Star Trek's Double Troubles Don't they say you die if you meet yourself? Our intrepid Starfleet officers had better hope the answer is no, since encounters with doubles, doppelgängers, and duplicates appear to be just part of the job. From the two Kirks in “The Enemy Within” to Lower Decks's twinned Boimlers, Star Trek has offered up a host of alt versions of our regular characters over the years. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Clara Cook for a look at Star Trek's doubles, setting them in the context of their literary and cultural forebears, all the way back to Dostoevsky. We consider Sigmund Freud's work on The Uncanny, Carl Jung's idea of the shadow projection, and the sinister interplay between doubles and death. We also ponder why some characters seem to get on with their other selves just fine while the very notion that they aren't entirely unique in the universe is enough to prompt an existential crisis for others. Imagine meeting a total stranger that looked exactly like you do, now imagine experiencing that unreal phenomenon twice. This is exactly what happened to Edward (Eddy) Galland, David Kellman, and Robert Shafran in the early '70s. Under unlikely circumstances, these identical triplets were separated at birth and in even more unlikely circumstances reunited as college students. Their reunion, however, is not the most jarring part of their story. After relishing in the excitement, and embracing the fame that came with their story, the brothers uncovered their terrifying truth behind their separation. It is a story full of secret experiments, nature vs nurture studies, and an endless barrage of lies. This is the story of the three identical strangers Eddy, David, and Bobby.

In this episode of "Ojai: Talk of the Town" we check in with Dr. Morse about the Ojai Unified School District's mobilization in light of the school closure in March. We talk with her about the enormous social needs of the 2,400 students, including basic food and shelter, the district staff's heroic efforts to meet those needs, including providing 650 meals a day. The district is also struggling with technology gaps, getting thousands of students online, the challenges of learning while older students are caring for their younger siblings, the cancellation of such important events in the lives of students - and the community - such as sports games and graduation ceremonies. She talks about the cooperation and collaboration between schools in the county as administrators and teachers share best practices and learn from each other during this crisis, and how to incorporate those lessons going forward. We also talk about her PhD thesis on different approaches to teaching math to middle schoolers - managing that crucial transition between concrete and abstract thinking. She talks about her experiences as a young teacher, realizing that middle schoolers "are my people - I could really identify with them." We also talk about why school is for girls, not boys, and what she plans to do about it, which includes smashing up television sets and building hoverboards. We also talk about Sebastian Junger Witts' "Tribes," and the documentary, "Identical Strangers," about a bizarre social experiment in the late 1950s in which a set of triplets was each placed with a family from three different socio-economic backgrounds, only to reunite accidentally as young adults. We do not talk about Yankee clipper ships, ancient Egyptian monetary policy or Taylor Swift v. Kanye.

Hannah Gadsby is an Australian comedian and writer. Her new Netflix special is Nanette. There are certain ways it's a different sort of comedy special than you're used to. It's, for instance, more of an art history lecture than you'd probably expect. Its audience laughs much less than you're used to. And it'll probably make you cry more than other specials have. Those idiosyncrasies are just some of the reasons Nanette is "the most discussed comedy special in ages."Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
