One thing Theresa May will be remembered for is her treatment of the British police. When she was Home Secretary, Mrs May brutally cut more than a fifth of all funding to police forces. The unofficial diktat was that the police should do more with less, a mystifying statement that almost guarantees a demoralised and thus compliant workforce. So is this what she wanted? Or was there another motive to this act? A political move maybe, that would begin the privatisation of Britain's police force. Joining us to discuss the ongoing privatisation that the police and other public services are subject to, is the activist and campaigner with South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group, John Grayson, and senior lecturer of criminology at Sheffield University, Adam White. - Broadcast January 2018 - Read & Watch: https://renegadeinc.com/profits-or-policing/

“The thing that had to change most fundamentally [in The Grand Sophy] is that Sophy is simply untroubled…she always has the upper hand, she always has the answer and she's always outwitting everybody. For the film…if a character is completely unassailable, it becomes frustrating. You have to find the kryptonite, you have to find what would make her vulnerable, and what would make her unsure of herself. If she's being so bold and outrageous, what are the consequences?' – Olivia Hetreed on adapting The Grand Sophy into a film Welcome to our final episode in this season of Heyer Today, the podcast all about historical novelist, Georgette Heyer. Sara-Mae has now been working on this programme for years, over which time, the world has been reshaped by a pandemic, she's had a child and met a huge community of Heyer admirers and fans. It's been a tremendously rewarding process in which she's gotten to reread the books she's loved almost all her life and see them with fresh eyes, alongside our Heyer newbies. Since she began this project, looking for Heyer content that was thin on the ground, new podcasts have sprung up, academic essays and conferences exploring the world Heyer created, as well as TV shows adapting the work of similar authors. All of which has made us hopeful that at long last, Heyer will get the recognition she deserves from critics and movie makers. In this final episode, we'll visit Heyer on her deathbed, with her best friend and husband Ronald at her side, as the magnificent Sarah Golding and Karim Kronfli give voice to her final moments in a tremendously touching scene. *Trigger warning, this scene may be difficult to listen to if you've lost someone from lung-related ailments. On top of that, we chat to screenwriter Olivia Hetreed, coming full circle on our journey to discover what happened to her and her husband, producer Andy Paterson's film version of The Grand Sophy. We'll also speak to Peter Buckman again, as he tells us all about his adaptation of TGS, born out of frustration in the film world. Plus, Jennifer Kloester, Heyer's biographer, will discuss the controversial side of Heyer's oeuvre, exploring accusations of anti-Semitism which have led some to call for her to be ‘cancelled'. Finally, we have an Aussie book club who've never read her work giving us their verdict on The Grand Sophy. SO. MUCH. GOOD. STUFF. This episode was edited, researched, produced and hosted by Sara-Mae Tuson. Beth Keehn worked with Sara-Mae on production, writing and research. Mike Scott also helped with production, as well as a little acting here and there. Rowan Scott for being an adorable addition to the Fable Gazers family. Thanks to Cat Warren and Will Dell for their help across the series with production. Michael Mandalis edited and recorded Beth's bits throughout the season and he did a marvellous job. Thanks also to Geraldine Elliot, Talitha Gamaroff and everyone who supported us in creating this work. We could never have made this without the help of all the guests we've had on this season's episodes. You're all totally fabulous, even if you didn't become converts. Heyer's deathbed scene was enacted by the magnificent Sarah Golding as Heyer, and Karim Kronfli doing his usual fabulous job as Ronald. We'd like to thank our wonderful cast across the series: Helen Davidge as young Heyer, Beth Crane and Hedley Knights playing multiple roles, including Heyer's son, Richard (please check out their brilliant pod We Fix Space Junk, amongst many others), Fiona Thraille (playing Pat Wallace and others), Thomas and Holly Golding as young Boris and young Richard, John Grayson as Frere, Karen Heimdahl, my mother, Cathy Tuson as Sylvia and Mike Scott, again. You all helped to bring Heyer's world to life, and we're profoundly grateful to all of you. Look out for bonus episodes later in the year, we have plans to work with the International Heyer Society and Jen Kloester on some special short episodes. The music used in this episode is from Emma Gattril's luminous album, Chapter I, as well as Jerome Alexander's cinematic Message to Bears work. Original music was composed especially for the podcast, by Sara-Mae and Tom Chadd, and their work will shortly be available on Spotify and Bandcamp or on request for people who donate to our Paypal. Comment and take part in our discussions on social media, we're @fablegazers on Instagram and @fable_gazers on Twitter. Special thanks to Peter Buckman for all his kind assistance, and for letting us use selections from his adaptation of The Grand Sophy, do go and find out more about it at thegrandsophy.co.uk Remember to rate and review the pod … it helps small indie companies like us to thrive. If you'd like to help us with future projects, you can go to our 'Support us' page and donate money to keep us in tea and biscuits. Heyer Today has been a Fable Gazers production. Show notes: The Grand Sophy extracts were produced by Jane Markham of Podcats, who cast six young actors, all members of the Oxford University Dramatic Society. It's time for another book club episode on Heyer Today, the podcast all about Georgette Heyer and her work. Guests are Sara-Mae's hubby Mike Scott, who's finally cracked and allowed her to convince him to read ‘The Unknown Ajax', along with travel journo and radio broadcaster, Rob Crossan. So far, the convert tally numbers 10.5 out of 14. Will she convert Rob and Mike? Apart from being Sara-Mae's husband, Mike's also a Partnership Manager for MacMillan Cancer Support, a charity he's long been passionate about. Rob is a published author, freelance journalist and radio presenter based in Stockwell, South London. He's got over ten years' experience writing and talking about travel, lifestyle, food, music, books and disability affairs. And he's been published absolutely everywhere from The Sunday Times, Tatler, The Guardian to CNN Travel and more. You can hear him on BBC radio shows including ‘From Our Own Correspondent', ‘Cerys Matthews' on BBC 6 Music, Feedback on BBC Radio Four, plus he has a fab show called The Happiness Map, in which he chats to musicians like Elvis Costello about the music they associate with a favourite travel destination. Join us for audio drama featuring Sarah Golding, Fiona Thraille and John Grayson, as well as historical contextualisation and a discussion of Heyer's one and only interview with Aussie war correspondant and journalist, Coral Craig. Plus extracts from the audio book courtesy of Audible. Music: You can find Message to Bears here. Tom Chadd's music here. and Emma Gatrill's website is here. Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom! take a close look at the DC Comics titles for the week of August 17, 2021. Jace felt it was a bit of a down week, but Rocky was pretty pleased overall. Superman And The Authority #2 - Manchester Black starts recruiting and this is certainly a version of The Authority we never thought we'd see. Will they be strong enough to do what needs to be done? Writer - Grant Morrison, Artists - Mikel Janin, Fico Ossio, Evan Cagle & Travel Foreman, Color Artists - Jordie Bellaire, Sebastian Cheng, Dave Stewart & Alex Sinclair, Letterer - Steve Wands Shazam #2 - Dane and Billy are in the Underrealm, but getting there is just the beginning of the adventure. How will Billy find the Rock of Eternity and when he does ... then what? Also we learn that Dane is much more than he appears to be. Might he be so powerful because of who is father is and is his father, Neron? WHAT?!?!? Writer - Tim Sheridan, Artist - Clayton Henry, Color Artist - Marcelo Maiolo, Letterer - Rob Leigh Batman Secret Files: Clownhunter #1 - Ed Brisson always grounds his stores no matter how fantastical the character. The same is true here, but neither Jace nor Rocky care much for Clownhunter, so despite a technically well done comic, both guys felt this story fell a little flat. Do you agree? You may have to read for yourself to find out. Writer - Ed Brisson, Artist - Rosi Kampe, Color Artist - Andrew Dalhouse, Letterer - Simon Bowland Batman Catwoman #6 - The triple narrative and speed with which this series is coming out still continue to be a challenge. Jace once again asserts that once the whole series is out and he can read it in once sitting that this story will be pretty damn good. It just isn't there yet. Rocky read it multiple times but still feels compelled to agree. Writer - Tom King, Artist - Clay Mann, Color Artist - Tomeu Morey, Letterer - Clayton Cowles Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow #3 - This story continues to impress narratively, artistically and most of all, emotionally. This issue could stand on it's own as a wonderful story showing how much Kara cares about others. Knowing Tom King the themes and ideas displayed here will resonate throughout the series and especially at the end. Writer - Tom King, Artist - Bilquis Evely, Color Artist - Matheus Lopes, Letterer - Clayton Cowles Superman Red Blue #6 - One of our favorite issues of the anthology so far. Tom King spins a masterful story of how much Superman can mean to us and how in his reflection we all are special. Plus a cool retro story with great art from Matt Wagner and more! Writers - Sophie Campbell, Matt Wagner, Tom King, Darcie Little Badger & Rex Ogle, Artist - Sophie Campbell, Matt Wagner, Paolo Rivera, Steve Pugh & Mike Norton, Color Artist - Brennan Wagner, Letterers - Dave Lanphear, Steve Wands & Pat Brosseau Nightwing #83 - We finally find out what Dick has planned for the fortune left to him by Alfred. Also Dick seems to come to an understanding with his "sister" as she hits at the fact she is actually working from the inside to take down Blockbuster & crew. Jace still isn't convinced she is really the daughter of John Grayson though. Could that just be another part of her 'cover'? Time will tell. Writer - Tom Taylor, Artist - Bruno Redondo, Color Artist - Adriano Lucas, Letterer - Wes Abbott Flash #773 - In Rocky's words we have returned to "normalcy". Wally West is once again the Scarlett Speedster and headlining the Flash title. As he has his first day at the job Mister Terrific set him up with, he relishes in the freedom he has to react to any situations that arise where the Flash is needed, but maybe more importantly he realizes that his experiences as The Flash over the years have given him unique knowledge. Knowledge that can make him a valuable asset to the engineering team his is set up with. Writer - Jeremy Adams, Artist - Will Conrad, Color Artist - Alex Sinclair, Letterer - Steve Wands Catwoman #34 - It's a brief reunion for Selina and Bruce as Batman rescues Catwoman from the aftermath of her fight with Father Valley last issue. Selina is not one to back down though, so she goes toe-to-toe with the assassin once again, but is he perpetually one step ahead of her and if so, how can she win this battle? Writer - Ram V, Artist - Fernando Blanco, Color Artist - Jordie Bellaire, Letterer - Tom Napolitano

Do Voice Actors Need Experienced Directors? At first glance, this seems a surprising statement to even be debating - but with budgets being increasingly squeezed across the creative industries, voice actors are finding that they're being directed by all kinds of people from production teams - not necessarily experienced directors. Voice Directors have a unique and precious skillset. So - along with the insights and comments from a number of voice actors and industry professionals - this is the subject that I'm tackling this week on Talking Creative. There were 4 main themes that emerged: Directors are the bridge between the actor and the client; Directors have the creative overview of the whole piece; Directors improve the quality of an actor’s performance through collaboration; Experienced directors know how to work with actors to build the layers of a nuanced, engaging performance quickly and efficiently - producing brilliant results AND saving time and money. Many thanks to everyone who got involved and helped me to create this New Year Special despite lockdown, New Year celebrations and birthdays - I couldn't do it without you! Barbara Kean returns to Gotham to discover Ivy Pepper and Selina Kyle in her apartment. Elsewhere, Fish Mooney plans to save herself and the other prisoners when they discover that they were kidnapped so that their organs can be harvested. When a snake dancer at Haly's Circus named Lila Valeska is murdered, James Gordon and Leslie Tompkins investigate as the Flying Graysons and the Lloyds are suspects. An old psychic named Paul Cicero approaches Gordon, claiming to have received a message from the dead dancer. James is skeptical and thinks the psychic is covering up for the killer. Upon deducing that her son, Jerome (Cameron Monaghan), is the killer and Cicero is his father, Jerome has a psychotic breakdown and confesses to the murder claiming to have hated her for her insistent "nagging." When customers begin to steadily decrease at Oswald Cobblepot's newly obtained club, Zsasz gives Cobblepot a tortured and brainwashed Butch Gilzean who he says is knowledgeable when it comes to maintaining clubs and has been been "working on him" for days. Taking advice from Selina and Ivy, Barbara attempts to re-unite with James but is enraged when she sees him kissing Leslie, though neither of them notice her. Bruce holds a board meeting at Wayne Enterprises and voices concern to the executives that the company is involved with illegal activities. John Grayson and Mary Lloyd get engaged after the dispute between the two families are resolved. Mooney tells the lead captor at the prison named Thomas Schmidt that she would like to meet with his boss.

Gotham TV Podcast - The longest running podcast about Gotham on Fox
As Gotham is still on a mid-season break in the UK and Ireland, Gotham TV Podcast chat about the graphic novel Batman Hush (Volume 1 Collected; Issues #1-5). Written by Jeph Loeb with art by Jim Lee and Scott Williams this story arc was originally released as Batman 608-612. Notable about this story is the introduction of the character Tommy Elliot (Played by Cole Vallis in Episode 8 of Gotham "The Mask") and which features flashbacks to his childhood friendship with the Young Bruce Wayne. We talk about the main story and our impressions of Batman Hush Volume One. Remember you can email us at feedback@gothamtvpodcast.com or email john@gothamtvpodcast.com or derek@gothamtvpodcast.com Gotham News ⦁ Gotham has been officially renewed by Fox in the US for a second season. At the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter event on Saturday 17th January Co-Chairman and CEO of Fox, Dana Walden, said that Fox "love the show" and they've told the team behind the hit show "keep doing what you're doing". This is great news. ⦁ Other great news revolves around RTE in Ireland who have officially confirmed that Gotham will premiere on RTÉ2 beginning Monday 26th January at 9pm. They've even released a brand new trailer. This should hopefully mean a wider audience is reached for the show in Ireland. ⦁ Robin Lord-Taylor fans have been asking one question regularly for months. What do previous actors who play the character think about his performance as the young Oswald Cobblepot on Gotham? Well the answer was given at the TCA's this weekend when Danny DeVito (there to promote "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia") was asked about his opinion about Robin Lord-Taylor. He told AccessHollywood.com "I've watched the show. I think he's a very good young Penguin" ,"He's a terrific actor,". A ringing endorsement. ⦁ It's also been announced that the future father of Dick Grayson, John Grayson will be played by Rob Gorrie. The circus will roll into Gotham in Episode 16 carrying with it the Flying Graysons. The episode is titled "The Blind Fortune Teller". As Gotham takes place during the young years of Bruce Wayne, John Grayson will be a much younger character so we won't see any appearance of Dick Grayson in the show. DC Connected News ⦁ Former Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy has dropped out of his second DC movie "Suicide Squad" due to scheduling conflicts. The current movie he's filming, "The Revenant", has run over so he's unable to take on the role of Rick Flag in "Suicide Squad" which starts filming in April 2014. Thanks for listening we'll be covering Volume 2 of Hush in our next podcast as Gotham is still on hiatus in Ireland and the UK; returning to Channel 5 for the second half of season one in March.
