Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 12ú lá de mí Bealtaine, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1978 tháinig nuacht amach nach raibh in ainm a bheith amach chuig an phobail ón rialtas faoi chás á fhiosrú ag na Gardaí. I 2000 bhí an Bank of Ireland ag pleanáil chun 40 áis a dhúnadh ach ní dúirt siad aon rud faoi aon phost. I 1998 stop cluiche I gcoinne Durlas agus Knock de bharr gur bhuail duine réiteoir Michael Webster de bharr gur chuir sé imreoir as an bpáirc. I 2005 tháinig an nuacht amach go raibh The Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary ag aistarraingt óna seirbhís do na daoine le míchumas intleachta ag St Anne's I Ros Cré. Bhí an áis ag soláthair cúram cónaithe agus seirbhís I rith an lae I Ros Cré agus na baile timpeall air. Ag an am bhí 125 áit do chúram cónaithe, 4 áit faoiseamh agus 131 áit do sheirbhís I rith an lae. Sin Britney Spears le Oops! I Did It Again – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2000. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1968 bhí Brian Jones le The Rolling Stones don uair dheireanach nuair a chan siad ag ceolchoirm New Musical Express Poll Winners sa Bhreatain. Bháigh é nuair a bhí drugaí agus alcól ina chóras nuair a chuaigh sé I gcóir snámh I mí Iúil 1969. Fuair sé bás ag aois 27. I 2000 ghoid daoine na geataí den Strawberry Fields sainchomhartha ó amhrán ó The Beatles. Fuair siad na geataí ag mangaire dramh-mhiotal sa Learpholl cúpla lá tar éis. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh Tony Hawk I Meiriceá I 1968 agus rugadh aisteoir Rami Malek I Meiriceá ar an lá seo I 1981 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 12th of May, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1978: Leakage of highly confidential Government papers were to lead to a major garda investigation. 2000: Bank of Ireland was planning to close up 40 branches but was not saying what this wouldve meant in terms of jobs. 1998 - A junior hurling league game between Thurles Fennelly's and Knock was abandoned after Referee Michael Webster was struck as he sent off a player.  2005 - The Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary would withdraw from the provision of services to persons with intellectual disability at St Anne's, Roscrea. The headquarters of the service, known as St Anne's Service, provides residential and day services in Roscrea and the neighboring towns. St. Anne's service provides 125 residential places, 4 respite places, and 131 day places.  That was Britney Spears with Oops! I Did It Again – the biggest song on this day in 2000. Onto music news on this day In 1968 Brian Jones made his final live appearance with The Rolling Stones when they appeared at the New Musical Express Poll Winners Concert at the Empire Pool, Wembley, England. Jones drowned while under the influence of drugs and alcohol after taking a midnight swim in his pool, on 3rd July 1969 aged 27. 2000 Thieves stole the gates to Strawberry Fields the Merseyside landmark immortalised by The Beatles song. The 10' high iron gates were later found at local scrap metal dealers in Liverpool. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – Tony Hawk was born in America in 1968 and actor Rami Malek was born in America on this day in 1981 and this is some of the stuff he has done I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.

By the time he died at the age of 49, people all over the world knew about this disease because of him. They knew that human compassion could soften the ravages of this disease. Forced to quit school at age 13 to work on the family farm, Joseph entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary six years later, taking the name of a fourth-century physician and martyr. When his brother Pamphile, a priest in the same congregation, fell ill and was unable to go to the Hawaiian Islands as assigned, Damien quickly volunteered in his place. In May 1864, two months after arriving in his new mission, Damien was ordained a priest in Honolulu and assigned to the island of Hawaii. In 1873, he went to the Hawaiian government's leper colony on the island of Moloka'i, set up seven years earlier. Part of a team of four chaplains taking that assignment for three months each year, Damien soon volunteered to remain permanently, caring for the people's physical, medical, and spiritual needs. In time, he became their most effective advocate to obtain promised government support. Soon the settlement had new houses and a new church, school and orphanage. Morale improved considerably. A few years later, he succeeded in getting the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, led by Mother Marianne Cope, to help staff this colony in Kalaupapa. Damien contracted Hansen's disease and died of its complications. As requested, he was buried in Kalaupapa, but in 1936 the Belgian government succeeded in having his body moved to Belgium. Part of Damien's body was returned to his beloved Hawaiian brothers and sisters after his beatification in 1995. When Hawaii became a state in 1959, it selected Damien as one of its two representatives in the Statuary Hall at the US Capitol. Damien was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 11, 2009. Send us a textIn this episode we journey to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palm Desert to have a conversation with two young Catholics on fire with the faith. Genevieve Knight is a 28 year old cradle Catholic born and raised in Rancho Mirage, CA. Though she came from a Catholic background, it was not until the age of 21, while in her third year of college, she experienced a ‘simple, yet deeply profound' encounter with Christ which changed the trajectory of her spiritual life forever. Genevieve shares her story with This Connected not only as a young adult on fire for the Truth, beauty, and goodness of the Catholic faith, but as one who seeks to be a witness to every person searching for the story God is constantly writing upon his and her heart.Brian Ruberg is a 22-year old adult convert to Catholicism. Born on Rowlett, Texas and raised in La Quinta, California, Brian was brought up as a Non-denominational Protestant Christian but saw little value in his religion despite never abandoning it. After a search for meaning and purpose through various outlets such as philosophy and the straight-edge punk movement, he became involved in the online political scene where he met many like-minded young men, many of whom were Catholic. Already experiencing gradual growth in Christ, he became curious and fascinated with the Church and its reverence and tradition, attending his first mass in Latin. Over the next three years, he began to grow in the faith and fall in love with the sacraments, eventually becoming fully initiated into the Catholic faith on December 21st, 2024. Brian now works with his parish's Young Adults Fellowship and maintains many friendships within the Church community and continues to grow and help other incoming Catholics grow their faith.Remember to like, subscribe, and recommend to a friend. Author and broadcaster Chine McDonald has never seen a black representation of the Virgin Mary. Black Madonnas are statues or paintings of the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus, where both figures are depicted with dark skin. They can be found both in Catholic and Orthodox countries. There are thought to be at least 450 of them in the world and there are more Vierges Noires documented in France than any other country in the world. Chine visits the Queen of Peace in the convent church of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Paris, accompanied by expert guide Dr Christena Cleveland. She travels to Orleans to see the Black Madonna statue: Our Lady of Miracles in the Chapel Notre Dame des Miracles. And cultural historian and University of Oxford based author Prof Janina Ramirez explains current thinking about the origins and cultural significance of the Black Madonna.

35 Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands.
Sint lumbi vestri praecincti, et lucernae ardentes in manibus vestris, 36 And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.
et vos similes hominibus exspectantibus dominum suum quando revertatur a nuptiis : ut, cum venerit et pulsaverit, confestim aperiant ei. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them.
Beati servi illi quos, cum venerit dominus, invenerit vigilantes : amen dico vobis, quod praecinget se, et faciet illos discumbere, et transiens ministrabit illis. 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
Et si venerit in secunda vigilia, et si in tertia vigilia venerit, et ita invenerit, beati sunt servi illi. 39 But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open.
Hoc autem scitote, quoniam si sciret paterfamilias, qua hora fur veniret, vigilaret utique, et non sineret perfodi domum suam. 40 Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.
Et vos estote parati : quia qua hora non putatis, Filius hominis veniet.St John Eudes, born in Normandy, was educated by the Jesuits. Ordained Priest, he founded the Congregation of the Priests of Jesus and Mary, called Eudists, and the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity. In this introspective episode of "The Chris Abraham Show," Chris delves into a wide array of topics, offering personal anecdotes and candid observations. The episode opens with Chris discussing his ongoing efforts to declutter his apartment, an endeavor symbolic of his larger journey towards simplification and focusing on what truly matters, especially his unique relationship with bags as memory anchors due to his experience with aphantasia. He shares insights into his fitness routine and plans for upgrading his tech setup, possibly shifting to an iMac. Chris then pivots to a thoughtful commentary on global issues, expressing uncertainty about the outcomes of current events in Ukraine, the political climate, and high-profile cases. His perspective on social media, particularly the dynamics on platforms like Mastodon, highlights a societal shift towards seeking validation over engaging in challenging debates. Chris reminisces about his high school experiences, where he founded a debate team, drawing parallels between past debates and current online interactions. The episode concludes with Chris's reflections on the educational landscape in his past, touching upon various schools and their distinct characteristics. He emphasizes the trend of people preferring monologues over dialogues in public discourse, seeking applause rather than engaging in meaningful debates. This episode offers a rich tapestry of ideas, blending personal stories with broader societal observations, making it a compelling listen for those interested in introspective journeys and the nuances of human interaction in the digital age. Glossary of Terms: Aphantasia: A condition where one cannot voluntarily visualize imagery. Decluttering: The process of removing unnecessary items to simplify one's living space. Political Tea Leaf Reading: The act of trying to predict political outcomes or trends. Walking Treadmill Desk: A workstation combining a treadmill with a desk for walking while working. Saint Louis School: Saint Louis School, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a private, Roman Catholic college preparatory school for boys. It was founded in 1846 by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, making it one of the oldest schools in Hawaii. The school offers education from grades 6 through 12 and is known for its rich history and tradition. For someone like Chris Abraham, who attended Saint Louis School from 7th to 12th grade, the experience at such an institution would have played a significant role in shaping his formative years, providing a foundation in academics, values, and community engagement. This week on Vatican Insider, the interview segment is a repeat but it features a compelling storyteller and fascinating guest, Fr. Bill Petrie. At the time of our conversation, Fr. Bill, a priest of the Order of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SSCC), was pastor of St. Damien parish on the Hawaiian island of Molokai'i. We have been friends for a number of years and usually met at Kalaupapa on Molokai'i to talk about Sts. Damien, SSCC, and Marianne Cope and their work there with victims of leprosy. For this interview, we met at the home of some mutual friends in Honolulu on the island of Oahu to talk about his 25 years of work with St. Mother Teresa! 25 years! Tons of insight and remarkable stories about this holy woman, whose feast day we celebrated recently.I cannot find my photo of our Honolulu encounter but there was a rainbow over Fr. Bill's head as we finished our talk! Fr. Bill now lives on Oahu. I have been focusing on St. Teresa recently, as you know from last week's interview segment when my guests were the producer and stars of the film, “Mother Teresa and Me.” The film will be released by Fathom Events in select U.S. theaters for one night only on Oct. 5. Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Fifth Week of Easter Lectionary: 287   The Saint of the day is Saint Damien de Veuster of MolokaiSaint Damien de Veuster of Moloka'i's Story When Joseph de Veuster was born in Tremelo, Belgium, in 1840, few people in Europe had any firsthand knowledge of leprosy, Hansen's disease. Reflection Some people thought Damien was a hero for going to Moloka'i and others thought he was crazy. When a Protestant clergyman wrote that Damien was guilty of immoral behavior, Robert Louis Stevenson vigorously defended him in an “Open Letter to Dr. Hyde.” Love the saints? May 10: Saint Damien de Veuster of Moloka'i, Priest (U.S.A.) 1840–1889 Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: White Patron Saint of those suffering leprosy A joyful celibate brings hope and dignity to the walking dead It is often just one decision that releases the bolt, opening the door to a new life. The first step down a new road of a thousand smaller steps begins with one choice—to board the ship or to stand on the dock, to accept the marriage proposal or to wait for another, to sign the document or to leave it blank. Without that first choice, a different life would have been lived. Everyone, at some point, stands at this crossroad. But an impulse must be obeyed or rejected for untold other events, decisions, and influences to begin to unwind. This is one of the mysteries of life, how so much depends on one brief moment. Young Jozef De Veuster (Damien was his religious name), growing up in a large family in rural Belgium, could never have imagined where and how his life would end. He was most likely going to follow the path of most other young men of his time and place—get married, have a family, go to Mass on Sunday, and take over the family farm. But an older brother was a priest, and two sisters were nuns, so a religious vocation was always a possibility. Damien eventually responded to the Lord's call and his own impulse toward religious life and entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, just as his brother did before him. But just as his brother, Father Pamphile, was slated to leave for Hawaiʻi as a missionary, he had to abandon his voyage for health reasons. And thus a decision had to be made. A pivot point had arrived. Was Damien to replace his brother and go to Hawaiʻi or not? Leave family forever or stay home? Be a foreign missionary or stay among his own? Brother Damien walked the long plank upward and boarded the ship. He arrived in Honolulu in March 1864 and was ordained a priest in May. He would live his entire priestly life in Hawaiʻi. He never left the Hawaiʻian islands again. Father Damien served in parishes for several years, learning to love his parishioners and being loved by them in return. Then, in 1873, the bishop asked for volunteers to go to an isolated leper colony on the island of Moloka'i. Father Damien volunteered. For the next sixteen years, he dedicated himself without reserve to this exiled community. He carried out more than a “ministry of accompaniment.” He accompanied, yes, but he also led, taught, inspired, and died to self. Father Damien's robust health and farm background made hard work natural. He enlarged a chapel and built a rectory, a road, a dock, and numerous cottages for the lepers. He showed the people how to farm, to raise cattle, and to sing (despite his diseased vocal cords), and to play instruments (despite his missing fingers). He was a vital force walking in a living graveyard. Life on an isolated leper colony was psychologically difficult for everyone, even the priest. But Father Damien brought faith and human dignity to a depressed population alienated from family and society. He treated the sick and the dying—and everyone was sick and dying—with the dignity of children of God. A proper cemetery was organized, funeral Masses were said with the accompaniment of a choir, and solemn processions bore everyone to their final resting place. This was a far cry from the inhuman chaos that preceded his arrival. Father Damien carried out all of his pastoral work with fatherly concern. He was there, after all, because he was a celibate priest. No married Protestant minister would have dared to place himself, his wife, and his children in such a dangerous situation, and none ever did. Like all good fathers, Father Damien was both joyful and demanding. He was open. He smiled. He cared. He scolded. His source of strength was not merely his solid foundation in human virtue but primarily his Catholic faith. Father Damien's love for the Mass, the Holy Eucharist, and the Virgin Mary deepened through the years. His greatest non-physical sufferings were the lack of a priest companion with whom he could converse and to whom he could confess his sins. Father Damien contracted leprosy after eleven years in the colony. He personally never wrote to his mother with the news. But when the old widow in Belgium learned of her son's illness, she died of a broken heart. Father Damien lived five years with leprosy, continuing his priestly work, and died in 1889 at the age of forty-nine. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 after two medical miracles were attributed to his divine intervention. Saint Damien of Moloka'i, intercede on behalf of all fathers to make them ever more generous in serving without reserve the families they head, making your life not only a source of inspiration, but also of emulation, to all who know of your heroic generosity.

As you may already know, the Vatican websites have been up and down for several days, and are down, in fact, as I write this column. vaticannews.va is down but vatican.va is up, although the English language site has not been updated since November 30. A Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, said Wednesday that the Holy See had taken down its main vatican.va website amid an apparent attempt to hack the site. Without expanding on what caused the problem, he said, “Technical investigations are ongoing due to abnormal attempts to access the site.” Numerous users online, in fact, noted that the site was unavailable as of Tuesday morning. The sites have been up and down since Wednesday afternoon, with many attempts producing “404” error messages. The link you see below has nothing to do with what I normally bring you daily in this column but the World Cup is on, and it's hard to ignore stories related to this global event that, every four years, mesmerizes most of the world's population for a month! I saw a story today that I found to be very interesting – all about the traditional Arab headgear that is taking the games by storm. It quotes one Swiss fan as saying he has “been surprised by how indulgent Qataris — and others from across North Africa and the Middle East — have been when it comes to foreigners adopting and appropriating local customs and clothing, something that is generally seen as disrespectful in Europe and North America.” Being an American who lives in Europe, it was that soccer fan's statement that drew my attention. I think you'll enjoy this piece and perhaps even learn something new. It's the World Cup's Hot Accessory. But Should Fans Wear It? – The New York Times (nytimes.com) VATICAN INSIDER: SERVANT OF GOD JOSEPH DUTTON: HAWAII'S THIRD SAINT? This week, in what is normally the interview segment, I've prepared a Special Report on Joseph Dutton. The past two weeks, you heard Fr. John Paul Kimes of Notre Dame University, which has a large archive on Dutton, speak about this Servant of God, and I take another look at Dutton's life this weekend. This layman, born in Stowe, Vermont, came to the island of Molokai at the age of 44 and then for 44 years worked alongside Sts. Damien and Marianne Cope caring for the victims of leprosy who had been exiled to live here by the King of Hawaii. As you know I am an official member of the Historical Commission for Dutton's cause for canonization and have been doing research here in Rome in the archives of the SSCC Fathers, priests of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the Order to which St. Damien and all his successor on Kalaupapa have belonged. The Dutton Guild ordered holy cards with a third class relic to be made in Rome. As you can see, if you ask for and receive a favor or miracle through the intercession of Servant of God Joseph Dutton, please write to The Joseph Dutton Guild, P.O. Box 3344, Honolulu, Hawaii 96801 (USA) Formerly known as the Sandwich Islands, the name was changed to Hawaiian Islands in 1840. It was a kingdom under Hawaiian rulers for just over 80 years, starting in 1810. Hawaii became a U.S. State in 1959. Hawaii now has two saints. Will she soon have a third in Joseph Dutton?

The property destruction led to national outcry and support for a Catholic school celebrating its 100th year this fall. Saint Anthony's principal of 12 years, Michael Thomasian, believes the incident was a hate crime targeted at the school's Catholic witness. The school serves grades Pre-K-8 in the Brookland neighborhood. The incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department said, in which 32-year-old Demitrius Hansford of Northeast Washington vandalized the school's Saint Anthony of Padua statue, stole $1,400 in cash, and trampled areas on the property in two incidents, on August 10 and August 15. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252067/man-arrested-for-burglary-property-destruction-at-catholic-school-in-dc Bishop Joseph Brennan of Fresno joined the United Farm Workers last week for a portion of the union's march through California's Central Valley to support a union voting rights bill. The more than 300-mile march from Delano to Sacramento is in support of Assembly Bill 2183, the Agricultural Labor Relations Voting Choice Act. The bill would allow farmworkers to use mail-in ballots for union elections. The march passed through Fresno August 11. Bishop Brennan, along with his predecessor, Bishop Armando Ochoa, joined the march at Saint Anthony Mary Claret Church, and then spoke at a rally at Calwa Recreation & Park District, where Bishop Brennan also gave a blessing to the marchers. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252068/fresno-bishop-joins-march-for-farmworkers-union-voting-rights-bill Today, the Church celebrates Saint John Eudes, a French missionary and the founder of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity, who was also the author of the liturgical worship of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. ST. JOHN EUDES l PATRONAGE OF EUDISTS, ORDER OF OUR LADY OF CHARITY, DIOCESE OF BAIE-COMEAU MISSIONARIES Feast Day: AUGUST 19 Our saint for today is not very popular as many others, but he was the one who compiled the Mass and the Divine Office of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Masses he compiled were both celebrated during his lifetime. He dedicated himself to the promotion of both Masses and wrote many prayers and elucidations about the Two Hearts. He taught that there is a mystical union of the Two Hearts with Jesus as the center. Friends, please welcome St. John Eudes, a French Catholic priest, confessor and prolific writer, founder of the Order of Our Lady of Charity and the Eudists. John was born on November 14, 1601 to Isaac Eudes and Martha Corbin. He made his first communion at age 13 and the following year took a private vow to remain chaste. Eudes studied under the Jesuits, then joined the Oratorians on March 25, 1632. He was ordained to the subdiaconate on December 21, 1624, and was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1625. He celebrated his first Mass on Christmas day. A few weeks after his ordination, he was taken ill and remained bedridden until 1626. When he regained health, he was sent to Aubervilliers for his theological studies. During the severe plagues in 1627 and in 1631, with the permission of his Oratorian superiors, he volunteered to care for the sick in his diocese. He administered the last sacraments to those infected and ensured proper burial for those who died. To avoid infecting his colleagues, he quarantined himself in a big cask in the middle of a field. In 1633 he began parish preaching missions in IIIe-de-France, Burgundy, Paris, Versailles and Brittany. He was called “the prodigy of his age” by a famous writer. His mission often lasted several weeks or months, evangelizing and hearing confessions. He was concerned about the spiritual life of the priests and seminarians. He also founded several seminaries dedicated to the devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In 1674, he received six papal bulls of indulgences from Pope Clement X for the confraternities and seminaries he established. When he observed in his mission that the prostitutes who wanted to leave their way of life, but were not given shelter and care, he founded in Caen in 1641 the Order of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge, a congregation caring for former prostitutes. It later included a convent from which the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd was established in 1829. With the help of Cardinal Armand Richelieu and a number of bishops he left the Oratorian Order and on March 25, 1643 he founded the Eudists for the education of priests and for parish missions. He also established a Third Order whose members included Amelie Fristel and Jeanne Jugan. Jeanne Jugan, L.S.P., also known as Sr. Mary of the Cross, later founded the Little Sisters of the Poor, a congregation dedicated to caring for the elderly poor. Sr. Jeanne was canonized on October 11, 2009. St. John Eudes died at Caen, on August 19, 1680. In 1903, Pope Leo XIII, in proclaiming Eudes' heroic virtues gave him the title “Author of the Liturgical Worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Heart of Mary.” The feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was first celebrated on February 8, 1648 and that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on October 20, 1672. Eudes was canonized on May 21, 1925. His feast day is August 19. St. John Eudes, we pray you, help us to love the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Do I cherish the First Friday and First Saturday devotions or am I lazy to involve myself?

Matthew 12:46-50: While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.” But he said in reply to the one who told him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Picture now the Lord stretching out his arms in a gesture of inclusion, as though he were embracing everyone in the family, as part of that covenant, as though he were saying that his followers are part of an intimate family, and can really feel at home, feel welcomed, feel together. The people of Israel too felt themselves to be part of a family. There were foreigners, outsiders, but also those of our family. A chosen people, the apple of God's eye.But now the Lord extends that inclusion in the family, by referring to God's will, not to blood, not to the people of Israel.“For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Music: Una rosa me diste, by the Choir of the Roman College of Holy Mary in Rome. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Fourth Week of Easter Lectionary: 280All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint Damien de Veuster of MolokaiWhen Joseph de Veuster was born in Tremelo, Belgium, in 1840, few people in Europe had any firsthand knowledge of leprosy, Hansen's disease. May 10: Saint Damien de Veuster of Moloka'i, Priest (U.S.A.)1840–1889Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: WhitePatron Saint of those suffering leprosyA joyful celibate brings hope and dignity to the walking deadIt is often just one decision that releases the bolt, opening the door to a new life. This is one of the mysteries of life, how so much depends on one brief moment.Young Jozef De Veuster (Damien was his religious name), growing up in a large family in rural Belgium, could never have imagined where and how his life would end. He never left the Hawaiʻian islands again.Father Damien served in parishes for several years, learning to love his parishioners and being loved by them in return. This was a far cry from the inhuman chaos that preceded his arrival.Father Damien carried out all of his pastoral work with fatherly concern. His greatest non-physical sufferings were the lack of a priest companion with whom he could converse and to whom he could confess his sins.Father Damien contracted leprosy after eleven years in the colony. He personally never wrote to his mother with the news. But when the old widow in Belgium learned of her son's illness, she died of a broken heart. Father Damien lived five years with leprosy, continuing his priestly work, and died in 1889 at the age of forty-nine. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 after two medical miracles were attributed to his divine intervention.Saint Damien of Moloka'i, intercede on behalf of all fathers to make them ever more generous in serving without reserve the families they head, making your life not only a source of inspiration, but also of emulation, to all who know of your heroic generosity.

A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - The bishop of Gallup, New Mexico has said that COVID-19 vaccines can be taken by Catholics with a clear conscience. He said the state ought not universally mandate the vaccine, without allowing for conscientious objection. The bishop made his comments in a letter released Wednesday. Some Catholics have raised concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine's remote connection to aborted fetal tissue. Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of a Brazilian bishop, days after a sexually explicit video of the bishop was shared on the internet. The 60-year-old bishop led a diocese north of the city of São Paulo from 2012 until this week. The bishop has been investigated multiple times by the Vatican for alleged sexual misconduct, or for covering up sexual misconduct. A man has been arrested and charged in connection to a fire at a Catholic church in Glasgow last month. The fire destroyed the 163-year-old church, which was considered to be the spiritual home to Glasgow's Polish community. The 24-year-old man has been charged with deliberately starting a fire, with the intention of damaging property. Today is the feast of the French missionary, and founder of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity, Saint John Eudes. John is remembered for his devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Heart of Mary. He wrote the first book ever on the devotions to the Sacred Hearts.

“I've been so busy now writing letters — or helping people to write letters — for religious exemption or for medical exemption, since I kind of have both avenues to go with, because there are a lot of people who don't want to get vaccinated with COVID-19 for medical reasons, and many of which for the spiritual or moral reason," said Sister Deirdre Byrne, who is also a medical doctor. She was recently featured in a LifeSiteNews article, headlined, "'We have lost all common sense and as a result we are losing our religious freedom,' Sister Dede Byrne warns." Sacred Hearts last week, I spoke with Father Delaney, they serviced over 2,000 people. So, they really need our help. They need canned goods, rice, cereal, beans, diapers. If people don't want to out to the store, you can make a monetary donation. We'll accept checks or cash. It will all go right to the Salvation Army and Sacred Hearts Church,” she said.Corr is also a member of the Crescent Yacht Club—and those members have been conducting food drives too.“The Crescent Yacht Club did it a couple of weeks ago. Then, they brought the food over. The pantry was empty. The shelves were completely empty so many people came by and donated. We were able to fill it up, but then that week…it gets emptied again.” Corr added.Along with the Haverhill Exchange Club, those helping with Saturday's Food Drive are the Haverhill Breakfast Exchange Club, Haverhill Lion's Club, Haverhill Rotary Club, Haverhill Kiwanis Club and Pentucket Kiwanis Club. Donations will be accepted Saturday from noon- 2 p.m. at the Sacred Hearts Parish parking lot, 165 S. Main St., in Haverhill, and at the Salvation Army, 395 Main St., Haverhill. Checks may be made out to the Salvation Army or Sacred Hearts Parish with “food pantry” written on the memo line.Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)

He was educated at the college of Braine-le-Comte, and in 1858 he joined the Society of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary at Leuven, Belgium. In 1863, Fr. Damien went as a missionary to the Hawaiian Islands. Moved by the miserable condition of the lepers whom the Hawaiian government had deported to the island of Molokai, he volunteered to take charge of the settlement. Fr. Damien served as both pastor and physician to the colony and undertook many projects to better the conditions there. He improved water and food supplies and housing and founded two orphanages. After sixteen years in the colony, Fr. Damien succumbed to leprosy on April 15, 1889 at the age of 49. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.

The What Makes This Place Great Podcast

WOW - where do I even begin with Paris. It was my first time here, and it's a city that I've purposely tried to avoid going to because of the over-tourism, crowds, it's expensive, etc. I definitely had to give it a chance at some point, and this trip presented the perfect opportunity. I spent 7 days total in Paris which wasn't nearly enough time to cover everything...it's just so insanely big with so many beautiful places to see. I'm from a rather large city, but I was definitely overwhelmed with the size and the crowds in Paris. It was still incredible in every way though. I met up with my friend Sarah from Germany for the first 3 or 4 days in the city, and then covered the rest alone for the remaining days. To sum it up, I hit the Picasso Museum, the Louvre, an exhibition at the Grand Palace, the D'Orsay Museum, the Architecture and Heritage Museum, the Basilica of Sacred Hearts and Montmartre, the top of the Arc de Triomphe at sunset and watched the Eiffel Tower light show from the top, the Eiffel Tower and surrounding grounds, Luxembourg Gardens, Tuileries Gardens, Buttes-Chaumont Park, Bastille, Saint Chappelle church, Notre Dame, the Palace of Versailles and the chateau, explored Marais, Babylon, Vaugirard, Belleville and ate at some amazing restaurants all over the place. I think I covered it all! Though Paris is known to be over-crowded with tourists, Parisians come off a bit unfriendly, and it's expensive, I really loved being here and exploring this amazing city. It has so much to offer in terms of art, architecture, history, music, night life, the list goes on. There is really something for everyone here.  This city also made me realize how difficult it is to interview people for this show sometimes. Having true locals of a new city on this podcast probably means that they don't speak much English, or rather, I don't speak the language of their country. It was challenging trying to find people for this episode because Parisians are notorious for disliking English, but I did manage to interview Beatriz, a photographer and painter from Spain. She and her husband own the Aux Arts Etc. Cafe by Notre Dame and Paris is essentially her playground as far as photography goes. She has lived all over the world, but Paris kept pulling her in which is why they have now settled there. Beatriz gave me great perspective into what makes Paris beautiful in her eyes, and I hope it comes through here...enjoy!

Summary of today's show: On our regular Thursday show, Scot Landry, Susan Abbott, Fr. Roger Landry, and Antonio Enrique consider the news headlines of the week, including last weekend's performance of Kiko Arguello's symphonic homage “The Suffering of the Innocents” in Boston; CatholicTV's Gabriel Award; Massachusetts as the most Catholic state; a parish's mortgage burning to honor a former pastor; youth ministry awards; priest assignments; and safeguarding the Catholic identity of colleges. Listen to the show: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Susan Abbott Today's guest(s): Fr. Roger Landry, executive editor of The Anchor, the newspaper of the Fall River diocese; and Antonio Enrique, editor of The Pilot, the newspaper of the Boston archdiocese Links from today's show: Some of the stories discussed on this show will be available on The Pilot's and The Anchor's websites on Friday morning. Please check those sites for the latest links. Today's topics: Catholic symphony; CatholicTV; most Catholic state; mortgage-burning; youth ministry awards; Catholic identity 1st segment: Scot and Susan discussed the religious education office's Mass and graduation ceremony for the Spanish-language two-year leadership program for parish volunteers, which will occur tonight. Everyone involved volunteers in their parish and they meet every Saturday for two years from 1-5pm. They will go back to their parishes with solid foundation in theology and skills in catechetics, hospital ministry, youth ministry, and more. Scot said the Catholic Media secretariat is also working with the Hispanic Apostolate on helping them with more Spanish-language radio programming. Susan said Cardinal Seán will participate in the graduation tonight. Scot said Susan, Antonio and himself were present on Sunday for the symphony of the “Suffering of the Innocents” composed by Kiko Arguello. Antonio was one of the organizers and more than 2,000 people attended. The vast majority were Catholics, but there were also representatives of the Jewish community were present. Scot said he was moved by quotes from members of the Jewish community. “I had tears in my eyes when everyone sang the Shema,” said Robert Liekind, director of the American Jewish Committee. “It was immensely moving. The sense of our common heritage, our common roots, really came out.” “This couldn't have been possible 50 years ago,” added Rabbi Barry Starr from Temple Israel in Sharon. “We have made a lot of strides on the path of reconciliation, and I am truly grateful that I was here to witness to this.” “This has been moving and touching to my heart,” Rabbi Starr added. Marybeth Bisson, parishioner at Most Precious Blood Parish of Dover, also said she also was moved by the symphony. “We have been to a lot of symphonies,” Bisson said. “This was everything they said it was going to be and more. Absolutely phenomenal.” Scot heard that from many others who were present. Scot said he had high expectations and those expectations were surpassed. Antonio said the organizers were happy with how it went and Cardinal Seán was as well. He said some a Jewish rabbi told him they felt like part of the community and he felt loved. This contrasts with the old prejudices and animosities that existed at times and in some places between Christians and Jews. Antonio said these Jewish-Catholic relations are becoming more of a movement and not just theologians talking. The singing of the Shema Yisrael was a key part of that unity. They discussed how Mary is an icon of the suffering of Christ, helping us to enter into the suffering in our lives with our eye on Christ, seeing how she accepted the sword of suffering that would pierce her heart, as the prophet foretold. The wages of sin are death, as St. Paul says, and Christ takes the suffering upon himself to give us a new and different life. Mary is at the center of that renewal. Scot said a moving moment was when everyone in the audience chanted a prayer to Mary with the choir. Susan said just being in Symphony Hall was beautiful and then Cardinal Seán quoted Dostoevsky: “The prince says that the world will be saved by beauty!” She also said she was unsure what to expect from an artist who composes music, but it was so lovely. Fr. Roger Landry said Pope Benedict said the greatest evangelization force, the means by which to bring people to conversion, is the beauty of the art the Church has produced and the beauty of the saints. When God produces these great acts of beauty, it brings us to the Source of Beauty, which is God. Great symphonies, great cathedrals, great pieces of art help us to understand who we really are and become mirrors of the beauty of the Lord. When we look back to St. Thomas Aquinas, in addition to his 50 volumes of theology, he also produced some of our greatest Eucharistic hymsn we still sing today. He recognized that the beauty of God and our faith couldn't just be expressed in philosophical and theological prosaic sentences. They had to be expressed too in poetry and music. Antonio said CatholicTV was there and did many interviews and they also taped the whole catechetical experience. He expects them to have a special program. He said the plan is to put it online somewhere. There was also discussion of how it resonated with many how the very Brahmin Symphony Hall was the site of this Catholic and Jewish event. Also, regarding CatholicTV, they were awarded Television Station of the Year by the Gabriel Awards along with EWTN. This is the second time they were honored. It shows how the two national Catholic television networks are bringing people to God. Fr. Roger said in age when so many people watch TV and watch videos on the Internet that the Church take advantage of this new . He said both networks are doing high quality work with very good content. For many people who are homebound, this is their connection to the Church. Also, this week, a headline shows that the latest shows that Massachusetts has passed Rhode Island as the state with the highest percentage of Catholic population. Antonio said realistically it means that the Catholic population dropped a little slower than it did in Rhode Island. Antonio and Susan agreed that it might be due to the number of Catholic immigrants coming into MAssachusetts versus Rhode Island. In Massachusetts, the Catholic population is 44.9%, but what's really telling is that weekly Mass attendance is 1 out of 6 Catholics. We should not stop until we can raise that number much higher. Rhode Island's Catholic population has dropped by 14%. Fr. Roger said he agrees that the influx of immigrants is responsible and we have a greater responsibility because of our greater numbers. We have to help people who call themselves Catholics to respond to a renewal of their faith. To whom more is given, much is to be expected. Scot said Holy Family Parish in Duxbury honored their longtime former pastor with a mortgage burning ceremony. Msgr. William Glynn was pastor for more than 25 years before entering Senior Priest status a few yearsago. Susan said the article ends with a great quote: In the spirit of care for priests and the priesthood, he repeated a message he gave in his homily. He pointed to the need for young men to step up and serve in the priesthood, and called upon lay people to encourage vocations. “It has been a great life to have been a priest. I regret that there are not more vocations,” he said. Scot said most parishes have some sort of a debt, but many leaders in Holy Family wanted to retire this mortgage as a way to honor Msgr. Glynn who had seen this parish built and worked had to put this parish in a great financial position. It's a testament of a connection by a parish family to their spiritual father for many years. Antonio said Catholicism is about community. Community meets and gathers around their pastors. Even in canon law that pastors are to meet and care for everyone in their parish, not just the Catholics. Antonio said he'd never heard of mortgage burning before so he wanted to make sure to cover the event in the Pilot. Scot said he was struck by how much Msgr. Glynn wanted to retire this debt on behalf of the parish. It highlights the pastor's role as both a spiritual leader, but also as a leader in the more mundane needs of life. Fr. Roger said the great pastors are those who want to provide for those entrusted to them. Msgr. Glynn didn't want to pass on debt to his successors. Most priests leaving a parish want to leave their house in order. But it's not just a gift to his successor but to his spiritual children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren. The people witness his commitment to them. Also in the Pilot this week was the annual awards banquet for Office for the New Evangelization of Youth and Young Adults, recognizing the great work being done by many people in many parishes. They honored 120 youth, young adults, and their leaders in ministry in 46 parishes throughout the Archdiocese. Antonio said everyone recognized were models of Catholic life. Susan said she was impressed by the ONE office's organization of the event. She said one of the awards was to Marge Costa, a teacher at Ursuline Academy, who taught Susan's daughters. Fr. Mike Harrington won an award and had a fan club of about 100 people. Deacon Jim Greer and his wife Terri won the Norm Plante Awards in honor of their work in youth ministry. Scot said the Fall River diocese also recognizes young people and those who minister to them. Fr. Roger said everyone recognizes that peer pressure among kids is a reality. These kinds of award ceremonies give positive peer pressure to lift up young people living their faith with great joy and even heroism as examples for them to follow. Fr. Roger likes to embarrass the award winners at the end of Mass by recognizing them in front of the whole community. Also in the Pilot was an announcement of five priest assignments. Fr. Shawn Carey, one of the few deaf priests in the US, has been named director of the Office of the Deaf Apostolate. Fr. Alonso Macias is leaving his three parishes in Roxbury and Jamaica Plain and is assigned to a growing Spanish-speaking community in Marlborough. Replacing him is Fr. Carlos Flor, who is moving from Immaculate Conception in Revere. Fr. Patrick McLaughlin will be leaving as administrator of St. Joseph in Medford and entering senior priest status. Fr. Bob Carr, pastor of St. Benedict in Somerville, will be accepting a new assignment soon as well. Scot said the Pilot also profiles Fr. John Delaney who's the new pastor of Sacred Hearts in Haverhill. Antonio said he comes to the parish with a wealth of experience in that area of the Archdiocese. Fr. Delaney was quoted as saying, “1 try to live my priesthood always keeping in mind the philosophy, ‘How can I help you to get closer to God?' My goal is to be a holy prayerful priest who is available to people to journey with them in life.” Scot said he's extremely well-respected for his work at St. Michael's in Andover, one of the largest in the Archdiocese. Susan said she was surprised to learn that Fr. Delaney has two Master's degrees, one in chemistry and another in environmental engineering. 2nd segment: Scot said this week's editorial in the Anchor talks about genuine Catholic colleges and universities. It's been in the news lately with the decision of Anna Maria College outside of Worcester rescinding a commencement invitation to Victoria Kennedy. Pope BEnedict also spoke on this to US bishops on their ad limina visits. Fr. Roger said Pope Benedict recognizes that Catholic education is key to spreading the Gospel. In college, it's where many young people are beginning to choose the trajectory of their life. This means that there needs to be an authentic Catholic culture, not just a religion class and a chapel on campus. Unfortunately, many young people leave Catholic colleges having lost their faith. He noted that Vicki Kennedy has made public statements in support of abortion and same-sex marriage and so inviting her to get an honorary degree and give her a platform to speak to the students would be difficult. In the editorial, Fr. Roger writes: If Yeshiva University invited Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for a debate and discussion, it might even be a sign of magnanimity, peacemaking and institutional self-confidence. But if Yeshiva were to ask him to speak to the graduates at commencement and give him an honorary degree, everyone would wonder whether it had lost its identity, not to mention marbles. … There's a reason why Howard University never invited — and never would have considered inviting — Strom Thurmond for an honorary doctorate. Even if in all other parts of his life he were a consummate gentleman, even if he had done many other things for many other people through public service, he would still not be invited because of the strident support of racism in his political ascent. Catholic institutions of higher learning should have as high standards with regard to potential honorees' positions on abortion and marriage and other fundamental issues of the Catholic faith as historically black institutions have had with regard to racism. Fr. Roger said God bless Bishop McManus for recognizing this action would call into question Anna Maria College's commitment to their Catholic identity. Bishop McManus was disinvited to the commencement by the students, which is an indication of the culture at the college. The Catholic identity needs to be reinforced there. As Catholics we can't support the killing of babies in the womb or undermining the meaning of marriage. Catholic universities and colleges ought to be distinguished by preparing students not just for life but eternal life, not just for work but for mission, not just for LSATs, MCATs, and GREs but for the eschatological final exam. The choices that a Catholic college or university makes — selecting administrators and faculty members, allocating resources, determining admissions standards, and even choosing commencement speakers — should always be in harmony with the faith and reflect these genuinely Catholic priorities. Scot said it's a controversial issue only because the Church hasn't embraced the ideal we all should support Church teachings on life issues. Susan said the two examples Fr. Roger gave are good illustrations. It's not we don't invite people who disagree with us ever, but the context of the address is important. She noted the Pope aid young people have a right to hear the teaching of the Church. Antonio was happy to see the Pope say the key problem here is we need to witness to the faith, but we are in a moment where there is no absolute truth, but whatever we think is true is what's important. Susan noted we have to have a well-formed conscience. Scot said bishops have a job to do to ensure that any institution that has Catholic as part of its identity live up to the ideals of the faith and don't send out mixed messages.

Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor Today's guest(s): Domenico Bettinelli and Mother Olga Yaqob Today's topics: Our favorite saints; WQOM 1st anniversary Summary of today's show: Who is your favorite saint? On this All Saints' Day, Dom Bettinelli and Mother Olga join Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor to talk about some of their favorite saints, including a saint who died at the hands of the Nazis, a saint who was a mother and wife, saints who were young siblings, and a saint who was a college student who came from a wealthy and influential family. They also discussed the one year anniversary of WQOM in Boston, which began broadcasting with the Mass on Nov. 1, 2010. 1st segment: Scot welcomes Fr. Chris on All Saints Day. Today is also the one-year anniversary of WQOM in Boston. Fr. Chris said he was at Sacred Hearts in Malden at the Cheverus grammar school for the All Saints Day Mass. He went through some of the many saints that the kids are familiar and remind them that we're all called to holiness. Their pastor, Fr. Dan Hickey, has been the pastor there for 26 years. The Cheverus school is an urban school and is very multicultural. It is named for Boston's first bishop. Cheverus is also the name of the award given to lay leaders in the archdiocese by Cardinal Seán on the Feast of Christ the King. Fr. Chris said at the seminary the new tomb marker has been installed for Cardinal O'Connell after his grave was moved. He's sure that the cardinal will receive many new prayers now that he's located right next to the seminary instead of up on the hill and out of the way where he used to be. He was moved in mid-July and the marker has just been installed. Cardinal Seán will lead a formal service marking the move. 2nd segment: Scot welcomed Dom and Mother Olga to the show. Scot introduced a recording of Cardinal Seán's remarks during the inaugural Mass for WQOM last All Saints Day at Holy Cross Cathedral. Scot said it was a momentous day. It was appropriate that the first words on air were those of the Mass. Scot said he has heard form many people who tell him how much the station has become a part of their daily life. Fr. Chris said he hears from prisoners in the Massachusetts prison system who listen to WQOM for inspiration and catechesis. Mother Olga said she also heard from a number of people as she travels around the area who say they heard her on this show. A mom told her she sits in the car while doing errands waiting for the last few minutes of the show to finish to hear it all. Dom said he has heard from people who say that WQOM has been an integral part of their conversion to the Catholic faith. Scot sent his thanks to the people of the Station of the Cross network who started WQOM and 24-hour Catholic radio in Boston. 3rd segment: Mother Olga said many of her students at Boston University where she was a campus chaplain had a devotion to Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, especially young men. Scot asked Fr. Chris how many of the men entering seminary have devotions to Bl. Pier Giorgio. Fr. Chris said walking the corridors of the seminary, you see many photos of Bl. Pier Giorgio, as well as St. George and St. Michael. 4th segment: Scot said Mother Olga wanted to offer St. Rita of Cascia as an example for moms. She was a holy wife and holy mother. She had a difficult life with suffering, but she was faithful to the Lord and to her family. She was born in Italy in 1386. She had wanted to become a religious sister, but her parents arranged a marriage for her and she obeyed. It was a difficult marriage because her husband was not devout or faithful. He was violent and mistreated her. They had two boys and she was dedicated to them and taught them to respect their father, to love him and pray for him. She prayed for her husband's conversion everyday. At the end of his life, he was touched by her goodness and charity and had changed his heart. Unfortunately, he was murdered by enemies he had made. Her sons swore vengeance, but St. Rita prayed they would forgive them. After some time, the boys got sick and died. St. Rita approached the Augustinian order and entered the convent at age 36. She lived in the convent for 40 years. She is the patron saint of impossible cases. She was able to bring reconciliation between her husband's enemies and her husband's families. She canonized in 1900. Scot said many saints have difficult lives and people who are having difficulty in life can look to her. St. Rita's shrine in Lowell is dedicated to her and the shrine is known for miracles through her intercession. 5th segment: Mother Olga said St. Rita is depicted as having been pierced by a throne because she asked Christ if she could feel the suffering of just one thorn to console Christ in his suffering. Mother Olga also has saints for children in Blessed Jacinta and Francisco Marto of Fatima. She said one day she was teaching students at Boston University about various Marian apparitions. Some children talked about Our Lady of Fatima as their favorite apparition because Our Lady talked to children like them. They were two of the three shepherd children, 10 and 11 years old, at Fatima. They are the two youngest non-martyr blessed or saints in the Church. Mother Olga told a story of how Mother Teresa used to say that sainthood is a duty we should pursue so she never demurred when people called her a living saint. When the angel appeared to the children in 1917, he taught the children several prayers that we all continue to pray today. The children at the urging of the angel began to offer small sacrifices for others for the salvation of souls. Francisco, the day before he died, asked the parish priest to bring him his First Communion. After that, Jacinta died a few months later. If children can do that, how much more can we feel responsible for the conversion of souls and sinners? They died of the influenza epidemic. Scot said they never would have known the whole world would know their story, yet they woke each day asking how they could live each day to make it holy. Mother Olga said saints truly live the Gospel where it's no longer about me, but about God and his people. These two children teach us this example: they did it all for God and for our Lady. We are all responsible to be part of God's plan to spread his Gospel. Fr. Chris said to see these two children in their holiness is inspiring. Scot said Fr. Mark O'Connell in his homily at Mass today said when we look in the mirror and see ourselves in all our quirkiness, we see someone called to be a saint. Cardinal Seán said in last year's All Saints' Day Mass that we are all called to be saints, because to be a saint is to be truly human. Andreas Widmer, a friend of the show and frequent guest, called John Paul II one of the most human persons he ever met and someone who is truly real. Fr. Chris said saints come in all shapes and styles and colors and we can find someone who appeals to us and to whom we can pray for intercession at the wedding banquet of the Lamb of God in heaven. 6th segment: Scot said one of Fr. Chris' favorite saints is St. Maximilian Kolbe. The Franciscan church where Kolbe worked for many years is a little bronze marker that reads “Here would pray daily John Paul II” when he was a professor at the university. John Paul canonized him in 1982. He is the patron saint of prisoners, journalists, and people working in the pro-life movement. John Paul called him the patron of our difficult century. He was a missionary in Japan for a while, but he is most known for his work during World War II. He saved many Jews from the concentration camps, but he was himself sent to Auschwitz. In order to discourage prisoners from escaping, they would line up others and would choose one in 10 to kill. During one of these decimations, a father of 10 was pulled from the line and he cried out “My wife, my children.” Maximilian offered to take his place. As soon as he was placed in the starvation bunker, he started to sing hymns to Mary. He would not die, so the Nazis eventually injected him with acid to kill. At his canonization in 1982 in St. Peter's Square, the family of the man whose life he saved were present. Fr. Chris said Kolbe teaches us that if we seek holiness there is no better person to turn to than the Blessed Mother. We pray for her intercession now and at the hour of our death, whenever that will be. Kolbe also teaches us through his sacrifice how essential it is. most of us won't give the ultimate sacrifice as Kolbe did, but the way we sacrifice for our families, we sacrifice to care for the poor, we sacrifice to be with the Lord is an essential part of sanctity. His life is also a source of hope. When you visit Auschwitz and see the organized evil it represents, but visit his cell and see the candle burning brightly there, you realize that evil never wins ultimately. Scot said remembers when Kolbe stepped forward he said, “I am a Catholic priest. I will take his place.” He was a Catholic first, he believes in sacrificing for others. And as a priest, he learned to model his life on Christ, to be in persona Christi. There are times in our lives when we get a chance to sacrifice for us. We should think in our head: “I am a Catholic. Let me….” Mother Olga said the surest way to heaven is to turn to Mary, because no one knows or is as close to Jesus than her. All the great saints have a strong devotion to our Lady which led them closer to Jesus. The saints teach us faithfulness in that present moment and the greater reward waiting for us in heaven. St. Therese of Lisieux said we are called to live ordinary lives with extraordinary love. Scot said it's important we don't see the saints as just historical figures. It's important for parents to introduce them to our saints as heroes to model their lives on. If we don't, they will model their lives after some movie actor or musician or athlete. Fr. Chris is reminded of St. Paul who called us to finish the race. We are all on the race to heave. He said St. Theresa of Avila once prayed, “Lord, save me from those long-faced saints.” If we know Christ, there has got to be some joy in our life. Scot said as we introduce our selves and our kids to saints, we can look at the liturgical calendar and learn a little bit about saints online: NewAdvent.com, even Wikipedia.org.
