Important Events May 10, 1589 Today is the anniversary of the burial of the English author, translator, and Clerk to the Kitchen of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Leonard Mascall - who was buried at Buckinghamshire. Mascall published several books; all were aimed at household management. In 1572 Leonardpublished A Booke of the Arte and Maner Howe to Plante and Graffe All Sortes of Trees. Along with cultivating fruit trees, this book was the first to refer to the secateurs or a pruning knife. The word secateurs is taken from the Latin secare, ‘to cut.’ Mascall's last book was published a year after he died, and it was called The Booke of Engines and Traps. In it, Leonard shared 34 traps and nine recipes for poison bates, most of which were dedicated to trapping mice. But Leonard also wrote about how to control slugs and snails in the garden - he described picking them off by hand early in the morning. While I was researching Leonard Mascall, I came across a bit of his advice regarding the placement of tender trees and shrubs from The Guardian (www.theguardian.com), Dec 9, 1891: "Leonard Mascall said, 'Most part of trees do love the sun at noon, and yet the south wind is very contrary against their nature, and specially the almond tree, the apricot, the mulberry, the fig tree, the pomegranate tree.' A gardener remarked: 'I am sure there is much in this. It is quite certain that all Japanese trees like shade and a north aspect; and the finest most fruitful old mulberry tree that I have ever seen is at Rochester, growing in a corner where it looks to the north and east, and is thoroughly protected from the south and west.'" May 10, 1725 Today is the birthday of the botanist, famous professor, and founder of one of the leading botanical gardens in Europe — John Hope. Alive during the Scottish enlightenment, John left his mark on the royal botanic gardens, plant classification, and plant physiology. He was appointed as the King's botanist for Scotland and superintendent of the Royal Garden in Edinburgh. John worked to expand the space of the Royal Botanic Garden, and he turned it into a place for research. During John’s lifetime, Edinburgh was THE place to study medicine, and all medical students had to take botany courses. John created a school for botanists after spinning off the materia medica (pharmacy) department of the school, which allowed him to specialize exclusively in botany. John’s students traveled to Edinburgh from all over the world. All in, John taught over 1,700 students during his tenure — and they included the likes of James Edward Smith (the founder and first President of the Linnaean Society), Charles Drayton (the future Lt. Governor of South Carolina), Benjamin Rush (a signer of the Declaration of Independence and founder of Dickinson College), and Archibald Menzies, who became the Scottish botanist and explorer. By all accounts, John was a captivating instructor. He was one of the first two people to teach the Linnaean system. John also taught the natural system. And, he pioneered the use of big teaching diagrams or visual aids to teach his lectures. A field botanist, John encouraged his students to go out and investigate the Flora of Scotland, and he awarded a medal every year to the student who collected the best herbarium. With John's accomplishments came impressive wealth. When John died, he had amassed more than £12,000, which he had left for his wife. Today the genus Hopea is named after John Hope. And, there’s a magnificent beech tree that grows near the John Hope Gateway at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. Unearthed Words You cannot have too many aconites. They cost, as I said before, about fifty shillings a thousand. A thousand will make a brave splash of color, which lasts a month. If you can afford ten thousand, you are mad not to buy them. There are so many exciting places you can put them. . . in the hollow of a felled tree, by the border of a pond, in a circle round a statue, or immediately under your window, so that you can press your nose against the glass when it is too cold to go out, and stare at them, and remember that spring is on its way. ― Beverley Nichols, Down the Garden Path Grow That Garden Library My Wild Garden by Meir Shalev This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Notes from a Writer's Eden. In this charmingly illustrated book, Meir shares his garden that lies on the perimeter of Israel’s Jezreel Valley, with the Carmel mountains rising up in the west. Meir’s garden is “neither neatly organized nor well kept,” and he adores his lemon tree, figs, and rescuing plants like a purple snapdragon from the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv highway. Mitch Ginsburg of The Times of Israel wrote this after reading Meir’s book: “I went to sleep every night with the smell of fresh figs and lemons and the sound of birdsong in my ears and the image of Shalev’s beloved black cat, Kramer, the hero of many of his Hebrew children’s stories, sleeping the day away beneath the buckthorn tree.” Meir’s book starts out with a little story about the time he awoke to find a wedding party trampling his garden as they posed for photos. After the group insisted his garden couldn’t possibly be a real garden, he let them know they had three minutes before the sprinkler system turned on. Clever man. They left. He didn’t have a sprinkler system. This book is full of stories like this, and they feature marvelous topics like lupines, cyclamen, poppies, sea squill, a mole rat, a wasp nest, and compost - just to name a few. This book is 304 pages of garden bliss from a novelist who shares his garden with wit and love. You can get a copy of My Wild Garden by Meir Shalev and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $21 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart It's the birthday of scientist Cecelia Payne who discovered while still in graduate school that stars are made largely of the two lightest chemical elements – hydrogen and helium; she was born in 1900. And Celia decided her fate when she was just eight years old - that’s when she decided to become a scientist. She had been walking in an orchard when she suddenly recognized a plant she had heard her mother describe – the plant that looks like a bumble: the bee orchid. Later she recalled her excitement at seeing the plant the first time: “For the first time I knew the leaping of the heart, the sudden enlightenment, that were to become my passion… These moments are rare, and they come without warning, on ‘days to be marked with a white stone’.” And it is Cecelia Payne who said these wonderful quotes: “An admission of ignorance may well be a step to a new discovery.” And then this one (which harkened back to Payne's discovery of the bee orchid). “The reward of the young scientist is the emotional thrill of being the first person in the history of the world to see something or understand something.” Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
Hot off the heels of his Rotogravure album release, Ringo Starr was knee-deep in a promotional blitz across Europe and Asia in the fall of 1976. Of course Ringo still made time during this flurry of interviews to send buddy John Lennon a gift for the former Beatle's 36th birthday - a gift in the form of a private erotic poetry reading by New York City porn & punk personality Cherry Vanilla. In the following weeks, another gift to Lennon - a functional green card - facilitated a solo trip to Hong Kong (John's first solitary travel experience since his pre-fame days). With John on walkabout in Asia, Paul McCartney and Wings found themselves back in the UK for the finale of their year+ long WINGS OVER THE WORLD tour - playing sold-out shows in Wembley in front of cheering crowds and glowing critics. As Paul's tour wound to a close, George Harrison's promotional tour for his forthcoming album release was just ramping up - beginning with the release of a new single: This Song. This bouncy rocker poked fun at Harrison's ongoing copyright troubles over the song My Sweet Lord, and seethes with resentment under the veneer of humor (reminiscent of "Harri-songs" past such as Piggies and Not Guilty). With stops in Boston and then New York City for a pre-taped appearance on NBC's Saturday Night, George was out to give his upcoming Thirty Three & 1/3 LP a full-court press, for a return to the successes from earlier in his solo career, and a real run at the charts... Listen on Apple, Google, Spotify, and other platforms. Dr. John Dobak currently serves as the CEO of Dermtech, a biotechnology company creating a new category of medicine - precision dermatology. DermTech is in the business of transforming the way doctors perform skin exams. Its smart sticker technology - an adhesive tab that collects skin cells - allows dermatologists to run genomic tests looking for skin cancer. Dr. Dobak found himself in San Diego when he started med school at UCSD while in pursuit of a life-long goal of becoming a surgeon. When working towards his postdoc at UCLA, he interned at a local hospital, where he received a grant for a cardiac catheter that froze tissues to treat arrhythmias. Upon completion of his internship, he raised his first venture round for what became Cryocor. Cryocor was Dr. Dobak’s first startup, and it led to his work at INNERCOOL, which employed hypothermia to cool blood in order to protect the brain and heart during injuries. Unfortunately, INNERCOOL could not achieve the proper clinical data, so the company was sold to Phillips. Next up, he worked at a company that treated eye problems with a technology that additionally had dermatological applications. This is how he was introduced to Gary Jacobs, who just happened to work at DermTech. At this time, DermTech sold clinical trials services to dermatology companies, but consumer feedback indicated a need for skin analysis technology. With John’s expertise, the company quickly pivoted towards its current technology - adhesive skin patches. With lots of trial and error, the product has reached a 95-to-97% success rate in sample collection vs. the original 30%. While not technically a founder, Dr. Dobak helped build the company up from scratch. First with the help of angels and then institutional investors, DermTech went public. Listen in to hear what John has to say about the adapting biotech space in San Diego and how DermTech continues to capitalize on it. A few weeks ago, John Lee Dumas and I had a conversation about his new book, The Common Path to Uncommon Success: A Roadmap to Financial Freedom and Fulfillment, and we’ve both been blown away by the response. I got a huge number of comments, emails, and responses, and John got more emails after our podcast than any other he’s ever recorded. One of the questions I was asked was simply, “What are the 17 steps to uncommon success?” With John’s book still weeks away from release, I asked him if he’d be willing to pull back the curtain and share ALL of these steps with the Miracle Morning Community - and he was gracious enough to say, “Yes, let’s do it!” Today, John returns to the podcast for the second time in less than 30 days—something I’ve never done before—to share all 17 steps to uncommon success, with my added insights and commentary. KEY TAKEAWAYS How a single quote (from Albert Einstein) transformed John Lee Dumas’ life more between the ages of 32 and 41 than he did in his first three decades on Earth. The life-changing power of the ripple effect. John’s 17 steps to achieve Uncommon Success (taken from 3,000+ interviews). How John was able to get the BEST person to interview for each step. How you can apply each step to create your own path to uncommon success. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the First Week of Lent Lectionary: 225All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is St. Polycarp of SmyrnaOn Feb. 23, the Catholic Church remembers the life and martyrdom of St. Polycarp, a disciple of the apostle and evangelist St. John. Polycarp is celebrated on the same date by Eastern Orthodox Christians, who also honor him as a Saint.Polycarp is known to later generations primarily through the account of his martyrdom, rather than by a formal biography. However, it can be determined from that account that he was born around the year 69 AD. From the testimony he gave to his persecutors stating he had served Christ for 86 years it is clear that he was either raised as a Christian, or became one in his youth.Growing up among the Greek-speaking Christians of the Roman Empire, Polycarp received the teachings and recollections of individuals who had seen and known Jesus during his earthly life. This important connection between Jesus' first disciples and apostles and their respective students served to protect the Catholic Church against the influence of heresy during its earliest days, particularly against early attempts to deny Jesus' bodily incarnation and full humanity.Polycarp's most significant teacher, with whom he studied personally, was St. John whose contributions to the Bible included not only the clearest indication of Jesus' eternal divinity, but also the strongest assertions of the human nature he assumed on behalf of mankind. By contrast, certain tendencies had already emerged among the first Christians to deny the reality of Jesus' literal suffering, death, and resurrection, regarding them as mere "symbols" of highly abstract ideas. With John's help, Polycarp may have been the one who compiled, edited, and published the New TestamentAnother Catholic teacher of the second century, St. Irenaeus, wrote that Polycarp "was not only instructed by apostles, and conversed with many who had seen Christ; but he was also, by apostles, appointed bishop of the Church in Smyrna." In a surviving letter that he wrote to the Philippians, he reminded that Church which had also received the teaching of St. Paul not to surrender their faith to the "gnostic" teachers claiming to teach a more intellectually refined gospel."For every one who shall not confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is antichrist," he wrote citing St. John himself "and whosoever shall not confess the testimony of the Cross, is of the devil; and whosoever shall pervert the oracles of the Lord to his own lusts and say that there is neither resurrection nor judgment, that man is the firstborn of Satan.""Let us therefore, without ceasing, hold fast by our hope and by the pledge of our righteousness," Polycarp taught as he went on to explain that both hope and righteousness depended upon "Jesus Christ, who took up our sins in His own body upon the cross." With eloquence and clarity, he reminded the Philippian Church that Christ, "for our sakes, endured all things so that we might live in him."However, Polycarp's most eloquent testimony to his faith in Jesus came not through his words, but through his martyrdom, described in another early Christian work. The Church of Smyrna, in present-day Turkey, compiled their recollections of their bishop's death at the hands of public authorities in a letter to another local church."We have written to you, brethren, as to what relates to the martyrs, and especially to the blessed Polycarp" who, in the words of the Catholics of Smyrna, "put an end to the persecution having, as it were, set a seal upon it by his martyrdom."Around the year 155, Polycarp became aware that government authorities were on the lookout for him, seeking to stamp out the Catholic Church's claim of obeying a higher authority than the Emperor. He retreated to a country house and occupied himself with constant prayer, before receiving a vision of his death that prompted him to inform his friends: "I must be burned alive." He changed locations, but was betrayed by a young man who knew his whereabouts and confessed under torture. He was captured on a Saturday evening by two public officials, who urged him to submit to the state demands. "What harm is there," one asked, "in saying, 'Caesar is Lord,' and in sacrificing to him, with the other ceremonies observed on such occasions, so as to make sure of safety?""I shall not do as you advise me," he answered. Outraged by his response, the officials had him violently thrown from their chariot and taken to an arena for execution. Entering the stadium, the bishop along with some of his companions, who survived to tell of it heard a heavenly voice, saying: "Be strong, and show yourself a man, O Polycarp!"Before the crowd, the Roman proconsul demanded again that he worship the emperor."Hear me declare with boldness, I am a Christian," the bishop said. "And if you wish to learn what the doctrines of Christianity are, appoint me a day, and you shall hear them.""You threaten me with fire," he continued "which burns for an hour, and after a little is extinguished. But you are ignorant of the fire of the coming judgment and of eternal punishment, reserved for the ungodly.""But," he challenged the proconsul, "what are you waiting for? Bring forth what you will."Although the crowds clamored for Polycarp to be devoured by beasts, it was decided he should be burned alive, just as he had prophesied. He prayed aloud to God: "May I be accepted this day before you as an acceptable sacrifice -- just as you, the ever-truthful God, have foreordained, revealed beforehand to me, and now have fulfilled."What happened next struck Polycarp's companions with amazement; they recorded the sight in the letter that they circulated after Polycarp's death."As the flame blazed forth in great fury," they wrote, "we to whom it was given to witness it, beheld a great miracle." The fire did not seem to touch the bishop's body. Rather, as they described, "shaping itself into the form of an arch, itencompassed as by a circle the body of the martyr. And he appeared within not like flesh which is burnt, but as bread that is baked, or as gold and silver glowing in a furnace.""Moreover, we perceived such a sweet odour coming from the flames as if frankincense or some such precious spices had been burning there."The executioners perceived that Polycarp's death was not going as planned. Losing patience, they ordered him to be stabbed to death. From the resulting wound, "there came forth a dove, and a great quantity of blood, so that the fire was extinguished."The crowd, as the Christian witnesses recalled, were understandably amazed."All the people marveled," they wrote, "that there should be such a difference between the unbelievers and the elect." Polycarp, they proclaimed, had been among that elect "having in our own times been an apostolic and prophetic teacher, and bishop of the Catholic Church which is in Smyrna."St. Polycarp has been venerated as a Saint since his death in 155. John LaForge is the Co-Director with NukeWatch and is currently working and advocating in Hamburg, Germany. Nukewatch has been working for a nuclear-free future since 1979, they bring critical attention to the locations, movements, dangers, and the politics of nuclear weapons and radioactive wastes. The US is the only government that deploys nuclear weapons in other countries. US B61 nuclear gravity bombs are deployed in Holland (20), Italy (40), Belgium (20) Turkey (50-90), and Germany (20). Currently, The United States provides about 60 tactical B61 nuclear bombs for use by Germany under a NATO nuclear weapons sharing agreement. The bombs are stored at Büchel Air Base and in time of war would be delivered by Luftwaffe Panavia Tornado warplanes. Many countries believe this violates Articles I and II of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), where Germany has committed: which states "... not to receive the transfer from any transferor whatsoever of nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices or of control over such weapons or explosive devices directly, or indirectly ... or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices ...". With John we talk about Germany and the US relationship with nuclear weapons, differences in direct actions between the two countries, the goals of the Peace delegation they hold every year, if Germany is making itself a target by having these nuclear weapons, and the relationship Germany has with other NATO countries.
