In this episode, I sit down with my longtime friend and doula, and author of Mothershift, Jessie Harrold, to talk about the big identity shifts that come with these life stages. Whether it's a quiet walk or just taking a deep breath, these simple shifts can help us embrace change instead of fighting it. The transition into motherhood reshapes not just our roles, but our very beings. In this episode, Gervase Kolmos sits down with Jessi Harold, author of Mothershift, to explore the transformative journey known as matrescence. Jessi shares her insights on how becoming a mother can be both a radical shift and a rite of passage filled with growth, challenges, and deep self-discovery. Together, they discuss the complexities of identity shifts, societal expectations, and the importance of holding space for both the beauty and the struggle of parenting. Keep listening as Gervase and Jessie cover the balance between rejecting and emulating our own upbringing, explore how motherhood pushes us to hold paradoxes and embrace nuance, and discuss how it transforms not only how we parent but also how we grow as individuals. What you'll learn: The meaning and transformative power of matrescense The importance of holding complexity and paradox in motherhood The need for and challenges of finding community and support in modern motherhood How your upbringing can leave you swinging between breaking cycles and repeating them Why self-compassion is a must in the matrescence journey The value of finding balance and what's right for you in motherhood versus societal norms Connect with Jessi Harrold Instagram | @jessie.es.harrold: Website | https://www.jessieharrold.com/ New! In today's episode, I am joined by Jessie Harrold, a coach, doula and author of ‘Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage'. A couple of years ago, I followed Jessie's course by the same name and it held me deeply in the depths of my postpartum identity shift. Back in June 2023, I interviewed matrescence expert Jessie Harrold on Bound + Determined, and she shared with raw vulnerability how hard it was to land her book deal. She talked about the timing, the road blocks, the shots in the dark she took, and what ultimately got her the publishing deal that is now launching Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage. I still get emails several times a month from people who have stumbled upon that episode (#91) and are grateful for it. They tell me it was helpful to hear that for some people, this process is challenging and not what they'd imagined--that resilience and perseverance are necessary traits to bringing this dream to life. So it felt right to bring Jessie back on the show, as she is weeks away from launching Mothershift, to hear what the rest of her process was like.

Today we're going beyond the birth plan to talk about birth principles! Although a well-crafted birth plan can be a powerful tool, more often than not they're formulaic, and outcome-focused nature can give a false illusion of control, and even elicit eye rolls from jaded caregivers. Jessie Harrold shares with Adriana how your efforts may be better spent on first crafting your own set of birth principles.Sponsor offers - TIME SENSITIVE! Today I talk with doula, coach and mother, Jessie Harrold. Jessie is passionate about navigating the transition into motherhood with trust and confidence. Jessie talks to the experience of both losing and finding ourselves in motherhood, and how bounce-back culture overlooks the hard work of navigating huge identity shifts. She shares what happens after the first 40 days of motherhood, how to reorient our lives around newly defined values and priorities as parents, and ways to make sense of pivotal moments. We dive into the shifts that occur in our relationships, and how we can take responsibility for creating our place of belonging in our communities. Jessie shares her work supporting mothers to lean into the liminal nature of postpartum, understanding it as a slow yet profound process of stepping into our motherhood identity, with all the meaning, joy and grief that comes along with it. She encourages new mothers to ask themselves, at many points along the journey ‘who am I now'? And to continue asking questions of ourselves as we become, and continue to evolve, as mothers. In our first episode on matrescence, we talked about continuing to carry a love for nature and time outside into pregnancy as we prepare for the major life change of becoming a parent. This episode continues into the next phase in the process, when the much-anticipated birth is over, and we step into this new role and all that it entails, indoors and out. From the tender early days of the fourth trimester, to integrating the outdoors into your little one's lives as they grow, the postpartum phase of matrescence is a complex period of healing, care-giving, bonding, learning and un-learning. It's a time that can simultaneously hold grief and ambivalence, and profound joy — all in the same hand.In this episode, we'll hear from Rukmini Halliwell and Rachel Barrett again, speaking about the early days with their children Zen and Lola, who are now 21 months and 9 months old, respectively. And we'll also be joined by Jessie Harrold, a coach and a doula who supports women through various rites of passage, including that of matresence. This conversation is another tender one for me. I find as I'm navigating these initial months of motherhood (and in the absence of being able to have lots of community come over to my house), I'm having the essential conversations here on the podcast. The wonderful Jessie Harrold joins me in this episode to talk about major life transitions and the skills we need to traverse change. Jessie is a coach, women's mentor, and doula who has been supporting women through radical life transformations and other rites of passage for over a decade. She works one-on-one with women and mothers, facilitates mentorship programs, women’s circles and rituals, and hosts retreats and wilderness quests. Together we talk about "arriving" at motherhood as an identity, how major life transitions (like motherhood and loss of a family member) make painfully clear that we as a society don't know how to show up for each other, the skills we need to learn as a society to traverse change better, learning how to ask for community care and learning how to extend care without being asked, the tension that can arise in asking for and navigating community care, nonlinear reciprocity, practices around major life transitions, and the invitation to create new culture. It's the space in between. It's the not who you used to be, and not quite who you will be yet. It's the darkness and the opportunity. And as my guest in this episode describes it: it's the liminal space in motherhood.Jessie Harrold is a couch, doula and author. She has been working with women for more than a decade, supporting them through the rites of passage of womanhood - especially motherhood. As she outlines in this interview, there is a sacred space for a woman when she becomes a mother that must be deeply respected and honoured - and if we don't hold that for her, she will feel lonely, unsure, and lost.So how do we safely move through this time? How can you honour your own uncertain moments in motherhood? This is a beautiful insight into the rituals and support we all need in matrescence. You can read more about Jessie's work here. And if you'd like to learn more about how to support women through matrescence, register here for the Mama Rising training coming up early September.

In this episode of Yoga|Birth|Babies, I speak with writer, women’s mentor, doula and founder of MotherSHIFT, Jessie Harrold about embodying the rite of passage into motherhood. Jessie helps guide women through the transition into parenthood through her program MotherSHIFT. She thoughtfully explores this massive identity shift and helps you makes sense of the you are now; mother, partner, person. In our discussion Jessie offers solid insight to these gates of transition and listeners will walk away with solid tools to help navigate this maze like experience. Jessie Harrold is a women’s mentor, wilderness quest guide, doula, and author of the book Project Body Love: my quest to love my body and the surprising truth I found instead. We talk about Jessie's quest to reclaim her identity after her big dream of becoming a doctor didn't pan out, how she has since carved out work of real meaning, and how she has learnt to be in her body.
In today's episode I'm talking to my hometown gal, Jessie Harrold. Jessie is a writer, women's mentor, coach and doula. She holds degrees in Neuroscience and Health Promotion, and her qualitative, story-based research on women’s experiences navigating health and well-being has won multiple awards and been published internationally. Project Body Love is the story of her quest to find acceptance, respect, and maybe even love for her body after spending a lifetime counting calories and drops of sweat. What followed was a two-year series of experiments that had her mining the depths of her past, dismantling the effects of Diet Culture on her self-worth, taking up bellydancing, posing for nude photographs, and other daring feats of self-exploration. In this episode we discuss: What it means to love your body. Cool things you body can do. Health at every size and intuitive eating. Being a fat person in a thin-obsessed world Why Health is a value. The surprising truth she found on her quest to love her body. Today we are going to go beyond the birth plan to talk about birth principles. Although a well crafted birth plan can be a powerful tool, more often than not their formulaic, and outcome-focused nature can give a false illusion of control, and elicit eye rolls from jaded caregivers. The truth is, your efforts may be better spent on first crafting your own set of birth principles. Jessie Harrold explains why. Check it out! Hello Couragemakers! This week on The Couragemakers Podcast, I'm thrilled to be chatting to previous guest Jessie Harrold! Jessie is an author, women's mentor, coach and doula. She does what she likes to call “women's work,” which means she helps women bring their babies earthside, creates community and holds brave spaces for women to find themselves in, helps women reconnect with their bodies and the earth, and offers up a dose of word medicine wherever she can. The thread that weaves all of this work together is Jessie's unwavering commitment to helping women and mothers unearth and reclaim their connection to themselves, their power, and their sovereignty. Jessie lives in an oceanside cottage with her little family, and is currently celebrating the release of her first book, Project Body Love: my quest to love my body and the surprising truth I found instead. It would be easier to share with you what we didn't talk about during our conversation, as we covered so much ground. We dive into changing identities and rites of passage and the grief that can often accompany it, finding spaces online and offline to support you, why group wisdom is so important, the importance and scarcity of deep listening and building communities. Jessie shares the story behind her book and her own creative process and Jessie's answer to the one thing she would share with the world sends a shiver down my spine. I love Jessie's philosophy and I have so much admiration for the work she does. If you're in the mood for honest talk, creative inspiration and want a big reminder that you're doing just fine, I know you're going to love this episode! So settle in and enjoy the show!
