American astronomer, discoverer of Pluto (1906–1997)

What's it like to stand at the edge of human knowledge, where we don't know what leap forward in understanding the next technological innovation will herald? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome Dr. Melodie Kao, resident radio astronomer at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ, where Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto back in 1930. (And if you're scratching your heads saying, “What's a radio astronomer doing at an optical observatory?” you're not alone. Short answer: Melodie convinced them they wanted one, and that it should be her!”) As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, the amazing discovery by the NEID Spectrograph at the WIYN telescope at Kitt Peak Observatory of a planet 9 times the mass of Earth orbiting a sun-like star 49 light years away with an orbital period of just 31 days. Melodie explains the precision of the measurement required to discover a planet at that distance, and shares one of her own recent discoveries using a technique called very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI). In a groundbreaking effort she strung together 39 radio dishes across the northern hemisphere of Earth in a multi-observatory effort to create an Earth-sized telescope (similar to the technique that was used to create the first image of a black hole) and pointed it at a brown dwarf and measured its magnetic fields and radiation belts (like our Van Allen belts). For comparison, the effort was like measuring a pea perched on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco while standing on the Statue of Liberty in NYC. The trio discusses the importance of the discovery of the Van Allen belts, and how that allowed us to plot trajectories that avoided the worst of that radiation for Apollo astronauts on their journeys to the Moon. For our first audience question, Ari from North Greene High School in Tennessee asks, “What is the percentage of possible exoplanets that are similar to the earth's atmosphere, placed in their solar system (within a similar area of their respective Goldilocks zone), gravity, etc.? And how long would it take to hypothetically get to them?” That turns out to be a very complicated question, and Melodie knows someone who has devoted her entire career to answering it. It's one of the questions that drove the creation of the James Webb Space Telescope and is the basis of the Drake Equation. The bottom line, though, is that we don't know yet, and until we find a rocky planet with an Earthlike atmosphere orbiting a sun-like star outside of our solar system, it will remain unanswerable. Next, Charles asks Melodie how she became an astronomer, especially since she'd always planned on being an architect. She even went to MIT to become one, but she missed studying physics, which she realized she truly loved. MIT had just finished constructing their Center for Theoretical Physics, and Melodie shares the story of how she convinced MIT to bend the rules and let switch her major to Physics while continuing to study architecture. When she attended a lecture by a grad student about galaxy clusters, and learned how you could back out the formation history of a cluster of galaxies by looking at the gradients of colors generated by starlight, she realized astronomy was a way to unlock the secrets of the universe. Our next question comes from Alex at North Greene: What are the conditions necessary for life in the universe? It's a question without an easy answer, but the conversation it spawns is worth your time to listen to. It leads Melodie to talk about her love of exploring the natural world and how she co-created a Wilderness Astronomy class. She's also a guide for off-trail, high route backpacking trips where you don't know what's coming next and you need to rely on your instincts, curiosity and bravery as you explore the world, and the universe, around you. If you'd like to know more about what Melodie is up to, she's not on social media but you can check out her website. You've also got an invitation to visit her at the Lowell Observatory for a personal tour! We hope you enjoy this episode of The LIUniverse, and, if you do, please support us on Patreon. Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto - 84 years after star-spotters first began their hunt for a ninth planet in our solar system, the elusive ‘Planet X' on 18th February 1930. The 24-year-old made the groundbreaking discovery at the Lowell Observatory, Arizona, just one week into a task that had mired other researchers for decades. That said, it was later realised that Pluto had been spotted on previous occasions, yet astronomers had mistakenly overlooked its significance. In this episode, The Retrospectors reveal how the ‘planet' came to be named by an 11-year-old British girl; explain why it is no longer a planet at all, but has been downgraded to ‘dwarf planet'; and consider Walt Disney's influence on its place in the public affections… Further Reading: ‘Clyde Tombaugh: the astronomer who discovered Pluto' (BBC Sky at Night Magazine, 2020): https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/space-science/clyde-tombaugh-astronomer-discovered-pluto ‘Obituary: Clyde W. Pluto is at its best now. It’s lining up opposite the Sun. It rises around sunset and is in the sky all night. It’s brightest for the year as well. Don’t bother looking for it, though, unless you have a good-sized telescope. Clyde Tombaugh was using a good-sized telescope when he discovered Pluto, in 1930. He’d been searching for a possible planet beyond Neptune for about a year, from Lowell Observatory in Arizona. When he found it, the little world was moving through Gemini. Almost a century later, Pluto has advanced only a third of the way around the sky. That’s because Pluto is so remote that it takes 248 years to orbit the Sun – and to complete a single loop through the constellations. Today, it’s in the southwestern corner of Capricornus. Pluto doesn’t move evenly across the sky. Its distance from the Sun varies from about 30 to almost 50 times Earth’s distance – a difference of 1.8 billion miles. It moves a lot faster when it’s closest to the Sun, so it crosses more of the starry background. Pluto won’t complete its first orbit since its discovery until the year 2178 – when it will once again appear in Gemini. For now, although you can’t see it, you can at least see its location. It’s between the handle of the “teapot” formed by the constellation Sagittarius, and the wide triangle that marks Capricornus. Tonight, that puts it not far to the upper right of the Moon. On our show, we reach back into history and family stories from the past for a lot of our content. Our goal is not to bask in the things of yesteryear, but rather to find inspiration to move forward toward a distant and unsure horizon. Lately, I've noticed a lot of people looking backward, wishing to go back to a particular time and place that they misremember as simple, sound and safe. All forward motion leads to unchartered territory, no different that the unchartered territory we might want to think were the good old days. Knowing our history is important, not a comfortable place to stay, but as a toll to help you find where you are going. withinpodcast.com Check out all we have to offer at withinpodcast.com! The brightest star in Canis Minor (the little dog) has some things in common with the brightest star in Canis Major (the big dog). This week is the anniversary of Clyde Tombaugh taking the pictures that led to the discovery of Pluto.
O astrónomo que descobriu Plutão morreu faz hoje 26 anos.
The “twin” stars of Gemini lead the Moon across the sky tonight. They stack up above the Moon at nightfall. Pollux, the brighter twin, is closer to the Moon. Although Pollux and Castor are known as the twins, they actually represent only the heads of the two figures. The bodies of the twins are parallel to the horizon in early evening, stretching to the right of Pollux and Castor. None of the other stars in Gemini's classical outline is quite as bright as Pollux or Castor, but some of them are interesting anyway. Several are giants — stars that have puffed up as they neared the ends of their lives. Others are binaries — two stars held close together by their mutual gravitational pull. And some are even more dramatic. Delta Geminorum, which represents the pelvis of Pollux, is an example. It's a triple star — three stars in a single system. The main star is beginning the transition from the prime of life to the giant stage. And the system has a place in astronomy history: In 1930, young astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto lurking near it. Zeta Geminorum, the knee of Pollux, is a Cepheid variable. Once every 10 days or so, it puffs in and out like a beating heart. It's huge and blindingly bright, and near the end of its life. It's probably not quite massive enough to explode as a supernova, but no one knows for sure. Either way, its end is nigh — no more than a few million years away. The audio quality can be a little wonky this week. We've identified the issue and resolved it. Sorry about that. We've heard for years that gamers are violent. But what if gamers were more peaceful in game than the people around them in real life? A really interesting new study has identified that gamers behave differently in EVE Online depending on the type of community they live in.The Nirvana Nevermind baby isn't happy about his nudes being plastered all over record stores and the internet. Now he's suing. We're not legal beagles, but we've got opinions.Roblox is bad. It isn't the simple gameplay, the child targeted community, or the memes. Davatzes joined the company as CEO in 1983 just as A&E Networks was formed through the merger of fledgling cable channels Entertainment Network, owned by RCA and the Rockefeller family, and ARTS Network, owned by Hearst and ABC. A+E Networks today is a 50-50 joint venture of the Walt Disney Co. and Hearst Corp. Davatzes served as CEO emeritus. Davatzes led the company's launch of the signature A&E Network (an amalgam of Arts and Entertainment) in 1984 and History Channel in 1995 (History formally dropped “Channel” from its moniker in 2008). He served as CEO of the parent company through 2005, when he was succeeded by protege Abbe Raven, who started at the company as a secretary. Davatzes was known for promoting educational outreach and the importance of industry R&D during his run at A&E Networks. The company later expanded to include the Lifetime cable channel as well as more recent entries like lifestyle channel FYI and Lifetime Movie Network. Disney executive chairman Bob Iger hailed him as a “towering figure in the early days of cable television (who helped) build some of the most iconic brands in the media landscape.” Iger added that he was “a person of true integrity.” He died in Wilton, Connecticut.24th August 2021 – Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts passes away at 80 - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-25/rolling-stones-drummer-charlie-watts-dies-at-age-80/100404658Charlie Watts, the drummer who provided the backbone of the Rolling Stones' songs for more than half a century, has died. Watts "passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family," his publicist Bernard Doherty said. "Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones, as one of the greatest drummers of his generation." The quiet, elegantly dressed Watts was often ranked with Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and a handful of others as a premier rock drummer, respected worldwide for his muscular, swinging style as the band rose from its scruffy beginnings to international superstardom. He joined the Stones early in 1963 and remained over the next 60 years, ranked just behind Jagger and Keith Richards as the group's longest lasting and most essential members. Watts stayed on, and largely held himself apart, through the drug abuse, creative clashes and ego wars that helped kill founding member Brian Jones, drove bassist Bill Wyman and Jones' replacement Mick Taylor to quit and otherwise made being in the Stones the most exhausting of jobs. The Stones began, Watts said, "as white blokes from England playing black American music" but quickly evolved their own distinctive sound. Watts was a jazz drummer in his early years and never lost his affinity for the music he first loved, heading his own jazz band and taking on numerous other side projects. He had his eccentricities — Watts liked to collect cars even though he didn't drive and would simply sit in them in his garage. But he was a steadying influence on stage and off as the Stones defied all expectations by rocking well into their 70s, decades longer than their old rivals The Beatles. He died in London with his family around him.25th August 2021 – Linux turns 30 - https://www.zdnet.com/article/linus-torvalds-on-linuxs-30th-birthday/ In 1991, Unix was an important but secondary x86 operating system. That year, on August 25, a mild-mannered Finnish graduate student named Linus Benedict Torvalds announced on the Usenet group comp.os.minix that he was working on "a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones." No one knew it, not even Torvalds, but the technology was going to change forever. Thirty years later, Linux rules IT. Almost all major websites -- including Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia -- run on Linux. It's the same with the clouds. Even on Microsoft's own Azure, the most popular operating system is Linux. As for supercomputers, all 500 of the world's fastest 500 supercomputers run Linux. Thanks to Android, Linux is also the most popular end-user operating system. Not bad for a hobby operating system! In those very first days, Linux wasn't formally known as Linux. Torvalds explained, "Linux was my working name, but I never wanted to release it as Linux. Linux was a perfectly good working name, but if I actually used it as the official one, people would think that I am an egomaniac and wouldn't take it seriously. So I chose this very bad name, "Freax," for "Free Unix." Fortunately, the first Linux administrator Ari Lemmk, decided Freax was a silly name too. Hence, he actually named it Linux because he thought this internal project name was Torvalds first choice.Remembrances25th August 1822 – William Herschel - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_HerschelGerman-born British astronomer and composer. He frequently collaborated with his younger sister and fellow astronomer Caroline Lucretia Herschel. Born in the Electorate of Hanover, William Herschel followed his father into the military band of Hanover, before emigrating to Great Britain in 1757 at the age of nineteen. Herschel constructed his first large telescope in 1774, after which he spent nine years carrying out sky surveys to investigate double stars. Herschel published catalogues of nebulae in 1802 (2,500 objects) and in 1820 (5,000 objects). The resolving power of the Herschel telescopes revealed that many objects called nebulae in the Messier catalogue were actually clusters of stars. On 13 March 1781 while making observations he made note of a new object in the constellation of Gemini. This would, after several weeks of verification and consultation with other astronomers, be confirmed to be a new planet, eventually given the name of Uranus. This was the first planet to be discovered since antiquity, and Herschel became famous overnight. As a result of this discovery, George III appointed him Court Astronomer. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and grants were provided for the construction of new telescopes. Herschel pioneered the use of astronomical spectrophotometry, using prisms and temperature measuring equipment to measure the wavelength distribution of stellar spectra. In the course of these investigations, Herschel discovered infrared radiation. Other work included an improved determination of the rotation period of Mars, the discovery that the Martian polar caps vary seasonally, the discovery of Titania and Oberon (moons of Uranus) and Enceladus and Mimas (moons of Saturn). Herschel was made a Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order in 1816. He was the first President of the Royal Astronomical Society when it was founded in 1820. He died at the age of 83 at Observatory House, Windsor Road, Slough Herschel's epitaph is Coelorum perrupit claustra (He broke through the barriers of the heavens).Famous Birthdays25th August 1819 – Allan Pinkerton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_PinkertonScottish–American detective and spy, best known for creating the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Pinkerton first became interested in criminal detective work while wandering through the wooded groves around Dundee, looking for trees to make barrel staves, when he came across a band of counterfeiters, who may have been affiliated with the notorious Banditti of the Prairie. After observing their movements for some time he informed the local sheriff, who arrested them. This later led to Pinkerton being appointed, in 1849, as the first police detective in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. In 1850, he partnered with Chicago attorney Edward Rucker in forming the North-Western Police Agency, which later became Pinkerton & Co, and finally Pinkerton National Detective Agency, still in existence today as Pinkerton Consulting and Investigations, a subsidiary of Securitas AB. Pinkerton's business insignia was a wide open eye with the caption "We never sleep." As the US expanded in territory, rail transport increased. Pinkerton's agency solved a series of train robberies during the 1850s, first bringing Pinkerton into contact with George McClellan, then Chief Engineer and Vice President of the Illinois Central Railroad, and Abraham Lincoln, the company's lawyer. When the Civil War began, Pinkerton served as head of the Union Intelligence Service during the first two years, heading off an alleged assassination plot in Baltimore, Maryland while guarding Abraham Lincoln on his way to Washington, D.C. as well as identifying troop numbers in military campaigns. His agents often worked undercover as Confederate soldiers and sympathizers to gather military intelligence. Pinkerton himself served on several undercover missions as a Confederate soldier using the alias Major E.J. Allen. He worked across the Deep South in the summer of 1861, focusing on fortifications and Confederate plans. This counterintelligence work done by Pinkerton and his agents is comparable to the work done by today's U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agents in which Pinkerton's agency is considered an early predecessor. He was succeeded as Intelligence Service chief by Lafayette Baker; the Intelligence Service was the predecessor of the U.S. Secret Service. His work led to the establishment of the Federal secret service. Despite his agency's later reputation for anti-labor activities, Pinkerton himself was heavily involved in pro-labor politics as a young man. Though Pinkerton considered himself pro-labor, he opposed strikes and distrusted labor unions. He was born in Gorbals, Glasgow.Events of Interest25th August 1957- The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly premiered in Japan - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204691/ A star is born! On this day in 1957 (in Japan), The Invisible Man Vs. The Human Fly took to the silver screen for a monster of a pairing! Directed by Mitsuo Murayama, the SciFi/Fantasy starred Ryûji Shinagawa and Yoshirô Kitahara; and here's the plot summary: "A ruthless serial killer with a peculiar method of stalking and killing his victims comes face to face with a police officer turned invisible by a scientific experiment. Who will emerge triumphant?" In the late 1950s, in the United States this film was announced, and stills were published, under the English language title "The Murdering Mite." This film shares part of its Japanese title with the Japanese release of the much better-known 1958 U.S. science fiction film The Fly, which was released in Japan as Fear of the Fly Man (ハエ男の恐怖 Hae Otoko no Kyōfu), though with the 'Fly' in "Fly Man" spelled in katakana rather than kanji characters. While both films feature "fly men," The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly actually predates the latter film by almost an entire year.25th August 1989 – Voyager 2 spacecraft makes its closest approach to Neptune, the last planet in the Solar System at the time, due to Pluto being within Neptune's orbit from 1979 to 1999 - https://www.wired.com/2010/08/0825voyager2-neptune/ Voyager 2 makes its closest encounter with Neptune, passing just 3,000 miles above the cloud tops of the most distant planet in our solar system. The Voyager 2 space probe has been our most productive unmanned space voyage. It visited all four of the outer planets and their systems of moons and rings, including the first visits to previously unexplored Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 2 found four rings and evidence for ring arcs, or incomplete rings, above Neptune. That means all four of the gas giants in our solar system have rings. Neptune's, however, are very meager compared to the magnificent rings around Saturn. In the late 19th century, astronomers thought that an unseen Planet X was influencing the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. The observed positions of the two planets and their calculated positions differed. Among those astronomers convinced of the existence of Planet X was Clyde Tombaugh. In 1930 while scanning areas of the sky for Planet X, he found Pluto. When Voyager 2 flew by Neptune, it took very precise measurements of Neptune's mass and found it to be about 0.5 percent less massive than previous estimates. When the orbits of Uranus and Neptune were recalculated using the more accurate mass figure, it became clear that the imprecise number for Neptune -- and not the gravity of an unseen planet -- had caused the observed orbital discrepancies. After its encounter with Neptune, the spacecraft was rechristened the Voyager Interstellar Mission by NASA to take measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field, plasma and charged-particle environment. But mostly it's searching for the heliopause, the distance at which the solar wind becomes subsumed by the more general interstellar wind.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comSupport via Podhero- https://podhero.com/podcast/449127/nerds-amalgamated See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

SUMMARY Astrobiologist, planetary scientist, and award-winning science writer David Grinspoon captures the bigger-than-life true adventure story of the pioneer flight to Pluto in Chasing New Horizons: Inside the Epic First Mission to Pluto. According to Grinspoon and coauthor Alan Stern, “The effort to explore Pluto was an unlikely and sometimes harrowing story, with so many unexpected twists and turns, seeming dead ends, and narrow escapes that it hardly seems possible that it actually succeeded—but it did.” At a now-legendary dinner at an Italian restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland, a small group of “Plutophiles” meets to strategize how to increase public interest in planning a space mission to Pluto. The same people eventually become the New Horizons team. But first, they implement letter-writing campaign to flood NASA Headquarters and political stakeholders, giving evidence of broad public interest in Pluto. They also organize conferences for presenting serious academic papers about Pluto exploration. Finally, after years of fighting an uphill David-and-Goliath battle, the New Horizons team celebrates its victory against Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). But not for long. Winning the tough, competitive bid is only the beginning. The underdogs continue to face hundreds of unprecedented challenges, and they must avoid even the smallest snag, or they risk losing the opportunity to build the first spacecraft to reach Pluto. Somehow, however, against all odds, in 2006 New Horizons is on the launchpad in Florida ready to make the epic first flyby mission to planet Pluto, marking the beginning of reigniting the thrill of space exploration. In the words of authors Stern and Grinspoon, “Nothing quite like New Horizons has occurred in a generation—the raw exploration of new worlds. And nothing quite like it is currently planned to happen, ever again.” KEY PLAYERS & TERMS Alan Stern – known as “Mr. Pluto” and THE insider of the mission Clyde Tombaugh – a poor young farm poor from Kansas and unknown American hero who discovers Pluto at age 24 “Pluto Underground” – a group of young underdogs who politick NASA to fund a mission to the outer planet Ted Nichols – a high-school teenager who starts a “Save-the-Pluto-Mission” website and uses his own initiative, pluck, and a knack for publicity to persuade NASA to explore Pluto JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) – (in Pasadena, California) the premiere U.S. center for planetary exploration that is behind almost all the greatest space missions APL (Applied Physics Laboratory) – (in Baltimore, Maryland) a small upstart lab that outcompetes JPL by pushing the boundaries to design a less expensive spacecraft ready to launch more quickly New Horizons – spacecraft the size of a baby grand piano (with no moving parts) designed by APL for the 9-year flyby mission to Pluto Bill Nye, the Science Guy – one of many celebrity influencers who helps ignite and communicate public excitement and interest in Pluto exploration Brian May – guitar player from rock band Queen and card-carrying PhD astrophysicist who is involved in the science team and who writes an original song for New Horizons Gravity assist – a cost-saving technique using the gravity of Jupiter to fling New Horizons out towards Pluto Hibernation mode – another cost-saving technique that shuts down communication with the spacecraft intermittently, resulting in a decreased need for the ship’s energy in the air and fewer ground-team personnel on Earth QUOTES FROM GRINSPOON “Once a mission gets flown, then everybody pulls behind it.” “The public reaction to the exploration of Pluto helped to reawaken something partially forgotten since Voyager and Apollo: that people across the world love bold space exploration, are inspired by missions to never before explored places, and that such missions even have the power to inspire people and change lives.” BUY Chasing New Horizons: Inside the Epic First Mission to Pluto RECOMMENDATION Watch "Pluto in a Minute" YouTube videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6BBgLGgB7g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1qUMY1oEvY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-zurr9PHKg&t=8s Connect with us on social media! Discovered by an American farm boy in his early 20s, Pluto has captivated us for quite some time... but astronomers would later discover many other strange worlds within the outer boundaries of the solar system. And the mere existence of these worlds led to one of the greatest controveries in the history of astronomy. *PHOTO CAPTION: * Pluto's mountain range (11,000 foot elevation) at sunset. *REFERENCES: * *"Out of Darkness: The Planet Pluto" * Clyde Tombaugh *"How I Killed Pluto and Why it Had it Coming" * Michael E. On this day in 1930, junior astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered that Pluto was a planet. Learn even more about Pluto on the episode of Stuff You Missed in History Class, Pluto: The Demoted Dwarf Planet. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
Clyde Tombaugh spent much of his life peering at telescope data. He discovered Pluto in 1930, and he spent years poking around the outer solar system. But as the scientific community began to dream about launching a vehicle into the great beyond, he focused his gaze much closer to home. At the time, the smaller stuff in our immediate space environment remained largely a mystery. People like Tombaugh worried whether orbiting gunk would make spaceflight that much harder.

The Trans-Neptunian object named Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in February 1930 and became the 9th planet in our solar system, until it was downgraded in September 2006. It takes Pluto 248 years to complete a single orbit around the sun which means that for the entire time it was considered a planet it only aged by a third of a Plutoid year; it was 76 years old... facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fellowpassengerspodcast/ twitter: https://twitter.com/Fellowpodcast instagram: https://instagram.com/fellowpassengerspodcast Produced By: http://www.displacestudios.com/ For all enquiries email: fellowpassengerspodcast@gmail.com

In this episode we examine the fates of Phaeton, Vulcan and Pluto as they were thought of by Olbers, Le Verrier and Clyde Tombaugh. We also examine the observations of James Craig Watson, introduce William Henry Pickering and follow the work of Percival Lowell.
In 1930, Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto: our Solar System's ninth planet. For over 60 years, the Plutonian system was the only one known beyond Neptune, and Pluto retained its planetary status for all that time despite its diminutive size. Yet an explosion of exoplanets and of other Trans-Neptunian Objects within our own Solar System beginning in the 1990s meant that we'd need to reconsider what it means to truly be a "planet". The debate still rages today, but astronomers agree: when it comes to the planetary club, Pluto simply doesn't belong. Here's why!
Pluto was discovered in 1930 by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. It was considered the ninth planet from the Sun. In 1992 however, this became a question after several other objects similar in size to Pluto were discovered beyond it's orbit in what's known as the Kuiper belt. The International Astronomical Union, the internationally recognized authority for assigning designations to celestial bodies made the controversial call, and destroying Pluto as a planet.
On this date in 1930, the dwarf planet Pluto was discovered. Here are some things you may not have known about what was once considered the ninth planet in the solar system. Although it wasn’t discovered until 1930, astronomers had predicted in the late 19th century that something besides the newly discovered Neptune was disturbing the orbit of the seventh planet, Uranus. Between 1909 and 1930, there were 16 prediscovery observations of Pluto in which the observer didn’t realize what was there. Clyde Tombaugh, a 23-year-old astronomer was hired by the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, to lead the effort to find what was called “Planet X.” He did this by comparing photographs of the night sky and looking for any undiscovered moving objects. On Feb. 18, 1930, Tombaugh discovered a moving object in pictures taken on January 23rd and 29th. Other photos confirmed the movement and the discovery was telegraphed to the Harvard Observatory on March 13. The name Pluto was chosen from more than 1,000 suggestions. Pluto, after the mythological god of the underworld, was joined on the final short list of candidates by the names Minerva, after the goddess of wisdom, and Cronus, the son of Uranus and father of Zeus. The name Pluto was suggested by 11-year-old Venitia Burney, who had taken an interest in classical mythology. After its discovery, Pluto was almost immediately seen as a disappointment. It was much smaller than it should have been. If it were the predicted Planet X, it should have been about seven times larger than Earth. In fact, at the time it was estimated to have a diameter of about 60 percent of that of the Earth. It also had an very elliptical orbit and was less reflective than anticipated. It was also determined that Pluto’s orbit takes it inside that of Neptune periodically. A stable orbital ratio means that the two bodies will never collide. Almost immediately, Pluto’s status as a planet was called into question. The dimness and eccentric orbit were seen to be more like those of a comet or asteroid. A year later, other astronomers proposed that the new planet was not the cause of the orbital irregularities of Uranus, and that the discovery of Pluto was an accident. Though the years, estimations of Pluto’s size were revised downward. In 1948, it was believed to be 1/10 the size of the Earth. In 1976, the estimate was down to 1/100th. The 1978 discovery of its moon, Charon, further lowered the estimate to about 1/500th. The most recent estimate puts Pluto at 1/459th the size of Earth. In 1992, new information from Voyager 2’s flyby of Neptune allowed for more precise calculations of Neptune’s effect on the orbit of Uranus, eliminating the need for a Planet X to explain any irregularity. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union created an official definition of the term “planet.” Pluto meets the first two conditions, which are orbiting the Sun and being massive enough to have its own gravity. It doesn’t meet the third condition of clearing its orbital neighborhood of other objects. Instead of being classified as the ninth planet, Pluto is considered the largest and second most massive dwarf planet in the solar system. Our question: Which came first, the discovery of the dwarf planet Pluto, or the naming of Disney character Pluto? Today is the anniversary of the election of Pope Francis, and it’s National Elephant Day in Thailand. It’s unofficially National Workplace Napping Day, National Jewel Day, and National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day. It’s the birthday of actor William H. Macy, who is 67; U2 bassist Adam Clayton, who is 57; and skier Mikaela Shiffrin, who is 22. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1999, the top song in the U.S. was “Believe” by Cher. The No. 1 movie was “Analyze This,” while the novel “The Testament” by John Grisham topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. In 1930, Clyde Tombaugh serendipitously discovered Pluto: the first object in our Solar System out past Neptune. For 48 years, it was the only object known out there, until Charon -- its giant moon -- was discovered. But the 1990s brought with it a slew of Kuiper Belt objects, and in 2006, Pluto was officially demoted to a "dwarf planet." But also in 2006, NASA's New Horizons mission was launched: the first dedicated mission to the outer Solar System. In 2015, it flew by both Pluto and Charon, discovering two vastly different worlds. Here's what we've learned.
This week we have the Idaho coal miners strike, the Dynamite Express, and the events that led to the murder of senator Steunenberg as a result. In the opening segment of her show, Jen describes the amazing weekend she had at the 2015 Edel Gathering, a Catholic women's conference that she hosts. She also plays a clip of Kelly Mantoan, homeschooling mom of 5, rapping during the karaoke party. Jen then gives her take on the probe to Pluto carrying the ashes of the once-plant's discoverer, Clyde Tombaugh. She argues that this symbolic act shows a subconscious understanding of the sacredness of the person.

People are often skeptical about the UFO phenomenon but phenomenon but they shouldn't be. At least a subset of UFO reports of around 5 percent are from credible witnesses and frequently backed by hard data such as radar tapes or gun camera film. For example astronauts Gordon Cooper and Buzz Aldrin as well as Harvard astronomer Clyde Tombaugh have all publicly described their UFO sightings. But the interesting thing is that we may be on the threshold of understanding the technology of UFOs. In a nutshell it was once thought that the idea of extra dimensions was strictly the domain of science fiction. That has all changed in the last several decades as physicists appear to be closing in on a final ''theory of everything'' which suggests we may live in an eleven dimensional universe. These cutting edge theories are now being tested at the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator in Geneva, Switzerland. Among the theories being tested is one called Warped Geometry by a Harvard physicist which may allow for fast interstellar travel in the extra dimensions. Spectrographic data from actual UFO sightings would confirm if these craft are using technology we are now on the cusp of unraveling.
