In the Kevin Millar interview we talk the 2003 team and how they don't get nearly enough credit for being an absolute wagon, how hilarious it was when Millar threw out the first pitch before a Sox playoff game when he was still playing for another team at the time, what his favorite bar around Fenway was, a hilarious bar story involving him and some of the other players on the '03 team, recapping the day he hit a bomb in a charity game a few years back, and the difficulties of being tight with the players but also knowing when you need to be critical about them on TV. After the Millar interview we continue discussing that Astros series, Jared meeting the Chavis family and Justin Verlander, Steve finally clearing the air with Guerin Austin at Baseball Tavern, Koji Uehara retiring and how much we loved him, give examples of how JBJ can get back to being good at hit, and wrap it all up with your phenomenal Down in the DM questions. Starting things off with baseball with the White Sox officially entering a rebuilding and getting hauls for Adam Eaton and Chris Sale. The surprising thing is Chicago might have gotten a better haul for Eaton. Who else is on the trading block? Pops maintains he was right when the Sox should have traded Sale two years ago, Blair still maintains that's not right. The Cubs seemed to have hit one of the park trading Jorge Soler, who fell out of regular at bats, for Wade Davis. What do we make of the pen situation now with Koji Uehara and Brian Duensing being added to the pen. What will Epstein and the brain trust do at the five spot in the rotation? Will the Cubs' luck run out when it comes to health? We come back to West Lafayette with the football hiring Jeff Brohm. Is there room for cautious optimism or is this similar to the Darrell Hazell hiring? Purdue basketball got their first win against Notre Dame in the Crossroads Classic and their only notable non-conference win. What does it mean for Matt Painter's team? What do we make of the top of the Big Ten? Isaac Haas played only three minutes in the second half of the Notre Dame game, what does that mean going forward? We talk some college football with a Wake Forest radio announcer giving out plays. Louisville was the big name mentioned, which Bobby Petrino has denied. No one is talking about the other schools though; Virginia Tech. The biggest story is the situation in Minnesota. Several players were suspended and it seems like there wasn't a lot of communication. There were accusations, no punishments, threats of scholarships being stripped and the team sitting out in protest. The whole situation has gotten really messy. Video has come out for what happened with Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon. Bob Stoops is getting a lot of criticism, but does he deserve it all? And of course we talk college football and take a closer look at Lane Kiffin and why he didn't go to Houston. And how does he end up at Florida Atlantic? Do we blame Houston for trying to lock Kiffin in to a contract? Will Willie Taggert succeed in Oregon? We take a look at the NFL with the playoffs coming up fast. Each week we talk football it seems like there are several games that make no seasone (Tenn winning at KC and Indy blowing out Minnesota). Who wins the AFC West? The Texans pulled Osweiler and no one seems to want to win the AFC South or North, so who are the three and four seeds? In the NFC does New York catch Dallas for the division. If not, do the Cowboys get knocked off in the playoffs? Detroit seems to be floundering, can Green Bay catch them? Are we buying the Falcons in a close NFC South 13 games in to the season? Pops wants to address rumors of Bill Polian to be the president of football operations, mistake? It's ridiculous that there are rumors after two seasons that the Bears could be blowing up the staff again. Todd McShay has four running backs in the first round in his early mock draft, problem? In our last segment we vent because 'We Got Beef.' Pops sounds off on Jeff Fisher who is massively overrated and is out 'for revenge' now after being mediocre and fleecing the organization for his contract. Blair's beef has to do with Aqib Talib. There was a dirty hit in the Titans and Broncos game. Talib has the audacity to sound off on someone going after someone's knees yet poked someone in the eye last season, on purpose!

With the second half of the season now fully underway, it seems as if the Red Sox have their team for the stretch run: Drew Pomeranz will likely be their biggest acquisition and John Farrell will almost certainly remain as manager. Are they good enough? The Pomeranz trade is exactly the kind of deal Dave Dombrowski was brought here to make. But after giving up Anderson Espnioza, he better be right. Dombrowski can't afford a whiff. With the rash of injuries to the bullpen –– Craig Kimbrel and Koji Uehara are both on the disabled list –– Farrell's in-game management will be a key for the rest of the season as well. Red Sox fans should have little confidence in his ability to manage the pen. Hopefully this pulverizing offense continues to bail the team out.

The Red Sox just completed a disappointing road trip with a couple of wretched losses, but there's no reason to panic yet. The American League East appears to be just as mediocre as advertised, so the Red Sox are still in the thick of the race. It will probably take a lot for this team to bury itself – that's for sure. But there are causes for concern – especially the bullpen. Though the starting rotation has the highest ERA in the league, Alex says all five starters should be able to keep the Red Sox competitive. The same can't be said for the bullpen. With Koji Uehara's struggles, the only reliable reliever is Junichi Tazawa, There just seems to be a lack of arms there. Though free agency doesn’t begin until Tuesday at midnight, the Red Sox have already been busy this offseason. The club re-signed Koji Uehara to a two-year, $18 million deal Thursday. There is reason to believe that Uehara can still be an elite reliever as he nears 40 years of age. But for whatever reason, Alex feels uneasy about the move. In the wake of Madison Bumgarner’s one-run, 21-inning performance in the World Series, Alex reexamines the question about whether or not the Red Sox need to acquire an elite starting pitcher this winter. Championship teams may not need an “ace,” but they need someone who can pitch like one. Alex goes over the biggest takeaways from the World Series in the “Around the League” segment, and attempts to explain how the Giants have won three championships in five years. It’s been a remarkable run, but not quite a dynasty. Game 7 drew a 15.6 overnight rating, and the World Series averaged a 9.1 rating overall. Those numbers say baseball doesn’t have a popularity problem, but it does have a demographic one. Email Alex, ajreimer0@gmail.com, and follow him on Twitter, @AlexReimer1. Alex recaps the Red Sox’s past two series against the Yankees and Blue Jays inside this edition of “Without a Curse,” and outlines some storylines fans should have their eyes on as the season comes to a close. Koji Uehara’s status remains in limbo, as Red Sox manager John Farrell announced Friday he would be removed from the closers role on an interim basis. Alex says the Red Sox should shut him down for the rest of September if they intend to re-sign him this winter, and attempt to preserve what’s left of his right arm. Mookie Betts is on a tear, and seems to have moved ahead of Jackie Bradley Jr. on the organizational depth chart. But his greatest value to the team may be as a trade chip, considering the positions he plays. Will Middlebrook’s apparent unwillingness to play in winter ball, Xander Bogaerts’ hot September and Yoenis Cespedes’ elite production in the middle of the lineup is discussed, too. Alex lambasts the season-long Derek Jeter retirement ceremony in the “Around the League” segment, and says the Captain Intangibles legend is now dead. If Jeter is as much of a “winner” as the sycophantic media says he is, then he would’ve removed himself from the top of the lineup long ago. Alex recaps the past week in Red Sox baseball, and sifts through which players are worth watching in the final month of the regular season inside this edition of “Without a Curse.” The hometown team took two of three games from the Jays and Rays over the last seven days, as Clay Buchholz tossed two gems. Unfortunately for him, Koji Uehara gave the lead Monday night in what has been his only appearance over the last week. The intent behind Rays infielder Logan Forsythe’s elbow to Dustin Pedroia’s head, Buchholz’s enigmatic couple of weeks and the Rays’ insistence on perverting baseball (it will make sense once you listen) are discussed as well. Arguably the most exciting portion of the week for the Red Sox involved Cuban defector Rusney Castillo, who played in his first game in more than a year Saturday. The club’s principal owner John Henry said the Red Sox’s inability to land Jose Abreu prompted their aggressive pursuit of Castillo, which is predictable but slightly unsettling to hear. Alex analyzes the AL East standings in the “Around the League” segment, and also gives his take on the Athletics’ wretched performance since the team acquired Jon Lester. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps a rather disappointing week for the 5-8 Red Sox. More injury woes may be on the horizon for the hometown team, as Koji Uehara and Dustin Pedroia are both being examined Monday in Boston. Uehara felt stiffness in his shoulder prior to Friday's game, though his long toss session reportedly went well prior to Sunday's contest. It's unsurprising that the 39-year-old Uehara is dealing with a shoulder injury, given that he pitched 88 innings including the post-season last year. Closers are volatile by nature, and the Red Sox signed Edward Mufica this winter to serve as Uehara insurance. Pedroia supposedly suffered a wrist injury during last weekend's home series against the Brewers, and has scuffled at the plate since. The Red Sox don't have a lot of middle infield depth in the organization, so Pedroia's injury could be a devastating blow. Shane Victorino is slated to begin a rehab assignment this week, and Alex says why Jackie Bradley Jr. should be the first man sent to the minor leagues when he returns. Though Bradley's played exceptionally well 2013 both offensively and defensively 2013 he has a less proven track record than Daniel Nava, who also has minor league options remaining. At this stage in the season, it's all about maintaining the most organizational depth. Alex recaps the series win against the Rangers, and series loss to a depleted, injury ravaged Yankees team. Alex tells you why Pin Targate is an uninteresting story, shares his frustrations with instant replay, highlights the incompetence of the top of the lineup and more. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex recaps the past week in the AL East. The Rays are on top of the division alongside the Jays and Yankees, but are dealing with a multitude of injuries of their own. Matt Moore will likely need Tommy John surgery, and Alex Cobb has been placed on the 15-day DL as well. Tuesday is the one-year anniversary of the tragic Marathon bombings. This will be a week of reflection, and a chance to remember just how important the Red Sox are to this city. The club's win in its first home game following the bombings wasn't just important because it was a decisive victory. But it was the first time that fans could be proud of their team in nearly 18 months. Email Alex, ajreimer0@gmail.com and follow him on Twitter, @AlexReimer1. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps a disappointing first week for the defending World Series champions. The highlight of the weekend was the ring ceremony on Friday, which struck the perfect balance between celebration and somber reflection of the Marathon Bombings of last April and the tragic fire in the Back Bay that occurred two weeks ago. The Red Sox's importance to this city is highlighted on days like Friday, as is David Ortiz's superstar status. It's astounding that the people of Boston, an infamously parochial population that scorns most outsiders, have taken the glitzy Ortiz as one of their own. Big Papi, not Marty Walsh, is the city's mayor. Ortiz's calf continues to be an issue on the field, however. The slugger has moved gingerly through the first week of the season, and doesn't appear to be healthy. The Red Sox lineup may not be able to weather an extended absence from Ortiz, given the fact that Shane Victorino and Will Middlebrooks are both on the disabled list. It's difficult for teams to repeat as world champions, and the Red Sox are seeing that firsthand. Seemingly everything went right for the Red Sox in 2013. The Victorino and Middlebrooks injuries are evidence that the club won't benefit from the same kind of luck this season. Alex recaps the first two series of the season against the Orioles and Brewers, and talks about the holes that Victorino's and Middlebrooks' absences leave on the roster. On the positive side of the equation, Jon Lester and John Lackey have pitched well to open up. It seems as if Koji Uehara has picked up right where he left off as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex discusses the AL East standings. The Rays' year is off to a putrid start in terms of attendance, but per usual the team is performing on the field. The Rays inked Chris Archer to a club-friendly six-year contract that could extend to eight years if they exercise their team options. If Archer remains healthy, the contract will be another tremendous cue for the franchise. The Yankees are off to a .500 start, though CC Sabathia has been rocked early on. Mark Teixeira is on the DL, too. Only $67 million to go on that contract! Alex also says why some of Yasiel Puig's immature behavior should be excused, and examines the continued mystery of the physics of pitching. Email Alex, ajreimer0@gmail.com. The Red Sox defeated the Cardinals by a score of 6-1 on Wednesday night, and won their first World Series at Fenway Park in 95 years. The 2004 championship was about the fans. Generations of New Englanders had seen their team come up short in big games year after year and decade after the decade. The band of Idiots overcame a 3-0 deficit to the Yankees in the ALCS, and steamrolled the Cardinals in the World Series. The 2007 championship was about validation. Theo Epstein2019s player developmental machine secured 96 victories, and swept the Rockies in the World Series. Dustin Pedroia, Jonathna Papelbon, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester all played vital roles in the championship drive. The Red Sox were the premier organization in baseball. They2019re back at the top of the mountain six years later. The 2013 championship is about redemption. Few players represent that more than John Lackey, who was on the mound for the decisive Game 6. Lackey pitched six and two-third dazzling innings of one-run ball, and tipped his cap to the Fenway Faithful upon leaving the mound. For the first time. Lackey was supposed to be done in this city. But he came back, and deserves all of the credit in the world. David Ortiz put the team on his back in the World Series, and established himself as a Hall of Famer. Role players such as Jonny Gomes, Shane Victorino and David Ross all contributed with big hits in key moments, but this was Ortiz2019s team. Jon Lester became the only Red Sox lefty besides Babe Ruth to win three World Series, and cemented his legacy as one of the best postseason pitchers ever. Lester has a 1.97 ERA in 11 career playoff starts, and a 0.43 ERA in three career World Series starts. This team was supposed to bring respectability back to the Red Sox. Greatness was supposed to come later. But instead, it came instantaneously. The core of Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Lester, Lackey, Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury carried the Red Sox this season. But the championship run could not have happened without significant contributions from Koji Uehara, Mike Napoi, Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes, David Ross, Stephen Drew and Ryan Dempster. John Farrell, though he made some questionable in game decisions this postseason, proved to be the right man for the job. He learned from his mistakes, such as not pinch-hitting for Drew in Game 3 of the ALDS with a lefty on the mound and Xander Bogaerts on the bench or not double switching in Game 3 of the World Series in St. Louis. Farrell has shown a proclivity to adapt. But most importantly, Farrell got the most out of his players this season. He conducts himself like an adult, which puts him miles ahead of the clown who he replaced. The Red Sox are World Series champions just one year after the 69-win disaster of 2012. The greatest turnaround in baseball history is now complete. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.

The World Series is tied up at two games a piece, as a full team effort lifted the Red Sox over the Cardinals in Game 4. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex recaps Games 2, 3 and 4 and previews the rest of the series. The Red Sox beat themselves in Game 2, as the game-winning score on Craig Breslow2019s errant throw to third base. Breslow has been awful in the series, and should no longer pitch in high leverage situations. Game 3 was arguably the craziest ending to a World Series game ever, as no sport fan likes to see a game decided by a technicality (unless it2019s the tuck rule). But though Jim Joyce2019s obstruction call is how the Red Sox lost the game, it2019s not why they lost the game. The game was lost because Jarrod Saltalamacchia decided to launch a throw to third base when he had no chance of getting the base runner. The game was also because John Farrell apparently has no idea what a double switch is, as he had Brandon Workman bat in the top of the ninth of a tie game in the World Series. If Farrell had wanted Workman to pitch in the bottom of the ninth, he should2019ve subbed out Saltalamacchia for Ross in the bottom of the eighth, and had the pitcher and catcher2019s spots flipped in the order (Saltalamacchia had struck out to end the top of the eighth 2026SURPRISE, SURPRISE). What2019s even weirder, though, is that Farrell removed Workman after he allowed a bloop single to Yadier Molina in the ninth. So if Farrell was going to go to Koji Uehara in the inning anyway, he should2019ve had Mike Napoli pinch-hit for Workman in the top of the frame and then removed him once the bottom of the ninth came around. The decision to let Workman bat while Napoli sat on the bench was inexcusable, and hardly confidence inducing. Farrell has had a shoddy postseason. One of Farrell2019s crutches has been keeping Jonny Gomes in the starting lineup even though he2019s slumping. It2019s ironic, then, that Gomes was the hero on the one night he almost sat. Gomes was inserted into the lineup 90 minutes before Game 4, as Shane Victorino was scratched because of a bad back. After an impassioned speech from David Ortiz prior to the inning, Gomes launched a three-run homer off Cardinals reliever Seth Maness. The Red Sox have had a knack this postseason for coming up big when one would least expect it, and Gomes fit that bill on Sunday night. Clay Buchholz battled through four gritty innings of one-run ball, and is deserving of an apology from every sports talk radio caller out there. The notion that professional baseball players ask out of World Series games because they 201Cdon2019t want it201D is asinine. Maybe Buchholz2019s severely diminished velocity on Sunday will finally convince people that he2019s actually hurt. Felix Doubront picked up Buchholz, and tossed two and two-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen. It2019s amazing that he said he 201Cwasn2019t comfortable201D in a bullpen role just one month ago. John Lackey pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief, and Koji Uehara nailed down his sixth save of the playoffs in the ninth inning. Uehara picked off pinch-runner Kolten Wong to end the game, leaving the tying run, Carlos Beltran, at the plate. Games 5, 6 and possibly 7 should be terrific. This is what it2019s all about. The Red Sox are going to the World Series. The most historic turnaround in modern baseball history is almost complete. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex recaps Games 5 and 6 of the ALCS against the Tigers and previews the World Series match-up against the Cardinals. Alex talks about the Red Sox2019s patience at the plate, and how that was one of the major keys of the series. Max Scherzer was dominant in Games 2 and 6, but had to exit his starts early because of high pitch counts. The Tigers mediocre bullpen was incapable of protecting leads in both contests, and that was the series right there. Few players embody that patience more than Xander Bogaerts, who walked twice in Game 6. Bogaerts2019 walk in the seventh inning chased Scherzer from the game on Saturday night, and led to Shane Victorino2019s series-winning grand slam. Victorino had been 2-23 in the series prior to smashing that grand slam off reliever Jose Veras. He has embodied the heart and soul of this team all season, and it isn2019t just because Fenway Park sings Bob Marley2019s 201CThree Little Birds201D in unison every time he comes to the plate. It2019s because he2019s a damn good player. So good, in fact, he led all right fielders in WAR this season. Koji Uehara won ALCS MVP honors after tossing six scoreless innings against the Tigers. The Red Sox2019s bullpen was fantastic, as Craig Breslow has yet to allow a run this postseason. Junichi Tazawa owned Miguel Cabrera, which was arguably the biggest match-up advantage of the series as well. The Red Sox proved to be a better team than the Tigers, as they are deeper and more complete. The Tigers flaws, such as a bad bullpen and atrocious base running, proved to be too much for them to overcome. Add in the fact that Fielder was a corpse (0 RBI in the playoffs) and Cabrera wasn2019t himself (.250 batting average in the playoffs), and it2019s easy to see why the Tigers struggled to score runs in the series. Though the Cardinals aren2019t as star-studded as the Tigers, they2019re a better team. They finished with the best record in the National League, and don2019t have a gaping hole on their roster. Allen Craig will likely be back in the lineup as well, which should give the Cardinals an offensive boost. Alex says the key to the series is to beat both Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn in Games 3 and 4. If the Red Sox can split against Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha while beating both of them, they should be in pretty good shape. This is the seventh time the Red Sox or Cardinals will play in the World Series over the past 10 years, and a rematch of 2004. The Cardinals are an excellent organization, as 17 of the 25 players on their NLCS roster were homegrown. But the Red Sox, though they2019ve taken their lumps, have proven to be an excellent organization too. It should be a great series. Oct. 13, 2013 will forever be known as the day in which Boston sports flashed back to 2004. Tom Brady led a 70-yard drive to propel the Patriots to victory in the afternoon, and David Ortiz hit a grand slam that defied all of the odds to lead the Red Sox to victory on Sunday night. This is the Golden Age of Boston Sports. Fans should appreciate what they get to see on a weekly basis, because it isn2019t going to last forever. The Red Sox had been no-hit through five innings for the second consecutive game on Sunday. Anibal Sanchez struck out 12 batters in Game 1, and Max Scherzer fanned 13 men in Game 2. It looked bleak, especially with Justin Verlander scheduled to start in Game 3. But then the Red Sox exposed the soft underbelly of the Tigers middle relief core. They loaded the bases in the eighth inning, and set the table for Ortiz to smash a game-tying grand slam off closer Joaquin Benoit. Defensive miscues cost the Tigers in the bottom of the ninth, as Jose Iglesias airmailed a through the first base (HAHAHA), which allowed Jonny Gomes to advance to second base. Gomes scored on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia ground ball that advanced past the outstretched Iglesias on the left side of the infield (HAHAHA). Red Sox relievers combined to throw three and one-third scoreless innings in relief of Clay Buchholz on Sunday, and didn2019t let the game get out of hand. Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa haven2019t allowed a run this postseason, as the bridge to Koji Uehara no longer appears to be a concern. Tigers starting pitchers have only allowed one run over the past 23 innings. Verlander will be opposed by John Lackey in Game 3, who has a 3.83 career ERA at Comerica Park. It will be a tall task for the Red Sox in Game 3, but it is no longer a must-win contest thanks to their heroics in Game 2. The Red Sox have a favorable pitching match-up in Game 4, as Jake Peavy will take on Doug Fister. Though Sanchez and Scherzer were dominant in Games 1 and 2, neither pitcher reached the eighth inning. This relentless Red Sox lineup grinds pitchers down, and will almost always reach a team2019s bullpen. Even if Verlander is terrific in Game 3, it is unlikely he2019ll pitch into the eighth or ninth inning. If the game is close, the Red Sox will have a chance. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about the NLCS, and explains why the Cardinals continue to show why they2019re one of the best organizations in baseball. The Red Sox are going to the ALCS for the first time since 2008 after beating the Rays in four games in the ALDS. Alex recaps games three and four at Tropicana Field, which included everything from questionable managerial decisions to catwalk interference. The Rays won game three on a walk-off home run from back-up catcher Jose Lobaton, who only entered the game as a defensive replacement because Joe Maddon lost the DH spot in the lineup when he had Matt Joyce replace Wil Myers in right field in the eighth inning. Lobaton homered off Koji Uehara, who hadn2019t allowed a home run since June 30. With left-hander Jake McGee on the mound and two men on in the top of the eigth inning, Farrell opted to not pinch-hit for neither Jarrod Saltalamacchia nor Stephen Drew. Alex questions those moves, especially because Farrell pinch-ran for David Ortiz in the inning. If a manager takes his best hitter of the lineup, he2019s playing to win the game right then and there. Thus, he should play the match-ups. The curious decisions to have Clay Buchholz pitch to Evan Longoria with first base open in the fifth inning, and summoning Brandon Workman instead of Uehara in the eighth inning are talked about as well. Like they2019ve done all season, though, the Red Sox came back from a disappointing loss in game three and won game four. They were shutout through the first six innings, but took the lead in the seventh inning after a wild pitch and Shane Victorino infield single to shortstop. Alex discusses the resiliency of the Red Sox, and game four demonstrated the value of Jacoby Ellsbury and Victorino to the bullpen. The bullpen was dominant, too, throwing three and one-third innings of shutout ball while striking out seven batters. Craig Breslow struck out the first four batters he faced. Amidst all of the hubbub about the Red Sox bullpen2019s performance and Maddon2019s self-aggrandizing (sorry, 201Cinnovative201D) managerial style in game four, it easy to forget about Jake Peavy2019s solid performance. Peavy tossed five and two-third innings of one-run ball, and should2019ve shut up the Jose Iglesias apologists for good. The Tigers and A2019s play game five of their series Thursday night, with the winner coming to Fenway Park to begin the ALCS on Saturday. Both teams would represent formidable opponents for the Red Sox, but Alex says he2019d rather see the Tigers. Though they look better on paper than the A2019s do, they appear to be more vulnerable. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about the upcoming NLCS, between the Dodgers and Cardinals, and says Braves manager Freddi Gonzalez should be on the hottest of hot seats after having closer Craig Kimbrel watch Juan Uribe2019s game-leading home run in the eighth inning on Sunday from the bullpen. At least Kimbrel will be rested for next April. (Shockingly, catcher Brian McCann didn2019t try to stop the Dodgers celebration after their win.) The Red Sox2019s magic number to clinch a playoff berth is down to one game, meaning they will clinch at some point over the next four games at home. It2019s been a historical turnaround for the worst to first Red Sox, and Alex takes a look at what can be attributed to their success this season. Though improved team character has played a role, talent is the biggest reason why the Red Sox are on the cusp of a 100-win season. Playing up the beards, and downplaying the ability level of this team is a disservice to them. John Farrell revealed this week he2019s decided on a playoff starter for game one of a playoff series. Jon Lester is slated to pitch on the last day of the regular season, and would be in line to pitch game one on regular rest. Lester, who has a 2.38 ERA in the second half, has earned the opportunity. Alex recaps the first two games against the Orioles, both of which were close losses. Koji Uehara gave his up first run since June 26 on Tuesday night, as his streak of 37 consecutive retired batters came to an end. Despite the rare blown save on Tuesday, there are no questions about Uehara entering the postseason. There remain questions about the middle relief core; however, which is why Craig Breslow getting out of a high-leverage jam (two in scoring position and nobody out) in the eighth inning was such a positive development. Breslow had a .75 ERA since the All Star Break entering Wednesday2019s game. Jacoby Ellsbury2019s status remains unclear, as he said he2019ll 201Chopefully be back by the end [of the regular season]201D to the media on Wednesday. Though it2019s almost certain Ellsbury will return for the playoffs, it is uncertain what kind of player he will be. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex talks about the scorching hot Red Sox, who swept the Yankees and eliminated them from divisional contention this weekend. This weekend was Mariano Rivera2019s final career trip to Fenway Park, and the Red Sox held a touching ceremony to commemorate Rivera2019s career prior to Sunday night2019s game. The Red Sox presented Rivera with a variety of gifts, including a portrait of his reaction when he was cheered at opening day in 2005. Arguably the most striking thing about the ceremony, though, is how far the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry has fallen in recent years. Dustin Pedroia has never faced Rivera in a playoff series, for example. Alex spends a lot of time talking about this weekend2019s slate of games, including another thrilling victory on Friday night. It2019s fun to talk about the team2019s improved chemistry (beards and all) as the main explanation for this season2019s historic turnaround, but the club2019s deep lineup and propensity to have good at-bats is the biggest reason for the plethora of come-from-behind, and thrilling wins. Jon Lester dominated on Saturday afternoon, and looks as if he is ready to be the starter in game one of a playoff series. Clay Buchholz looked shaky on Sunday night, so Lester may be the guy who gets the ball. Koji Uehara continues to be unworldly, as he2019s retired a club record 37 consecutive batters. However, the bridge to Uehara remains shaky, as Craig Breslow surrendered a game-tying two-run double to Robinson Cano on Friday. Alex says the search to find more reliable middle relievers will be the biggest storyline to follow as the regular season comes to a close. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about the AL East and wild card standings. The Indians, after beating up on Chris Sale on Sunday, stand half a game out of a playoff spot entering their series against the Royals this week. The Rangers are now tied with the Rays for the first wild card spot, as they2019ve gone 2-11 in September thus far. The lineup has struggled to score runs this month, and clearly misses Nelson Cruz2019 right-handed power bat. The Pirates added bats to their lineup last month, acquiring Marlon Byrd and Justin Morneau. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex talks about the Red Sox expanding their lead in the AL East to a whopping nine and a half games after taking the first two games from the Rays this week. Clay Buchholz looked as good as anybody could have expected him to look on Tuesday night, as he tossed five innings of shutout ball. But arguably more importantly, his stuff looked good. Buchholz looked awfully similar to the ace caliber pitcher we saw in the first two months of the season, which bodes well for the Red Sox as they head into October. Koji Uehara continues to dominate, as he2019s retired a franchise record 34 consecutive batters (that2019s a perfect game AND THEN SOME). Though there is little left to say about Uehara2019s unworldly performance, Alex tries to put what he2019s done into words. The bridge to Uehara remains shaky; however, as Brandon Workman surrendered two runs in Wednesday night2019s win. With a playoff birth essentially locked up, the Red Sox should spend the rest of the regular season trying out an abundance of pitchers in the latter innings. They need to figure out who else besides Uehara, Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa factors into the bullpen in the postseason. Despite Workman2019s poor performance, the Red Sox still came away with the win on Wednesday after Mike Carp2019s pinch-hit grand slam. The resiliency of this team continues to amaze, as does their ability to consistently have good at-bats. In the 201CAround the League201D segment. Alex takes a look at the increasingly close American League wild card standings. Because the Rays have struggled in September, four teams are within striking distance of the second wild card spot. Even the Yankees, who the Red Sox slaughtered last weekend, are still in the thick of the race. Alex previews this weekend2019s Red Sox and Yankees series at Fenway Park, and talks about the AL playoff picture as a whole. The Rangers are in the midst of another September slide, and though the Indians are not, nobody is showing up to watch them anyway. The Red Sox slaughtered the Yankees in New York this weekend, expanding their lead to seven and a half games in the AL East. They2019re a lock for the postseason, and are legitimate a World Series contender as there is in all of baseball. Alex recaps the four games against the Yankees, including the thrilling victory on Thursday night. Though it wasn2019t the best win of the season, it was one of the more rewarding ones. The Red Sox came back from a five-run deficit to win on Friday night, which speaks to the team2019s resiliency and the ability of this lineup. They grind out at-bats, and never give away at-bats. The Red Sox are recreating the magic they had in 2003 and 2004 because they2019re recreating the offensive approach they had in that time period. Though there are mostly positives to take from this weekend2019s slate of games, there are a couple of negatives. Alex talks about the problems with the middle relief core, and the importance of finding reliable arms next to Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa who can bridge to Koji Uehara at the end of games. Arguably the biggest negative, however, is the uncertain status of Jacoby Ellsbury. A foot fracture promises to keep Ellsbury out for at least a week, as the Red Sox hope he can return prior to the postseason. If the Red Sox are to make a World Series run this season, Ellsbury has to be at the top of the lineup. Clay Buchholz will make his return to the rotation this week, and will aim to get back to form over the next three weeks. With the division essentially locked up, Buchholz2019 progress becomes the most interesting storyline as the regular season comes to a close. Alex and Scott discuss Clay Buchholz' rehab, and what the Red Sox are expecting to see from him in his next two starts. Buchholz won't be counted on to be an ace when he returns to the rotation in early September, but will be expected to be pitch like an ace at the end of the month. If the Red Sox are to be make a deep postseason run, Buchholz has to be a factor at the top of the rotation. Koji Uehara has been a godsend at the end of the bullpen, but the Red Sox have struggled getting the ball to him as of late. Alex and Scott talk about the thin middle relief core, and whether Ben Cherington should've been more aggressive in his attempts to acquire a veteran reliever in July and August. Dustin Pedroia's and Mike Napoli's recent hot streaks, Xander Bogaerts' usage and expectations for Jacoby Ellsbury in September are talked about as well. Alex recaps the first two games against the Orioles, and says Pedroia's and Napoli's improved performances may be the team's panacea for its struggles against left-handed pitching. Shane Victorino had seven RBI in the win on Tuesday night, and has been a force from the right-handed batter's box. He should never attempt to bat left-handed again ... seriously. The other members of the starting rotation have more than held up their end of the bargain in Buchholz' absence, and have shown why the Red Sox should be considered a legitimate World Series contender. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex takes a look at the AL East standings, as the Rays now trail the Red Sox by two and a half games (even though its only one game in the loss column). Matt Harvey has a partial tear in his UCL, and will likely need Tommy John surgery. The most unfortunate thing about the story is that it doesn't seem as if the Mets could've prevented it. Sometimes, this kind of stuff just happens. Speaking of "stuff just happening," how did the Astros make $99 million in profit this season with the worst record and lowest payroll in baseball? It doesn't look good at all, regardless of whether or not the Astros have a respectable long-term plan. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. There will be no "Without a Curse" on Monday. The next show will be published next Thursday, September 5. Enjoy your Labor Day! (Alex will be moving back to school this weekend to begin his junior year in college. Let that scary thought sink in for a moment.)

Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex looks back at last year's blockbuster trade between the Red Sox and Dodgers as the two clubs prepare to face each other this weekend. Though it is debatable which team is better right now, Alex says it is not debatable which team is in better shape for the future. The Red Sox, with their financial flexibility and top farm system appear to be on the cusp of a prolonged stretch of championship contention. The Dodgers fate, meanwhile, will rest on the aching shoulders of Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and other overpaid, aging stars who are past their primes. The Dodgers bailed the Red Sox out last year, and the Red Sox are still reaping the benefits from it today. Alex also talks about the Red Sox series against the Giants, in which they won two out of three games. Xander Bogaerts made his big league debut on Tuesday, and may struggle to find playing time outside of spelling Stephen Drew against left-handed pitchers. The Red Sox have seemed to make the determination that Bogaerts' developed would be aided by being up with the big league club regardless of how often he plays. Though the Red Sox had two impressive victories on Monday and Wednesday, their loss on Tuesday remains one of the worst of the season. John Farrell opted to insert Brayan Villareal, he of the 20.77 ERA and 7.4 BB/9 ratio, into the ninth inning of a tie game with the bases loaded because he was holding out Koji Uehara for a save situation. Unfortunately, that save situation never arose, because Villarreal walked in the game winning run. Ironically, Farrell said he pulled Franklin Morales in the ninth inning because of an "uncertainty of strikes." So, he put in the only guy less likely than Morales to throw strikes. Makes perfect sense. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the AL East standings, where the Red Sox have regained their lead over the Rays. More chapters have been written in the Alex Rodriguez saga, as he is now preparing a malpractice suit against the Yankees team doctor. A-Rod seems to want to force the Yankees to settle with him so he can collect as much of the $86 million remaining on his contract as possible. If it wasn't about the money, he would've told his legal team to stop talking to the press long ago. The only contract worse than A-Rod's may be Albert Pujols', as he has been lost for the season with a foot injury. It seems as if another long term free agency contract has turned out to be a disaster. Only eight years left! Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.

Jon Lester May Not Be As Good As We Think He Is

The Red Sox took two of three games from the Rays this week, winning their fourth consecutive series. Alex takes a look back at the epic (not really) 14 inning win on Monday night, and how the resiliency of this Red Sox team was on full display yet again. They retook the lead twice in extra innings, which should be commended. There were some negative stories to come out of Monday's game, though, including the struggles of closer Andrew Bailey. Outside of the grossly overused Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa, the bullpen has been in-flux this season. John Lackey hit Matt Joyce on the back in the 6th inning of Monday's game, and the benches cleared. Following the game, Joe Maddon called Lackey a "bad teammate" for hitting Joyce. So according to Maddon, only his players are allowed to hit batters? Got it. Following the 14 inning game on Monday, the Red Sox needed Jon Lester to give them innings on Tuesday night and he couldn't do it. Alex cites the mediocrity of Lester's last 10 outings, and asks whether Lester isn't as good as we think he is. Alfredo Aceves of all people came up big with a quality start on Wednesday night. Should we give the Red Sox credit for not releasing Aceves earlier this season like we all wanted them to? With Lester's struggles and Clay Buchholz' status up in the air, it seems as if the Red Sox may need Aceves more than we might have thought. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the AL East standings, and gives his take on the brawl involving the Dodgers and Diamondbacks this week. Though entertaining, the brawl in isolation will not ignite the Dodgers. The players need to play better for the Dodgers to go on a long winning streak, it's as simple as that. The intangibles attached to the aftermath of a brawl are irrelevant. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
