“It's not time wasted. There's no loss in discernment.” Fr. Craig Giera is joined by Fr. Salvatore Palazzolo, a canon lawyer for the Archdiocese of Detroit. Together they dive into Fr. Sal's vocation story. While studying mechanical engineering, Fr. Sal went through a conversion experience after moving home with his parents. The search for Truth brought Fr. Sal into the faithful practice of his faith, daily Mass, and studying the Church. After hearing the Lord in prayer, and a car accident, Fr. Sal entered seminary. (00:03) Fr. Craig Giera welcomes us to this episode of Men of the Hearts. With the episode's guest, Fr. Salvatore Palazzolo, they discuss the mystery of Christmas. Fr. Sal explains a few of his family's traditions surrounding Christmas. (8:01) Fr. Sal shares his vocation story: he grew up in a big Italian Catholic family, and always expected he would raise a big family and have a home that was hospitable for his extended family. He went to school at Kettering University for mechanical engineering. He felt “life was good” and he was doing well financially and otherwise, but he didn't feel satisfied. So, Fr. Sal transferred to Oakland University to be closer to home. Moving home provided him the opportunity to attend Mass with his family and he sensed that his faith was the answer to why he felt empty. (21:45) “I would say my reconversion happened through the transcendental of Truth.” Fr. Sal talks about his search for the truth about the Church, God, and the Catholic faith. Encountering the Catechism and searching for understanding brought Fr. Sal to the decision to make his Catholic faith his own. “The more I learned about my faith, the more my faith grew, and the more my love for God grew.” He started reading scripture, attending a young adult group, and going to daily Mass. The Catechism played a key role in his conversion. (27:01) A sign from God: Fr. Sal shares the impactful story of how a car accident changed his perspective on his faith and his life -- and his future. After a powerful experience of a call to the priesthood in prayer, Fr. Sal contacted the Vocation Director and attended a Come and See at the seminary. After visiting the seminary, Fr. Sal entered and following his studies, he was ordained a priest. (42:45) Canon Law: Fr. Sal shares about his important role in the Archdiocese of Detroit. He shares what canon law is, what it looks like to study it, and how he helps the Church in this position. “God is fulfilling a desire I always had, but in the way He always planned for me.” Fr. Craig shares, “Sometimes people think ‘if I join the priesthood, I'll lose everything of myself.' But really, I'll become who I'm supposed to be.” The episode closes with Fr. Sal sharing some advice to men discerning the priesthood: “Giving time to discerning your vocation is pleasing to God, because it puts the focus of your life on Him and your faith is going to grow… it's not time wasted. There's no loss in discernment.”

Our guest for this episode of Follow to Lead is Fr. Michael Zimmerman, who currently serves as assistant Vocation Director for the Archdiocese of Boston and adjunct Scripture Professor at St. John's Seminary. When the world went into lockdown with the pandemic in the Spring of 2020, Fr. Michael used that time to write 27 scripts for a series of vocation videos called Scivias. This video series serves as a guide for men discerning the priesthood. These videos make great resources for schools in their work of inviting young men to discern whether God may be calling them to Holy Orders.
"As a young father and a self-proclaimed 'radically assimilated immigrant,' Sohrab Ahmari realized that when it comes to shaping his young son's moral fiber, today's America comes up short." During this talk, journalist and author Sohrab Ahmari will share some of his ideas about the direness of the crisis we currently face and about the ways forward (which might actually require some looking back). Enjoy this conversation! About Our Speakers Sohrab Ahmari is a contributing editor of The American Conservative and a visiting fellow of the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life at Franciscan University. Previously, he spent nearly a decade at News Corp., as op-ed editor of the New York Post and as a columnist and editor with the Wall Street Journal opinion pages in New York and London. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Spectator, the Times Literary Supplement, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Dissent and America, among many others. His books include From Fire, by Water: My Journey to the Catholic Faith (Ignatius, 2019) and The Unbroken Thread: Discovering the Wisdom of Tradition in an Age of Chaos (Convergent/Random House, 2021). He has testified before the British Parliament and appears regularly on broadcast media on both sides of the Atlantic, including the BBC, Sky News, France 24, Deutsche Welle, EWTN and Fox News. Fr. Jonathan Raia was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He came to know Jesus Christ through his parents' faith, and he grew in relationship with the Lord through Catholic school and various opportunities for service and leadership. He was also inspired by the example of holiness he witnessed in the priests at his parish and began to consider the priesthood as a young boy. His four years as a student at the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with a B.A. in Plan II (Liberal Arts) and Spanish in 2002, were pivotal for his faith because of the friends he made at the University Catholic Center. The call to the priesthood grew stronger during his years at the UCC, and he entered seminary for the Diocese of Austin upon graduation. He was ordained a priest in 2009 and served for four years as parochial vicar at St. William Parish in Round Rock, then for a year as parochial vicar at St. Mary's Catholic Center at Texas A&M University, before beginning as Vocation Director for the Diocese of Austin in July 2014. Six years later, he was named Chaplain/Director of the University Catholic Center. Fr. Jonathan holds a Master's degree in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University, where he also received training in spiritual direction, a ministry that has been an important part of his priesthood. Ministry to college students has been a consistent source of joy for him, and he considers it an honor to return to his alma mater and to take on the mission of bringing Christ to the students of UT.

Michael Zimmerman was ordained to the priesthood in 2017 and currently serves as assistant Vocation Director for the Archdiocese of Boston and adjunct Scripture Professor at St. John's Seminary. With the heart of a teacher, Fr. Michael was inspired to create a systematic discernment program for young men drawing from the wisdom that he received as part of his own formation. During the pandemic lockdown in May 2020, Fr. Michael scripted 27 episodes which are now part of a video series called Scivias. Filmed in a way that captures many of Fr. Michael's own interests such as rock climbing, track and field, art, drawing, and of course the city of Boston, Fr. Michael hopes others can identify with his journey and recognize how pursuing God's plan for their lives will fulfill their greatest desires.

Happy National Vocations Awareness Week! To help raise awareness, I am so very pleased to share this week's Say Yes to Holiness 1 on 1 Conversation podcast episode that I had with Father Michael Zimmerman, Assistant Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Boston and adjunct Scripture Professor at St. John's Seminary. Our conversation revolved around responding to God's invitation to holiness, discerning one's vocation, discussion of Fr Michael's innovative use of YouTube to help provide accompaniment to those discerning, some simple things parents can do to make the home a place where discernment naturally occurs, and also some things NOT to say to someone discerning a religious vocation! Fr. Michael hopes others can identify with his journey and recognize how pursuing God's plan for their lives will fulfill their greatest desires. Throughout our conversation, Fr Michael shared his own story of discernment and the reality that every vocation has to begin with a relationship with Christ, which of course, led into a discussion of growing in holiness! I can't tell you how much I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Fr. Michael, and I pray you receive much hope, inspiration and encouragement as I did so you may continue doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to continue to deepen your relationship with Christ so you can embrace the fullness of your vocation. Vocation Director, Fr. Ryan O'Neill We believe in absolute truth, objective truth, and we reject relativism Truth is a person, and we know Him. Transcendentals: beauty, truth, goodness, and mercy Cathedral in Montreal The Church proposes the ways to goodness, and will guide us along the way. "Don't be surprised by evil; come rest in the shade." —Fr. Ryan O'Neill Parable of the Mustard Seed FOCUS—Curtis Martin (an example of the Mustard Seed) Augustine Institute—(Tim Gray) Seminary was failing miserably, and Archbishop Chaput revived it—Mustard Seed Archdiocese of Denver is only great when we embrace the mustard seed, because grace is at work within it. "'Do little things with great love.'—That is what makes the Archdiocese of Denver good."—Mother Teresa & Fr. Ryan O'Neill expounds on this idea. "'Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of His name.' Embrace the mustard seed." Rome converted—over a thousand year period—because they embraced the mustard seed. Pride Month: Love the sinner; hate the sin Orientation itself is not a sin; The actions that flow from it are sinful, which is why the Church can never agree with marriage for people with same sex attraction. We, as a Church, are OK with whatever orientation you struggle with. How do we love the sinner? "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me."—Matthew 25 "If you come to Jesus, you come to Jesus on his terms." Fr. James Martin is right about one thing: we need to love those with same sex attraction better. "Tolerance is when you allow evil for the hope of a good." "Jesus tolerates you every minute of every day, and all you do is sin. He is allowing you to do evil in the hope of a greater good."—Fr. Ryan O'Neill If we want our same-sex brothers and sisters to come to love Christ, we need to let go of whatever fences we have put up against chastity. We need to invite them to know Jesus, and then they convert. We call people of hetero- and homosexual attraction to the same method to know Christ. Every homosexual friend needs a heterosexual friend who does not promote the homosexual lifestyle; it can be very healing. "Start focusing on the people in our lives and the mustard seed grace that's available to each one of us, every day."—Fr. Ryan O'Neill

When talking about with people about the vocation to religious life, and specifically the Dominican Life, one of the recurring questions is what a day in the life of a Dominican Brother is like. So we took a camera into our Studium in Dublin to give a taste of what the day in the life of a student brother of the Dominican Order is like. Naturally the routine for the brothers who have completed their studies the day is slightly is different as they go about their own ministries. But the general structure, where communal prayers form the hinges of the day would be what constitutes the fundamental aspect of a day as a Dominican brother. Our Studium, the place where we do our theological formation, is located in St. Saviour's Priory, Dublin 1, Ireland. If you would like to know more about the vocation as a Dominican, contact the Vocation Director on vocations@dominicans.ie. Want to know what is happening in the Irish Province? All young men and women should be asking them what life God desires for me. Every person's meaning of life is to figure out what God desires of us to get to heaven. Scot the question just doesn't lead people to becoming priests or religious, but integrates into their daily lives to figure out what God wants us to do each day or at this moment. Fr. Dan said we shouldn't equate vocation with career. What we should ask is what mode of life is God calling us to lay down our life for him? Priesthood, married life, single life, religious life? 2nd segment: Scot said he knows some seminarians at St. John's Seminary who listen to the The Good Catholic and they hear many priests talking about their own lives as priests. Fr. Dan said the witness of good priests is invaluable and hearing from the priests how they came to hear the call from God to the priesthood is a beautiful part of The Good Catholic Life. Fr. Dan said a culture of vocations is a Catholic culture and having the Catholic faith on the radio builds that up. Scot said the Vocations office is planning discernment retreats from men under 40 and men over 40. He aid this weekend are two retreats. The first one is for men age 18-40 at Connors Family Retreat Center and St. John Seminary. It's in two locations because they didn't have enough space in the seminary. The cardinal gives three conferences on Saturday, there's a seminarian witness, small-group discussions, Mass, and Rosary. For men over 40, there's a retreat this weekend as well at Blessed John XXIII National Seminary. Go to for more information and to contact Fr. Dan.
