A Voice and Beyond
#78. Life as a Cruise Industry Production Cast Vocalist with Kayla Saunders and Dominique Petit Frere

A Voice and Beyond

This week's guests are Kayla Saunders & Dominique Petit Frere. In July, A Voice and Beyond embarked on a “Beyond” adventure on a cruise ship sailing around the Mediterranean, but it wasn't all play for me, as I had the pleasure of doing something that I hadn't done before and that was to interview two guests simultaneously, in an in-person situation. Kayla Saunders and Dominque Petite Frere were two of the production cast singers performing onboard the ship, Celebrity Beyond, and they sat down and shared their own personal experiences as singers working within the cruising industry, in a tell-all interview. They explained the audition process, the gruelling rehearsal schedule, their work demands and performance expectations. We also discussed Kayla and Dom's regime for maintaining good vocal health, but most importantly, how they take care of their physical, mental and emotional health and well-being while living in a pressure cooker environment, onboard a ship. Other important topics we delved into were how the cruising industry can provide support for its performers, for example, having a vocology team on standby to support vocalists' healthcare needs, but also how the industry can further promote and create policy around inclusivity, belonging, equity and diversity. This is an eye-opening interview and I felt very privileged sitting in the company of both Kayla and Dom as they spoke so candidly about their personal experiences in an industry that can continue to improve support for its performers.www.kaylasaunders.comwww.Domlepetitfrere.comIn this episode05:35 — Kayla's Musical Influences07:44 — Dom's Formal Musical Education14:11 — Transitioning to life onboard a Cruise Ship23:10 — Appointing a Vocal Captain26:52 — What Is a Black Track?31:10 — Impact of Manipulating the Voice40:58 — Celebrity Beyond54:21 — Responsibilities of a Vocal Captain57:43 — Vocal Warmup Exercises1:01:04 — Taking Care of Their Physical, Mental, and Emotional Health on the Ship1:07:17 — Typical Production Show's Schedule1:13:58 — Things the Company Can Do Better for Artists1:19:57 — Is There a Gender Bias in Terms of Pay?1:24:47 — Being Black in the Entertainment Industry in Terms of Inclusivity1:33:30 — Advice for Other Performers Coming to the Ship1:36:39 — Kayla & Dom's Next PlansFor more go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/78Like this episode? Learn what praying in the name of Jesus really means. I taught this week on the call of Abraham and the development of God's missionary call through the nation of Israel as they were responsible to communicate the truth of God to the cultures around them. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12 —the first three verses there —Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was. We also look at how the Norse in Ireland absorbed, developed and even used Christianity to advance their position in Ireland during the early medieval period. Christianity was well established in Ireland by the time the Norse arrived and Christianity was a powerful cultural force for the Norse to adopt, but also adapt to their own needs and goals. I am very excited to talk about this topic!•With that, here is the next piece of the mosaic of the history of the Popes of Rome and Christian Church.[00:00:00] What were some of the similarities and differences between the way the Norse interacted with the locals in Ireland as a posed to Scotland or some of the other, you know, Caltech areas you might call them? Ooh, that's a good question. Um, I feel like Alex Wolf would be the one to read the books on because I have a personal interest in, in the isle of man.Um, I, I don't think I'd be able to systematically talk about the relationship of say, uh, picks or, or people in Eastern Scotland, um, and their relationship with, with the Norris there. I just, I haven't studied it enough that I I'd be able to, to, uh, I be able to talk about it in detail. Um, I do have to say that that Ireland does have a really thick analystic and as well as this dynastic propaganda.Um, whereas it's, it's a lot lighter on the ground and I love man in Scotland, so that in of itself might make [00:01:00] my make that, um, uh, last time and now getting into the interaction they had religiously the, could you tell us a little bit about Norse religion? Absolutely. Okay. So Norris religion at this time was aware of and being touched by and being shaped by, um, both Roman religion, as well as Christianity.Um, there was no sense of a pan Norse Pantheon. There was no sense of a series of, of priesthoods or, or a central. System of, uh, okay. These people go to this school for training and then they go back to their hometown. Um, now there were, you know, religious centers, but they were, they were really only important for, you know, people within one to three days ride or travel. There was not this concept of, of there is one holy place and everything derives from it. It was very [00:02:00] much a local familial DDD. Got bigger and bigger. Um, you know, there's, there's plenty of anthropological work on, on the cults of, oh then the cults of tear and fill and these gods. Um, so when we talk about north to religion at this time, um, it's, it's a.It's a religion that is only thinking about itself as it is being replaced. You know, people didn't have to think about what their relationship was to the gods or to land when it was just everything. When it was just the way you did things. And now people are coming with crosses on their chest saying there's only one God, and this is the God.And now, now these people who have just believed what their ancestors believed are going. I don't know what I believe, but it's not a cross. I feel really close to the store guy. I'm going to wear a hammer. Um, you know, people weren't wearing hammers, uh, 2002 go, they were wearing them. Oh, that's interesting.Yeah. I was going to ask about that. [00:03:00] Yeah. Yeah, exactly. They, they didn't, they didn't have a sense of, of formal religion. Now that's not to say that it wasn't important to them. It's not to say that there weren't priests, you know, there absolutely were, there were holy sites and, and, you know, really fabulous rights that left behind some really fascinating archeological stuff. In the ninth century in the ninth, 10th centuries, um, he then re the, the, the act of, of, of worshiping the old God, the foreign Cedar, the old ways, um, was really kind of crystallizing in his, as it was coming to a close recognizing. Um, you know, now people are saying to change the God that you worship. And, and so you had to kind of wrap your head around that, wrap your head around the idea of, um, having to culturally convert, um, and, and change the way you worship and the way you do things. So, um, Uh, so north religion, you know, like we nowadays, [00:04:00] we're all familiar with Thor and, and, and that, um, mythology, but that mythology that we're using nowadays was pretty much codified at this time. Um, and a few centuries later in ice London in, uh, in the forms of, of Snorri stir listens, um, uh, codifying the north snore Smiths, um, the codex Regius collecting, uh, old Scholastic poetry.Um, it's, it's, it's powerful stuff. It's, it's, it's amazing stuff, but it's also, you know, the, the, the Swan song of, of, of a really big kaleidoscope of, of ways of seeing the world that had to get collapsed very quickly, uh, in the face of Christianity and then their day-to-day worship. Necessarily, we'd get a, you look in the delayer, uh, children's book of Norse mythology, and they have a chart of Thor here and oh, and here is that how they would have conceived of it or would have gone village to village. We're [00:05:00] more of a Thor village here. And this is more because it is it's their culture. It's their it's was something that was really ingrained into their. Entire life. And it's not Christianity where it's this, this and this and it's doctrinal. And that it was something that, and maybe imposed isn't the right word. But that's something that when you adopt Christianity, you're getting this manual of how to do it. Is that how Norse religion would have looked and now a word from our sponsors.Right. Exactly. It's it's the opposite of that. It's it's is do it yourself. It's it's what was handed down to you? So the way you said that were Thor family or, or in this valley, we honor Frere, um, would, would very much be the way of things that you can kind of see that with, with, I don't know how many Norse names you've encountered, but sometimes you have families or every single kid is a [00:06:00] Thorstein Thor, rust or vault. That's a Thor fam. Um, you know, and then, you know, gods are, were also be associated with, um, social classes. Uh, you know, um, a blacksmith would probably have a different deity than, than the fishermen's that even village. Um, but there is, there was not this, this one big how to guidebook, there was no dogma to it.There was, it was, it was. Doing doing right by the way, things had always been done in your area rather than some holy man, um, imposing things from a manual, from a book or something like that. So, um, you know, and even then things would have changed generation to generation because this is all oral culture.

Heyer Today
Not by inches - finale featuring screenwriter Olivia Hetreed

Heyer Today

“The thing that had to change most fundamentally [in The Grand Sophy] is that Sophy is simply untroubled…she always has the upper hand, she always has the answer and she's always outwitting everybody. For the film…if a character is completely unassailable, it becomes frustrating. You have to find the kryptonite, you have to find what would make her vulnerable, and what would make her unsure of herself. If she's being so bold and outrageous, what are the consequences?' – Olivia Hetreed on adapting The Grand Sophy into a film Welcome to our final episode in this season of Heyer Today, the podcast all about historical novelist, Georgette Heyer. Sara-Mae has now been working on this programme for years, over which time, the world has been reshaped by a pandemic, she's had a child and met a huge community of Heyer admirers and fans. It's been a tremendously rewarding process in which she's gotten to reread the books she's loved almost all her life and see them with fresh eyes, alongside our Heyer newbies. Since she began this project, looking for Heyer content that was thin on the ground, new podcasts have sprung up, academic essays and conferences exploring the world Heyer created, as well as TV shows adapting the work of similar authors. All of which has made us hopeful that at long last, Heyer will get the recognition she deserves from critics and movie makers.   In this final episode, we'll visit Heyer on her deathbed, with her best friend and husband Ronald at her side, as the magnificent Sarah Golding and Karim Kronfli give voice to her final moments in a tremendously touching scene. *Trigger warning, this scene may be difficult to listen to if you've lost someone from lung-related ailments. On top of that, we chat to screenwriter Olivia Hetreed, coming full circle on our journey to discover what happened to her and her husband, producer Andy Paterson's film version of The Grand Sophy. We'll also speak to Peter Buckman again, as he tells us all about his adaptation of TGS, born out of frustration in the film world. Plus, Jennifer Kloester, Heyer's biographer, will discuss the controversial side of Heyer's oeuvre, exploring accusations of anti-Semitism which have led some to call for her to be ‘cancelled'. Finally, we have an Aussie book club who've never read her work giving us their verdict on The Grand Sophy. SO. MUCH. GOOD. STUFF. This episode was edited, researched, produced and hosted by Sara-Mae Tuson. Beth Keehn worked with Sara-Mae on production, writing and research. Mike Scott also helped with production, as well as a little acting here and there. Rowan Scott for being an adorable addition to the Fable Gazers family. Thanks to Cat Warren and Will Dell for their help across the series with production. Michael Mandalis edited and recorded Beth's bits throughout the season and he did a marvellous job. Thanks also to Geraldine Elliot, Talitha Gamaroff and everyone who supported us in creating this work. We could never have made this without the help of all the guests we've had on this season's episodes. You're all totally fabulous, even if you didn't become converts. Heyer's deathbed scene was enacted by the magnificent Sarah Golding as Heyer, and Karim Kronfli doing his usual fabulous job as Ronald. We'd like to thank our wonderful cast across the series: Helen Davidge as young Heyer, Beth Crane and Hedley Knights playing multiple roles, including Heyer's son, Richard (please check out their brilliant pod We Fix Space Junk, amongst many others), Fiona Thraille (playing Pat Wallace and others), Thomas and Holly Golding as young Boris and young Richard, John Grayson as Frere, Karen Heimdahl, my mother, Cathy Tuson as Sylvia and Mike Scott, again. You all helped to bring Heyer's world to life, and we're profoundly grateful to all of you. Look out for bonus episodes later in the year, we have plans to work with the International Heyer Society and Jen Kloester on some special short episodes. The music used in this episode is from Emma Gattril's luminous album, Chapter I, as well as Jerome Alexander's cinematic Message to Bears work. Original music was composed especially for the podcast, by Sara-Mae and Tom Chadd, and their work will shortly be available on Spotify and Bandcamp or on request for people who donate to our Paypal. Comment and take part in our discussions on social media, we're @fablegazers on Instagram and @fable_gazers on Twitter. Special thanks to Peter Buckman for all his kind assistance, and for letting us use selections from his adaptation of The Grand Sophy, do go and find out more about it at thegrandsophy.co.uk Remember to rate and review the pod … it helps small indie companies like us to thrive. If you'd like to help us with future projects, you can go to our 'Support us' page and donate money to keep us in tea and biscuits. Heyer Today has been a Fable Gazers production.   Show notes: The Grand Sophy extracts were produced by Jane Markham of Podcats, who cast six young actors, all members of the Oxford University Dramatic Society.

Brief History of Wars

The Anglo – Zulu wars, a clash between the might of the British Empire with the African Zulu Kingdom, began in 1879.In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was appointed High Commissioner for Southern Africa. His mission was to bring the various African kingdoms, tribal areas, and Boer Republics together under British rule, modelled after the policy which brought the various states within Canada together under one political and military control. He was opposed by several forces, mainly the various independent Boer states, and the Zulu Kingdom, with its vast army.In order to bring the region and its tribes together under as part of the British Empire, Frere decided to go to war with the Zulu Kingdom. Working on his own, without the backing of his government, Frere issued an ultimatum to the Zulu King Cetshwayo on 11 December 1878. The demands proved impossible to comply with, and war was declared. The British forces, led by Lord Chelmsford, invaded Zululand. Many battles ensued, including a stunning Zulu victory at Isandlwana, and the near-collapse of the garrison at Rorke's Drift. However, in the end, the British were triumphant. The Zulu Nation would no longer be independent. The podcast is under an hour, brief but informative and the history hit you are looking for. Please review!
