Hello Misfit Nation! I am excited to bring a special weekend episode of the Misfit Entrepreneur. Occasionally, I find something I truly enjoy and when I do I like to share it with you. In 2021 I’ve started listening more to the immersive shows on Wondery. If you haven’t checked it out, you need to do so. Recently, I was able to connect with them and they offered to share a small sample of one of their new shows with the Misfit audience and that is what I want to share with you in this short special episode because it focuses on one of my favorite topics – the stories, successes and failures of businesses and what we can learn from them to help our success. With that in mind, I want to tell you about a new podcast Miniseries on Wondery from Laura Biel, the reporter behind Dr. Death and Bad Batch, called The Vaping Fix. It’s a story of Silicon Valley idealism, reckless capitalism, and how the now infamous e-cigarette company, Juul, managed to hook a new generation on vaping. In 2015, the founders of Juul set out to create the iPod of e-cigarettes, a perfectly designed device that would disrupt the tobacco industry and help traditional smokers quit. But their fruit flavored vaping options, high levels of nicotine, and youthful influencer endorsements lead to consequences that would put millions at risk. “Juuling” became so big among teenagers that it became a verb. And with plooms of vape clouds surrounding schools across the nation, parents, politicians, and the government demanded answers: was this Juul’s plan all along, or did ambition blind them from seeing the pitfalls of their invention? You’re about to hear a preview of The Vaping Fix. While you’re listening, subscribe to The Vaping Fix on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or listen early and ad-free in the Wondery app by going to http://wondery.fm/VF_Misfit. Enjoy!

Vaping is here and parents wonder what we need to know about vaping. What is it? Is it safe? Is it a real problem or is it not a big deal if our teens vape once in a while? Why are they doing it? What is the truth? Sandy Fowler interviews Dr. Kandi Walker to answer these questions and, most importantly, understand what our kids think about vaping, Juuling, and e-cigarettes. Dr. Walker has investigated tobacco use, e-cigarettes, and vaping from a youth perspective with the American Heart Association Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center and she shares her insights with parents on today’s episode of Mighty Parenting.  Our Guest: Kandi Walker  Detailed Show Notes and Support at MightyParenting.com episode 159 Show Supported By:  Sandy Fowler—Struggling to work, volunteer or follow another passion while still loving your family? What's going on with teens and e cigarettes? Dr. Kandi Walker answers this question. Dr. Walker is a Professor in the Department of Communication and part of the Christine Lee Brown Envirome Institute at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. For over 20 years her work has explored the intersection between health and interpersonal communication looking at how people perceive the social world surrounding health issues. Her research primarily focuses on health, family, and interpersonal communication; specifically, her research examines how people talk and behave when an illness is present, how people perceive healthy lifestyles, and how people perceive and communicate about risky health behaviors, such as tobacco. With the American Heart Association’s Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center, Dr. Walker has researched youth perceptions surrounding tobacco use.  Here are some of the questions that we address. ·Is e-cigarette use or vaping an issue for teens? How many youth are using e-cigarettes?  What risks are associated with vaping?  What advice do you have with talking with teens about vaping? How do I talk with my teen about vaping?  There is some evidence that vaping leads smoking initiation. What are your thoughts on this issue?  Is vaping safer than cigarettes?  What is the connection between vaping and using other tobacco products?  What is the difference between e-cigarettes and Juul?  Why is Juuling or vaping unsafe for youth and young adults?  What role do flavors play with vaping?  You can reach Dr. Walker at kandi.walker@louisville.edu. How will we ever escape the vape? What’s the truth behind all of the “smoke and mirrors?” Today’s conversation is another part of our mental health series as we tackle the topic of vaping addiction. Ever since Juuling came on the scene around five years ago, it seems like most young adults have either vaped, or know someone who vapes. Today we’re going to get to the bottom of why vaping has become such a problem in our country, why there has been a sudden rising death toll potentially linked to lung disease caused by vaping, and what we can be doing to help those who are now addicted. The newest fad for youth is dangerous and addictive. While the prevalence of smoking tobacco by teens has decreased significantly over the years, nicotine delivery has resurfaced in a new format. Whether referred to as vaping or juuling, the use of electronic cigarettes has implications for the pediatric nurse as well as for the health of youth. Pediatric Nursing, a peer-reviewed clinical journal for pediatric nurses, published a feature article on vaping in its January/February 2019 issue. The article, entitled, “Vaping: It’s All a Smokescreen,” was authored by Dr. Janice Selekman, Professor Emeritus from the University of Delaware in Wilmington, Delaware. In this episode, Pediatric Nursing Journal Editorial Board member Bernice Mowery, a Nursing Research Scientist from the Inova Health System in Northern Virginia, interviews Dr. Selekman, about the use of e-cigarettes and vaping in teens, the serious health risks associated with vaping, and the important role pediatric nurses can play in preventing or decreasing this practice.Dr. Janice Selekman is Professor Emeritus from the University of Delaware, in Wilmington, Delaware. She is a leader and national expert on multiple topics related to children and adolescents, most notably care of children in the school setting, children with chronic conditions, high-risk behaviors, and mental health.
