This is occasionally—OK, almost never—called El Otro Clásico. It's a bit of a nod to the fact that these two clubs, BARCELONA and ATLÉTICO MADRID, have a shared enemy that they each hate more than their opponent here. Barça's beef with Real Madrid is the Clásico, Atléti's feud with their crosstown neighbors is a proper derby. This match is just a meeting of two of Spain's great institutions, a fixture that's spawned wild scorelines and decided league championships. In this case, it's a meeting of first and second in La Liga, and they're tied on 38 points.Joining us to preview the festivities is Ian Darke, the legendary commentator who's called matches across the world in the Premier League, the Champions League, and the World Cup. American fans might know him as the soundtrack to Landon Donovan's famous goal against Algeria in 2010, but he's also called some of the biggest matches in club football—like this one. He'll be behind the mic for ESPN on Saturday at 3pm Eastern Time, but first he's here with us to look ahead to the match—and look back on that time he and Steve McManaman stuck around the Camp Nou until 2 a.m. drinking beers with the locals! If you're enjoying The Football Weekend, please leave us a rating and review! It will help spread the good word. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

By popular request this week sees the return of the Big Fight Deep Dive, where we take an in-depth look at a key clash from years gone by in the company of somebody who was there.A fight that's been on the list for a long time is Chris Eubank vs Steve Collins from March 18th 1995.Eubank was the long-reigning WBO Super Middleweight champion and maybe the biggest name in British boxing at the time whilst Collins was WBO champ at the weight below and moving up to 168lbs for the first time.It was a tale of the unexpected from the very beginning with the fight ending up in the tiny town of Millstreet in County Cork and with all manner of things happening in the build-up. Ringside calling the action for Sky Sports was legendary commentator Ian Darke and it was our pleasure to welcome Darkey on board to look back at what was a memorable night.

At last, their separate footy traveler origin stories combine, as they recall the pivotal moments that led to the birth of the original Footy Travelers duo. Listen in for the story of Mike's big proposal to Colin in 2008 (one he needed time to warm up to), of their first World Cup experience at South Africa 2010, and the greatest consecutive 24 hours they've ever had traveling the globe for the beautiful game. Spoiler Alert: it involves a lot of Russian vodka. This episode also includes two special announcements, so be sure to listen through to the end! Foot(y)notes: Follow the Footy Travelers on Instagram to keep up to date with their upcoming World Cup travels. While we don't know all the details surrounding the opening ceremony, here's a few things we know so far. Episode 227 of the Sports Media Podcast features three guests. First up is Ian Darke, a football commentator for ESPN in America and for BT Sport in UK. Last week Fox Sports announced that Darke will be part of the network's coverage of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year. He is followed by Roberto Andrade Franco, a feature writer for ESPN and the author of one of the best pieces of sports writing in 2022. Franco recently wrote “The All-Star dreams of Uvalde's biggest José Altuve fan,” a piece for ESPN on the life of Tess Marie Mata, one of the 19 students killed in the May 24 massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Franco is followed by Julie Kliegman, a writer and copy chief for Sports Illustrated. She recently wrote a piece on Sarah Fuller's journey from kicker for Vanderbilt to mental health advocate and is working on a book about how athletes navigate mental health. In this podcast, Darke discusses how Fox was able to use him for this year's World Cup; when he anticipates learning what games he will call; calling the women's European Championship tournament; the growth of women's soccer in England; the potential of the 2026 World Cup as a game-changer in the United States, and more. Franco discusses why he was compelled to write about Mata for ESPN; traveling to Uvalde three times to report the story and how he approached his reporting; how the Mata family treated his queries; the inevitable tension of prying into people's lives about the worst moment of their life while knowing the importance of such stories to the public; why he opted to make his story about Texas, guns, the U.S., segregation, and the violence that surrounds us; how his background shaped the story, and more. Kliegman discusses why the intersection of mental health and athletics is of interest to her; what happened to Sarah Fuller since she made history at Vanderbilt; the challenge of navigating sudden fame for a college student; the climate of athletes discussing mental health; how this generation of athletes is more willing to be open about mental health and more.
