Today we are going to talk about 4 Ways to Increase the Productivity of your Business. Every business owner is on the lookout for effective ways to increase productivity for their team. The reality is that business owners and employees are ineffective and unproductive probably more often than they think. The key is to reduce lost hours and wasted manpower. Here are some ways you can take an active approach to increasing the efficiency and productivity of your business. Productivity Tip #1: Lead by example. If you are a business owner, you must absolutely be held to the highest standard. If you work directly with an assistant or team of employees, you should always lead by example. If you2019re a habitual procrastinator or have trouble focusing on productivity, you would serve yourself and your business well by hiring an accountability coach. An accountability coach will show you several effective ways to increase productivity in your business - and hold you accountable for your actions, as well as your results. When you are asked to explain to your accountability coach why you didn2019t achieve the task at hand because you chose to watch T.V, it won2019t feel comfortable to be put on the hot seat by your coach. Productivity Tip #2: Work each day with a To-Do List. Creating a to-do list is one of the most efficient ways to increase the productivity of your business. Crafting a detailed to-do list for you and your team will help them comprehend exactly what is expected of them each day. This will motivate them to complete the tasks they2019ve been given with the greatest efficiency and effectiveness. If your assistant or team is known for procrastinating, this is an especially effective tool for encouraging them to stay focused. When you don2019t leave wiggle room for lollygagging, you2019ll have one heck of a productive team. Customize each To-Do List to each team member, so that each team member can be held directly accountable for their actions. Productivity Tip #3: Delegate appropriately. If you cannot delegate, you cannot increase productivity. Period. The key to increasing productivity is realizing where your time is best spent. Where your assistant2019s or team2019s time is spent matters as well. When you can delegate the right tasks to the right person, your business will operate without a hitch. However, hang on to tasks you should have let go of long ago, and you stagnate your success. When you need a task complete, look to the personality and experience of your team in order to decide which employee would be best suited for the task. Productivity Tip #4: Build a bigger team! It2019s a simple concept, really. The more team members you have producing, the more work you2019ll generate, and hopefully, the more money you2019ll bring in for your business. Hiring additional team members is one of the most effective ways to increase productivity for your business. For lower priority or common tasks you should be able to find someone at a reasonable rate. However, for senior or high-priority positions, you2019ll obviously need to hire experienced professionals. As a basic productivity rule, you should NEVER be answering your phone, doing bookkeeping or sending invoices. You should be spending your time devoted to driving income, while your team members tend to the basic tasks. As you can see, there are several ways to increase the productivity of your business. These tips are simple, yet effective ways of instilling the principles of productivity in your team. Action Step: What will your next steps be so you can increase productivity and achieve your goals? Create your game plan to help put you in the highest probability position for goal achievement. Take these four tips and turn them into four separate weekly goals to be achieved within the next month. Write down specific actions you can take to achieve each weekly goal and put them in your calendar so they cannot be ignored. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex reins in the New Year by discussing the latest news surrounding the Red Sox. Numerous outlets are reporting the Red Sox are not going to bid on star Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka2019s services. Though it would2019ve been surprising if the Red Sox signed Tanaka, it2019s relatively surprising that the Red Sox are seemingly out of the sweepstakes this early. The Red Sox, as an organization, almost always negotiate with every major free agent. Except, evidently, Tanaka. Stephen Drew remains unsigned, as many teams are reluctant to part with the first round draft pick it would take to sign him. Alex says draft picks have become overvalued in baseball, as it2019s not a guarantee that a first round pick will be as good of a major league player as Drew is. The Red Sox have one of the best farm systems in baseball, as evidenced by John Sickel2019s prospect ratings last season. They2019ve signed numerous free agents, and surrendered several draft picks over the years. The Red Sox are proof that it2019s possible to build an elite farm system even while surrendering picks. Former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon participated in a radio interview with WEEI last week, in which he said chemistry was the main reason the Red Sox won last season. Alex says Papelbon is one of many people who continually sell last year2019s team short. They won because of talent, not an intangible factor like team chemistry or character. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex analyzes how the Phillies2019 new 25-year, $2.5 billion television contract will effect their spending and the competitive balance of baseball. Though Hall of Fame voting results haven2019t been released yet, many sportswriters have published their ballots. It2019s clear that a significant percentage of voters opted to vote for Jack Morris and not Mike Mussina. There2019s little argument for selecting Morris over Mussina, especially when one looks at the numbers. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.

The World Series is tied up at two games a piece, as a full team effort lifted the Red Sox over the Cardinals in Game 4. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex recaps Games 2, 3 and 4 and previews the rest of the series. The Red Sox beat themselves in Game 2, as the game-winning score on Craig Breslow2019s errant throw to third base. Breslow has been awful in the series, and should no longer pitch in high leverage situations. Game 3 was arguably the craziest ending to a World Series game ever, as no sport fan likes to see a game decided by a technicality (unless it2019s the tuck rule). But though Jim Joyce2019s obstruction call is how the Red Sox lost the game, it2019s not why they lost the game. The game was lost because Jarrod Saltalamacchia decided to launch a throw to third base when he had no chance of getting the base runner. The game was also because John Farrell apparently has no idea what a double switch is, as he had Brandon Workman bat in the top of the ninth of a tie game in the World Series. If Farrell had wanted Workman to pitch in the bottom of the ninth, he should2019ve subbed out Saltalamacchia for Ross in the bottom of the eighth, and had the pitcher and catcher2019s spots flipped in the order (Saltalamacchia had struck out to end the top of the eighth 2026SURPRISE, SURPRISE). What2019s even weirder, though, is that Farrell removed Workman after he allowed a bloop single to Yadier Molina in the ninth. So if Farrell was going to go to Koji Uehara in the inning anyway, he should2019ve had Mike Napoli pinch-hit for Workman in the top of the frame and then removed him once the bottom of the ninth came around. The decision to let Workman bat while Napoli sat on the bench was inexcusable, and hardly confidence inducing. Farrell has had a shoddy postseason. One of Farrell2019s crutches has been keeping Jonny Gomes in the starting lineup even though he2019s slumping. It2019s ironic, then, that Gomes was the hero on the one night he almost sat. Gomes was inserted into the lineup 90 minutes before Game 4, as Shane Victorino was scratched because of a bad back. After an impassioned speech from David Ortiz prior to the inning, Gomes launched a three-run homer off Cardinals reliever Seth Maness. The Red Sox have had a knack this postseason for coming up big when one would least expect it, and Gomes fit that bill on Sunday night. Clay Buchholz battled through four gritty innings of one-run ball, and is deserving of an apology from every sports talk radio caller out there. The notion that professional baseball players ask out of World Series games because they 201Cdon2019t want it201D is asinine. Maybe Buchholz2019s severely diminished velocity on Sunday will finally convince people that he2019s actually hurt. Felix Doubront picked up Buchholz, and tossed two and two-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen. It2019s amazing that he said he 201Cwasn2019t comfortable201D in a bullpen role just one month ago. John Lackey pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief, and Koji Uehara nailed down his sixth save of the playoffs in the ninth inning. Uehara picked off pinch-runner Kolten Wong to end the game, leaving the tying run, Carlos Beltran, at the plate. Games 5, 6 and possibly 7 should be terrific. This is what it2019s all about. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex breaks down Game 1 of the World Series and looks ahead to the rest of the series. Jon Lester was dominant, as he tossed seven and two-third shutout innings on Wednesday night. He became only the third pitcher in Major League Baseball history to throw shutouts in his first two career World Series starts. Lester established the inside part of the plate with his four-seam fastball, which allowed him to paint the outside corner with his cutter against right-handed batters. David Ross called a terrific game behind the plate, as Lester put forth a gem. The Cardinals plethora of defensive miscues early on aided the Red Sox, as they didn2019t appear to be ready for the moment. It2019s inconceivable that a team like the Cardinals go make three defensive mistakes in the first two innings of a World Series game, all of which led to runs. Adam Wainwright threw 60 pitches in his first two innings, and exited after five frames. Though Wainwright and Michael Wacha have been dominant this postseason, facing this relentless Red Sox lineup is a different animal. John Lackey is slated to start in Game 2, as he will take the mound for the first time after outdueling Justin Verlander in Game 3 of the ALCS. It is believed that Jake Peavy will start Game 3, as Ken Rosenthal reported last night that Clay Buchholz will be pushed back to Game 4. Buchholz2019s shoulder obviously still isn2019t right, as he2019s allowed 10 runs in 16 and two-third innings in the playoffs. The frustration many fans have with Buchholz is understandable, as he hasn2019t proven himself to be durable. But few pitchers are. If Buchholz was healthy, he wouldn2019t have missed three months of the season. Contrary to what some may think, players don2019t just miss time for the fun of it. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about how Jim Leyland walked away from the dugout in the classiest way possible, and gives a brief retrospective on his career. There is more to Leyland than meets the ear, and certainly more than cigarettes. Don Mattingly gave arguably the most awkward press conference ever, when he openly chastised Dodgers management for making him work the past season on a one-year contract earlier this week. The Dodgers appear to still have questions about Mattingly2019s managerial ability, which is understandable. Outside of a three- month stretch of excellence this season, his teams have gone 218-217. What was even more bizarre than Mattingly2019s behavior at his press conference this week, though, was the Giants decision to resign Tim Lincecum for two years and $35 million. It2019s too much of a commitment to give to Lincecum, even if his peripheral statistics indicate he2019s not as bad as his rising ERA would indicate. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. He will be back on Monday to break down Games 2, 3 and 4 of the World Series. Three wins to go!
The Red Sox are going to the World Series. The most historic turnaround in modern baseball history is almost complete. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex recaps Games 5 and 6 of the ALCS against the Tigers and previews the World Series match-up against the Cardinals. Alex talks about the Red Sox2019s patience at the plate, and how that was one of the major keys of the series. Max Scherzer was dominant in Games 2 and 6, but had to exit his starts early because of high pitch counts. The Tigers mediocre bullpen was incapable of protecting leads in both contests, and that was the series right there. Few players embody that patience more than Xander Bogaerts, who walked twice in Game 6. Bogaerts2019 walk in the seventh inning chased Scherzer from the game on Saturday night, and led to Shane Victorino2019s series-winning grand slam. Victorino had been 2-23 in the series prior to smashing that grand slam off reliever Jose Veras. He has embodied the heart and soul of this team all season, and it isn2019t just because Fenway Park sings Bob Marley2019s 201CThree Little Birds201D in unison every time he comes to the plate. It2019s because he2019s a damn good player. So good, in fact, he led all right fielders in WAR this season. Koji Uehara won ALCS MVP honors after tossing six scoreless innings against the Tigers. The Red Sox2019s bullpen was fantastic, as Craig Breslow has yet to allow a run this postseason. Junichi Tazawa owned Miguel Cabrera, which was arguably the biggest match-up advantage of the series as well. The Red Sox proved to be a better team than the Tigers, as they are deeper and more complete. The Tigers flaws, such as a bad bullpen and atrocious base running, proved to be too much for them to overcome. Add in the fact that Fielder was a corpse (0 RBI in the playoffs) and Cabrera wasn2019t himself (.250 batting average in the playoffs), and it2019s easy to see why the Tigers struggled to score runs in the series. Though the Cardinals aren2019t as star-studded as the Tigers, they2019re a better team. They finished with the best record in the National League, and don2019t have a gaping hole on their roster. Allen Craig will likely be back in the lineup as well, which should give the Cardinals an offensive boost. Alex says the key to the series is to beat both Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn in Games 3 and 4. If the Red Sox can split against Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha while beating both of them, they should be in pretty good shape. This is the seventh time the Red Sox or Cardinals will play in the World Series over the past 10 years, and a rematch of 2004. The Cardinals are an excellent organization, as 17 of the 25 players on their NLCS roster were homegrown. But the Red Sox, though they2019ve taken their lumps, have proven to be an excellent organization too. It should be a great series. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
With the Red Sox and Tigers now tied at two wins per team in the ALCS, the season will come down to which team can win two games against the other club2019s three best starting pitchers. Getting two wins against Anibal Sanchez, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander is a tough task indeed, but it is possible. The Red Sox, after all, did it in the first three games of the series. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex previews Games 5, 6 and 7 (if necessary). He says if the Red Sox can get the Tigers starting pitchers to exit the games in the sixth or seventh innings, they have to like their chances against the bullpen provided the game is close (which should be the case in Game 5, considering how well Lester has pitched since the All Star Break). The Red Sox bullpen has a 0.73 ERA this postseason. They have the definitive advantage at the end of games. Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz need to play better, too. Ortiz2019s only hit in the series has been the grand slam he hit off Joaquin Benoit in Game 2. Pedroia misplayed two ground balls in Game 4, and has more strikeouts than hits this postseason. Xander Bogaerts should find his way into the lineup for Game 5 as well, because Stephen Drew and Will Middlebrooks have been offensive black holes this postseason. They have combined to hit .132 in the playoffs. It2019s time for a change. Alex recaps the pitching performances of John Lackey and Jake Peavy in Games 3 and 4, and says Lackey2019s redemption process is now complete. This is why the Red Sox acquired him prior to 2010. The guy represents everything baseball fans should want in a pitcher. He outdueled Verlander on Tuesday, and fans suddenly don2019t feel all that apprehensive about a Lackey/Verlander duel in a potential Game 7. Peavy was horrendous on Wednesday, and though his poor outing was not a referendum on the Jose Iglesias trade, it was still disheartening to watch. Peavy didn2019t have command of his breaking pitches all night, and paid the price. Jim Leyland orchestrated a massive lineup change in Game 4, batting Torii Hunter in the leadoff spot and having Miguel Cabrera bat second. It appeased all of the sabermetrics out there, and appeased Tigers fans as well. After scoring just six runs in the first three games of the series, the Tigers plated seven runs on Wednesday. Hunter and Cabrera combined to knock in four runs. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex gives his thoughts on the latest developments in the NLCS, and defends Yasiel Puig2019s showboating. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex previews the first postseason series the Red Sox will play in since 2009. The Rays will come to Fenway Park for games one and two of the ALDS this weekend, as the Red Sox look to oust their divisional rivals. Alex says the Indians would2019ve been a more favorable match-up for the Red Sox, as lefties Matt Moore and David Price have stifled the Red Sox in the past. It is imperative for the right-handed hitters in the lineup (Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli and Will Middlebrooks) to each have a big series. The Red Sox2019s ALDS roster is beginning to take shape, as John Farrell said the team would go with 11 pitchers prior to Wednesday2019s intrasquad scrimmage. Felix Doubont, despite his struggles out of the bullpen last weekend, is emerging as the favorite for the final spot in the bullpen. It2019s a surprising move, but Doubront is more versatile than Matt Thornton is. Doubront averages nearly a strikeout per inning, so he could serve as a late-inning power arm option. Or, if needed, he could come in for multi-inning stints. It was also announced on Wednesday that Jon Lester will start game one on Friday, an honor which he deserves. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex previews the rest of the postseason, and says why baseball fans everywhere should be rooting for a Red Sox and Dodgers World Series. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer fired Dale Sveum this week, and could be looking to hire Joe Girardi for the vacancy. Alex talks about Girardi2019s options, and looks back at what might2019ve happened had Sveum been named manager of the Red Sox in 2012. Oh, and Alex Rodriguez is portraying himself as the victim in his appeal hearings with MLB. Of course2026 Email Alex at areime@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex recaps the final series of the regular season and attempts to put this 97 win campaign in context before the postseason begins on Friday. If the Red Sox are eliminated in the first round, it will be a disappointment, but it won2019t be a disappointing season. Given where expectations were at the start of the year, finishing with the best record in the American League and advancing to the playoffs has to be considered a success regardless of how it ends. Still, expectations should be high, as this team has proven itself to be the best in the league through the six-month season. The Red Sox should be expected to win against all three of the Rays, Rangers or Indians. If the Red Sox are eliminated early, it will look awfully like the eighth inning did on Saturday night. Junichi Tazawa and Craig Breslow couldn2019t keep the Red Sox lead intact, and surrendered two runs in the frame. Felix Doubront struggled out of the bullpen on Sunday, and has shown little interest on pitching as a reliever in October. Doubront has the talent to continue to progress in his career, but he has a long way to go in terms of maturity. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex gives a final look at the AL East standings, and gives a season memoriam on the Yankees. It2019s difficult to look at anything in a genuine light in the era of cynicism, but Alex says Mariano Rivera2019s final appearance at Yankee Stadium last Thursday was one of those moments that every sports fan has to be appreciate. It was indelible memory for all involved, and outweighs any chair made of broken bats, sandcastle or anything else Rivera received on his farewell tour. Bud Selig officially announced he would retire after the 2014 season last week. Alex briefly talks about Selig2019s decision, and says Selig has done a lot more good than bad in his tenure as commissioner. We will be privy to three elimination games in a three-day span thanks to the new wild card system this week. Enjoy! Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
The Red Sox2019s magic number to clinch a playoff berth is down to one game, meaning they will clinch at some point over the next four games at home. It2019s been a historical turnaround for the worst to first Red Sox, and Alex takes a look at what can be attributed to their success this season. Though improved team character has played a role, talent is the biggest reason why the Red Sox are on the cusp of a 100-win season. Playing up the beards, and downplaying the ability level of this team is a disservice to them. John Farrell revealed this week he2019s decided on a playoff starter for game one of a playoff series. Jon Lester is slated to pitch on the last day of the regular season, and would be in line to pitch game one on regular rest. Lester, who has a 2.38 ERA in the second half, has earned the opportunity. Alex recaps the first two games against the Orioles, both of which were close losses. Koji Uehara gave his up first run since June 26 on Tuesday night, as his streak of 37 consecutive retired batters came to an end. Despite the rare blown save on Tuesday, there are no questions about Uehara entering the postseason. There remain questions about the middle relief core; however, which is why Craig Breslow getting out of a high-leverage jam (two in scoring position and nobody out) in the eighth inning was such a positive development. Breslow had a .75 ERA since the All Star Break entering Wednesday2019s game. Jacoby Ellsbury2019s status remains unclear, as he said he2019ll 201Chopefully be back by the end [of the regular season]201D to the media on Wednesday. Though it2019s almost certain Ellsbury will return for the playoffs, it is uncertain what kind of player he will be. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about the AL East and wild card standings, as the scuffling Rays and Rangers played each other this week. Alex says the Indians, given their schedule, remain a favorite to overtake one of the Rays or Rangers for the second wild card spot before the season concludes. The biggest (and surprising) reason for the Pirates winning season, Matt Harvey2019s decision to rehab his UCL tear and another reason why Jeffrey Loria is the worst owner in baseball are talked about as well. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex talks about the scorching hot Red Sox, who swept the Yankees and eliminated them from divisional contention this weekend. This weekend was Mariano Rivera2019s final career trip to Fenway Park, and the Red Sox held a touching ceremony to commemorate Rivera2019s career prior to Sunday night2019s game. The Red Sox presented Rivera with a variety of gifts, including a portrait of his reaction when he was cheered at opening day in 2005. Arguably the most striking thing about the ceremony, though, is how far the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry has fallen in recent years. Dustin Pedroia has never faced Rivera in a playoff series, for example. Alex spends a lot of time talking about this weekend2019s slate of games, including another thrilling victory on Friday night. It2019s fun to talk about the team2019s improved chemistry (beards and all) as the main explanation for this season2019s historic turnaround, but the club2019s deep lineup and propensity to have good at-bats is the biggest reason for the plethora of come-from-behind, and thrilling wins. Jon Lester dominated on Saturday afternoon, and looks as if he is ready to be the starter in game one of a playoff series. Clay Buchholz looked shaky on Sunday night, so Lester may be the guy who gets the ball. Koji Uehara continues to be unworldly, as he2019s retired a club record 37 consecutive batters. However, the bridge to Uehara remains shaky, as Craig Breslow surrendered a game-tying two-run double to Robinson Cano on Friday. Alex says the search to find more reliable middle relievers will be the biggest storyline to follow as the regular season comes to a close. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about the AL East and wild card standings. The Indians, after beating up on Chris Sale on Sunday, stand half a game out of a playoff spot entering their series against the Royals this week. The Rangers are now tied with the Rays for the first wild card spot, as they2019ve gone 2-11 in September thus far. The lineup has struggled to score runs this month, and clearly misses Nelson Cruz2019 right-handed power bat. The Pirates added bats to their lineup last month, acquiring Marlon Byrd and Justin Morneau. Both players came up big for the Pirates this weekend, as they remain tied with the Cardinals atop the NL Central. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.

One of the main reasons I chose the title Road to Respect for my book was to emphasize the journey involved in creating a values based, respectful workplace culture. This is not about a quick trip with a speedy arrival at your destination. Aligning your workplace policies, behaviours and practices to reflect the ethical value of respect can take years. That kind of organizational journey requires commitment from senior leadership.
