This episode looks at two aviation accident investigations that were highly complex for very different reasons. One is the well-known TWA Flight 800 investigation where John Goglia and Todd Curtis were both directly involved. The other is a lesser-known 2002 crash of a Cessna 208B aircraft that is the subject of a book by author Leslie Kean.John and Todd review the crash of TWA Flight 800, an investigation where John was involved as an NTSB Board Member and Todd as support for Boeing. They explore the complexity of the investigation and the efforts made to understand the accident. They highlight the massive amount of data in the NTSB Public Docket.A different kind of complexity was involved in the investigation of a Cessna 208B aircraft that lost control and crashed shortly after takeoff from Mobile, Alabama. Leslie Kean covers this investigation in her 2010 book "UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record." She calls the accident a UAP event AND Todd agrees.John was also involved in the investigation as a NTSB board member. The NTSB identified the probable cause as spatial disorientation followed by a loss of control. However, one aspect of the accident remains unresolved. Several pieces of the wreckage have red streaks that could not be matched to aviation paint used on civilian or military aircraft. Several organizations were involved in this investigation. Despite multiple analyses of the red streaks, they could not be explained. In the eight decades since the modern UFO era began, few dates are as monumentally important as Dec. 16, 2017. That is when The New York Times published a blockbuster story about a secretive government investigation into alarming and ongoing encounters between U.S. military units and unidentified machines of unknown origin - machines that appear to be far more advanced than any technology known to exist on Earth. In the first half, Mike Bara, a former aerospace engineer turned conspiracy theorist, shared his insights on the intersection of politics, space technology, and the mysteries of UFOs. He delved into the implications of recent congressional hearings on UFOs and thinks there could be a political agenda behind the push for disclosure: a way to get UFOs and aliens into the public discourse. Bara believes the wrong individuals are being called to testify before Congress, as they lack expertise about some of the top UFO cases like Roswell. He was critical of notable witnesses like Chris Mellon and Lue Elizondo, suggesting that their backgrounds in intelligence cast doubt on their trustworthiness. He posited, "What if Kennedy was going to talk about aliens... and that was the reason why they decided to get rid of him?" This theory links JFK's assassination to a broader conspiracy involving alien technology and governmental secrecy.Discussing remarkable advancements in space technology, particularly SpaceX's achievements, he expressed confidence in Elon Musk's ambitions, stating, "When Musk says, I want to go to Mars in four years, who am I to say he's not going to do it?" The conversation shifted to the topic of drones and potential new technologies. A caller theorized about drones laying down reflective powder to enhance holographic images. The guest acknowledged the possibility, stating, "You need a reflective medium... so yeah, it's absolutely possible." He also touched on the Calvine UFO photo taken in Scotland in 1990, which some researchers have called the "best" UFO picture ever. Bara dismissed the diamond-shaped object in the photo as a mountain peak rather than an unidentified object.----------In the latter half, researcher and writer Micah Hanks shared his longtime fascination with unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) and the mysteries of the universe, fueled by advancements in technology, particularly the James Webb Space Telescope. Hanks believes in the likelihood of extraterrestrial life, citing the diversity of organisms on Earth. "I find it almost impossible to think that there isn't life out there," he commented, with liquid methane oceans on moons encircling planets in our solar system, as well as on some of the discovered exoplanets, light years from Earth. He recounted some of the most compelling UFO cases, like the 1964 Lonnie Zamora incident in New Mexico and the 2004 Nimitz incident involving Navy pilots who encountered a Tic-Tac-shaped object. Hanks said he interviewed one of the pilots who described seeing the anomalous object moving erratically on the ocean surface.He acknowledged that while many UFO sightings can be explained, often as misidentified drones or satellites-- he remains captivated by the 2-5% that defy explanation. Discussing historical UFO phenomena, Hanks noted a decline in reported sightings of physical evidence, like landing traces, compared to decades past. He speculated, "Maybe there was a sort of survey... a scientific exploration of a planet... they simply don't need to do that anymore." The discussion moved on to whistleblowers in the UFO community, with Hanks skeptical of some claims while acknowledging the credibility of others. He highlighted the significance of David Grusch's revelations about how the US had reportedly retrieved craft of non-human origin, which was first published on the website he co-founded, The Debrief, in an article by Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumenthal.

In December 2017, the New York Times published a ground-breaking article titled “Glowing Auras and Black Money: The Pentagon's Mysterious UFO Program.” The report was noteworthy not only for what it brought to light about the earnest government/military study of the UAP phenomenon but also that such a storied and seemingly no-nonsense newspaper like the New York Times finally took the subject seriously as well. We followed up in January 2018 with a two-part episode called “Imminent Disclosure?”  The question mark on the title indicated we weren't sure when FULL disclosure would arrive, but drips and drops of astounding revelations were indeed on the horizon. Five and a half years later, since that watershed coverage made a splash, two of its original journalists, Ralph Blumenthal and Leslie Kean, have done it again. On June 5th, 2003, they published an article about a former intelligence official and whistleblower named David Grusch. That article is called “Intelligence Officials Say US Has Retrieved Craft of Non-human Origin.” The title alone should speak to the world-changing implications. Because this story needed daylight quickly, it was published on an independent news website called TheDebrief.org. As it turns out, our good friend and colleague, Micah Hanks, also co-founded that news organization. Thanks to Micah, we were fortunate to be granted an interview with Ralph Blumenthal to get the story behind the story. Following our discussion, we'll hear from Micah, the Editor in Chief at The Debrief, and Chrissy Newton, their head of Media Relations and a long-time podcaster herself, to consider where we all go from here.
