In this compelling episode of the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast, Molly reconnects with Katie Lain, founder of Thrive Alcohol Recovery, to explore the power of neuroscience-based strategies for changing your relationship with alcohol. Katie shares her personal recovery story and how the Sinclair Method, a treatment protocol that uses the medication naltrexone, gave her a new lease on life. This conversation goes beyond the medication to highlight the vital role of mindset, habit formation, and long-term commitment to behavior change. Molly and Katie discuss the real-world challenges people face in recovery, the importance of self-compassion, and how small, sustainable steps create the most lasting transformation. What You'll Learn in This Episode:How the Sinclair Method works and why it's effective for both binge and daily drinkersWhy medication is a support tool, not a standalone solutionThe mental space that opens up when cravings start to fadeThe average timeline to regain control and build a peaceful relationship with alcoholUnique challenges for binge drinkers, including compliance and thought patternsThe critical importance of mindset and identifying unconscious beliefsWhat to expect on the journey: setbacks, progress, and learning to keep goingWhy self-compassion and curiosity are non-negotiables for long-term changeKey Message: Naltrexone can be a powerful part of the journey, but it must be paired with thought work, intentional habit-building, and a willingness to take small steps forward—even after setbacks. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, and both Molly and Katie emphasize that you don't have to wait until alcohol becomes a serious problem to start creating change.Resources Mentioned:Learn more about Thrive Alcohol Recovery: thrivealcoholrecovery.comKatie Lain on YouTube, Instagram, and other social platformsMolly's coaching programs and podcast archive: www.mollywatts.comLet's Connect:Website: www.mollywatts.comInstagram: @alcoholminimalistFacebook: Join the Alcohol Minimalists GroupLow risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. Trigger warning: AlcoholAustralians have a complicated relationship with alcohol and it's not helped by how we have created the idea that people only have problems with alcohol if they are complete alcoholics. The reality is that binge drinking and how we associate with alcohol is a lot more nuanced and a lot more destructive than we realise. That is what Kathryn Elliot discovered when she made the decision to quit alcohol after decades of binge drinking. Now, Kathryn is one of Australia's leading alcohol and binge drinking coaches for high-functioning professionals, drawing from her own experience as a former binge drinker. Her expertise is regularly featured in national media, and she works with professionals to change their mindset around alcohol through tailored coaching programs. Kathryn also leads SipSmart corporate workshops on alcohol's impact in the workplace and serves on advisory committees for alcohol awareness initiatives. In this episode she shares:What was her life like before she made her big changeWhat her drinking was like and why it was problematicThe destructive narratives she had inside her head around her drinkingHow her drinking problems started from her youthHow the 'good parts' about that aspect of her life reinforced her binge drinkingThe impact her drinking lifestyle had on her expectations of herselfWhat one of her worst days during that time looked likeWhat changed for her and why she changedThe realisation she had about how it wasn't her faultThe big hurdles she had to overcome to live without alcoholThe cancer diagnosis that further impacted her life shortly after she stopped drinkingThe changes and healing she has gone through recently Key Quotes“Sometimes blackout drinking...It would be embarrassing coming home to baby sitters who would see me in a very drunk state.”“I didn't realise that binge drinking was problematic drinking. John's story is one of transformation, self-awareness, and the pursuit of authenticity. Once caught in the cycle of binge drinking and substance-fuelled nights, he reached a turning point—a moment of realisation at five in the morning, surrounded by people and a lifestyle he no longer resonated with. Though he never identified as an alcoholic, John recognized that alcohol had a profoundly negative impact on his life, pushing him toward change. With a newfound clarity, John embraced sobriety, replacing the chaos of drinking with a passion for photography and storytelling. What began as a personal outlet soon evolved into something greater - Hull and Yorkshire Daily, a widely followed social media platform that captures the beauty, history, and essence of his city. His creative vision became a source of purpose, allowing him to connect with his surroundings and his audience in a meaningful way.Beyond photography, John's journey of self-discovery has led him to explore personal growth, psychology, and the importance of environment. He speaks candidly about cutting out negativity, redefining social circles, and finding strength in solitude. His transformation extends beyond mindset—he has undergone cosmetic procedures, reshaping his outward appearance to reflect the inner change he has undergone.John's story is not just about quitting alcohol - it's about reclaiming identity, embracing self-improvement, and proving that personal growth is a lifelong journey. Through his work and his platform, he continues to inspire others to seek change, challenge societal norms around drinking culture, and create a life that aligns with their values.Click here to text our host, Matt, directly!Believe in People explores addiction, recovery and stigma. Welcome to "Ditch the Lab Coat," the podcast where we break down complex medical topics with leading experts shaping the future of healthcare. In today's episode, we're diving into the nuanced and critical conversation surrounding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) with our distinguished guest, Dr. Susan Rich. With a career spanning decades, Dr. Rich is a trailblazer in child and adolescent psychiatry and an ardent advocate for public health. She's here to shine a light on prenatal alcohol exposure's often overlooked impacts on brain development. Did you know that not only alcohol consumed during pregnancy but even prior to conception can lead to multigenerational health issues? Dr. Rich unpacks how prevalent this is, affecting 1 in 20 children, yet remains largely unrecognized. Throughout our discussion, we'll explore systemic challenges, the myths perpetuated by the alcoholic beverage industry, and most importantly, the critical steps we need to take for prevention and support. Whether you're a healthcare professional, a parent, or just intrigued by one of public health's hidden crises, this episode promises to be both enlightening and empowering. Get ready for a thought-provoking journey as we seek a healthier future for the generations to come.Key Takeaways :The Hidden Impact of Alcohol on Fetal Development Dr. Susan Rich explains that fetal alcohol spectrum disorder affects approximately 1 in 20 children (5% of the population), with far-reaching consequences beyond the commonly known physical characteristics.Early Pregnancy Vulnerability Critical developmental impacts occur as early as the third to fourth week post-conception, often before women know they're pregnant. About 13.5% of childbearing age women in America binge drink, and approximately 50% of pregnancies are unplanned.Beyond Traditional Understanding While medical education traditionally focused on severe cases with facial deformities and intellectual disabilities, Dr. Rich reveals that only 10-15% of affected children show these classic features. The majority have neurodevelopmental issues without obvious physical signs.Male Factor Contribution Alcohol consumption by men up to three months before conception can affect sperm quality through epigenetic modifications, potentially making the embryo more susceptible to alcohol exposure during pregnancy.Economic and Social Impact The alcohol industry generates approximately $220 billion annually, while the cost of caring for just those with full fetal alcohol syndrome (not including the entire spectrum) was estimated at $5.4 billion as of 2003 data.Prevention and Treatment Approaches Dr. Rich advocates for better public health messaging, comprehensive support systems for affected children, and the need for healthcare providers to better understand and recognize the full spectrum of alcohol-related developmental disorders.03:14 - Alcohol's multigenerational impact explained.08:27 - Alcohol's epigenetic effects on offspring.13:17 - Unplanned pregnancies and fetal alcohol syndrome.15:33 - Neural crest and facial development.19:18 - Fetal alcohol, nutrition, and growth.23:04 - Dr. Kathleen Sulick's contributions.25:26 - Alcohol's impact on family events.28:38 - Alcohol's cultural role and societal effects.30:57 - Alcohol's toxicity and informed consent.34:05 - Liquor profits and education funding.37:35 - Rethinking alcohol's role in society.42:56 - Global epidemic: Fetal alcohol impact.45:05 - Supporting neurodivergent youth transitions.47:50 - Taxing alcohol to aid impoverished children.51:01 - Alcohol's Hidden Health Impacts.54:12 - Rethinking alcohol's impact on children.DISCLAMER >>>>>> The Ditch Lab Coat podcast serves solely for general informational purposes and does not serve as a substitute for professional medical services such as medicine or nursing. Resetting our relationship to alcohol Host Curtis Chang and author Ericka Andersen mark Ericka's fourth year of sobriety by asking a thought-provoking question: How's your relationship with alcohol? Together, they explore the challenges of alcohol dependency, why it might be time to reevaluate your connection to drinking, and how to lovingly support others on the same journey. Using the metaphor of alcohol as a “person” woven into our memories and social experiences, they explore the grief that can accompany “breaking up” with alcohol and how the Spirit of God's still, small voice is sometimes drowned out by cocktail hour. If you've ever questioned whether your life might be better without alcohol, this episode offers practical insights and gentle encouragement to take a closer look. In this podcast episode, Dr. Fred Moss interviews Duncan Bhaskaran Brown, a motivational speaker, author, and dancer who transformed his life after two decades of overindulgence. From sharing the stage with S-Club to being the Mayor of his hometown, Duncan shares his unique journey and how he kicked unhealthy habits through training with the Easyway clinic. The episode promises humor, personal anecdotes, and insights into overcoming excess. Along with Duncan's entertaining jokes (despite potential kebab stains on his favorite t-shirt), listeners can expect a blend of wisdom and laughter in this engaging conversation about pushing overindulgence out of life. Key takeaways from this podcast interview: After 20+ years of heavy drinking sparked by social anxiety, Duncan achieved sobriety in his late thirties through self-reflection. Realizing helping others quit drinking aligned perfectly with his skills, he felt compelled to share his greatest personal success. Duncan takes a holistic view beyond just alcohol cessation to build coping methods for stress and emotions formerly managed through drinking. With binge drinking so common yet poorly addressed, he collaborates with coaches and companies to incorporate alcohol's performance impact into training. Childhood or adult trauma strongly correlate to problematic drinking, but social reasons like fitting in also drive overindulging. He strives to meet clients where they are to map a personalized path, feeling no single system universally works. Integration of approaches is key. While some need medical help stopping, most people Duncan aids still function though alcohol causes problems. His support reduces withdrawal risks. In today's episode, we have Hadley, who speaks about her first drink at 14 and how it would remain complicated until quitting at 41. As life progressed so did the drinking from the binge drinking culture in college to the mommy wine culture that followed. After another night of broken promises to herself about remaining present and aware at a party, she blacked out and the hangover lasted several days and the thoughts of quitting started to become more real. Hadley discusses how it was in a 2-year span that she was working on her relationship with alcohol and after a day drinking session at the lake house she began her journey of sobriety in August of 2021 and everything has changed since then. A new report found Americans are not the biggest binge drinkers in the world!
Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram is in for Jim. After a quick GOP debate preview, Scot and Greg tackle three heavy issues. First, they highlight a progressive cities climate group that admits it wants to end meat and dairy consumption and private vehicle ownership - preferably by the end of this decade. They also want drastic reductions in clothes purchases and air travel, and 14 U.S. cities have already signed on to this global initiative. They also dissect a new poll showing 56 percent of Republicans and 20 percent of Democrats think our nation is in danger of failing and discuss why that's the case. Finally, they shudder at a new report from the University of Michigan showing huge increases in binge drinking and marijuana use among Americans aged 35-50. And the numbers among younger adults is pretty bad too.Timestamps:0:58 - Previewing Wednesday's GOP presidential debate3:11 - New global progressive cities climate group admits radical 'green' goals on meat and dairy consumption, private vehicle ownership and much more.10:42 - New York Times poll shows 37 percent of Americans and 56 percent of Republicans think the U.S. is in danger of failing.18:20 - University of Michigan survey shows record binge drinking and marijuana use among Americans aged 35-50.
