Drawing from my experience as a former credit union CEO, I can attest that every credit union grapples with similar challenges related to member loyalty and engagement – precisely the issues that Nook was established to address.”  Just what is Nook?  It's a content serving platform that helps credit unions build closer relationships - and maybe sell more pertinent products to - select consumer groups.Once upon a time credit unions had intimate ties with members and genuinely knew a lot about them.  When every member - and board member - worked at XYZ factory or newspaper or school it was rather easy to know them.Nowadays, as more credit unions have community charters and the SEG based institutions often have dozens of very different SEGs it's gotten harder to know thy members. The degree of difficulty has escalated further as financial services have transitioned from in person transactions to remote, digital interactions.Nook's aim is to use digital tools to build the same kind of strong ties credit unions used to have.Nook's current clients include Dort Financial Credit Union ($1.6 billion, Grand Blanc, Mich.) and TopLine Financial Credit Union ($792 million, Maple Grove, Minn.)And it's looking for more.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Isabella Graf moved to the United States from her native Germany early in life. She may be a shining example not only of proverbial "American Dream," but also of the experience and education available in the private club industry, where she is fast becoming one of its leaders. Chosen to be a regional leader for the United States Professional Tennis Association and Head Professional at The Landings in Fort Myers, Florida, Graf is looking to become a mentor in her own right after learning from so many. As a graduate of the Professional Tennis Management (PTM) program at Methodist University, and with three internships under her belt, one for each summer through her collegiate years, Graf believed, she was well prepared for the industry. That was until she realized that member relations, not teaching, is at the heart of our industry. Those internships at the clubs, she says, were crucial to her development just as much as her work in the classroom and understanding stringing techniques. Standards and character are what Isabella looks for when hiring. She realized early in her career that these were the two traits required of a leader in the hospitality business, and through her own self-reflection and discipline, raised the bar for herself, personally. And now, she looks to these traits when raising the bar for a racquets program and while hiring to fill positions to bring that program to a "best-in-class" status. Graf is going places and understands the industry far better than many of her more senior colleagues. Listen in as she explains how she looks to be a mentor in her own way, not just to other female teaching professionals, but to all in the business of member relations.

In today's episode, VGM's Craig Douglas and Ronda Buhrmester talk about the importance of taking action to pass Bill S. 1294 which would extend the 75/25 blended rate from the Cares Act. Listen as they explain why this is necessary and what you can do to help! Understanding the 75/25 Blended Rate and Why We Need Legislative Action! In 2020, amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare industry witnessed the introduction of the 75/25 blended rate through the passage of the CARES Act. This rate adjustment, named after its 75% and 25% allocation model, aimed to protect access to DME products and services in non-rural, non-competitive bid areas by temporarily increasing Medicare reimbursement rates for providers serving those areas. Craig Douglas, VP of Payer and Member Relations, and Ronda Buhrmester, Sr. Director of Reimbursement and Payer Relations, recently released a podcast going into a deep explanation of the 75/25 blended rate and why keeping them in place is so important to the industry. In this article, we will highlight some of the key points around the 75/25 blended rate, its significance, its implications for the industry, and the ongoing legislative efforts to extend its benefits. Origins of the 75/25 Blended Rate The 75/25 blended rate emerged as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic with the enactment of the CARES Act in early 2020. This legislative action was designed to ensure that medical equipment suppliers could continue providing essential services despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. The "75/25" in its name refers to the proportion of reimbursement rates calculated from two different periods: 75% from the post-competitive bidding rates and 25% from the unadjusted fee schedule in place before competitive bidding. This blended rate was implemented to counter the decline in reimbursement rates experienced in the years leading up to the CARES Act. Understanding the Blended Rate Calculation To grasp the concept of the 75/25 blended rate, let's consider an illustrative example with a CPAP device (HCPCS code: E0601). Prior to competitive bidding and rate adjustments, the reimbursement for this device was approximately $100. Through various rounds of competitive bidding, the reimbursement rate saw a substantial reduction to around $40 by 2020. The blended rate calculation takes 75% of the lower 2020 rate (75% of $40) and 25% of the pre-competitive bidding rate ($100), yielding a blended rate of approximately $55 for most non-rural areas. Extension Efforts: Senate Bill S.1294 The 75/25 blended rate significantly impacted the reimbursement landscape for specific medical equipment codes, particularly those that experienced substantial decreases due to competitive bidding. This adjustment aimed to ensure that suppliers could continue providing essential medical equipment to patients while maintaining financial sustainability. However, the 75/25 rates are not permanent; they are currently slated to end on 12/31/2023. When this happens, those rates will revert to what was in place prior to the implementation of the 75/25 blend, adjusted for inflation. This will mean a decrease in reimbursement of up to 40% for many DME products provided to non-rural, non-CBA beneficiaries. Click here to view a chart with examples of what the impact will look like for several high-utilization products.Click here for more information on MLNs in this CMS article. For more information and to take action read this article.

Can AI - artificial intelligence - be harnessed to build and strength member relations, indeed to know what this member is likely to do right now? That is the guiding belief at Senso, a Canada based AI company that now is expanding into the US market with a specific focus on credit unions. It is no secret. The credit union share of the home mortgage market has steadily eroded, as nimble fintechs grab more business. Smart AI just may give credit unions an edge in recapturing marketshare. The Senso promise is intriguing. When an institution has the right data it can predict with significant accuracy when a member is about to shift from being a home looker to a buyer. The answer is in the data, says Saroop Bharwani, Senso's founder/CEO.Right now the Senso focus is on home mortgages but, he says, the same tools will work on car loans, credit card balance transfers and more. Here is how Senso describes its approach: "Senso creates connected and contextual lending experiences, powered by predictive intelligence. We enable enterprise customers to identify and engage borrowers with personalized proactive experiences. We empower consumers with rich insights & experiences to help them make smart decisions through their home finance journey."Integration of Senso tools - which are available white labeled - is comparatively quick and easy through the leading online banking platforms. Right now, the primary Senso aim is at institutions with a billion in assets - but if a smaller institution is using an online banking platform that Senso already has integration tools for, the company wants to talk, says Bharwani.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Drive onboards new senior living communities with a culture assessment developed by the Barrett Values Centre that reveals the gap between what employees want and what they are currently experiencing. Each organization receives a culture score that can be compared to different organizations around the world, offering an actionable roadmap to a higher performance based on actual data.
