This episode begins with a look at recent Houston Astro roster moves as the Rule 5 draft approaches. Houston added five top prospects to the team's 40-man roster -- Eric and Craig critique those players to see if any might help the club in 2021. Following that, what do Johann Santana, Marwin Gonzalez and Shane Victorino have in common? All were Rule 5 draft selections - Eric and Craig look at their careers and lament what might have been if only the Astros had protected Santana all those years ago. Next, Robinson Cano has failed another MLB drug test - this one brings a 162-game suspension, a $24 million loss in guaranteed money plus possibly Hall of Fame induction. Wow! This chapter wraps with Eric and Craig asking whether Brian Bolsinger can prove damages at all?Two weeks ago, Eric mentioned in our "Dances With Wolves" segment that he had never seen "The Outlaw Josey Wales." Well, we cured that recently and in Chapter 2, Eric tells us what he thinks about it.In Chapter 3, the college sports scene is a train wreck with games cancelled left and right in football and basketball. Getting two teams in one place to play sometimes looks more like a game of Whack-A-Mole than anything else -- there's a game, not it's not. You get the picture.

This is a cause for celebration, but like lots of Mariner success, it comes with a caveat, as we realize that beating the Blue Jays hurts the Mariners’ tanking efforts. Praise for Matt Magill and the Mariners’ bizarre alchemy this season, which does not include plucking sons and brothers of other famous baseball players. 26:25-41:10: PROSPECT TIME! Julio Rodriguez is taking a flamethrower to the Cal League, and he was not born the last time Seattle made the playoffs. JULIOOOOO and Jarred will also be in the Arizona Fall League this October, which Kate encourages you to attend. With the season winding down and various prospects set to graduate, we project where the Mariners’ big-ticket trio will end up on year-end lists. 41:15-45:00: A brief rant about the bungled Players’ Weekend jerseys. 45:10-55:40: New York Guy is back, baby! He starts by bragging about a correct prediction on the last podcast. New York Guy’s wife is expecting a child, which leads her husband to explain the story of his birth. Kate stokes the flames a bit by asking New York Guy about the Yankees’ inactivity at the trade deadline. 55:45-1:05:00: A comprehensive breakdown of the Mariners’ offseason trades with the New York teams. There is also a theory about James Paxton and air conditioning juice? Alex talks about a busy week in Red Sox spring training inside this edition of "Without a Curse." The Red Sox announced Saturday the team had signed John Farrell to a contract extension through 2017 with a club option for 2018. Though it's understandable that the Red Sox didn't want Farrell managing this season with no job security, Alex says the better move would've been to pick up his option for 2016. At this stage, Farrell's managerial track record is still relatively unproven. Alex also talks about whether Pablo Sandoval's weight is an issue, Farrell's revelation that Shane Victorino will be the Red Sox's starting right fielder and if it's a good thing that Larry Lucchino's role may be marginalized. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex explains why baseball's latest pace of play measures don't go far enough and gives his take on Alex Rodriguez's apology letter (hint: it'll probably be the most noise he makes all season). Alex was ready to lead off the show with a self-congratulary tone, as he wanted to gloat about how he had been calling for the Red Sox to re-sign Stephen Drew since November. But that would’ve been akin to wearing summer colors to a funeral. The Red Sox are in the midst of a 10-game losing streak, and have dropped to nine games below .500 and eight games out of first place. At this rate, Drew’s signing will just be an exercise in futility. The anemic offense got even thinner over the weekend, as Shane Victorino or Mike Napoli were placed on the disabled list. It’s time for Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz – the faces of the franchise – to step up and carry the team for the next week. It’s easy to get carried away with hyperbole when this kind of skid occurs, but Alex believes it’s fair to second-guess the club’s strategy in free agency last winter. For the second consecutive year, the Red Sox refused to sign players to lucrative, market value long-term contracts. They signed A.J. Pierzynski, Grady Sizemore and Edward Mujica to short-term deals, and all three players have struggled mightily. The Red Sox didn’t acquire the necessary reinforcements to safeguard themselves from the regression that most teams face after a championship season. The Red Sox shouldn’t be adverse to handing out long-term contracts; they should be prudent about finding the right players to give those deals to. It’s all about finding the proper fit. Alex recaps the disappointing series against the Blue Jays and Rays, and explains why the Red Sox seem intent on keeping Clay Buchholz in the rotation despite his struggles. The Red Sox embarrassed themselves in the finale of the weekend’s series against the Rays when David Ross jarred at Yunel Escobar for swiping third base in the bottom of the eighth inning with a five-run lead. If the Red Sox don’t want to be “embarrassed,” they shouldn’t put themselves in that situation. Alex takes a closer look at the AL East stands in the “Around the League” segment, and highlights the Blue Jays’ terrific play of late. It seems as if one team in the division is starting to pull away from the pack, which is bad news for the Red Sox. Josh Beckett thew a no-hitter Sunday, much to the dismay of many baseball fans in this region. It ended poorly with Beckett here, but that shouldn’t dilute the fact that this is a praiseworthy turnaround story. What probably did damper Beckett’s no-hitter, however, is the fact that few people in the Los Angeles region could see it. Most cable and satellite providers in southern California refuse to pay the fee that’s required to carry SportsNet LA. The Dodgers have the most lucrative television contract in Major League Baseball history, but nobody can see the team’s games. It’s another example of how this league’s greed has caused it to alienate so many fans. On a positive note, Manny Ramirez is back in professional baseball. The Cubs signed him to be a player-coach for its Triple-A affiliate. Let’s just hope that he can still attend the 2004 reunion Wednesday night. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps a rather disappointing week for the Red Sox. The club dropped two out of three games to the Yankees last week, as Jacoby Ellsbury led the way with a multitude of extra-base hits and stellar defensive plays. It's obvious that the Red Sox were going to miss Ellsbury this year. But the team likely won't miss Ellsbury in the latter years of his seven-year, $153 million contract, which is why Ben Cherington didn't overextend himself for his services last winter. The Red Sox starting pitching and defense has largely been abominable over the last week, which is worrisome. It's almost as if Clay Buchholz and Felix Doubront have served as walking advertisements as to why it's imperative for the Red Sox to retain Jon Lester past this season. Xander Bogaerts' struggles defensively at shortstop shouldn't come as a surprise, because many scouts believed that was the weak point in his game. Still, Bogaerts' misplays at shortstop illustrate that the Red Sox would've been better off signing Stephen Drew to play the position this year. There would've been more than enough at-bats to go around for Bogaerts, Drew and Middlebrooks. Speaking of Middlebrooks, he and Shane Victorino returned to the lineup late last week. At the least, the two players should add some stability to the batting order. The top of the Red Sox lineup has been atrocious this season, as the team's lead-off hitters have gone 20-105. Victorino should help rectify that, and immediately improve the outfield defense. Alex also recaps the series in Toronto over the weekend, and highlights the poor run support Lester has received thus far. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex provides a closer look at the competitive AL East. No team has run away with the division in April, as injuries have seemingly affected every club. Albert Pujols hit his 500th home run last week, and though it didn't receive a lot of media coverage, the Angels have to be pleased that he is healthy and producing this season. There may be hope for that 10-year, $240 million contract after all. Alex was troubled by Royals manager Ned Yost's comments over the weekend about how he thinks relievers should be used. Apparently, he only wants to use closer Greg Holland in tie-games on the road that "matter." Okay, then. Follow Alex on Twitter, @AlexReimer1. Email him at ajreimer0@gmail.com. Dustin Pedroia Injury Could Be Another Blow To Red Sox

TSS:Without A Curse

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2014 62:49

Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps a rather disappointing week for the 5-8 Red Sox. More injury woes may be on the horizon for the hometown team, as Koji Uehara and Dustin Pedroia are both being examined Monday in Boston. Uehara felt stiffness in his shoulder prior to Friday's game, though his long toss session reportedly went well prior to Sunday's contest. It's unsurprising that the 39-year-old Uehara is dealing with a shoulder injury, given that he pitched 88 innings including the post-season last year. Closers are volatile by nature, and the Red Sox signed Edward Mufica this winter to serve as Uehara insurance. Pedroia supposedly suffered a wrist injury during last weekend's home series against the Brewers, and has scuffled at the plate since. The Red Sox don't have a lot of middle infield depth in the organization, so Pedroia's injury could be a devastating blow. Shane Victorino is slated to begin a rehab assignment this week, and Alex says why Jackie Bradley Jr. should be the first man sent to the minor leagues when he returns. Though Bradley's played exceptionally well 2013 both offensively and defensively 2013 he has a less proven track record than Daniel Nava, who also has minor league options remaining. At this stage in the season, it's all about maintaining the most organizational depth. Alex recaps the series win against the Rangers, and series loss to a depleted, injury ravaged Yankees team. Alex tells you why Pin Targate is an uninteresting story, shares his frustrations with instant replay, highlights the incompetence of the top of the lineup and more. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex recaps the past week in the AL East. The Rays are on top of the division alongside the Jays and Yankees, but are dealing with a multitude of injuries of their own. Matt Moore will likely need Tommy John surgery, and Alex Cobb has been placed on the 15-day DL as well. Tuesday is the one-year anniversary of the tragic Marathon bombings. This will be a week of reflection, and a chance to remember just how important the Red Sox are to this city. The club's win in its first home game following the bombings wasn't just important because it was a decisive victory. But it was the first time that fans could be proud of their team in nearly 18 months. Email Alex, ajreimer0@gmail.com and follow him on Twitter, @AlexReimer1. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps a disappointing first week for the defending World Series champions. The highlight of the weekend was the ring ceremony on Friday, which struck the perfect balance between celebration and somber reflection of the Marathon Bombings of last April and the tragic fire in the Back Bay that occurred two weeks ago. The Red Sox's importance to this city is highlighted on days like Friday, as is David Ortiz's superstar status. It's astounding that the people of Boston, an infamously parochial population that scorns most outsiders, have taken the glitzy Ortiz as one of their own. Big Papi, not Marty Walsh, is the city's mayor. Ortiz's calf continues to be an issue on the field, however. The slugger has moved gingerly through the first week of the season, and doesn't appear to be healthy. The Red Sox lineup may not be able to weather an extended absence from Ortiz, given the fact that Shane Victorino and Will Middlebrooks are both on the disabled list. It's difficult for teams to repeat as world champions, and the Red Sox are seeing that firsthand. Seemingly everything went right for the Red Sox in 2013. The Victorino and Middlebrooks injuries are evidence that the club won't benefit from the same kind of luck this season. Alex recaps the first two series of the season against the Orioles and Brewers, and talks about the holes that Victorino's and Middlebrooks' absences leave on the roster. On the positive side of the equation, Jon Lester and John Lackey have pitched well to open up. It seems as if Koji Uehara has picked up right where he left off as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex discusses the AL East standings. The Rays' year is off to a putrid start in terms of attendance, but per usual the team is performing on the field. The Rays inked Chris Archer to a club-friendly six-year contract that could extend to eight years if they exercise their team options. If Archer remains healthy, the contract will be another tremendous cue for the franchise. The Yankees are off to a .500 start, though CC Sabathia has been rocked early on. Mark Teixeira is on the DL, too. Only $67 million to go on that contract! Alex also says why some of Yasiel Puig's immature behavior should be excused, and examines the continued mystery of the physics of pitching. Email Alex, ajreimer0@gmail.com. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex previews the NL East with Chris McShane of the "Amazin' Avenue" Mets blog on SB Nation. Alex and Chris discuss whether Mets fans are optimistic about the club this season, given that the team spent $90 million in free agency and have a plethora of young arms in the system. Though Matt Harvey won't be ready for 2014, he should be recovered for a potential playoff push in 2015. The Phillies continue to operate as if they can eek another season of contention out of their aging core, though Alex and Chris have their doubts if that will be the case. With the losses the Braves underwent in free agency, it seems as if the Nationals may be posed to rebound from a disappointing 2013 and capture the division title for the second time in three years. In terms of Red Sox news from the past week, Alex talks about the Marlins' apparent "outrage" at the "B" lineup the Red Sox put out against them in Grapefruit League action last Thursday, and John Henry's stinging rebuttal on Twitter. Never mind the fact that Jeffrey Loria may not own the Marlins if it wasn't for Henry's complicity in his orchestrated purchase of the team in 2002, after bought the Red Sox in December 2001. Let's not let history get in the way of a good diss, even if Henry's words may now cost the Red Sox an opportunity to acquire Giancarlo Stanton if he's put on the trade market. John Farrell's concerns over the infield defense, the positional battle in center field and Shane Victorino's reported decision to give up pinch-hitting are touched upon as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex shares some reservations he has about MLB's new policy about collisions at home plate. The catcher is now protected, but the runner isn't. Alex announced last week that he'll be a contributor to Glenn Ordway's latest venture, Sports Talk Boston. "The Big Show Unfiltered" launches March 17, and will air weekdays 3-6 p.m. EST. The Red Sox defeated the Cardinals by a score of 6-1 on Wednesday night, and won their first World Series at Fenway Park in 95 years. The 2004 championship was about the fans. Generations of New Englanders had seen their team come up short in big games year after year and decade after the decade. The band of Idiots overcame a 3-0 deficit to the Yankees in the ALCS, and steamrolled the Cardinals in the World Series. The 2007 championship was about validation. Theo Epstein2019s player developmental machine secured 96 victories, and swept the Rockies in the World Series. Dustin Pedroia, Jonathna Papelbon, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester all played vital roles in the championship drive. The Red Sox were the premier organization in baseball. They2019re back at the top of the mountain six years later. The 2013 championship is about redemption. Few players represent that more than John Lackey, who was on the mound for the decisive Game 6. Lackey pitched six and two-third dazzling innings of one-run ball, and tipped his cap to the Fenway Faithful upon leaving the mound. For the first time. Lackey was supposed to be done in this city. But he came back, and deserves all of the credit in the world. David Ortiz put the team on his back in the World Series, and established himself as a Hall of Famer. Role players such as Jonny Gomes, Shane Victorino and David Ross all contributed with big hits in key moments, but this was Ortiz2019s team. Jon Lester became the only Red Sox lefty besides Babe Ruth to win three World Series, and cemented his legacy as one of the best postseason pitchers ever. Lester has a 1.97 ERA in 11 career playoff starts, and a 0.43 ERA in three career World Series starts. This team was supposed to bring respectability back to the Red Sox. Greatness was supposed to come later. But instead, it came instantaneously. The core of Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Lester, Lackey, Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury carried the Red Sox this season. But the championship run could not have happened without significant contributions from Koji Uehara, Mike Napoi, Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes, David Ross, Stephen Drew and Ryan Dempster. John Farrell, though he made some questionable in game decisions this postseason, proved to be the right man for the job. He learned from his mistakes, such as not pinch-hitting for Drew in Game 3 of the ALDS with a lefty on the mound and Xander Bogaerts on the bench or not double switching in Game 3 of the World Series in St. Louis. Farrell has shown a proclivity to adapt. But most importantly, Farrell got the most out of his players this season. He conducts himself like an adult, which puts him miles ahead of the clown who he replaced. The Red Sox are World Series champions just one year after the 69-win disaster of 2012. The greatest turnaround in baseball history is now complete. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.

Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex recaps Games 2, 3 and 4 and previews the rest of the series. The Red Sox beat themselves in Game 2, as the game-winning score on Craig Breslow2019s errant throw to third base. Breslow has been awful in the series, and should no longer pitch in high leverage situations. Game 3 was arguably the craziest ending to a World Series game ever, as no sport fan likes to see a game decided by a technicality (unless it2019s the tuck rule). But though Jim Joyce2019s obstruction call is how the Red Sox lost the game, it2019s not why they lost the game. The game was lost because Jarrod Saltalamacchia decided to launch a throw to third base when he had no chance of getting the base runner. The game was also because John Farrell apparently has no idea what a double switch is, as he had Brandon Workman bat in the top of the ninth of a tie game in the World Series. If Farrell had wanted Workman to pitch in the bottom of the ninth, he should2019ve subbed out Saltalamacchia for Ross in the bottom of the eighth, and had the pitcher and catcher2019s spots flipped in the order (Saltalamacchia had struck out to end the top of the eighth 2026SURPRISE, SURPRISE). What2019s even weirder, though, is that Farrell removed Workman after he allowed a bloop single to Yadier Molina in the ninth. So if Farrell was going to go to Koji Uehara in the inning anyway, he should2019ve had Mike Napoli pinch-hit for Workman in the top of the frame and then removed him once the bottom of the ninth came around. The decision to let Workman bat while Napoli sat on the bench was inexcusable, and hardly confidence inducing. Farrell has had a shoddy postseason. One of Farrell2019s crutches has been keeping Jonny Gomes in the starting lineup even though he2019s slumping. It2019s ironic, then, that Gomes was the hero on the one night he almost sat. Gomes was inserted into the lineup 90 minutes before Game 4, as Shane Victorino was scratched because of a bad back. After an impassioned speech from David Ortiz prior to the inning, Gomes launched a three-run homer off Cardinals reliever Seth Maness. The Red Sox have had a knack this postseason for coming up big when one would least expect it, and Gomes fit that bill on Sunday night. Clay Buchholz battled through four gritty innings of one-run ball, and is deserving of an apology from every sports talk radio caller out there. The notion that professional baseball players ask out of World Series games because they 201Cdon2019t want it201D is asinine. Maybe Buchholz2019s severely diminished velocity on Sunday will finally convince people that he2019s actually hurt. Felix Doubront picked up Buchholz, and tossed two and two-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen. It2019s amazing that he said he 201Cwasn2019t comfortable201D in a bullpen role just one month ago. John Lackey pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief, and Koji Uehara nailed down his sixth save of the playoffs in the ninth inning. Uehara picked off pinch-runner Kolten Wong to end the game, leaving the tying run, Carlos Beltran, at the plate. Games 5, 6 and possibly 7 should be terrific. This is what it2019s all about. The Red Sox are going to the World Series. The most historic turnaround in modern baseball history is almost complete. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex recaps Games 5 and 6 of the ALCS against the Tigers and previews the World Series match-up against the Cardinals. Alex talks about the Red Sox2019s patience at the plate, and how that was one of the major keys of the series. Max Scherzer was dominant in Games 2 and 6, but had to exit his starts early because of high pitch counts. The Tigers mediocre bullpen was incapable of protecting leads in both contests, and that was the series right there. Few players embody that patience more than Xander Bogaerts, who walked twice in Game 6. Bogaerts2019 walk in the seventh inning chased Scherzer from the game on Saturday night, and led to Shane Victorino2019s series-winning grand slam. Victorino had been 2-23 in the series prior to smashing that grand slam off reliever Jose Veras. He has embodied the heart and soul of this team all season, and it isn2019t just because Fenway Park sings Bob Marley2019s 201CThree Little Birds201D in unison every time he comes to the plate. It2019s because he2019s a damn good player. So good, in fact, he led all right fielders in WAR this season. Koji Uehara won ALCS MVP honors after tossing six scoreless innings against the Tigers. The Red Sox2019s bullpen was fantastic, as Craig Breslow has yet to allow a run this postseason. Junichi Tazawa owned Miguel Cabrera, which was arguably the biggest match-up advantage of the series as well. The Red Sox proved to be a better team than the Tigers, as they are deeper and more complete. The Tigers flaws, such as a bad bullpen and atrocious base running, proved to be too much for them to overcome. Add in the fact that Fielder was a corpse (0 RBI in the playoffs) and Cabrera wasn2019t himself (.250 batting average in the playoffs), and it2019s easy to see why the Tigers struggled to score runs in the series. Though the Cardinals aren2019t as star-studded as the Tigers, they2019re a better team. They finished with the best record in the National League, and don2019t have a gaping hole on their roster. Allen Craig will likely be back in the lineup as well, which should give the Cardinals an offensive boost. Alex says the key to the series is to beat both Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn in Games 3 and 4. If the Red Sox can split against Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha while beating both of them, they should be in pretty good shape. This is the seventh time the Red Sox or Cardinals will play in the World Series over the past 10 years, and a rematch of 2004. The Cardinals are an excellent organization, as 17 of the 25 players on their NLCS roster were homegrown. But the Red Sox, though they2019ve taken their lumps, have proven to be an excellent organization too. It should be a great series. The Red Sox are going to the ALCS for the first time since 2008 after beating the Rays in four games in the ALDS. Alex recaps games three and four at Tropicana Field, which included everything from questionable managerial decisions to catwalk interference. The Rays won game three on a walk-off home run from back-up catcher Jose Lobaton, who only entered the game as a defensive replacement because Joe Maddon lost the DH spot in the lineup when he had Matt Joyce replace Wil Myers in right field in the eighth inning. Lobaton homered off Koji Uehara, who hadn2019t allowed a home run since June 30. With left-hander Jake McGee on the mound and two men on in the top of the eigth inning, Farrell opted to not pinch-hit for neither Jarrod Saltalamacchia nor Stephen Drew. Alex questions those moves, especially because Farrell pinch-ran for David Ortiz in the inning. If a manager takes his best hitter of the lineup, he2019s playing to win the game right then and there. Thus, he should play the match-ups. The curious decisions to have Clay Buchholz pitch to Evan Longoria with first base open in the fifth inning, and summoning Brandon Workman instead of Uehara in the eighth inning are talked about as well. Like they2019ve done all season, though, the Red Sox came back from a disappointing loss in game three and won game four. They were shutout through the first six innings, but took the lead in the seventh inning after a wild pitch and Shane Victorino infield single to shortstop. Alex discusses the resiliency of the Red Sox, and game four demonstrated the value of Jacoby Ellsbury and Victorino to the bullpen. The bullpen was dominant, too, throwing three and one-third innings of shutout ball while striking out seven batters. Craig Breslow struck out the first four batters he faced. Amidst all of the hubbub about the Red Sox bullpen2019s performance and Maddon2019s self-aggrandizing (sorry, 201Cinnovative201D) managerial style in game four, it easy to forget about Jake Peavy2019s solid performance. Peavy tossed five and two-third innings of one-run ball, and should2019ve shut up the Jose Iglesias apologists for good. The Tigers and A2019s play game five of their series Thursday night, with the winner coming to Fenway Park to begin the ALCS on Saturday. Both teams would represent formidable opponents for the Red Sox, but Alex says he2019d rather see the Tigers. Though they look better on paper than the A2019s do, they appear to be more vulnerable. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about the upcoming NLCS, between the Dodgers and Cardinals, and says Braves manager Freddi Gonzalez should be on the hottest of hot seats after having closer Craig Kimbrel watch Juan Uribe2019s game-leading home run in the eighth inning on Sunday from the bullpen. At least Kimbrel will be rested for next April. (Shockingly, catcher Brian McCann didn2019t try to stop the Dodgers celebration after their win.) Joe Girardi2019s well-deserved managerial extension with the Yankees is discussed too. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.

Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex speaks with Red Sox reporter Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald. Alex and Scott discuss Clay Buchholz' rehab, and what the Red Sox are expecting to see from him in his next two starts. Buchholz won't be counted on to be an ace when he returns to the rotation in early September, but will be expected to be pitch like an ace at the end of the month. If the Red Sox are to be make a deep postseason run, Buchholz has to be a factor at the top of the rotation. Koji Uehara has been a godsend at the end of the bullpen, but the Red Sox have struggled getting the ball to him as of late. Alex and Scott talk about the thin middle relief core, and whether Ben Cherington should've been more aggressive in his attempts to acquire a veteran reliever in July and August. Dustin Pedroia's and Mike Napoli's recent hot streaks, Xander Bogaerts' usage and expectations for Jacoby Ellsbury in September are talked about as well. Alex recaps the first two games against the Orioles, and says Pedroia's and Napoli's improved performances may be the team's panacea for its struggles against left-handed pitching. Shane Victorino had seven RBI in the win on Tuesday night, and has been a force from the right-handed batter's box. He should never attempt to bat left-handed again ... seriously. The other members of the starting rotation have more than held up their end of the bargain in Buchholz' absence, and have shown why the Red Sox should be considered a legitimate World Series contender. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex takes a look at the AL East standings, as the Rays now trail the Red Sox by two and a half games (even though its only one game in the loss column). Matt Harvey has a partial tear in his UCL, and will likely need Tommy John surgery. The most unfortunate thing about the story is that it doesn't seem as if the Mets could've prevented it. Sometimes, this kind of stuff just happens. Speaking of "stuff just happening," how did the Astros make $99 million in profit this season with the worst record and lowest payroll in baseball? It doesn't look good at all, regardless of whether or not the Astros have a respectable long-term plan. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. On Memorial Day, the Red Sox stand at 31-20 and lead the AL East. They took three of four games from Terry Francona's Cleveland Indians over the weekend, and the series was highlighted by two exceptional walk-off wins on Saturday and Sunday. One of the focal points of the offseason was to re-emphasize plate discipline, and those efforts were put on display with the lengthy at-bats the Red Sox had in the four run 9th inning on Sunday. In addition to the offense coming alive late on Saturday and Sunday, John Lackey dominated headlines this weekend, as he threw another gem on Friday. Statistically speaking, Lackey may actually be the best pitcher on the Red Sox staff. And no, that is not hyperbole. The Red Sox made two significant roster moves over the weekend, placing both Will Middlebrooks and Shane Victorino on the DL. Alex discusses the potential long-term implications of their injuries, and which one of Alfredo Aceves and Jose Iglesias may be on the roster for the long haul. Many conversations that have occurred over the past 18 months about this ownership group and the organizational hierarchy were revisited with Francona's return to Fenway this weekend. Alex Speier of WEEI.com penned a three part series on the dynamics of ownership that ran this weekend, and Alex talks about some of the most pertinent questions that the piece attempted to address. One of the conclusions Alex developed from the series is that the bulk of the blame for the past several years of ill-advised decisions may fall on the shoulders of CEO Larry Lucchino. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, where the Orioles and Rays continue to cost themselves wins in the month of May. The Phillies are coming to Boston this week, and Alex talks about the organizational crossroads they find themselves in. Speaking of crossroads, the Dodgers continue to debate how to proceed with manager Don Mattingly. Though if fired, Mattingly would be the scapegoat, Alex says it is the only change the Dodgers can make in-season, and thus it is the change they have to make. In this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps the Red Sox' past three games against the A's, in which they won two out of three games. Alex talks about Mike Napoli's hot hitting, as he leads the club with 26 RBI and is five shy of the Red Sox April record for RBI. Though Napoli isn't playing like he has a degenerative hip condition, don't let the conspiracy theorists fool you ... he does. The Red Sox didn't exaggerate his medical condition to get a better deal on his contract. If they did, Napoli surely would've signed elsewhere. Alex also discusses the atrocious performance from Alfredo Aceves on Tuesday, and his well earned demotion to the minor leagues. Aceves still had an option remaining on his contract, so the Red Sox didn't have to release him if they didn't want to. And in a lot of ways, demoting Aceves to the minor leagues at this stage in his career is more demeaning than simply designating him for assignment. While Aceves was demoted to the minor leagues, Daniel Bard was called up this week. But has Bard been called up too early? The lowly Astros are coming to Fenway this weekend, and Alex says it represents a perfect opportunity for the Red Sox to rest some regulars who may need it (David Ortiz and Shane Victorino) as well as get some needed innings out of the starting rotation. Plus, will John Lackey make his return? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the AL East standings, and disappointing starts for the Blue Jays, Angels and Dodgers. The three teams stole headlines in the offseason, but are examples that the game may be moving further away from building a team through free agency and acquiring players towards the end of their primes. Alex speaks with Maury Brown, president of the Business of Sports Network. Alex and Maury discuss the environment of last week's Winter Meetings, and how big of an impact the uncontrolled spending of the Dodgers has had on the baseball landscape over the past several months. If the Dodgers truly have no spending ceiling, then how much will they fuel this seeming era of disparity in baseball? Also, have the Dodgers spent money wisely over the past several months? Alex and Maury also talk about the free agent market, and the continued rising cost of free agent talent. Is there such a thing as a "good" free agent contract anymore? How should teams approach free agency? The permanency of the Yankees' self-imposed salary cap, the perception of the Red Sox's latest spending free and the relevancy of baseball's declining national television ratings are talked about too. Alex gives his own analysis on the Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino signings, and talks about whether the acquisitions reveal anything about the team's long-term plan. The Red Sox have spent more than $120 million this offseason. Has it all been spent on glue?
