The holidays are a joyful time of year filled with family, friends, parties, cheesy Christmas movies, and of course- delicious foods, sweets, and beverages. It's a time when we put aside our woes… and sometimes our nutrition and fitness routines. A 2015 study by Harvard University found that Americans eat -on average- an excess of 200 calories per day within the 5 week period leading up to New Year's- causing an average weight gain of 4.5 pounds. A piece of pie here, some eggnog there, cookie before bed, a candy cane after lunch… That doesn't sound like much, but it adds up quickly. And few people shed the weight post-holidays as quickly as they put it on. So if you've been successful thus far on your health journey to maintain or lose weight, how can you still enjoy the holiday festivities without feeling like you have deprived yourself or jumped ship in nutrition and exercise? We are here to help!

The holidays are looking a bit different for many this year, with traveling and large family celebrations on the back burner. Cooking at home continues to be an increased part of everyday life, and is a part of our holiday celebrations as we pivot once again to maintain the comfort of what holidays always bring to our families. In an effort to make our holidays happier, Monica Nyman, senior nutrition educator and registered dietitian with the St. Louis District Dairy Council, visited WZOE’s Wake Up Princeton program recently. She shared some ideas on ways to stay healthy through the holidays. Her top tips are to start your day with breakfast and don’t skip meals. Also be sure to choose high protein foods to keep you satisfied throughout the day. She says it's important to choose a variety foods throughout the day and it's also a good idea to start meal planning and maintain or start a physical activity routine.More information is available online at stldairycouncil.org. You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram at STLDairyCouncil where they share updates of their programming and more easy recipes to make at home.

Episode 52: 4 Quick Healthy Holiday Tips Holiday Season is Here! That does not have to mean gaining 15 lbs and feeling bloated, tired, or exhausted. In this episode Ellie shares 4 quick tips to set you up for healthy success this year. TIP #1 Set intentions TIP #2 Up-level Ingredients Staying healthy during the holidays does NOT have to mean deprivation. There are SO many swap recipes and ingredient swaps you can make to up-level your favorite holiday recipes. The main way to staying energized and not gain weight over the holidays is to balance your blood sugar avoid vegetable/seed oils, and major inflammation triggers like gluten. TIP #3 Worth It Foods When it comes to the Holidays, the all or none mindset can start to set in. "Well I ate that piece of pie, so I might as well gorge on everything and start over Monday." Trade the "Cheat Day" / "All or nothing" mindset for mindful indulgences. Tip #4 Plan the Day After! The reason most people gain weight or feel low energy for the holidays is not because of 1 holiday meal. It's the slippery slope after that meal that leads to weeks off the wagon of our goals. Set yourself up to come back to your higher self and feel good ASAP SUPPORT AND ACCOUNTABILITY Do you want to maintain or actually lose weight this holiday season and feel good in your body? This is a jam-packed show with healthy holiday wisdom and a visit from Audrey and Jeff Dunham! It’s the most wonderful time of year… for gyms to sell memberships, and fad diet “gurus” to cash-in. It’s also a wonderful time for your sweet tooth with cookies and cakes tempting you everywhere you turn. But it’s not the most wonderful time of year for your scale or your health. Overindulging and putting on weight has become as much of a part of the holidays as opening gifts. But what if there was a way to make holiday treats with less fat and fewer calories? There is! And many of the plant-based options are so good that even naughty kids who leave them for Santa get bumped to the nice list. Join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll and dietitian Lee Crosby as they share healthier holiday secrets and recipes during a live broadcast from the Fruitive Restaurant in Washington, DC! Learn the best plant-based substitutes for eggs and oil, the nutritional benefits of oatmeal cookies, and how to lower cholesterol while still catering to your sweet tooth! Plus, learn how to deal with social situations at parties and family gatherings from non-vegans and how to plant ahead when you know vegan options will be limited. You won’t want to miss the recipes for the oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookies and chocolate lover’s banana bread. Then, Chuck is joined in Los Angeles by famed comedian Jeff Dunham and his plant-powered cookie creating wife, Audrey. They share how Jeff keeps it plant-based on the road, an unforgettable Thanksgiving experience with the non-vegan side of the family, and the trick to finding healthy vegan options in the last places you’d expect! Plus, Audrey unveils her new cinnamon oatmeal cookies from Peanuts Bake Shop just in time for the holidays. And you’ll hear about Jeff’s adventures taking cookies out of the oven on his tour bus as it barrels down the road at 70 miles per hour. We can’t achieve our goals without being productive. But sometimes it feels like there just aren’t enough hours in the day. Kris McPeak is a certified life coach, author, blogger, podcast host, founder of the Silver Peak Performance swim team… and she also holds a full-time job. We couldn’t think of anyone better to give us holiday productivity hacks! How does she do it all? Prioritization, routine and self-care. It all goes hand in hand. Kris spends 8 hours at the office, makes sure she gets 8 hours sleep, and that leaves 8 hours to elevate. And Kris really has made the most of those 8 hours. She’s written the books Shake it Off: Ten 10 Minute Resets For Your Day (Making Work Work For You), and Elevate Your 8: 21 Days to Prosperous Time Management, AND launched her new podcast Elevate Your 8. All this in just a few months, after attending our Rise & Bloom Mastermind in April. Whatever your goals, or no matter how long you’ve been an entrepreneur, you can always learn new ways to be more productive. Kris’s Productivity Hacks: Get a sense of how long it takes you to do the little things - showering, commuting, cooking - then figure out how much time you have left for the most important tasks. Value your time - could you create more time for yourself by delegating or hiring someone? Treat your time like your money - get the urgent things done first. Set your timer for social media time so you don’t get sucked into the rabbit hole. Prioritize - figure out what needs to be done and when. Do you have to do it today or can it wait till the weekend? Go with the flow - recognize your schedule can get messed up, and learn to be flexible. Don’t judge yourself on what you didn’t get done. Develop a morning routine. But what about this time of year? The holidays are the perfect time to connect with loved ones and new people… but it’s also easy to get overwhelmed by it all. Here are Kris and Leslie’s tips for getting through the holidays while staying healthy and productive: Don’t feel like you have to go to every party you’re invited to - it’s ok to turn down invitations to honor your self-care. Plan ahead - fuel with good food and choose the healthiest dishes at parties. Discover JOMO - the Joy Of Missing Out Always bring food! If you’re hosting, don’t worry about a signature cocktail, you can also offer non-alcoholic drinks. Bring a plant-based wine - our favorite is Le Grand Courtage sparkling wine Try Brown Brother’s dessert wine - straight from Oz, but available in the US. A Delicious Holiday Detox? And of course, we all want to look and feel fabulous during the holidays. This is a time when it’s even more important to detox, because we’re eating a little more and drinking a few extra glasses of wine. No one wants to feel sluggish and bloated at this time. What if you could add something to your regular routine that helps your body to detox naturally? Well, you can, with Teami blends. Detoxing helps get rid of these extra holiday toxins, improve your energy levels, clear up your skin, boost your metabolism and clear out the digestive tract. We love detoxing, but this usually means fasting, which is not easy to do at this time of year! That’s why we’re excited for you to try Teami Blends, a fun way to detox that fits into your normal day-to-day. In other words, you can eat and cleanse at the same time. What’s more, you can turn them into a delicious Mocha Choca latte - you’ll have to tune into the podcast for the recipe! Right now, you can get 20% off Teami Blends with discount code FoodHeals. Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU! The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health!
