Hello, fellow Pilgrims. Welcome to our third voyage with Mother Cabrini. Mother is getting ready to leave to head back to NY. It's been a year since the last voyage. Before leaving for America, she gets to visit Montmartre which is a well-known hill in Paris. It's a district in Paris and at the top of the hill in this district sits the beautiful Sacre Coeur Basilica. In English, this means, Sacred or Holy Heart. So, a perfectly fitting place for Mother Cabrini to visit. Also, Mother Cabrini is going to speak of a saint whose work we have read here on the podcast: St. Francis de Sales. Isn't that amazing? I love it when my little bevy of saints come together. So, let's start this third journey with Mother Cabrini by turning to page 43.

The story of Nadab and Abihu highlights the importance of having a holy heart in service to God, as their carelessness in offering "strange fire" resulted in immediate judgment. While Aaron's failure to eat the sin offering was also a ritual violation, his heart's grief over the loss of his sons led to God's mercy, showing that God values the condition of the heart over ritual observance. Ultimately, Jesus, as the perfect High Priest, fulfills the law's requirements with a holy, pure heart, allowing believers to approach God's holiness with confidence and offering a model of true worship that transcends mere rituals.

August 19: Saint John Eudes, Priest1601–1680Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: WhitePatron Saint of the Diocese of Baie-Comeau, QuébecHis fine education led to a life of deep prayer and identity with JesusMany educated Catholics are familiar with the great Spanish saints of the 1500s: Saints Ignatius Loyola, Francis Xavier, John of the Cross, Teresa of Ávila, and many more. They are saints of the counter-reformation era but not counter-reformation saints. Due to the reforms of a visionary Spanish cardinal long before Father Luther went mad, there was no reformation in Spain that needed countering. This sixteenth-century, Spanish golden age has a counterpart in seventeenth-century France. France in the 1600s produced Saints Francis de Sales, Vincent de Paul, John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, Margaret Mary Alacoque, Jane Frances de Chantal and today's saint, John Eudes, among many other men and women outstanding in holiness. The reforms of the Council of Trent were slow to be implemented in France, but their seeds eventually sprouted abundant spiritual, theological, and missionary fruit, including the founding of Québec, Canada, and Ville Marie de Montreal, a specifically Catholic settlement.John Eudes was born to pious but uneducated parents in a tiny town in Normandy just as the hot religious wars of the 1500s in France simmered to a boil. He was deeply impressed with his Jesuit teachers at a Catholic high school and began to think about religious life. As he fell under the holy sway of some of the great priests of his era, he decided to emulate their pattern of life. He was ordained a priest for a French version of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in 1625. Father John then became a tireless preacher of parish missions for many years. He preferred to preach in a town for at least six weeks in order to counter the widespread religious ignorance of the faithful. He desired of his hearers nothing less than a total change of life, a complete conversion. He used processions, works of theater, mimes, and whatever else he could think of to draw a congregation. Once in his presence, they learned the creed, the sacraments, an examination of conscience, the laws of morality, and all the fundamentals of the faith. Father Eudes preached Christ in full—a total God who demanded a total human response.Essential to Father Eudes' spirituality was a profound identity with the emotions and humanity of Jesus. He thought that the mysteries of the Word of God are forever unfolding, that there are always hidden depths of Scripture remaining to be discovered. The meaning of the Word of God, both written and in the flesh, will never be exhausted on earth. This means that Christ's divinity is accessed through his humanity but is never exhausted by his humanity. There is always more God to know and more God to love. This accords with Christian common sense. To assert that a passage of Scripture has been understood in its totality is to limit God's providence and to place one's own mind over God's. That Scripture does not contain error is not the sole proof of its perfection. Scripture is inspired not just for being error free but for what it will communicate, one day, in heaven. God, the Lord and Giver of Life in the Holy Spirit, is the primary author of Scripture, meaning divine truths await discovery, and, more subtly, will always await discovery. As a door of entry into the mystery of Christ and His Blessed Mother, Saint John Eudes tirelessly promoted a liturgical feast in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and what he termed the “Holy” Heart of Mary. Saint John's Sacred Heart devotion was more theological, and less anatomical, than the similar devotion advocated by his contemporary, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. Christ's heart, for Saint John, was emblematic of His interiority, His hiddenness. It was a symbol of the heart of all mankind encased in the chest of God. John's devotion to the Sacred Heart led, inevitably, to a very high ideal of the Catholic priest as a man after the heart of Christ, a would-be saint who acts in the person of the one high priest, Jesus Christ. This “French school” of theology and spirituality was fresh thinking in the seventeenth century and put a dagger in the heart of any conception of the priest as a Church bureaucrat who merely performs rituals, for a certain price, to dispense God's grace.John suffered grievous calumnies and attacks from many in the Church when he left the Oratory to start his own Congregation of secular priests. His promotion of a feast to the Sacred Heart also incurred enemies who misunderstand his theology. The Congregation of Jesus and Mary, commonly known as the Eudists, is still active in parish missions and in teaching in several countries, though France's historic anti-Catholicism removed them from many of their prior apostolates. There is presently an active effort in the Holy See, spearheaded by French priests and bishops, to have Saint John Eudes declared a Doctor of the Church.Saint John Eudes, your deep identification with the person, emotions, and heart of Jesus Christ inspired all who heard and knew you. May your tireless pastoral efforts, life of prayer, preaching, and writing give powerful example to all priests, whose sacramental dignity you championed.
ST. JOHN EUDES l PATRONAGE OF EUDISTS, ORDER OF OUR LADY OF CHARITY, DIOCESE OF BAIE-COMEAU MISSIONARIES Feast Day: AUGUST 19 Our saint for today is not very popular as many others, but he was the one who compiled the Mass and the Divine Office of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Masses he compiled were both celebrated during his lifetime. He dedicated himself to the promotion of both Masses and wrote many prayers and elucidations about the Two Hearts. He taught that there is a mystical union of the Two Hearts with Jesus as the center. Friends, please welcome St. John Eudes, a French Catholic priest, confessor and prolific writer, founder of the Order of Our Lady of Charity and the Eudists. John was born on November 14, 1601 to Isaac Eudes and Martha Corbin. He made his first communion at age 13 and the following year took a private vow to remain chaste. Eudes studied under the Jesuits, then joined the Oratorians on March 25, 1632. He was ordained to the subdiaconate on December 21, 1624, and was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1625. He celebrated his first Mass on Christmas day. A few weeks after his ordination, he was taken ill and remained bedridden until 1626. When he regained health, he was sent to Aubervilliers for his theological studies. During the severe plagues in 1627 and in 1631, with the permission of his Oratorian superiors, he volunteered to care for the sick in his diocese. He administered the last sacraments to those infected and ensured proper burial for those who died. To avoid infecting his colleagues, he quarantined himself in a big cask in the middle of a field. In 1633 he began parish preaching missions in IIIe-de-France, Burgundy, Paris, Versailles and Brittany. He was called “the prodigy of his age” by a famous writer. His mission often lasted several weeks or months, evangelizing and hearing confessions. He was concerned about the spiritual life of the priests and seminarians. He also founded several seminaries dedicated to the devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In 1674, he received six papal bulls of indulgences from Pope Clement X for the confraternities and seminaries he established. When he observed in his mission that the prostitutes who wanted to leave their way of life, but were not given shelter and care, he founded in Caen in 1641 the Order of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge, a congregation caring for former prostitutes. It later included a convent from which the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd was established in 1829. With the help of Cardinal Armand Richelieu and a number of bishops he left the Oratorian Order and on March 25, 1643 he founded the Eudists for the education of priests and for parish missions. He also established a Third Order whose members included Amelie Fristel and Jeanne Jugan. Jeanne Jugan, L.S.P., also known as Sr. Mary of the Cross, later founded the Little Sisters of the Poor, a congregation dedicated to caring for the elderly poor. Sr. Jeanne was canonized on October 11, 2009. St. John Eudes died at Caen, on August 19, 1680. In 1903, Pope Leo XIII, in proclaiming Eudes' heroic virtues gave him the title “Author of the Liturgical Worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Heart of Mary.” The feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was first celebrated on February 8, 1648 and that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on October 20, 1672. Eudes was canonized on May 21, 1925. His feast day is August 19. St. John Eudes, we pray you, help us to love the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Do I cherish the First Friday and First Saturday devotions or am I lazy to involve myself?
In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Holly Garman on her book The Holy Heart (June 30, 2022)“My Father will love you so deeply that We willcome to you and make you Our dwelling place.”~ Jesus (Jn. 14:32, TPT)The Scriptural truths of The Holy Heart help us to let God become fully at home in us, as we become fully at home in Him. When that depth of union is reached, circumstances and conditions will no longer matter. They will simply be details that are experienced from a deep place of rest, which nothing can affect.Home is more than a place; it is a Person.https://enroutebooksandmedia.com/theholyheart/

Paul wanted his readers to be ready for the return of Jesus. This involved them being holy. So, he asked God to do two things for them so they would become holy and ready for Jesus' return.
Introduction Holiness—spiritual reorientation; reoriented towards things of God. As we work out our fear and trembling, God works within us (Phil. 2:12-13). Partnership in holiness; can’t occur without intentional action on our part. Part of this intentional efforts towards holiness is what scripture refers to as “renewing your mind” (Rom. 12:1-2; Eph. 4:22). That is, make your mind new/fresh. Notice the connection, in both verses, to proper conduct (holiness). Particularly within Eph. 4: put off old conduct so that you
