Connacht Rugby and the IRFU have announced the appointment of Stuart Lancaster as the club's new Head Coach. Lancaster has signed a two-year contract and arrives at the province with a wealth of coaching experience at the highest level of the sport, across all three major European leagues and at international level. He most recently served as Head Coach of Racing 92 in France, and before then enjoyed a hugely successful seven-year spell as Senior Coach of Leinster Rugby. With primary responsibility for the day-to-day coaching of the team, he helped lead Leinster to four consecutive PRO14 titles and four Champions Cup finals, including victory in the 2018 decider. As the news broke, Galway Bay FM's William Davies joined John Morley and Darren Kelly on Galway Talks. == He made the move to Leinster after four years as Head Coach of the England national team, with whom he led for four Six Nations campaigns and the 2015 Rugby World Cup in his native country. He was appointed to that role after four years as the RFU's Head of Elite Player Development, where his primary remit was to help young players realise their potential at club and international level. Lancaster began his coaching career over 20 years ago, as Head of Academy at Leeds RFU. He was then appointed Head Coach of the Leeds Tykes in 2006, leading them to promotion to the English Premiership in his first year in charge. After a further year as Head Coach, he was promoted to the RFU. As Head Coach, Lancaster will also have responsibility for defence, thereby completing next season's coaching team. Joining him will be new attack coach Rod Seib, scrum & contact coach Cullie Tucker, and lineout & maul coach John Muldoon. Lancaster will take up the role in time for the beginning of pre-season training in July, and will be formally presented to the media and wider Connacht supporters next month.

The IRFU last week announced a change to the central contract system that has underpinned Irish rugby's success in the professional era, with provinces now expected to foot 40% of the salary bill of players on central contracts, with the IRFU saying the money saved will go towards investing in the three provinces outside of Leinster. On this week's podcast, Sinéad and Gavin discuss the IRFU's policy change, and whether its an admission the central contract system has failed. To what extent have the IRFU placed a thumb on the scale to further help Leinster, or is Leinster's dominance an inevitable result of Irish rugby finding the best way to success? Are Leinster's advantages unfair to the rest of Irish rugby, or should the other provinces pull up their socks? Have Joe Schmidt and Andy Farrell been wrong to pick so many Leinster players for the Irish team? What kind of problems will arise across Irish rugby if the inequalities are not addressed? And does this policy change go far enough - or is something more radical needed?Get in touch - gavincooney@the42.ie and sinead@thejournal.ieThis week's episode of The42 FM is brought to you by An Post Money Hosted on Acast. In this episode of the EY CFO Outlook podcast, Thelma O'Driscoll, CFO of the IRFU joins host Jonathan Healy to talk about her diverse career path, her passion for growing male and female rugby from the grassroots up, and how the role of CFO enables her to create a strong and sustainable financial foundation for the game.Thelma O'Driscoll's journey into the rugby world was not a direct one. Starting out in the family business, Thelma went on to work in various finance functions across computer manufacturing (Dell), telecommunications, and professional services. This diverse financial background has proven to be a solid foundation for her current role as CFO of the IRFU. And diversity has been a strong theme during Thelma's time in the male-dominated world of professional rugby. Having been the only female around the leadership table when she first joined in 2016, the organisation has since made huge strides, with 40% of the IRFU Union Committee now comprising female colleagues. Thelma is also very passionate about growing women's rugby and increasing investment in it. They also discuss:Financial Strategy - The IRFU is a not-for-profit organisation, meaning all revenue is reinvested into the game. Over half of the IRFU's €90m income is distributed to provinces, clubs and grassroots rugby.Challenges in Sports Finance - The IRFU's income varies in cycles, and careful management keeps national teams and grassroots rugby stable. Thelma explains why tough decisions are needed to invest wisely and control spending in order to maintain sustainability.Growing Women's Rugby - Women's rugby is experiencing rapid growth and the IRFU are committed to grow the game further and increase investment. This strategic plan includes decentralising the current model and moving to four contracted provincial women's teams. New sponsors like Goodfella's Pizza are investing in women's rugby, with more to come. The Future of Irish Rugby - At the moment Ireland is at the pinnacle of world rugby, but sustaining its position requires careful financial planning. With a debt-free model, Thelma's goal is to strengthen its finances with modern systems to support all levels of Irish rugby.

A groundbreaking research project funded by Lero, the Research Ireland Centre for Software, and the IRFU is deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse the tackle event in rugby to enhance player welfare and performance, resulting in a more exciting and dynamic game. The project team, led by Professor Anthony Ventresque, Director of the Complex Software Lab at the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin, has the potential to provide coaches, players and referees with incredible insights into tackle technique, identify areas for improvement, and ultimately reduce the risk of injury. "Our research is focused on developing AI that can understand the complexities of rugby tackles. By analysing large amounts of video data, we can identify patterns and trends that may not be apparent to the human eye. This information can be used to develop targeted training programs to improve tackle technique and player safety." PhD researchers Will Connors and Caoilfhionn Ní Dheoráin, are teaming up with Dr Kathryn Dane to harness the power of AI in the world of rugby. This collaborative research project aims to develop AI models capable of automatically identifying and analysing the tackle event, with the potential of improving training techniques. Will Connors, who has represented Ireland at senior, U20, and sevens levels, said that as a rugby player with a Computer Science background, he is fascinated by AI's potential to analyse and optimise tackle technique. "I believe this research can help players at all levels improve their tackling skills and contribute to a more exciting and dynamic game." Dr Kathryn Dane, who has also represented Ireland at senior international level, said this project highlights the crucial link between technique and safety in rugby at all levels of the game. "By using AI to analyse a large number of tackles, we can identify specific areas where technique can be improved to enhance both performance and player welfare." Computer Scientist Caoilfhionn Ní Dheoráin said she is excited by the challenge of applying Machine Learning at scale to analyse rugby tackles in the domestic club and school game. "This project offers a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of AI and contribute to a deeper understanding of this complex and dynamic sport." The IRFU's Medical Manager, Dr Caithríona Yeomans, who holds a PhD in Sports Sciences, said this research will be hugely helpful to enhancing player welfare in rugby "By understanding the mechanics of tackles and identifying areas for improvement, we can help players develop safer and more effective techniques. The collaboration with Lero and the Complex Software Lab at Trinity College Dublin is invaluable in our ongoing efforts to make rugby a safer sport for all." This collaboration stems from the IRFU's decision to lower the tackle height in the domestic game. The insights gained from the video analysis will help identify the trial's impact on player welfare and the overall game. The IRFU's National Rugby Development Manager and Tackle Trial project lead, Colm Finnegan, says: "We are excited to work with Lero to be at the forefront of innovation in such an important area of Rugby, which reaffirms our aim of making the sport as safe as possible whilst also being an enjoyable game for all." One of the project's recent publications, 'Frisbees and Dogs: Domain Adaptation For Object Detection with Limited Labels in Rugby Data', explores how AI can be trained to accurately detect essential elements in rugby videos, even with limited training data. This is a significant breakthrough in this area. Another recent publication, 'Are we tackle ready? Cross-sectional video analysis of match tackle characteristics in elite women's Rugby Union' examines tackle techniques in the women's game. This study found that many tackles lacked full completion of World Rugby's 'Tackle Ready' recommended techniques, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to r...
