Magnus and friends climb up the rainbow (happy pride month) and visit with Heimdall, who loves a selfie. Once again, Rick dates this as solidly 2016 with selfie sticks and Vine (RIP). They are summoned to Jotunheim via a mysterious bowling alley sign, and get roped into trying to carry a giant bowling bag for giants. Apparently Jack can sew, what can't the sword do! Steel, Cloth & Waging the Hidden War I saw a read a missive on Substack recently by Matthew Herman Hudson that critiqued the claim that Christianity needs “less passive monks and more active knights.” To think the monk's labor is passive, a withdrawal from the struggle that defines this world, is to see with dim sight and hear with a stopped ear. Such a view shrinks the spiritual into a shallow mirror of the material. For even at the surface—the realm of flesh, stone, and letters—monks have been the lifeblood of the church since the days of Constantine. Their hands copied the scriptures, built the churches, tilled the land, and served the sick. Their words taught reformers, kings, and common folk. They crafted counterweights to pride and sloth, not in lofty disdain but in painful and deliberate denial of the very excess that tempts every human soul. And beyond this visible realm, their prayers, chants, and unbroken vigils batter the gates of heaven. Who among us, walking through modern light and noise, even fathoms what such prayers hold back or call forth? To imagine monastic work as lesser, as idle musings beside the knight's charge into battle, is to misunderstand both knight and monk. Both are bound to a fight, but one's battleground may be inward and the other outward. The monk guards the foundations of the world as the knight wields his sword for its survival. This misunderstanding, I suspect, comes from an itch born of modernity. The world, skeptical and blunt, distrusts the unseen. Machines hum; steel cuts; the airwaves tell stories of heroes whose weapons clatter in the din of war. The subtle weapons, the fasting, the kneeling, the holy words whispered in silence, appear useless. The hero of the world must spill blood to prove his worth. But have we grown so blind to old truths? The Scriptures speak plainly of the contest in heaven, of the war not against flesh and bone but against rulers, powers, and dominions unseen. Christ Himself withdrew to deserts, mountain tops, and gardens, not to shirk His call but to strengthen His heart for the final sacrifice. Did He not fast for forty days, battered by Satan's temptations, standing firm as the Adam who would not fall? And what of Paul, whose words on the “full armor of God” still rattle through the Christian soul? Truth girds the waist, righteousness shields the heart, and the sword, sharper than any iron blade, is the Word that cuts clean through falsehood. The fight we call “spiritual” is as bitter and unrelenting as the clash of armies, and if anything, its weapons bite deeper. Knights wield steel to cut down men; monks take up the cross to mortify the self. Do not mistake mortification for weakness—it takes far greater strength to defeat oneself than to kill a foe. And here, within this daily death, lies the heart of the monk's work. For in dying to pride, lust, and every grasping passion, the monk undermines the kingdom of hell. Even the ancients knew the gravity of this unseen fight. Long before Christ spoke in Judea, pagans grasped after heavenly hierarchies. The Norse sagas spoke of Asgard and Jotunheim, a layered cosmos bound by struggle. The Greeks warred their gods in stars and clouds; the Hebrews placed thrones, dominions, and seraphim at the peak of creation. And when the Son of Man walked the earth, He did not abolish such truths but fulfilled and revealed them. In His name, Gabriel still delivers messages to the lowly, and Michael still hews down the prince of Persia. This cosmos—full and flaming with meaning—is as far from our machine-built wastelands as heaven is from hell. The rise of secular power has not silenced the fight but drowned it in noise. Modern warfare no longer follows battle cries but clicks and transactions. Souls are not struck down in combat; they erode under streams of temptation, thin and ceaseless. Bread is discarded; circuses now shine on screens. The world whispers the lie that this life's struggles—our afflictions, temptations, and triumphs—are without weight, part of a meaningless drift. But the church, bound to her Bridegroom, stands against this drift. Her steeples, which once towered above every town, do not symbolize pride. They mark the upward pull of belief, the meeting point of earthly toil and heaven's calling. Every sacrament is an act of defiance—a claim that water holds rebirth, bread and wine turn flesh and blood, and words have power when spoken by authority. Each stained window, chalice, and vestment serves as a battlefield where meaning is reclaimed from chaos. Knights, monks, saints—each took their stand in different ways. In times of barbarian invasion, it was the knight's steel and flesh that shielded Christendom. In ages of spiritual decay, it was the monk's robe and ink that sustained the heart of the faith. Today's war may appear less bloody, but it is no less brutal. Our enemies are not outside the gates—they are in the walls, in the language, in the symbols twisted from their God-given roots. Against this flood, the church must hold her ground. Men look to their forefathers in this war because meaning requires anchors. Tradition gives us strength not out of nostalgia but because it is forged in the fires of centuries. The Mass does not dull the heart—it sharpens it against the world's cheap imitations of beauty. Ritual and liturgy, misunderstood as empty repetition, are in truth ancient weapons. The words of the Creed hold more power than the clamor of politics; the reading of the Scriptures breaks chains unseen. To kneel, to stand, to lift hands in the prayers of old, is to rehearse the movements of warriors in God's cause. To stand at this crossroads of belief and conflict is to recognize what is demanded of both body and spirit. We wear this armor not to triumph by our strength but by God's mercy. Ritual becomes not an adornment, but the scaffolding holding us firm against forces that grind bones to dust. And where does that leave the modern monk, the warrior in a world awash in screens and sirens? It leaves him with the same call as those before: to fight, though his battlefields are hidden and his victories unseen. His prayers build unseen citadels; his abstinence wounds the empire of the flesh. And for the knight whose heart burns with zeal to act—he, too, must be guided by the monk's hand. For God, in His wisdom, never set monk against knight or tradition against zeal. He wove them together as differing weapons in His vast arsenal. The knight, armed with sword and shield, must learn the humility to lay them down when called to prayer. And the monk, hands clasped in vigil, must trust that his brothers at the gates wield their weapons not for glory but for God. Whether in chainmail or a rough robe, on the battlefield or in the cloister, every soldier in this kingdom wages the same war. For as long as there is a heaven and an earth, a Christ and a church, there will be a fight to preserve their bond against those who seek to sever it.

Follow me : https://youtu.be/O98QdkTUsjw Immerse yourself in the legendary tale of Utgarda-Loki, the king of the castle Utgard in the realm of giants, Jotunheim. This epic adventure unfolds as Thor, the God of Thunder, Loki, the cunning trickster, and Þjálfi, Thor's swift-footed servant, journey into the heart of the giants' territory. Utgarda-Loki, known for his deceptive tricks, challenges the trio to a series of seemingly simple contests, each harboring a hidden twist. Loki, renowned for his appetite, is pitted in an eating contest against Logi. To Loki's disbelief, Logi, later revealed as 'Wildfire', devours everything in sight, outmatching Loki's speed and leaving him stunned. Þjálfi, noted for his own swiftness, races against Hugi. Despite his best efforts, Þjálfi can't surpass Hugi, who is later unveiled as the embodiment of 'Thought', demonstrating the speed of the mind surpasses even the fastest of runners. The mighty Thor faces three distinct challenges. First, he attempts to drain a mead-filled horn. Despite his legendary drinking prowess, the mead appears unending. The hidden truth is later revealed: the horn is magically linked to the sea, and Thor's effort caused the tides to ebb. In the next challenge, Thor tries to lift a large cat. His mighty strength can raise only one paw. The cat, however, is no ordinary feline but a guise for the colossal Midgard Serpent, destined to battle Thor during Ragnarok. The final contest has Thor wrestling with an old woman, Elli. Try as he might, Thor can't best her. The humbling truth is that Elli represents 'Old Age', a battle that no one, not even a god, can win. The tale concludes with Utgarda-Loki revealing the illusions, confessing that had he known their true strength, he would never have let them into Utgard. This adventure delves into themes of perception, trickery, humility, and the inevitability of time. It serves as a reminder that things aren't always as they seem and that even the gods are bound by certain universal laws. Join us on this fascinating journey through Norse mythology, where gods and giants cross paths, revealing valuable lessons cloaked in thrilling tales. Uncover the hidden truths behind the challenges, and see Thor, Loki, and Þjálfi's endeavors in a new light in the Tale of Utgarda-Loki. #NorseHistory #Loki #Tyr #fenrir #AncientHistory #HistoryUncovered #loki #mimirswellmeditation #mimirswell #mimirswellpodcast #norsegods #norsemythology #vikinggods #vikings #germanic #scandinavia #heathenry #norsepagan #thor --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mimirswell/support

The original Thor from 2011, making Chris Hemsworth as well as Thor himself a household name. It still holds up pretty strongly and I think it may be the best in his quadrilogy, although I can understand why people believe Ragnarok to be the best. But this is funny, action packed, full of dutch angles thanks to Kenneth Branagh behind the camera, and the production design is spot on to show off a lavish Godly lifestyle and incredible scenery all around with the rainbow bridge, Jotunheim and much more than we had seen in the MCU before. It's great!
İskandinav Mitolojisinde Dokuz Diyar vardır; Odin'in hümettiği diyarı Asgard, insanların diyarı Midgard, Vanirlerin diyarı Vanaheim, devlerin diyarı Jotunheim, buz diyarı Niflheim, ateş diyarı Muspelheim, elflerin diyarı Alfheim, cücelerin diyarı Nidavellir, ölülerin diyarı Helheim. Minute One Hundred: From Thor's Decision to the Destruction of the Himinbjorg Joining us to discuss Thor's sacrifice and the end of Heimdall's Observatory is Dr. Arnold Blumberg, publisher, author, educator, pop culture & comics historian, and friendly neighborhood zombie expert. In the one hundredth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Loki's reaction to Thor's decision to destroy the bridge is fantastic, like he really didn't believe Thor would act. To that end, it's interesting that Loki was the only person who had thought about using the Bifrost this way. Perhaps it's that thinking outside the box that Loki did that inspired Thor to make the decision he makes? Part of this is Thor making the heroic sacrifice. Does that make the most sense here? Is there a selfish element here? Doesn't Bifrost connect all the Realms and by severing it, Thor's disconnecting all of them from each other for some woman he just met a few days ago? So the consequence is that this will affect them from getting to all nine realms, but there's also a read that all nine realms – or at least Jotunheim and Asgard – could be destroyed by this explosive use of Bifrost. So maybe Thor is asking Jane to forgive him while doing it as a way to save her and everyone else. As the Observatory breaks down and falls, the Bifrost blast continues shooting out into space. Is it hitting other planets as it shakes around? Why does Odin's eye open after that first hammer strike on the bridge? Loki's leap toward Thor with Gungnir works well, and it's great how it's timed with the explosion to blow them both back. The smashing of the rainbow bridge is so well designed. Everything about it looks perfect. The explosion looks and sounds great. We get a great shot of it on the edge of Asgard and how this looks, even if we don't really understand the floating island in space. It's an explosive minute and Dr. Blumberg joins us to discuss it all. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel! Minute Ninety-Seven: From Thor's Defense to Loki's Taunting Joining us to discuss all the fraternal drama is Dr. Arnold Blumberg, publisher, author, educator, pop culture & comics historian, and friendly neighborhood zombie expert. In the ninety-seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Loki wants to be heir to the throne. How strong of a plan is this though? Would his plan have worked if Thor hadn't shown up? Why is he still following through with his plan now that Thor's shown up to stop him? And what did he say to Frigga before he left for the Observatory? As we pointed out before, it's largely because he's operating from a point of emotion, not intellect. Loki fights so differently here. Instead of throwing knives and using cunning, he's facing off with Thor like Thor's counterpart. Was that a mistake? We pine for more great Marvel villains like this. Loki's argument provides some great metaphors that apply to issues today. It's interesting to look at the perspective on genocide. Thor had started a war earlier and killed plenty of Jotuns. Loki is doing the same in a different way. So it's interesting to see how Thor's changed through this conversation. Loki's threat to go after Jane feels a little off here. But there is an aspect to it that implies Loki is just saying things to get Thor to stop preventing the Bifrost from destroying Jotunheim. Thor doesn't want to fight, so what does he think of Loki taking two swipes at him with Gungnir? So much really goes back to the conversation Odin had with the two brothers when they were kids. Was it just through his Destroyer-cam that Loki knows about Jane? It's the big, bad, battle of words before the battle of brawn commences, and Dr. Arnold Blumberg joins us for it all. Tune in! Minute Ninety-Six: From a Frozen Yggdrasil to Loki's Reasoning Joining us to talk about Loki's plan and the faceoff with Thor is Dr. Arnold Blumberg. In the ninety-sixth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We try to figure out what Loki is using to freeze the Bifrost Yggdrasil-shaped energy in Heimdall's Observatory. It looks like he may be conjuring the Casket of Ancient Winters to appear right at the top of the ignition switch, causing it to freeze. Regardless, it's difficult to figure out. We also debate what Loki's plan actually was. There certainly is an element of Loki operating from an emotional place more than an intellectual place here. It's interesting that Loki chooses to use the Bifrost this way. We discuss the nature of it being used as a weapon. There is a bit of a frustrating element with Bifrost being used as a massive super-laser like in Star Wars. But are we at a point where trying to figure out the space physics is a moot point? We discuss a bit about Loki's plan about winning versus fighting and how there is an element – particularly with a warrior culture – that his method of killing the Jotuns actually makes a lot more sense than constant war. There are elements that remind us of Game of Thrones and also the use of drone technology. The lighting here is fantastic. The shot on Midgard does nice work to emphasize how Loki's actions are affecting all the realms. That being said, what does it mean that all the realms can see this? Is there an element of danger for them all? It's a bit disappointing we don't see more Jotun beasts running from the Bifrost beam on Jotunheim. It's interesting that Loki can continue using Gungnir, particularly in this way. We assume it's because it goes with the king role rather than with Odin like in the comics. Loki and Thor begin facing off as Jotunheim slowly gets blown up, and Dr. Blumberg's here for it. Tune in! Minute Ninety-Five: From Thor's Return to Bifrost Blast Joining us to talk about family reunions and planetary destruction are James Anderson and Colin M. Parker, hosts of the Timeline Scavengers podcast. In the ninety-fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Loki and Frigga hug. It's Loki's chance to shine. He's saved Dad and Mom from the mean frost giants and now he's good to rule, right? Uh, yeah... no. That's when Thor decides to show up. Frigga's thrilled and gives him a hug. What a death stare he throws at Loki! We love the way the conversation between Loki and Thor cuts back and forth between each of them with Odin's sleeping form in the lower foreground. Fantastic way to really tie the connection firmly between fathers and sons here. So Loki blasts Thor through the wall and down to the lower parts of Asgard. Next time we see him, he's riding on a horse toward the Observatory. So what about the whole part when Frigga confronts him for having attacked Thor? Where's that bit? It's kind of an important part that gets completely glossed over. Loki uses Gungnir to turn the Observatory on and blast Jotunheim with Bifrost energy. But why does it hit downtown Utgard instead of the Bifrost Junction we've come to know on the cliff's edge? James and Colin join us to talk about the family coming back together and Loki's Star Wars level plan to blow up a planet with a giant beam. Tune in! Loki is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney + starting June 9th. The third Marvel series to premiere on the streaming platform, it will follow the Avenger's incarnation of Loki as he teams up with the Time Variance Authority to sew the timeline he ruptured back into place. Robbie and Ben talk about their expectation and their fears. Plus, in 2004 Marvel released a 4 issue Loki comic book that was the definitive story of the trickster god. Does that book still hold up or has Tom Hiddleston and other more recent portrayals of the character reinvented the true king of Jotunheim?
