Mohamed Al Fayed was the flamboyant billionaire whose investments once included the luxury department store Harrods and a Premier League football club. He was the father of Dodi, who was killed alongside Princess Diana in 1997. Fayed died last year and this month the BBC has released a new investigation that portrays him in a very different light. Erica Gornall, director of “Al-Fayed: Predator at Harrods”, and Henry Porter, former UK editor of Vanity Fair, discuss the story. The US election is now just week away and the competition for viewers among the TV networks is ferocious. CNN – led by its British boss Mark Thompson - thinks they may have a secret weapon for Saturday nights; a US version of “Have I Got News For You”. Jimmy Mulville of Hat Trick Productions, is the brains behind it. Nayeema Raza, co-host of Semafor's Mixed Signals podcast, gives her verdict. Saad Mohseni co-founded the Moby Group, Afghanistan's largest media company. Despite the Taliban being back in power, his TV channel, TOLO, still broadcasts news and educational programmes - and uses female anchors. When Major General George Owen Squier coined the term Muzak, back in the early 1930s, the idea according to elevator music enthusiast Joseph Lanza was “to have a civic use of music”. At Muzak Corporation’s height during the late 50s and 60s, this practically became a reality as their in-house orchestral arrangements emanated from the walls of hotel lobbies, businesses, airport lounges, doctors offices and across factory floors. This programme serves as part love-letter, part obituary to the music by Muzak and the particular aesthetic with which it's associated. But it also examines the ethics of such a business model - bound up with ideas of freewill, behavioural science and the use or misuse of technology. Includes contributions from author Joseph Lanza, artist Mika Taanila, music scholar Caroline Potter, science historian Alexandra Hui, composer Mark Mothersbaugh (from the band Devo), Nigel Rodgers - founder Pipedown, and former Vice President of Programming for Muzak, Rod Baum. John Calvin, Institutes, Dedicatory Preface (1559) "Such we are in the sight of God the Father, as is the very Son of God Himself. Let it be counted folly, or frenzy, or fury, or whatsoever. It is our wisdom, and our comfort; we care for no knowledge in the world but this, that man hath sinned, and God hath suffered; that God hath made Himself the sin of men, and that men are made the righteousness of God." What happened to Jesus between His death on Good Friday, and His resurrection on Easter Sunday? Article 3, in line with the Apostle's Creed, states that Jesus 'descended into Hell'. (Unless you're using some modern versions of the creed, which says that He descended to the dead...) This week we dig into some of the ambiguities around the language and meaning of Article 3 and the creed, how the church historically, and the reformers in particular, understood this tenet of the faith, and how it informs our thinking about Jesus, ourselves, death, and the Gospel hope of resurrection and eternal life. Mother of God? Co-redemptrix? The Second Eve? Just how should we think of The Virgin Mary, as Anglicans standing in the tradition of the reformation? How can we avoid a reductionistic, reactionary, or even disrespectful view of the mother of the Lord Jesus? What can we learn from the Scriptures, the early church, and the reformers? How does typology shape how we think of Mary and her role in salvation history? And why couldn't Cain be more like his brother?? In this episode, we discuss all these questions and more!
