Welcome to episode 222 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We're super stoked for this week's episode for a couple of reasons. First, we survived April Fool's Day. Second, FORM Swim is sponsoring the show all month long. And last, but not least, we have 3x Olympian and Head of Coaching Science at FORM Swim, Brian Johns on the show this week to talk about all about the Smart Goggle. But first…This episode is sponsored by FORM Swim. Smart Swim 2 google features AR goggle based display that can show 9 real-time metrics including Pace, Stroke Rate, Stroke Count, Distance Per Stroke (DPS), Splits, Time, Distance, Calories, and Heart Rate● Directional headings in open-water● HeadCoach Metrics, including head pitch, head roll, time to neutral, interval and setpacing.Training UpdateApril 15th is the totally arbitrary day that we will begin training for ÖTILLÖ Whistler. Almost time to start busting the Swimrun rust! Almost.ShoutoutThis week's shoutout goes to Gerry Rodrigues of Tower26. He introduced us to the Smart Goggles way back in Episode 203 and, since whenever Gerry makes a recommendation we listen, we got them for our pool swimming. The rest is history! Feats of EnduranceThis week's award goes to friend of the show (and friend of Aquatic Park in San Francisco) Erika G. She recently swam from Candlestick to Aquatic Park. A cool 9ish mile swim (16,000yds) in an even cooler 2 hours and 25ish minutes. A worthy feat indeed!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff.Show BusinessSwimrun season is almost here! It's a good time to check in on your gear and replenish anything that might need replacement or upgraded. A good place to start is the Swimrun Swap Meet! Check it out on Facebook and buy/sell/trade your Swimrun gear.Brian Johns, Head of Coaching Science at FORM SWIMIt was great to chat with Brian. As we mention in the interview, we've been using the Smart Swim goggles for a couple of months so it was great to get the inside story of FORM Swim, the cool tech of their goggles and learn about Brian's role as Head of Coaching Science. So much good stuff!Enjoy!~~~That's it for this week's show. If you are enjoying the Löw Tide Böyz, be sure to subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast player and leave us a five-star rating and review since that's the best way for people to discover the show and the sport of Swimrun. Welcome to episode 128 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We have a great show for everyone this week! Joining us in Studio G are Liza Dunham and Mike Schiepke, a.k.a., Team Cali-Coed. We first met Liza and Mike in Catalina in 2020 and kept seeing them at the races. We've wanted to have them on the podcast for a while and we're super stoked to share our conversation. But first...Training UpdateÖdyssey Swimrun Casco Bay is 5 weeks away!! We've got some “robust” Swimrun practices coming up the next few weekends as we start fine tuning our training and work on transitions, swimming straight, fueling as much as possible, etc.ShoutoutsThis week we are shouting out our newest Patron on Patreon: Lisa Decker. Lisa has been a supporter of us since the beginning and we were super stoked to finally get to meet her in person at last year's Ödyssey Swimrun Austin event. She even had a LTBz sticker on her car. Thank you so much for the support Lisa!Feats of EnduranceWe haven't done a feats of endurance segment in a few weeks so there are several worthy winners that we want to highlight. In no particular order, a tip of the hat to Justin Young (training for the new Folsom Swimrun), Justin May (Swimrunning in Bellingham), and Scott Suurmeyer (crushing a 106 mile Unbound gravel race in Kansas). Keep up the strong work!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWelcome to the LTBz news desk!Since our last TWIS, there have been a bunch of awesome races and even better stories. Our favorite story though is the return of the super team of Fanny Kuhn and Desirée Andersson at ÖTILLÖ Isles of Scilly. True to form, they crushed the female division and finished third overall. One of our favorite events, EX Swimrun's Ark Supersprint took place this past weekend and it was an epic day. Desirée repeated as Women's champion and Hugo Tormento (a.k.a. 2022 Male Swimrunner of the year if the award was being given today) was the Men's champion. We plan on having EX race director Nicholas Roman back on the show to talk about this year's race so stay tuned for that! Looking forward, there are a couple really cool events coming up this weekend that we want to highlight.Over in the UK, As Keen As Mustard's Nene Park Swimrun Festival is taking place this weekend and we can't wait to see all the photos. We love this race series and highly recommend that folks check out our interview with Nicky and Chelsey Bailey, the mother and daughter race directing duo of As Keen As Mustard. Also in the UK, the folks at We Swimrun are hosting their Tal Y Llyn Swimrun this Sunday. It's a solo, sprint course of 10km (8km trail, 2km swim) in Snowdonia National Park, Wales. This race is ideal for first timers, and a great place to meet a future race partner!Skipping over to France, the seventh edition of Swimrun Cote Vermeille is taking place over two days this weekend. This event offers 5 distances including an ÖTILLÖ Merit Race distance of 63km which looks stout to say the least. New for this year, they are offering a relay option for the 63km distance which is pretty cool and the first relay option that we've seen. Our favorite distance might be the 4km kids Swimrun though. That is it for this week. Feel free to reach out and let us know if there's anything that you'd like for us to mention on the show.UpdatesFor folks racing Ödyssey Swimrun Casco Bay in July, we are going to host our 2nd Annual Post-Race Party at a brewery in downtown Portland somewhere. We will share more details as we figure them out but we hope to see you there. Our friends at Precision Fuel and Hydration have just released their new p30 Caffeine Gels and spoiler alert: they are delicious! Best of all they don't taste like science. Want to check them out? Use the code LOWTIDE22 at checkout to save 15% off of your first order.Team Cali-CoedIt was so great to finally sit down with Liza and Mike for a proper chat. We joke around a lot about folks needing to pass the vibe check when it comes to Swimrun and in our opinion Team Cali-Coed just exude cool Swimrun vibes. In this conversation we talked about their Swimrun journey, gushed over Tower 26 and Gerry Rodrigues's training methodologies, and why Swimrun is the greatest. Liza and Mike embody everything that is great about Swimrun and we know that you will love this conversation as much as we did. Enjoy! That's it for this week's show. With Helene’s help, we’ve got a jump start on getting a third scholarship funded. You can donate to Wild Swimrun at lowtideboyz.com.Next up, we have a combo shoutout for a great training crew from North Carolina. A group of eight of them are doing their first Swimrun at Lake James in a few weeks. (They were supposed to do the race last year to celebrate Chris’s 60th birthday, but COVID.) So best of luck Chris (and Happy 61st Birthday), Bob, Al, Bobby, Ryan, Kristen, Brian, and Bernard. Thanks for listening to the show and prepare to have an awesome time at Lake James! Finally, we wanted to give an extra special shoutout to Trista Mennen. She was recently selected to be a Wild Swimrun Ambassador and we can’t think of a better person to represent the inclusive spirit of Swimrun and the mission of Wild Swimrun to get more women and girls into the sport. Her enthusiasm is infectious and she’s personally gotten a small army of people to get super stoked on Swimrun. Thank you for everything that you’ve done and will do for the sport.Feats of EnduranceThis week’s winner is none other than Chipper’s brother, Michael. A stoke fest all around for sure.We chatted with Fabio about all kinds of stuff from his athletic background, to his role in the Rio Olympics and the ITU circuit, to his entrepreneurial spirit, and ultimately, to how he found Swimrun. Fabio also talked to us about how influential (and helpful) Michael Lemmel and Mats Skott of ÖTILLÖ were in helping him create his first race and have it be the first merit race in South America. (Side note: It was so friggin cool of them to take the time to help Fabio!) (Second side note: The Swedish Consulate in Brazil also supported Fabio’s efforts to grow the sport!) Welcome to episode fifty-three of the Low Tide Boyz - A Swimrun Podcast! This is officially year two of the show and we have something really special this week. So special in fact that we’re afraid that we may have set the bar too high for ourselves with this one. On this show we have Co-founder and chief designer of Ark Sports, Daniel Sand. This is the guy that literally came up with the concept of a Swimrun wetsuit and revolutionized the sport when he was with Head Sports and then took it to the next level when he started Ark Sports and revolutionized the sport again with the introduction of the next generation of Swimrun suits.More on this cool conversation later in the show.ShoutoutsThis week we are shouting out our wives, Kristen and Susan, for their seemingly limitless (although there is a limit) support of us and our labor of love for the sport of Swimrun. As we embark on the second year of the show, there is literally no way that this show would be possible without them.Adventure Time/Training UpdatesWith the holidays past us, we are ready to buckle down and start making some progress on our plans for charting a cool Swimrun course at Lake Sonoma. We have maps, gels, hall passes, and other stuff lined up to make this happen. We’re also starting to plan a road trip to San Diego in March to spend a weekend training with SoCal crew of Andy, Mel, Kelsie, Sean, Phillip, and the rest. We hope that this will be first of many road trips taking the show (and the training) on the road.In other news, Chris joined Tower26 and is committed to making more gains in the pool to be able to keep up with Chipper. If you want to know why, check out Episode 32 with Tower26 Founder, Gerry Rodrigues and Episode 42 with Tower26 coaches Megan Melgaard and Jim Lubinsky. This Week in Swimrun (Powered by Raceid.com)We’ve got some Swimrun-related news to share this week.Ödyssey Swimrun has opened registration for Orcas Island, Casco Bay, and Austin. Register by January 14 to sign up at the lowest prices of the year. They also have a new race on the calendar for 2021: Swimrun Ludington in Michigan. Feel free to email us to tip us off to any events or Swimrun news that you’d like for us to share on the show.UpdatesWe’ve got some fun things in the works for 2021 including focusing on Swimrun teams in February, helping to promote the “All The Way: The Making of Swimrun Champions” movie in March, and hosting some  live podcasting while on the road at events (COVID permitting.)  We’ve added some new content to our website that folks should check out. Under our resources tab, you can now find a 2021 US Swimrun Race Calendar for all the races that we could find. (If we’re missing one, please let us know!)This Week’s InterviewAs we mentioned at the start of the show, this week’s interview is so good! Daniel Sand is a Co-Founder and Chief Designer at Ark Sports and is singularly responsible for the Swimrun wetsuit that we all take for granted. Daniel’s journey to revolutionize Swimrun started in 2014 when he started to design the first Swimrun-specific wetsuit for HEAD. In 2017, he revolutionized the Swimrun wetsuit again when he co-founded Ark Sports and created the Swimrun wetsuit design that is commonplace today. In this interview, we cover the history of the Swimrun-specific wetsuit, its innovation over the years, and Daniel’s role at the center of that. We talked about his rationale for leaving HEAD to start Ark Sports. We also broke down the design process behind some of the key Ark Sports wetsuits like the VIGG, ORNÖ, and UTÖ and, of course, the Keel pull buoy. We asked the tough questions about product durability and learned how Ark Sports is working on that. Finally, we talked about what the future holds for Swimrun equipment and Ark Sports. If we sound like Ark Sports fanboys during this interview it’s because we are. It's hard not to root for them. You can learn more about Ark Sports here. That’s it for this week’s show. We do a deep dive into the book and their swimming methodology later in the show.In other exciting news, we’ve reached the milestone of 10,000+ downloads! We’re surprised and humbled by all the support that we’ve gotten since starting the show and have a lot of gratitude for everyone that’s checked out the show.Training UpdateWe did yet another Swimrun last weekend which was fun and Chris is in the middle of the One Punch Man Challenge where he is doing a 10k run, 100 pushups, 100 sit-ups, and 100 squats every day for a week. Why? Nobody knows, least of all him.Shout OutsThis is a special shout out to the “Dude from Costco” that recognized Chris wearing a Löw Tide Böyz shirt and chatted him up. It was totally random but definitely the highlight of an otherwise ordinary trip to Costco. Feats of Endurance Weekly AwardThis week’s winner is Kawika (Beek) from Team Envol Baywatch. He did the Pier to Pier Quest and submitted an audio clip describing his 27 Mile point to point Swimrun adventure for your listening pleasure. We also got our first Feats of Endurance award acceptance speech! We love seeing everyone working out in our Strava Club so keep up the great work!LTBz UpdatesOur latest column in Triathlete Magazine, How to Pick an Awesome Swimrun Team Name, is out now so make sure that you check it out and give it a thumbs up if you liked it.Our new project, the International Swimrun Adventure Guide, is up and running and we’ve received a bunch more submissions. If you have a great training route that you don’t want to keep secret you can head over to our website and fill out the form on our homepage and we’ll start compiling the entries and getting them listed on the site.In other news, our next episode of Gear Talk will be coming out soon and we will be reviewing the Vivobarefoot ECS Tempest, give some updates on previous gear that we’ve reviewed, and a first impressions report of the Ark Sports Vigg Swimrun Wetsuit.InterviewOur guests this week recently published a new book all about training for open water swimming. Gerry Rodrigues and Emma-Kate Lidbury put together an excellent resource for everyone looking to get better in open water. While the book is centered around the triathlete experience, there is a lot of crossover with Swimrun and we think that our listeners will get a lot of value from the wealth of expertise that Gerry and Emma-Kate shared with us.In the interview, Gerry and Emma-Kate shared their background and how they got the idea to write the book and how it all came together over a year later. We chatted about their new book and did a deep dive into some of the questions that we had about the Tower 26 Method and how it translates to Swimrun training and races. We touch on a lot of swim training and open water strategies. We also discussed how the Tower 26 Method is a great way to be “race ready” for triathlon and/or Swimrun. There are a lot of great tips in this episode so we definitely recommend that you take some notes and check out the book, Triathlon Swimming: Master Open-Water Swimming with the Tower 26 Method if you’re looking to take your training and racing to the next level. Gerry Rodrigues started swimming in the open water 50 years ago. He has over 100 open water titles and is one of the most experienced swim coaches of our time. He is the founder of Tower 26, a coaching empire that focuses on preparing triathletes to be race-ready. In this episode, he gives us the keys to the kingdom by sharing his well-informed experiential wisdom on swimming for the sport of triathlon. Gerry understands the needs of the triathlete and the distinct differences between what triathletes bring to the water as opposed to swim-focused athletes. He believes that it is the job of a triathlon coach to calculate the best use of time for their busy triathletes by using swim training sets that maximize time and sport-specific benefits. The physical is not the only thing we chat about in this episode. We also dive into the subject of doubt and Gerry's experience with feeding the wolves of our minds. He assures us all that both light and dark days are normal for every human being. Gerry is a wealth of information and a confident voice that brings clarity to an arena of much confusion. This podcast was a long time coming, and we are grateful to share it with the YT community today. We appreciate your support of the show. More ways to support the show are below. Namaste - Jess

Today’s focus is on…well…FOCUS... and remaining present in your training in order to maximize your training yield. Something that is often overlooked in training by both athletes and coaches is the importance of presence - focused awareness on the task. Whatever your quest or goal, being focused and present is a critical piece of the puzzle to maximize your precious training time. This becomes even more critical when you are time-starved. Being focused and present ensures the best execution and the biggest performance yield. In this episode, Matt discusses the many reasons to be present and the best path to set up these habitual practices during your training. It is often said that, “As you train, so shall you race.” If you don’t train with presence and focus, you can’t expect to have mental resiliency on race day. Focus helps you develop your innate sense of pacing and effort and, with practice, can become habitual automation. Quite simply, you develop your inner animal.  Tower 26 Podcast with Gerry Rodrigues and Swim Smooth Description of Minimum Form Pace in Running Follow Purple Patch Fitness and learn more about our Coaching Services, Training Camps, Promotions and Matt's Latest Book, Fast Track Triathlete: Purple Patch Fitness Website Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Instagram Thanks for taking a listen and, if you like what you hear, please subscribe, share, rate and review. Fear of sharks? There's a band for that. Sharkbanz is something you can wear around your wrist or ankle in the water that uses a magnetic technology to help deter sharks. If you’re a surfer or swimming in open water a lot, this episode talks about the technology in layman's terms, some of the research behind the product and the company’s active partnership with Shark Defense Technologies to improve its effectiveness. While the company does not promise to entirely protect you from all shark attacks, Mersereau says it's a way to "reduce the risk" and give someone peace of mind. -Share this story: http://bit.ly/2AXpZQb -Thank you to Davis Mersereau with Sharkbanz (www.sharkbanz.com) and Gerry Rodrigues with Tower 26 (www.tower26.com).
