This is an episode to examine what Churchill really did for the West after witnessing the emotional & ahistorical outbursts by the usual suspects after Darryl Cooper from the Martyrmade Podcast appeared on Tucker Carlson on 2 SEP 2024. I am simply addressing the claims of Churchill By Cooper as "the chief villain" which I think was hyperbolic (Cooper accedes to this) because I think Churchill was one of many villains during WWII. I am a reluctant Anglophile and I think historical revisionism is a healthy reaction to triumphalist historiography in the West that has made questioning accepted narratives a scholar crime. Listen to the interview yourself before arriving at any conclusions. Erica is also a sought-after psychological consultant, bringing her expertise to clinics, schools, and corporations like Goldman Sachs.Erica has written two highly influential books on parenting and is a media mainstay, appearing on CBS, ABC, FOX, and contributing to top publications like the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. She's also a Contributing Editor at the Institute for Family Studies.I asked Erica on because I was enamoured by her points of view on parenting. They seemed to stem from a place of common sense in what can be a confusing picture in the modern day. So - it is fair to say that speaking with Erica was a special experience, she doesn't hold back and I'm grateful for her plain speaking. On this episode, Frank Furedi joins Mark Bauerlein to discuss his new book, "The Road to Ukraine: How the West Lost its Way."
Frank Furedi is a sociologist and social commentator. He is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent in Canterbury. His most recent book is “The Road to Ukraine: How the West Lost its Way.” Since the late 1990s, Frank has been widely cited about his views on why Western societies find it so difficult to engage with risk and uncertainty. He has published widely about controversies relating to issues such as health, parenting children, food and new technology. His book Invitation To Terror; Expanding the Empire of the Unknown (2007) explores the way in which the threat of terrorism has become amplified through the ascendancy of precautionary thinking. It develops the arguments contained in two previous books, Culture of Fear (2002) and Paranoid Parenting (2001). Both of these works investigate the interaction between risk consciousness and perceptions of fear, trust relations and social capital in contemporary society. Frank has also written extensively about issues to do with education and cultural life. His book, Wasted: Why Education Is Not Educating (2009) deals with the influence of the erosion of adult authority on schooling. On Tolerance (2011) offers a restatement of the importance of this concept for an open society. Authority: A Sociological History (2013) examines how the modern world has become far more comfortable with questioning authority than with affirming it. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the1020/support

The conflict in Ukraine is the most recent instance where Western and Russian tensions are playing out. But while the US and European countries have been unified in isolating and sanctioning Russia, many in the so-called Global South are not on board.
Major western leaders are totally unprepared for a new age of great-power rivalries and are fuelling tensions with Eastern Powers. That's according to Frank Furedi the Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent and author of the upcoming book “The Road to Ukraine: How the West Lost its Way” who spoke to Shane this morning on the show.

A generation ago, humanity witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, the disappearance of the Eastern European bloc, and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Many thought that the victory of liberal democracy and competitive enterprise over communism and central planning would usher in a lasting era of peace and prosperity, but now the West appears to be undergoing an existential crisis. Across some of the most successful societies in history, liberal institutions are under attack from the far left and the far right. What brought about this stunning crisis of confidence in Western values and institutions and the ascendency of political and economic populism? Please join us to hear two leading thinkers and commentators on the rise of free societies explain the reasons for the growth of illiberalism and what, if anything, can be done to reverse that trend. We are delighted to welcome Dr. John Dominic Crossan on Saturday, March 5th as part of our WBC Speaker Series! As a preparation for this event, our pastor Art sat down to talk with Dr. Crossan to get to know him better. We hope you'll enjoy this bonus podcast conversation as they talk about Dr. Crossan's career and research, the historical Jesus, and what exactly Jesus was up to in the first century. On March 5th from 3:00 to 4:30pm, Dr. Crossan will present his lecture at Williamsburg Baptist entitled “The Vision of Easter,” based on his recent book, Resurrecting Easter: How the West Lost and the East Kept the Original Easter Vision (2018). In it, Crossan contends that Christians today would be wise to recapture the earliest understanding of the resurrection event. Unlike the Western image of a solitary Jesus rising from an empty tomb, Crossan observes that the standard image for the resurrection in Eastern Christianity is communal and collective, and this offers a profound opportunity for reflection and hope today. Dr. Crossan's lecture will be an exercise in "visual theology," with images plus commentary. There will also be plenty of time for Q&A. Note: He will be joining us via Zoom due to Covid precautions. You can join us in-person in our sanctuary, or via Zoom as well! You can find the Zoom link on the front page of our website at www.williamsburgbaptist.com. John Dominic Crossan, professor emeritus at DePaul University, is widely regarded as the foremost historical Jesus scholar of our time. He is the author of several bestselling books, including The Historical Jesus, How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian, God and Empire, Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, The Greatest Prayer, The Last Week, and The Power of Parable. He lives in Minneola, Florida. Find out more about Dr. Crossan at https://www.harpercollins.com/blogs/authors/john-dominic-crossan.

In this week's episode, I talk about the strange and terrible power of real, material, physical evil, and its lasting effect on all of us. I explain why it has such power and how its power persists for so long - and why and how it fails, each and every time. And I examine the ways in which we can all stand up against evil. This is probably one of my more unusual podcasts, in that I pull in references from all over the shop - Stranger Things, books, movies, history, and so on. But I had a lot of fun talking through it, and I hope you enjoy it as well. In this week's episode we cover the mysteries case of Taylor Kramer, former bass player for the psychedelic rock band Iron Butterfly (Ina-gada-davida bayyybayyy!). After Kramer retired from the rock world he became successful in the world of technology. Kramer had developed a, at the time, state of the art program that could find missing children. As time went on, however, Kramer started experiencing delusions and became more paranoid. Eventually Kramer went missing, leaving his grieving wife wondering what went wrong. Next we discuss the heart warming case of Michele West. As a teenager, West ran away from home and while on a Greyhound was concvinced by three men, who at first she perceived as frightening, to return home. Not only did these men help convince her to return home but they protected her on her journey. Finally Josh reads more from his newly discovered diaries that he wrote when he was a teenager in our second installment of "The Perks of Being a Joshflower". ------------------------------- For more Mike & Josh, check out their YouTube channels! Episode 8 features James Edwards, host of the The Political Cesspool, a Tennessee-based syndicated talk-radio show that has been on air now for 16 years. Edwards is a free-speech advocate and does not shy away from hard conversations, which has gotten him in some hot water over the years. Like his hero Nathan Bedford Forrest, Edwards has been maligned and vexed with guilt-by-association and guilt-by-accusation attacks for discussing topics that many others aren't willing to touch. Heck, he knew all about the tyranny of the PC gestapo and cancel culture back when some of us were still liberals and neocons. But also like Forrest, Edwards keeps raising the black flag and moving forward. Mentioned in our conversation are my blog posts "White souls aren't worth much these days" and "White Christians should feel guilty," and Edwards' 2010 book "Racism, Shmacism: How Liberals Use the 'R' Word to Push the Obama Agenda.” Also mentioned is Pat Buchanan's influence in Edwards' political activism, so I've included two TPC interviews in which Buchanan and Edwards discuss the stalwart's prophetic books “Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?” and “Churchill, Hitler, and ‘The Unnecessary War': How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World.” And if you'd like to listen to my appearance on TPC from back in April, click here. Live radio is a whole different beast than is podcasting. My sons claim that during my interview I said that Levon Helm played Loretta Lynn's "mother" in “Coal Miner's Daughter,” and when I referred to the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, I called it the Siege of "Gettysburg." I vehemently denied both charges, but they're probably right. Oy. Hey, at least I'm raising kids who pay attention to detail. I really don't know how Edwards does it live every Saturday night. Additional reading on Nathan Bedford Forrest's faith include articles "Nathan Bedford Forrest and God's Amazing Grace" by Mike Scruggs and "When the Devil Got Saved: The Christian Conversion of Nathan Bedford Forrest" by Shane E. Kastler. For deeper biographical dives, check out the book "A Rebel Born: A Defense of Nathan Bedford Forrest" by Lochlainn Seabrook and the many articles on Forrest at the Abbeville Institute.

Kishore Mahbubani—professor in the Practice of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore and author of "Has the West Lost It?: A Provocation"—joins the EWI podcast to discuss how the West's centuries-old status as the center of global wealth and power is being challenged by the rise of Asian powers—namely China and India—offering a fresh perspective on today’s geopolitical realities. Mahbubani states that "the West is not preparing itself for a world in which it can no longer dominate," and recommends specific structural adjustments to reflect changing circumstances.

In Kishore Mahbubani’s view, global power is shifting from the West to the Rest—from Europe and North America to Asia and Africa. He argues that changes will be required both in the West and the Rest to manage the shift gracefully for long-term stability. The rest of the world has learned a great deal from the West. Now it is the West’s turn to learn and to dispel some of its myths about the new world order. Singaporean diplomat and scholar Kishore Mahbubani served as his nation’s Ambassador to the United Nations and as President of the UN Security Council. He is a Professor in the Practice of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore where he was Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy from 2004 to 2017. His books include Has the West Lost It?: A Provocation (2018); The ASEAN Miracle (2017); The Great Convergence (2013); and The New Asian Hemisphere (2008). The Long Now Foundation and Asia Society Northern California are partnering on a series of talks in Long Now's Seminars About Long-term Thinking series. With the Asia Pacific region being vital to long term thinking for the planet, and especially for those on the Pacific coast, we believe that there is a fruitful collaboration to explore for both of our memberships and the wider public. The Asia Society's depth of knowledge about critical issues, key leaders and cultural perspectives coming out of Asia can inform the topics, people and conversations featured in the long-running Seminar series curated and hosted by Long Now's president Stewart Brand. Public access to the recorded talks broadens the reach of this in-depth collaboration.
Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber discusses the revolutionary work of the Holy Women Icons Project. As an intersectionally ecofeminist organization, the Holy Women Icons Project seeks to empower marginalized women and to be an accomplice in the work for justice for ethnic and racial minorities, women, LGBTQs, people with differing abilities, immigrants and refugees, the poor, animals, the earth, and all living at the margins of society. This is the fifth and final episode in my series Revisioning Christianity. The series began with the icon of anastasis and it ends with icons of holy women throughout history, religion, and mythology.Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber is the Founder and Executive Director of the Holy Women Icons Project. The Holy Women Icons Project seeks to empower marginalized women by telling the stories of revolutionary holy women through art, writing, and special events. Noticing a lack of women in iconography, she gave traditional iconography a folk-feminist twist by painting images of revolutionary holy women from history, mythology, and scripture. The Holy Women Icons Project also includes special events, retreats, workshops, lectures, sermons, and worship series related to these revolutionary holy women. And in 2017, HWIP began creating a retreat center on Hawaii Island to house these special events, artwork, and writings. Dr. Yarber speaks with John Shuck about her own journey toward simplicity, a renewed vocation, and her vision for queering the church by making the church fully inclusive and empowering for all people. She discusses her move to Hawaii with her wife and child, turning Holy Women Icons Project into a non-profit, her work in building self-esteem among adolescent girls, traversing grief, and honoring the stories of queer women of color through the Holy Women Icons Project. You can see and hear more of their story on the television show, Tiny House Nation. Rev. Dr. Yarber holds a Ph.D. in Art and Religion and is author of seven books that address the intersections among gender/sexuality, religion/spirituality, and the arts. An ordained, queer clergywoman, she served local churches for fourteen years, and she has taught graduate and undergraduate students since 2006. Her books include Microaggressions in Ministry, Holy Women Icons, Holy Women Icons Contemplative Coloring Book, The Gendered Pulpit, Dance in Scripture, Tearing Open the Heavens, & Embodying the Feminine in the Dances of the World's Religions. Other guests in the series, Revisioning Christianity include: John Dominic Crossan, Resurrecting Easter: How the West Lost and the East kept the Original Easter Vision, Bart Ehrman: The Triumph of Christianity: How A Forbidden Religion Swept the World, David Skrbina: The Jesus Hoax: How St. Paul’s Cabal Fooled the World for Two Thousand Years, andBishop John Shelby Spong: Unbelievable: How Neither Ancient Creeds nor the Reformation Can Produce a Living Faith Today. All of those interviews are available on podcast at Progressive Spirit.
Bishop John Shelby Spong has been on the leading edge of progressive Christianity. Over the decades he has shared his own honest journey with faith, doubt, and social activism as an Episcopal priest, bishop, and author. Some of his many books include: Living in Sin? A Bishop Rethinks Human Sexuality, Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism: A Bishop Rethinks the Meaning of Scripture, and Why Christianity Must Change or Die: A Bishop Speaks to Believers in Exile. He is the author of the newly released, Unbelievable: Why Neither Ancient Creeds Nor the Reformation Can Produce a Living Faith Today. This conversation with Bishop Spong is the fourth of five interviews in my series, Revisioning Christianity. Already we heard from John Dominic Crossan, Resurrecting Easter: How the West Lost and the East kept the Original Easter Vision, Bart Ehrman, author of The Triumph of Christianity: How A Forbidden Religion Swept the World, and David Skrbina: The Jesus Hoax: How St. Paul’s Cabal Fooled the World for Two Thousand Years. Next week, I speak with Angela Yarber about the Holy Women Icons Project. All of those interviews are available on podcast at Progressive Spirit.
Dr. David Skrbina makes the case that Christianity started as a hoax by Paul: "Jesus of Nazareth is one of the most famous men in history. There are good reasons to believe that he walked the earth some two thousand years ago, and was eventually crucified. But what about Jesus Christ, son of God? What if he never existed? What if the divine, virgin-born, resurrected Jesus Christ was a myth, a lie—even a hoax? That would have huge implications for modern-day Christianity; it would mean that there is a gigantic falsehood at the core of the religion of some two billion people. In this book, Dr. David Skrbina presents a profound and stunning theory: that St. Paul and a band of friends constructed a ‘Jesus hoax.’ They took a kernel of truth based on Jesus, the man, and turned him into the divine savior of humanity. They did so as a way to strike back at the hated Roman Empire, and to undermine its strength among the common people."That is from the back cover of The Jesus Hoax: How St. Paul's Cabal Fooled the World for Two Thousand Years by Dr. David Skrbina. https://www.davidskrbina.com/jesus-hoax This is the third part of series on Revisioning Christianity. Different scholars bring different views to help us understand the history of Christianity and its future. How did Christianity become empire’s religion? Is it believable today? Was it ever believable? Does it yet have a message to inspire peace and justice? Or is it the result of a malicious hoax and a bad idea? John Shuck’s five guests include 1) Bart Ehrman, author of the newly released, The Triumph of Christianity: How A Forbidden Religion Swept the World,2) John Dominic Crossan, who with his wife, Sarah Sexton Crossan have just released Resurrecting Easter: How the West Lost and the East Kept the Original Easter Vision. 3) John Shelby Spong, author of the newly released, Unbelievable: Why Neither Ancient Creeds Nor the Reformation Can Produce a Living Faith Today, 4) Angela Yarber, creator of the Holy Women Icons Project, and this week,5) David Skrbina, author of the newly released, The Jesus Hoax: How St. Paul’s Cabal Fooled the World for Two Thousand Years, Dr. David Skrbina is a senior lecturer in philosophy at the University of Michigan, Dearborn, where he's taught since 2003. His areas of expertise are philosophy of mind, philosophy of technology, and history of religion. Professor Skrbina's books include Panpsychism in the West, The Metaphysics of Technology and Mind that Abides. Professor Skrbina corresponded extensively with Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, and in 2010 published Technological Slavery. This was the first book written by Ted Kaczynski. It contains the only corrected version of his manifesto, five previously unpublished essays, and about 100 pages of letters to Dr. Skrbina. Dr. Skrbina is a pioneer in eco-philosophy encompassing ethics, metaphysics, and cosmology and is Deputy Director of the Eco-Philosophy Center. He ran for Lieutenant Governor for the state of Michigan in 2006 with the Green Party. He has a master’s degree in Mathematics and a Ph. D. In philosophy.
Bart Ehrman asks how did a religion that began with a small group of illiterate day laborers become the dominant religion of the Roman Empire in just three centuries? What was gained and what was lost when the Roman Empire became the Christian Roman Empire? This is the second part of series on Revisioning Christianity. Different scholars bring different views to help us understand the history of Christianity and its future. How did Christianity become empire’s religion? Was Christianity a hoax? Is it believable today? Does it yet have a message to inspire peace and justice? John Shuck's five guests include 1) John Dominic Crossan, who with his wife, Sarah Sexton Crossan have just released Resurrecting Easter: How the West Lost and the East Kept the Original Easter Vision. 2) John Shelby Spong, author of the newly released, Unbelievable: Why Neither Ancient Creeds Nor the Reformation Can Produce a Living Faith Today, 3) David Skrbina, author of the newly released, The Jesus Hoax: How St. Paul’s Cabal Fooled the World for Two Thousand Years, 4) Angela Yarber, creator of the Holy Women Icons Project, and this week, 5) Bart Ehrman, author of the newly released, The Triumph of Christianity: How A Forbidden Religion Swept the World, Bart Ehrman is a leading authority on the New Testament and the history of early Christianity. He is the author of more than 30 books and is Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has been on my program three times previously. Previously we discussed his books, Did Jesus Exist? Jesus Before the Gospels, and How Jesus Became God. John Shuck begins a five-part series on Revisioning Christianity. How did Christianity triumph? Was it a hoax? Is it unbelievable? Does it yet have a message to inspire peace and justice? He is the author of 30 or so books including his hugely influential, The Historical Jesus: The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant.
