fertility medicine like IVF. The process is stressful, expensive, and emotional. For many it is simply outside of what they can afford, or manage within their lifestyles. Morgan Rockwell offers a different approach. Her techniques and treatments come from ancient Oriental Medicine. Here's what Morgan says about it: Street-Cred? I have a background in Western Laboratory Sciences. I have a Master's in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAcOM) with a clinical emphasis on integrative fertility. I am a board-certified Acupuncturist and Herbalist. I am an Integrative Nutrition Coach. I believe wholeheartedly in integrative medicine. It allows the body to remember how to heal itself, which provides more lasting results. When it comes to hormonal health and fertility, there is a lot of mis-information, myths and complete misunderstanding of remedies. (Like putting listerine in your belly button) No judgment whatsoever if you tried it, because the belly button is actually one place to affect fertility, you just want to use a different remedy! I have helped 100's women apply the correct information for them to balance their hormones in a natural, holistic way to successfully conceive, carry full term, and deliver healthy babies. Morgan works together with western medicine to get the best outcomes possible for her patients. Take-aways:-We should care about our thyroid health because our thyroid has multiple jobs in our bodies. It provides energy, fuels metabolism, and regulates hormones-Hypothyroid = slow and tired-Hyperthyroid = quick, hyperfunctioning-Infertility can be tied to either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, but more commonly its hypothyroidism-Ask your provider to check a full thyroid panel (T4, T3, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies)-Be an advocate for your own health! Don't be afraid to share with your provider what you have learned and why you want a certain test or why you have a certain concern-The thyroid senses and responds to change-There are multiple possible causes of hypothyroidism: stress (esp. chronic stress), lack of sleep, toxicity, eating high inflammatory foods-NOURISH your thyroid by reducing stress, sleeping enough, and eating clean-You may need medication and/or supplement support for your thyroid, and that's OK!Tag me (@nfppharmacist) and Heather (@heather_tesch) and let us know your take-aways!Do you have a thyroid condition? Most of us know that we are non physical consciousness living in a physical world. Knowing that is powerful - but we still have to learn to live within this reality while carrying around our physical avatars. Being enlightened or spiritual doesn't exempt us from feeling the effects of stress in our lives emotionally and physically. But it can certainly help you define just how, how much if any you want to tolerate and learn to manage. The human body is an incredible, complex entity designed to perform a wide range of functions. As complicated and capable as it is, plenty can disrupt it's ability to function efficiently. One of these things is chronic stress. Stress is the state the body goes into when faced with perceived threats. Over time, the effects of stress throughout the body can become more and more pronounced. Symptoms can manifest themselves in many ways, but one of the most common is Anxiety, Depression even feeling a total loss of control and energy. How can we reduce stress when we live in a society built on getting things done faster, quicker, wanting more and being told that our pace in life will define our level of success. My very special guest today is Marina Kirik. Her journey led her to finding alignment and bridging the gap between her physical self and higher self. Her story is so relatable, honest and moving. The concept of the 1500 (or 1200) calorie a diet has been a popular dieting method for decades--but more and more nutritionists, dietitians, and others are exposing the truth that most of us need more than that for healthy brain function. Today I'm joined Nicky Chapman, a fiancé, mama to be + Finance Manager turned Integrative Nutrition Coach, living in Canberra, Australia. After overcoming Anorexia 15 years ago, Nicky turned to the health and fitness industry. Over time she ended up taking things too far. She was stressed out, over-training, and under-eating. Instead of dealing with emotional stress that felt out of my control, she tried to manage it in ways that have ended up negatively affecting her health, consequently developing Hypothalamic Amenorrhea at a time where she was desperate to get pregnant. Realising that being fit didn't necessarily equal healthy, was the massive wake up call she needed. Nicky ended up changing career paths, re-educating herself and learning about the importance of nourishing the mind as well as the body.  Eventually, she healed not only her body but her relationship with it, and fell pregnant naturally.. Few people know, I almost died (or at least felt like I was dying) from toxicity about 10 years ago. That's why this conversation is so important to me. And it should be for you. For the sake of your health as well as your family. Cheryl is speaking 100% from the heart and personal experience. Meet our Feature Guest My message is simple, “eliminate toxins, heal your chronic pain. Own your own health." I got sick and didn't want a life of pain and pills. Thus began an odyssey that culminated in Meyer’s writing the manual she wishes she’d had when she got sick. In her award winning book It Feels Good to Feel Good: Learn to Eliminate Toxins, Reverse Inflammation and Feel Great Again, Meyer explains how she discovered she was suffering from inflammation and autoimmune disease, how she actively searched out, purged, and replaced toxins in her life, how she found the right doctor (a Functional MD), and how she finally returned to wellness. Eliminating toxins was a big step in reducing Cheryl’s chronic pain. Eliminating toxins was a critical step in healing her leaky gut, which is the cause of inflammation. As she regained her health, she returned to school and became a health coach to share her new knowledge with others. She comments, “I wrote this book for people with autoimmune disease and inflammation, but really, it’s for everyone. Inflammation is a root cause of many of our illnesses and disease, cancer, heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, Type I and Type II diabetes, possibly even autism. Inflammation inhibits weight loss. I have given talks to people with autoimmune disease but also to people who are cancer survivors, people who are stroke survivors, moms with children with health issues, and millennials that don’t want to get sick like their parents. Toxins are everywhere and impacting our health, the health of our children, and the health of our earth. I would like people to eliminate the toxins now and not wait until they get sick and tired of being sick and tired.” She adds, “It’s all about toxic load. Each toxin that is eliminated is one step closer to health.” Cheryl just turned 70 and feels better than she did in her 50”s. She is passionate to share her message. Cheryl holds a BA from the University of California Berkeley. She is a Integrative Nutrition Coach and received that designation from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition©, in New York City in 2017. She is a self-employed business owner and is a member of Wellness Universe. Her book "It Feels Good to Feel Good" has won 13 awards to date.
