Why Do Railroad Workers Keep Dying on the Job? (w/ Nick Wurst, Matt Weaver, Mark Burrows, & Ross Grooters)

"Last Wednesday, a fellow rail worker was gravely injured on the job and lost his life," a Feb 6 email from Railroad Workers United reads. "Our brother Chris Wilson, who worked for Norfolk Southern, was critically injured in its Decatur rail yard Wednesday and died Thursday at Huntsville Hospital." Another email from Feb. 9 reads, "On January 15th, a fellow rail worker was killed on the job in Ohio." Then, on Feb 17, another email: "On February 13th, a fellow rail worker was killed on the job in North Carolina. Brother Randall M. Howell, 41, of Allied Federation Lodge 563, died following a road crossing incident in Roanoke Rapids, N.C." Why are railroad workers all over the country dying on the job? And what can be done to stop these needless deaths? We talk with four railroad workers and members of Railroad Workers United (RWU).  Panelists include: Nick Wurst, a freight conductor in Massachusetts, legislative rep for his union local, and currently serving on the RWU international steering committee; Matt Weaver, a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division-International Brotherhood of Teamsters  (BMWED-IBT) for nearly 30 years, legislative director for his union in Ohio, and a founding member of RWU: Mark Burrows, a retired locomotive engineer with 37 years in the industry, and the editor of "The Highball," RWU's quarterly newsletter: and Ross Grooters, RWU co-chair, member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), also serving on the BLET-IBT Iowa state legislative board, with over 20 years in the industry.  Additional links/info below… Railroad Workers United website, Facebook page, and Twitter page Ross's Twitter page Maximillian Alvarez, The Real News Network, "They Were Just Another East Palestine Family—Until Norfolk Southern Set Off a Bomb in Their Lives" Maximillian Alvarez, The Real News Network, "East Palestine Residents Still Need Help—the Labor Movement Should Be an Ally" Maximillian Alvarez, The Real News Network, "He Tried to Raise the Alarm about Railroad Safety. As retail heads into a busy holiday season, live from Las Vegas Market, Dawn Grooters of Broken Vessel Sales joins me to help you prepare. There is a common theme in our discussion today: relationships and connection = MORE sales. Dawn shares tips to reach customers by standing out with events, gift wrapping, open houses, and the lost art of phone calls. You can use phone calls to personally invite your loyal customers to events, check on abandoned carts, and get to know their needs. The more you know your customers, the more you know how to help them with gift guides and more.Dawn also urges retailers to take this pre-holiday season to analyze their strengths and weaknesses. Really capitalize on those strengths and special talents within your team.Speaking of the team, this is such a busy time, and an overworked staff can get close to burnout. Show your appreciation with extra treats, samples, and gifts, and maybe an after-holiday celebration!Don't forget to take care of yourself too. Store owners need to prepare at home and in the store, whether this means setting up meal services, scheduling downtime, or pre-planning displays and events. The fourth quarter is already the busiest season; make it a successful one too!I'm rooting for your success. What's Inside:Selling techniques for retailers this holiday season.Holiday 2023: What do retailers need to know? How to sell more in Q4.Tips for beating holiday burnout in the busy retail world.Mentioned In This Episode:Broken Vessel SalesPodcast — Broken Vessel Sales Solutions, LLC.Profit FirstHubSpotLive From the Las Vegas Market: Inside Sales and Relationship Building with Dawn GrootersEVOLVE 2024 in Denver, CO - Crystal MediaSocial Media Hooks and Hacks - Crystal MediaCrystal Media InsidersCrystal MediaCrystal on InstagramCrystal Media on InstagramCrystal Media Co - YouTube

In this episode, we speak with Stacy Grooters, the current President of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education. Stacy shares her vision for leading POD, reflects on its history of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and discusses how educational developers can advocate for higher education. Stacy Grooters is currently the Executive Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Boston College and the President-Elect of the POD Network. She earned her PhD in English literature, with a concentration in Women's Studies, from the University of Washington, where she also taught in the departments of English, American Ethnic Studies, and Women Studies. She then spent eight years at Stonehill College, a small liberal arts, Catholic college in Massachusetts, where she founded the Center for Teaching and Learning and co-directed the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program. Stacy's research focuses on the ways that commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion are practiced within the field of educational development. Her 2014 article, “Tracking POD's Engagement with Diversity,” analyzes 35 years of POD conference sessions and journal articles to track changes in how questions of diversity have been taken up by the field. Her current project seeks to define what it means to be an “equity-minded educational developer” and identify the pathways that educational developers take towards growing an equity-minded practice. From unions in the United States fighting to save our supply chain from the destruction wrought by corporate tycoons, Wall Street vampires, and bought-off politicians, to the National Union of Rail, Maritime, and Transport Workers (RMT) leading the fight against austerity politics and ruling-class union busting in the United Kingdom, to rail workers with the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) in France joining their compatriots in the streets in a general strike against President Emmanuel Macron's neoliberal attack on the country's beloved pension system, rail workers around the world are fighting different battles in the same war: the class war. In this special international episode, we bring together a panel of rail workers from the US, UK, and France to talk about what they are up against, what the struggle looks like in their corners of the world, and what we can all do to connect those struggles and build international worker solidarity. Panelists include: Ross Grooters of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) and Railroad Workers United in the US; Cat Cray and Clayton Clive of the RMT in the UK; Matthieu Bolle-Reddat of the CGT Cheminots Versailles in France.  Additional links/info below... We're live at the Las Vegas Market. Dawn Grooters started her company Broken Vessel Sales in 2020 when she noticed a need between retailers and wholesalers, creating and working with inside sales and making connections. She works with wholesalers, vendors, and rep groups, and even helps retailers. As the expert in all things sales, Dawn offers some great tips for small businesses that might be experiencing slow and small conversions in traffic. All her advice really comes down to what she calls the top business strength of the year, Building Relationships. If you want to see more sales, start asking questions, call top customers, and get to know them. Questions like: What do you need? What's your usual budget? What categories are you drawn to? Can really go a long way. We all know that it's tough out here in this economy. Dawn's advice? Stay focused on inventory but with a slightly different lens. Don't let the recession scare you, you just need to tweak and add things by just looking at things with a new perspective. These times are when creativity and innovation can flourish if you let it. Broken Vessel Sales also provides a service of creating sales calls to small retailers for vendors and following up with leads. She has a special mission and drive to hire stay-at-home moms as her sales callers because of its remote and flexible nature. This really was a great chat! Over that time span he endured great hardship and torture. His wife suffered greatly as well as many during the Communist reign. Get a behind the scenes look at the movie Tortured for Christ which is a real life story about Richard Wurmbrand, a Christian martyr,  who stood firm in the Christian faith in the midst of being brutally persecuted.  The movie’s director, John Grooters, joins the Men Unplugged show as Jeff and John look at Richard’s story for practical ways on how you can stand firm in your faith.  So whether you’re at home, work, or in the community you will be encouraged and equipped to stand firm and true to your faith as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Key Tips: If you stand for what’s right according to God’s Word you are going to get persecuted in some way.  It may not come in the form of physical torture but it may be in the form of judgment, losing a business deal, a job, or even a friendship. There are two types of Christians, those who sincerely love God and those who just as sincerely say they love God.  Original quote from Italian Preacher and Martyr, Girolamo Savonarola.   “Many men that came to room 4 were atheist, but not one of them died an atheist.”  Richard Wurmbrand in Tortured for Christ God does not call us to be politically correct.  God calls us to be true to His Word. As men of God we need to live in such a way realizing the Holy Spirit resides in us and that we need to love even our enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Just like King David, when the chips are down in your life seek the Lord. Sometimes what you think is a bust in society’s eyes is actually a victory in the eyes of God. If you cannot get over yourself, you have not been transformed by the Gospel. This weekend marks the launch of a new video-based curriculum to allow your family, Bible study group or Sunday School class to take an up-close look at the lives and faith of Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand. Our guests are Cole Richards, President of The Voice of the Martyrs and one of the on-screen speakers in the video series, and John Grooters, the director of the video segments as well as of Tortured For Christ – The Movie. Listen as they describe the lessons from Richard and Sabina’s lives that most impacted them, and what they hope American Christians will draw out of this six-week study. We’ll also share how you can get a free DVD and digital download of Tortured For Christ – The Movie when you buy the curriculum video DVD and included group leader’s guide. Watch the trailer and purchase WURMBRAND six-week video curriculum. Listen to John Grooters share about the making of Tortured For Christ – The Movie in a previous episode of VOM Radio.

Michele Rigby Assad is a former undercover officer in the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency’s Directorate of Operations. Trained as a counterterrorism specialist, Michele served her country for ten years, working in Iraq and other secret Middle Eastern locations. Upon retirement from active service, Michele and her husband Joseph (also a former agent) joined a group of Americans who wished to aid persecuted Christians. Their efforts resulted in the evacuation of a group from northern Iraq that was featured on ABC’s 20/20 in December 2015.
