This led to a presentation and panel discussion over one year later, organized and produced by Lee Speigel, that included Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Dr. Jacques Vallée, and Col. Gordon Cooper. While this was considered a high point at the time in terms of gaining respectability for the UFO Waldheim Meeting. by Charles Lear, author of “The Flying Saucer Investigators.”Gordon Cooper, youngest of the original Mercury astronauts, often spoke publicly about his UFO sightings and beliefs. He appeared in documentaries such as James Fox's 2003 film Out of the Blue, and famously wrote a letter dated November 9, 1978, to Ambassador of Grenada to the United States George Ashley Griffith calling for the scientific collection and analysis of data taken from UFO encounters in order to “determine how best to interface with these visitors in a friendly fashion.” In Out of the Blue, he is heard telling a story about a flying saucer with three retractable legs that was filmed landing in 1957 at Edwards Air Force Base. He didn't claim to have witnessed the landing himself, but did say he saw the footage. There was an incident involving the filming of a UFO at Edwards that year, and there is a Project Blue Book file on the case. James McDonald found the witnesses and interviewed them in the late 1960's and wrote a report. Cooper's name is not mentioned by McDonald and the incident as described by McDonald and in the Blue Book file didn't involve a landing. Brad Sparks and Jan Aldrich, both heavily involved in UFO research for many years, had an email exchange discussing this, and a record of it can be found at nicap.org.Read more →

Imagine a capsule whizzing by some 200 miles overhead. It's just big enough to hold a medium size dog (curled up and sleeping) but there is no life onboard. Instead, there is an automated laboratory designed for manufacturing pharmaceuticals. That is the vision of Varda Space Industries. Do they really envision a future where drugs are manufactured in space at scale? Yes. I talked to Mark Herbert, VP of Biopharma Business Development at Varda, about their plans. My two big questions were 1. What is special about microgravity for this application? and 2. Why does pharmaceutical manufacturing makes sense economically?Lifting payloads into space isn't cheap, although the price/kilogram is coming down. On a per-gram basis, pharmaceuticals are one of the more valuable things you could make, so at some point, that can become profitable. And the reason microgravity matters is that in the vacuum of space there is no convection. That affects how crystals are formed. Experiments on the international space station with Merck's cancer immunotherapy, pembrolizumab (Keytruda), show a more uniform particle size distribution and reduced viscosity. That has implications for how it can be delivered to patients. Pardon the interruption. You are subscribed aren't you?The science is pretty cool. But when I reflect on a project like this, I wonder how a project like this comes together? Sixty-five years of space exploration is part of the foundation, of course. That inspires the next generation in terms of rockets, working in microgravity etc.What stands out is the vision it takes to make it a reality. First, there is the imagination of the end state. What do we want to achieve? What brings that to fruition is the ability to imagine and execute all the steps in between. It's a special skill to be able to put all of that together, convince others that it's worth doing and meet the rigid timelines of a launch schedule. Because they're not delaying the launch just because you forgot to pack a key item for the trip.Epic projects like this one and the de-extinction of the wooly mammoth we talked about last week are not only inspiring, they are both essential and inevitable. At some point, we can't not try. And when that happens, human beings find themselves capable of achieving what was once thought to be impossible.Gordon Cooper knows what that feels like:The interviews with my guests are the highlight of my week. Stafford grew up in Weatherford and was a commander on the Gemini IX and Apollo X flights in addition to the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, which is credited for easing tensions between the US and USSR. He also holds the Guinness Book of World Records entry for the highest re-entry speed of any manned space flight, which was achieved during Apollo X.

Episode 100: On this milestone 100th episode, author and Investigative Journalist Randall Fitzgerald joins me on the show. Randall has been investigating and delving into the UFO topic for nearly 50 years. In 1979, he was asked to research the Roswell UFO case and after doing months of painstaking research and submitting his story, strangely, his work was never published. We also discussed what former Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper said about the Roswell crash in an interview with Merv Griffin, Edgar Mitchell's work and statements regarding the UFO phenomena, to include the alleged Admiral Wilson memo. We also discussed other cases, to include Police Office Lonnie Zamora's 1964 Socorro, NM UFO sighting. Randall also provided a unique twist on the 1997 Phoenix Lights mass sighting, which he investigated for several months, to include the possibility that it may have been a holographic PSYOP exercise carried out by the US military. Randall also cited several other UFO/ET cases during the interview, many of which he covers in his new book, Alien in the Mirror: Extraterrestrial Contact Theories and Evidence. Astronauts Edgar Mitchell and Gordon Cooper are big names when it comes to NASA missions and UFO's, two complete different subjects but because of One you get the other in a sense. Both men are Honored Retired Military which gave them the experience to join NASA, and due to both of these jobs UFO's have become apart of both their stories. On June 8th, Washington Post congressional correspondent Jacqueline Alemany interviewed Luis Elizondo, the individual who administered the Pentagon's now-defunct UFO project known as the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program. Irish Lights are Benjamin Fox and Gordon Cooper who have been making music together for over two decades. Both originally from the American Midwest they now compose from across the Atlantic Ocean. People are often skeptical about the UFO phenomenon but phenomenon but they shouldn't be. At least a subset of UFO reports of around 5 percent are from credible witnesses and frequently backed by hard data such as radar tapes or gun camera film. For example astronauts Gordon Cooper and Buzz Aldrin as well as Harvard astronomer Clyde Tombaugh have all publicly described their UFO sightings. But the interesting thing is that we may be on the threshold of understanding the technology of UFOs. In a nutshell it was once thought that the idea of extra dimensions was strictly the domain of science fiction. That has all changed in the last several decades as physicists appear to be closing in on a final ''theory of everything'' which suggests we may live in an eleven dimensional universe. These cutting edge theories are now being tested at the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator in Geneva, Switzerland. Among the theories being tested is one called Warped Geometry by a Harvard physicist which may allow for fast interstellar travel in the extra dimensions. Spectrographic data from actual UFO sightings would confirm if these craft are using technology we are now on the cusp of unraveling.
