But that Old Town Vibes is something on its own and James Beech, one of the hosts from Only Old Town knows this all too well. James moved around the country as a child before settling in Scottsdale as an adult. A serial entrepreneur, some may call him, James saw a need for the hospitality industry in Old Town to help their guests know the ins/outs of where to go and what to do. If you're an old school listener of the pod, then over the years you've probably heard Lauren and Nicole mention their SINGLE GREATEST SUCCESS STORY* as podcasters, which is the marriage of Episode 25 guest Vanessa Ravenscroft. Well, get ready for a lovey-dovey episode, because today Lauren and her guest co-host Vanessa are talking to the woman who made it all possible: baker, artist, and Vanessa's wife, Sarah Ravenscroft! Sarah hit the ground running by living every lesbian's dream (i.e., dating her best friend at an all-girls Catholic high school). But when that relationship had run its course, she found herself grappling with an all-too-relatable queer conundrum: how do you find potential partners; *especially* if you're considered "straight-presenting?" Sarah discusses the queer platonic relationship she entered into with an ace male friend (they had a dog *and* a house!), and the fateful night that Vanessa slid into her DMs. Squeal along with Lauren as Sarah and Vanessa share their love story, from that very first message on Twitter to the day Nicole officiated their wedding at Disneyland!Follow Sarah and all of her fuzzy/feathered kids on Twitter at @Squatchycat, and on Insta and Threads at @fuzziesoflakeview! Show Notes: Virginia Ravenscroft has had a long and winding road since graduating from Harvard in 1992. Her journey has taken her through a diverse range of experiences, including graphic design, teaching, project management, and tech. However, despite her success in these fields, she felt that something was missing. She realized that she wanted to offer a more healing type of work. It's something that she had been learning about, practicing, and pursuing training for over time. Virginia's journey is emblematic of the changing nature of work in the 21st century, where people are no longer expected to have one job for life. Instead, they are encouraged to explore different paths and find work that aligns with their passions and values. Founder of Two Companies Virginia's two companies, Offering Abundance and Abolition in the Bones, are the culmination of her journey. Offering Abundance is a company that offers a diverse range of services, including coaching, software development, travel arrangements, especially to places that are off the beaten track, and healing practices. Virginia's goal with Offering Abundance is to provide a one-stop-shop for all of her clients' needs by providing a diverse range of services that can help people in many different ways. Abolition in the Bones, on the other hand, is a company that focuses on anti-racism coaching. Virginia's journey and her two companies highlight the importance of finding work that aligns with one's values and passions. Abolition in the Bones The focus of Abolition in the Bones is anti-racism coaching and support for those who have experienced racism. The company provides a 15-20 session curriculum that is tailored to each individual's needs. Virginia works one-on-one with her clients to help them understand the impact of racism and how to be anti-racist. Virginia explains that one of the ethical problems with white people in anti-racism coaching is that they don't really know about the impact of racism as a person of color. Virginia is aware of the issue of a white person doing racism coaching, and the blind spots she may encounter. To overcome this, she has an accountability circle of Black women who are the experts that help her shape the curriculum and review her practice. Virginia's Healing Practice Virginia's healing practice is one of the many services that she offers through Offering Abundance. She is trained in a modality called Indigenous Focusing Oriented Therapy (I-FOT). I-FOT is a body-based practice that attends to the wisdom within the body. It is a decolonizing practice that is rooted in Indigenous ways of healing. Virginia explains the origin of the practice and the difference between this practice and the traditional western approach to illness. Virginia's approach to healing is focused on helping people become their best selves and understand the wisdom within their bodies. She talks about who this practice serves and why they look for a healing practice outside of the traditional medical industry. Virginia's journey and her two companies have important implications for the changing nature of work in the 21st century and that it is possible to have a diverse range of experiences and still find work that is fulfilling. Working in a Healing Practice Virginia discusses her experiences with healing and anti-racism and the exercises she uses to help clients uncover and address their problems and discover the root cause through paying close attention and focusing on the body's reactions in various situations. She talks about how we perceive intelligence and her education practice. She talks about her work as an end-of-life doula. Her goal is to focus on queer and trans people as they approach the end of their life and how she can help them plan, communicate, and cope with this difficult period. Working as an Anti-racism Practitioner Virginia talks about her work in Abolition in the Bones and it helps people with internalized racism, unconscious bias, and problematic attitudes. She talks about the "why exercise," to recognise behavior. As an example, she talks about thinking about a time when they felt like they had to control a situation. Virginia believes that underneath this urge to control or dominate is fear and a desire for safety. She also highlights how this sense of being out of control can be triggered in situations with racial components. She explains how this is used to recognize the trigger and control the response, and how body-based exercises help people recognise unconscious impulsive behaviors. Virginia believes that understanding the interiority and full humanity of people of color is crucial for overcoming racism and promoting inclusivity. Virginia is passionate about anti-racism and has been working on it since college. She attended an anti-racism workshop led by a black woman, and a presentation by Jacob Holt, a photographer from the Netherlands, who documented racial injustice and counteracted each one with a new photograph which challenged her to work on anti-racism work. She also mentions how she became aware of her own unconscious racial behavior. Influential Courses and Professors Virginia discusses her experiences with various courses and professors at Harvard, including Professor Edwin Cranston, who was her advisor throughout her sophomore, junior, and senior year. She was fortunate enough to come into Harvard already speaking Japanese fairly well, and she went into classical Japanese classes with him. She also mentions a course on the art and architecture of Suleiman the Magnificent with Gülru Necipoğlu, Simon Schama's class on art and history in the Baroque era, and Regina Johnson's class on Modern Japanese Women Writers. Welcome to November 6, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the origins of our favorite snack and smooth solos. Ignacio Nacho Anaya was the host of The Victory Club in the early 1940s. When the chef of the restaurant turned up missing one night, Ignacio hurried to the kitchen to whip up something for his favorite guests and nachos have been a favorite snack ever since. Though they started with humble chips, cheese and jalapenos, today's recipes are inspired by almost every culture and cuisine. Not only can nachos feed a crowd, they can be a meal in themselves when piled high with any kind of protein and sauce. Try your favorite leftovers with melted cheese over chips and you are sure to make your culinary mark. On National Nachos Day celebrate this lightning fast meal that is always a crowd pleaser. The song “Baker Street” by Gerry Rafferty is instantly recognizable and its all thanks to the epic saxophone solo. This classic is a pretty good rock song, but could have easily been forgotten, if not for that saxophone riff. Rafael Ravenscroft, who played the solo, was paid only about 36 dollars for his work. He came up with the music on the spot and afterwards hated his performance, which he thought was off key. Clearly no one else agreed. But don't feel too bad for Mr. Ravenscroft. He went on to perform with Pink Floyd, ABBA, and even Daft Punk. On National Saxophone Day, we celebrate the birthday of Adolfe Sax, the inventor of the instrument that gave so many pop songs their smooth, memorable vibe. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Co-founder of the popular podcast, Extreme Uncertainty, Mike Ravenscroft, shares why he believes being liked is an integral part of gaining momentum in the startup scene. Mike knows he's spot on when it comes to understanding what it takes to go from a Seed to a Series A stage tech investment company, as he's spent the latter part of his career consulting for venture-backed startups at Dreamit Ventures Healthtech. Dreamit is a Healthtech growth platform that works with leading digital health and medical startups to accelerate their path to commercialization and fundraising. Join us as Mike explains why being liked can sometimes be the tipping point for a startup venture's success or failure and how to apply this to your business.Mike Ravenscroft is a successful manager at Dreamit Ventures, where he oversees growth programs for startups that are ready to scale. Mike is also the host of Extreme Uncertainty, a podcast geared for entrepreneurs. In Mike's professional experience, which has spanned various industries and across global geographies, he knows that being liked is an important part of business success. Having come by the startup world through an unusual route, Mike understands the many different working cogs that Founders and Entrepreneurs need to control. To create a successful startup, one needs to create an environment of diverse input and backgrounds. Being charismatic and likable will attract more success, especially when starting from the ground up. When you break down the concept of likeability, it's easy to understand why it is not a necessary ingredient but definitely one that can move your business forward. Building a startup is one of the hardest things you can do in business. You need to have great advisors, put together an outstanding team, raise capital and attract customers. In most fields, this is a challenge. It's hard to convince people of a value or a service that never existed before. This is where the likeability factor comes into play. When you are likable, people want to work with you. They want to bring you into their network and share your ideas and concepts. Creating likeability is sometimes as easy as paying things forward within your network or circle. If someone extends favor to you, do the same to the next person. Being open to helping others, whether it be making introductions or giving feedback on a pitch, is something that will pay dividends for a long time going forward. When putting together a startup, the most important thing most people think about is funding. But you shouldn't put all your focus into funding. The most important thing for a startup is for the Founder to be flexible in his thinking. To consistently stay true to his vision but allow for flexibility in the execution. This comes down to coachability. When you are willing to listen to your advisory board, you are willing to pivot when needed. Sometimes the methods you think are the ones to drive you in the direction you desire are not the best ones to use. No one is always on target. When investors are putting large sums of money into a company, especially one where there is a considerable risk, such as Fintech and Healthtech, they look to see what kind of advisory board the founders put together. Did they pull yes men from a pool of people, or did they appoint the individuals who were the first to cut a check? The smart ones understand the advisory board should be people who understand their vision, have a sense of their industry, and know-how to work it. Having a likable persona will make your start-up more attractive to the right investors. Having a solid advisory board gives your Seed company or startup more credibility. An important hat for CEOs and Founders is to have the ability to read people. You need to know how to captivate them and hold their interest long enough so you can explain the benefits of yourSupport the show
