In this episode of GynoCurious, your host, Dr. Amy Novatt, delves deep into one of the most challenging aspects of her time as a medical resident. She discusses witnessing numerous instances of abuse and mistreatment by older white male physicians towards their female patients. Driven by her recent experiences and a compelling performance by today's guest, Kate Valentine, Amy is moved to bring this crucial issue to the forefront. Kate Valentine, a multi-talented performance artist, joins the discussion to talk about her one-woman show, "A Woman of a Certain Rage." The performance, which deeply resonated with Dr. Novatt, highlights the struggles and traumas faced by women, particularly within medical settings. Kate shares her journey of confronting and healing from her own traumas, emphasizing the importance of speaking out and reclaiming one's power, especially during midlife. Together, Amy and Kate explore themes of abuse, the patriarchy in the medical field, and the power dynamics that affect women's health and wellness. They both advocate for increased awareness, self-advocacy, and a collective effort to dismantle harmful systems. Closing on a poignant note, the conversation underscores the need for healing, speaking truth, and finding joy and pleasure amidst life's challenges. Questions of comments? Lullabies. Simple, soothing… nonsense. Right? Wrong. Here we're getting behind the importance of music and singing in a baby's development. India speaks to Dr Nina Polytimou about her research into how music can help with speech and communication and also be a powerful tool for bonding. India then visits a Singing Mamas group to hear how coming together as mothers to sing is a powerful, important, and missing slice of community. Kate Valentine, the founder, describes the impact it has on maternal mental health.Presented by: India Rakusen. Producers: India Rakusen And Georgia Arundell Series producer: Ellie Sans. Notes: Even though Kate wanted a resolution, the song insisted on being what it is -- a way to stay in the storm. She talks with me about how that felt, and what happened as she kept listening. We explore further -- how do you become a songleader when that's not how you view yourself? How do you write songs, when that feels scary-impossible? What is it about singing together that offers healing, and why is Kate herself drawn to doing things that help people in difficult moments? Where do songs live? I left this conversation with respect and excitement tumbling over each other... I hope you, too, enjoy hearing Kate's perspective. Songwriter Info: Kate Valentine is a registered nurse and founder of Singing Mamas - a national non-profit for maternal well-being, bringing singing groups across the UK and the globe to women and mothers. Kate started with one group in 2011 and while struggling as a single mum to 3 sons and working nights shifts, she set about to get singing mamas free and referred to all new and expectant mums across the UK. There are now more than 200 leaders across 8 countries, with Singing Mamas programmes being delivered in over 50 local authorities, either as community groups or on-prescription through the national health service (NHS). Kate is most passionate about bringing the 'untrained' musician into the work of song sharing, and is driven by a determination to re-normalise a singing culture, where it has been lost. Notes: I love the way this song by Kate Valentine has both motion and deep stillness. It carries acceptance and conviction, and I simply love having it in my head. How did she do this??? Next week, in conversation with Kate, she tells how she wrote this specific song, as well as how she managed to convince herself to write music in the first place, which felt like a near-impossible stretch. We first welcomed Kate Valentine to the Singing Teachers Talk podcast back on episode 85. But now, Kate is back with us in episode 135, to tell us all about Valentine Voice Care Lewes, a centre for vocal wellness development, prevention, and rehabilitation, which she has built in East Sussex KEY TAKEAWAYS The mission of Valentine Voice Care is to offer unparalleled care and support to anyone who has a voice through a biopsychosocial approach to cater to the needs of a really wide range of different groups. A biopsychosocial approach addresses complex interactions between biological, psychological, and social factors to better understand health, illness, and voice care delivery. Valentine Voice Care came about from Kate's own experience with vocal injury which had such a profound effect on her. She discovered that those who are mute for a period of time find it hard to express their opinion or personality which can feel isolating. Kate has seen an increase in psychological troubles with singers and musicians since the pandemic. Having had a long time not working, they had to step back into an insecure industry which had less work. The 5 pillars of care that Valentine Voice Care are aiming for are prevention through education, early identification, rehabilitation through targeted therapies for each stage of recovery, specialist vocal coaching, and encouraging long term vocal health through maintenance. BEST MOMENTS ‘It felt like hell, I was so lonely and felt so stripped of my identity because of my vocal injury' ‘This shrinking pool of opportunities means everyone is anxious' ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: valentinevoicecare.com Social Media: Handle: @valentinevoicecare Contact Kate to Book Your Treatment or Service: kate@valentinevoicecare.com info@valentinevoicecare.com Discount Code: Use the code BAST50 for a 50% discount off VOCAL TRIAGE with Kate Valentine (expires 25th December 2023) Relevant Links & Mentions: Practitioners mentioned: Hannah Sanderson; Daisy Duval; Julie Cooper; Pemma Ashdown; Chloe Spencer; Amy Hunter; Ann Coxhead; Gillian Ramm; Louisa Barry; Philippa Poulton; Leigh Bisset; Rebecca Meitlis; Charlotte Mobbs; Lee Bisset; Rebecca Carolyn Andrews; Sian Winstanley Feldenkrais Method: https://feldenkrais.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 85 Vocal Health Red Flags Explained with Kate Valentine Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep.32 The Bio-Psycho-Social Model with Stephen King Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep 68 Training Transgender Voices with Dr Felix Graham Vocal Health Education: https://www.vocalhealth.co.uk/ British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM): https://www.bapam.org.uk/ Voice Care Centre: https://voicecarecentre.co.uk/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep.39 Osteopathy for Singers (and Joint Farts) with Chloe Spencer Marshall Light Studio: https://marshalllightstudio.com/ Do you have a burning question on the voice or being a singing teacher? Vocal Massage and Laryngeal Manual Therapist Kate Valentine is today's guest. Kate, who runs her own treatment space called Valentine Voice Care, discusses how to spot the signs your student may have vocal health issues and how to prevent vocal injury. KEY TAKEAWAYS Whilst enjoying a successful career as a principal artist on the international operatic stage , Kate sustained a vocal injury: a career-defining moment which sparked a fascination with vocal health, rehabilitation, and the long-term benefits of manual therapy for voice. Kate noticed that, among other things, she was having to take a long time to fully recover after a vocal performance. That is such an easy red flag we can identify as a singing teacher. Kate's onboarding process involves asking a lot of questions so she gets to know people and their voices as well as she can. It's so important to make students aware of their own voice because then they can identify the problems. As well as running her own ‘Valentine Voice Care' treatment spaces in Seaford and Glasgow, and managing a busy client list including English National Opera, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Scottish Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Voces8, and The Dunedin Consort, Kate also works with two multidisciplinary voice teams: the Voice Care Centre (London) and Clyde Consulting Rooms (Glasgow). Notes: This song, about settling into the unknown and experiencing that as home, is one that has been singing in my head throughout this last year of transition for me. The delight of letting my voice slide helps me physically experience the release, and the complex harmonies keep my sense of focus and unsettledness... as though I'm practicing finding that home in the middle of the unknown. I think this is a great song for becoming very aware of how your voice feels in your body as you sing, because you'll get used to the words fairly quickly -- and then you can shift the focus to the sensations as you sing. (A sneaky form of somatic meditation, but you don't need to notice that, unless you want to!) Songwriter Info: (Snitched directly from Anni's website) Anni Zylstra (she/they) is a folk singer, basketmaker, farmer, and weaver of community based in the traditional homelands of the Oceti Sakowin and Ho-chunk in SW so-called Wisconsin. In the spirit of folk, they believe that everyone can sing, and that using our voices to make beauty together is one of most pleasurable, accessible, and world building activities people can do together. Anni's facilitation is rooted in anticapitalist values, play, a queer nature-based lens, and more than a decade of classical musical training, ethnomusicology, and community leadership. They currently farm on the West Fork of the Kickapoo River, where they grow basket willow, perennial food crops, raise ducks, host events and classes folk education style, and lead Ember, a community choir that sings Balkan, Georgian, and polyphonic English music in La Farge, WI. People are often skeptical about the UFO phenomenon but phenomenon but they shouldn't be. At least a subset of UFO reports of around 5 percent are from credible witnesses and frequently backed by hard data such as radar tapes or gun camera film. For example astronauts Gordon Cooper and Buzz Aldrin as well as Harvard astronomer Clyde Tombaugh have all publicly described their UFO sightings. But the interesting thing is that we may be on the threshold of understanding the technology of UFOs. In a nutshell it was once thought that the idea of extra dimensions was strictly the domain of science fiction. That has all changed in the last several decades as physicists appear to be closing in on a final ''theory of everything'' which suggests we may live in an eleven dimensional universe. These cutting edge theories are now being tested at the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator in Geneva, Switzerland. Among the theories being tested is one called Warped Geometry by a Harvard physicist which may allow for fast interstellar travel in the extra dimensions. Spectrographic data from actual UFO sightings would confirm if these craft are using technology we are now on the cusp of unraveling.

He is now writing and teaching composition in Beijing. http://marcsima.blogspot.com/ Listen to the new interview with Martin Willis from podcastufo.com here: http://podcastufo.com/podcast/32-marc-sima-texas-lights/ The Paul Medoc Series follows the adventures of a Canadian spy from the 1990 Gulf War until the present day. "Texas Lights" is the first volume published. It takes place much later, during the year 2008, following the sighting by citizens of Stephenville, TX of strange lights in the sky: "Paul Medoc is now in his 40s. He has risen through the ranks of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service battling across the globe, both the enemies of Canada, and the complex moral implications of his actions. In any case Medoc has no time for Ufology and consider his mission to Erath County, TX as a sort of strange and risky vacation. He does not know yet that 4 days later his life would have been changed for ever. The Stephenville Lights were, at the time, probably the most talked about UFO event since the 1997 mass sighting in Phoenix, AZ. Witnesses reported that an immense ship was seen heading toward the Presidential ranch some 70 miles away. Few minutes later, the UFO was seen again being chased by a couple of F16. The premise of this novel for me was to try to imagine what would have happened if the President of the United States had been at his summer residence that day and if indeed a mysterious giant ship had breached the strict post 9/11 no fly zone protecting the President at all time. What would have happened if the same evening the Prime Minister of Canada had been scheduled to arrive shortly for an official visit and if the US had refused afterward to provide any information about the incident? I hope the reader will enjoy the fast pace novel as much as I did writing it!" Marc Sima To learn more about our guest please go to: http://marcsima.blogspot.com/

Charis Brown Malloy experienced her initial and very unexpected spiritual awakening while in college. She feared for her sanity until her seeming "hallucinations" were systematically verified as valid information. Her "coming out of the closet" book, Journal of a Starseed, documents this transition into the esoteric side of life, which occurred as she led a parallel "normal" life, earning master's degrees in health and psychology - to angels, ghosts, faeries, and an exorcism she performed on a child's playroom included. The second half of the book, entitled "All Roads Lead to Aliens", describes Charis's initial awakening to the extraterrestrial presence and her realization that she was a life long contactee as well as a Starseeded soul. On a continuous journey of discovery that in no way ends with the publication of Journal of a Starseed, Charis is now an author, healer, and lecturer, as well as an administrator on the esoteric forum CosmicYou at www.cosmicyou.us . Her website is www.journalofastarseed.com
