Best Pick with John Dorney, Jessica Regan and Tom Salinsky Episode 317. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Released 30 April 2025 Today we watched two contrasting episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. We kicked off with an episode from the fifth season, the celebratory romp Trials and Tribble-ations in which the 24th century crew revisits the action of the classic original series episode The Trouble with Tribbles. Pretty much all the senior writing staff had a go at this one. The story is credited to Ira Steven Behr, Hans Beimler and Robert Hewitt Wolfe and the teleplay to Ronald D Moore and René Echevarria. It was directed by Jonathan West, and it was first shown on 4 November 1996. We followed this up with In the Pale Moonlight from towards the end of the sixth season, airing on 15 April 1998. The story is by Peter Allan Fields and the screenplay is credited to Michael Taylor, although Ronald D Moore heavily rewrote it. It was directed by Victor Lobl and it earned the full five stars from me (in fact, both episodes did). These and hundreds more episodes are covered in the second volume of my Star Trek chronicle which is now available from all the usual places, including… From the publisher https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Star-Trek-Discovering-the-TV-Series-Hardback/p/51781 UK Amazon https://amzn.to/4lzI1hN US Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Discovering-Voyager-1993-1999/dp/1399034995 UK bookstore https://www.waterstones.com/book/star-trek-discovering-the-tv-series/tom-salinsky/9781399034999 US bookstore https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/star-trek-tom-salinsky/1146305492?ean=9781399034999 To send in your questions, comments, thoughts and ideas, you can join our Facebook group, find us on BlueSky https://bsky.app/profile/bestpickpod.bsky.social or email us on bestpickpod@gmail.com. Originally released on the 27th of May 2015!!!  (The original episode contained) In episode 20 of the podcast we catch up with what each other has been watching and/or listening to since last we recorded.  Liam tells of his experiences in America. Next we look at the connections between some of the lost classic Doctor Who serials and a landfill in a New Mexico desert (audio segements came from ATARI: Game Over, a documentary made in 2014).  I reference some facts that The Tin-Dog Podcast's host Michael, has made in some of his past podcasts (I don't know which one, but I'm sure they exist). Once we hit the news, Liam shares his frustration with Disney and their lack of consideration towards Star Wars fans for what they'll be doing with the continuity established in the book series once episode VII comes out in December.  We discuss the news and future releases from Big Finish regarding Torchwood, Doom Coalistion, The Worlds of Big Finish (extreme crossover release) and it's potiential marketing sceme.  When we get to the reviews we first finish discussing The Two Doctors classic story, focusing on audio only, but my explaining of what happened visually to add clarification to the story.  Next we discuss the Big Finish releases: The Defectors - by Nick Briggs; Last of the Cybermen - by Alan Barnes; Death Match - by Matt Fitton; Suburban Hell - by Alan Barnes; The Well-Mannered War - by Gareth Roberts, adapted by John Dorney; Damaged Goods - by Russell T. Davies, adapted by Jonathan Morris. During the review of Damaged Goods we get into the a second discussion/debate on Doctor Who "Cannon" or what is and what is not cannon, and then back to Star Wars cannon and not cannon.  I make a reference to @DoctorSquee's Gallifrey Stands Podcast interview with Paul Cornell. We finish up the show reviewing Jago & Litefoot sereis 9, Blake's 7 Truth and Lies, and Terrahawks Vol. 1, before a quick Game of Thrones discussion to end episode 20. Stay tuned for more Doctor Who goodness, including monthly Big Finish reviews, audio commentary, retro-reviews, the DWAP "Rassilon Seal of Approval" and beyond!

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, John Dorney joins us in northern Scotland to investigate the disappearance of the Ninth Legion — only to discover that there are things here even more terrible than the Roman army, things that can only be fought with trust and empathy and music. It's The Eaters of Light. Notes and links Crash (2004) starts with a voiceover by Don Cheadle, laying out the terms of the metaphorical link between car crashes and human interactions generally. It's not a very popular movie, not only because of its superficial approach to issues of race, but also because it won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Picture instead of Brokeback Mountain. Richard mentions American YA fiction writer Scott Westerfield, particularly the Uglies series with its teenage protagonist. He also mentions William Golding's 1954 novel Lord of the Flies, where a group of schoolchildren stranded without adults on a deserted island, quickly revert to savagery. Brian Vernel was born in 1990, so he was 26 or 27 when he played Lucius in this episode, and 32 when he played far-right extremist Curly in the first season of Slow Horses in 2022. Kar's speech about the depredations of the Roman Army is taken from the Agricola by Tacitus, a short biography of his father-in-law, chronicling, among other things his campaigns in northern Britain. Tacitus depicts the Caledonian leader Calgacus making the speech just before the Battle of Mount Graupius, in which his forces were defeated by the Romans. You can read the speech in translation here. This week's monster is based on very common depictions found in Pictish carvings of an animal called the Pictish Beast. Some depictions are found among the carvings seen in this episode. Tania Bell is a companion to the Eighth Doctor, first appearing in Big Finish's Stranded in 2020 — the first transgender companion to appear in Doctor Who. She is played by Rebecca Root. John has written five stories for Tania: her second story Wild Animals, as well as The Long Way Round, What Just Happened?, Best Year Ever and Flatpack (in which she meets Christopher Ecclston's Ninth Doctor). John writes for Michelle Gomez as Missy in Divorced, Beheaded, Regenerated and in Too Many Masters. Tom Salinsky and John Dorney and from Best Pick podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Matilda the Musical. Matilda the Musical (2022) is a musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel based on the stage musical by Tim Minchin. It is directed by Matthew (Pride) Warchus and stars Alisha Weir as Matilda alongside Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Mr and Mrs Wormwood and Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull. Matilda the Musical follows the same story as the classic novel. Forever the disappointment of her family for not being born a boy, Matilda finds joy and escapism in reading. When it is discovered she has never been to school she is sent to Crunchem Hall. While at school she impresses the shy Miss Honey and irritates the angry and violent Miss Trunchbull with her precocious talents. Where it differs from the novel is the sub plot of an escapologist who falls in love with and marries an acrobat that is reoccurring. Is Matilda the best musical film of the last 20 years? It is according to Tom! Helen was less convinced, the addition of the unnecessary acrobat plot takes away from the original magic of the book and makes it a two hour film. While recommendability was pretty high its two hour runtime meant lower repeat and engagement scores, to give an overall rating of 4.16. You may remember that Rob and Guy covered Peter Cook in quite some detail in our episode on the Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer with our guest, Tom Salinsky of Best Pick Pod. Well, now we are talking about Cook & Moore as a duo, focusing mainly on Not Only But Also and, of course, our film for this week, Bedazzled. Rather neatly, another host of Best Pick joins us for the 1967 Faustian adaptation. John Dorney gets involved with our Pete & Dud-centric episode. Bedazzled, also starring Eleanor Bron, Raquel Welch, and Barry Humphries, is the first film we have covered on Britcom Goes to the Movies, which has a Hollywood remake. Much as the idea of a Tom Cruise-starring remake of On The Buses would excite us, it simply doesn't exist! To Rob and Guy's shame, they didn't watch the remake, but luckily our guest did and was more than happy to fill us in on that as well.  Tom Salinksy and Jess Regan (the other two presenters of Best Pick) had chosen movies that shot straight to number one on our League table (although neither Michael Rimmer nor Sightseers stayed there), so could John continue this trend? Could Guy eat into Rob's quiz lead with John's questions on Cook & Moore? Find out by listening to episode 3! John Dorney and Tom Salinsky from Best Pick podcast join Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Nyad. Nyad (2023) is a biographical sports drama based on swimmer Diana Nyad's life and her book Find a Way: The Inspiring Story of One Woman's Pursuit of a Lifelong Dream. It stars Annette Bening as Diana and Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll, Diana's best friend and trainer. Rhys Ifans also stars as John Bartlett, the navigator of her support ship. The film follows Diana as she attempts to complete the 110-mile nonstop swim from Cuba to Florida that has eluded her since 1978. In 2011, at the age of 60 Diana makes the first of many attempts to complete the journey. Nyad follows a standard sports biopic template, except there are big questions about the validity of her completed swim. Not only is the main swim potentially not 100% accurate, some of the major moments in the Nyad completely fictional. There was no shark! Recommendability scores for Nyad were firmly floating around the threes, not a bad film but also not an especially exciting or remarkable one. Everyone was in agreement that it is also a good film to watch while doing a task, so not particularly high on engagement, which gives an overall score of 2.70. On this episode of the show, we discussed the Irish Civil War Fatalities Project. The Irish Civil War Fatalities Project, supported with funding from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, seeks to identify all of the conflict-related fatalities in Ireland between the opening shots of the Civil War on 28 June 1922 and the ceasefire and dump arms order on 24 May 1923. For decades, historians of the Civil War have resorted to estimates when surveying the human cost of Ireland's Civil War. Now, for the first time, UCC historian Dr Andy Bielenberg, assisted by John Dorney, has enumerated the civilian and combatant fatalities, allowing for a wide-ranging, sometimes surprising, analysis of the nature and geographic distribution of the casualties and their impact. In collaboration with UCC's Atlas of the Irish Revolution Team, the research findings have been cartographically represented in a searchable, interactive Civil War Fatalities map. The project can be accessed here. Our own John Dorney discussed his time working on the project and what information is contained on the new site. We have recently started a Patreon page for The Irish Story website and The Irish History Show. Despite much scholarship on the subject, there is little agreement on just how many people actually died during the Civil War in 1922 and 1923. However, a new project at UCC aims to change this. Joining Seán to discuss is John Dorney, Research Assistant on the Irish Civil War Fatalities Project and the author of The Civil War in Dublin.Image: National Library of Ireland, HOG54.

The 2006 Mel Gibson movie, Apocalypto, takes us into a decadent Maya civilization in the Yucatan on the eve of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. It could be a commentary on ancient Rome or the present-day US, but, because it is a new world for both the viewer and the forest-dwelling protagonists, we get to see it through ‘new eyes' and a ‘beginner's mind.' It's a great movie, a cinematic masterpiece. It also allows us to ask how Mel Gibson, a devout Catholic and such a human sinner—as we all are, though when he does something terrible it's in the news—should proclaim the Gospel after he has fallen from his moral pedestal a few times. We also ask about how the Church should proceed given her many painful scandals. It was a great discussion on the Missio Dei podcast on YouTube and I'm delighted to share it here. This pleases Tegan and Nyssa no end... but the Doctor is more interested in visiting an alien friend of his living on a nearby mining planet and is able to persuade his friends to join him. But on arrival, his friend is nowhere to be found and the locals are more than slightly unwelcoming. With limited options for departure and a hostile populace they may be in a lot of trouble. Sometimes true monsters are found in the strangest places. 2. The Edge of the War by Jonathan Barnes (3 parts) France in the summer of 1936. The village of Villy is in a state of contentment, tinged only slightly with unease. A kilometre away, construction is underway on a large underground fortification, part of the Maginot Line project which has seen the building of a series of defences against future invasion. A young artist has arrived in the village to paint the landscape. Her name is Nyssa and she has taken a room in the local inn, run in its owner's absence by a young Australian woman called Tegan. But she's not the only newcomer. A detective called the Doctor has just got in from Paris. And he has quite a mystery to solve... On June 22nd 1922, the British Field Marshall, Henry Wilson was shot dead in London. The assassination sparked a major political crisis in Ireland. The British government blamed the killing on a faction of the IRA opposed to the recent Anglo-Irish Treaty. When they demanded action be taken against them, Michael Collins oversaw an attack on an IRA unit occupying the Four Courts in Dublin. This sparked the Irish Civil War.Over the last century the incident has been shrouded in controversy.  Many at the time and since have accused Michael Collins himself of ordering the attack on Wilson. In this episode I am joined by John Dorney to discuss the assassination of Henry Wilson, the fallout and who was responsible.  My exclusive supporters' series on the Irish Civil War with Dr Brian Hanley of Trinity College Dublin continued this week on Acast+ and Patreon. On this episode of the Irish History Show we looked at executions carried out by the Free State government during the Irish Civil War. The executions were made possible by legislation known as the Public Safety Bill, which was passed in the Dail on September 27, 1922. The emergency legislation gave to the National Army powers of punishment for anyone ‘taking part in or aiding and abetting attacks on the National Forces', having possession of arms or explosives ‘without the proper authority' or disobeying an Army General Order. Military Courts could impose the sentence of death, imprisonment or penal servitude on those found to be guilty of such offences. The Provisional Government, which was in place only to enact the Treaty and oversee the handover from the British administration to the Irish Free State, technically had no legal right to enact new legislation without assent of the Governor General, but this post had yet to be filled. Indeed, the Free State itself did not formally exist until December 7, 1922. So, the Public Safety Bill was technically not a law but simply a resolution passed in the Dáil. It was not until August 1923 that the Free State would pass an Act of Indemnity for all actions committed during the Civil War and also passed new, formal legislation that it would retrospectively legalise what it had enacted in 1922. John Dorney wrote an article on the executions for the Irish Story which is available here. We have recently started a Patreon page for The Irish Story website and The Irish History Show.
