What makes you feel good in your body? This week Sam & Jess talk about moving your body and how movement helps us to feel more alive. What can we learn from children when it comes to feeling good in our body? Children don't exercise for the sake of exercising, they play! How did you love to move your body as a kid? Was it jump rope, hop scotch, bike riding, roller blading? How can you incorporate more of that today, as an adult? CATCH UP WITH K + L Today K & L are sharing thoughts, reflecting on events, and reviewing tips for optimal sleep! The girls begin with a conversation around the “campsite policy”, one Lindsey found in Some Thoughts About Relationships. The policy is one Dan Savage coined. Who wants Dan back on the show to discuss!? His belief is that in relationships, you should not leave someone worse off than when you first met them. FOOD FOR THOUGHT! The ladies then discuss their event with HUM Nutrition and share sleep tips from The Sleep Doctor, Michael Breus. And lastly, K & L fondly reflect on their last show in NYC with Stewart Pearce at The Assemblage. THE INTERVIEW Today we had the pleasure of interviewing the host of the popular podcast, Don’t Keep Your Day Job and coach for creative entrepreneurs, Cathy Heller! Her upcoming book, Don’t Keep Your Day Job, is all about living life on your terms and pursuing the things that may be scary, but are calling out to you. Our conversation explores emotions, motivation, creativity, entrepreneurship and turning inward. Cathy speaks on how the resistance of feeling is actually what causes the greatest amount of pain. She explains how state of mind trumps everything—from sleep to food—when it comes to motivation and productivity, and shares her knowledge on how to find momentum and enthusiasm. When it comes to pursuing your passion, Cathy gives tips for where to start, like determining your target audience. We talk about the importance of spending time alone and allowing yourself to be creative. Lastly, we ask Cathy what she’s proud of and what she’s working on, and she opens up about her experience with anxiety and relationship OCD. We also talk about: How humans fear and hide from their feelings The isolating feeling of being an entrepreneur Cultivating a community & making people feel seen Responding to the feedback of your community Not being afraid to share your story The four things people crave that equal a sense of purpose What do we ultimately seek in life? TEM189: Dale Trumbore Quotes This episode of TEM features my favorite quotes from my conversation with composer Dale Trumbore in TEM144. Quotes: “My idea of success as I defined it as I was 18 was ‘I will know I am successful when I am making my living as a composer' and that's shifted over the years as I mentioned before. I have eight piano students. I'm happy to have them. I'm happy to have a source of steady income.” “I love having the morning to do business things and the afternoon to do creative things. Again, that's what works for me. I know everyone's different. But once you find your own personal creative rhythm you should do everything in your power to make that possible and to create and carve out that space for yourself.” “That particular essay is also about not getting so attached to particular performers. Like, ‘oh if this one chorus just did my music I would feel like I made it. I'd feel like I was finally successful. I'd get a ton more commissions as a result. That might be true, but looking at my career, and looking at my friends' careers too, it is very rare that one single performance has that kind of effect.” “Feeling like you have any obligation to put anything on your website is a recipe for disaster I think. It's up to you completely how you structure your website and what you put on it and why.” "You do all this research and it might take five minutes. You don't have to dig deep into the history of what this ensemble has done. But you get a really good feeling for the kind of music that they do and then you look at your own catalog and you see what music you have that would be a good fit for them. An actual, real good fit. And then you say something like 'I think this piece would be a really good fit for you because I've noticed that you loved doing this piece' or 'you did a really beautiful performance of this piece and so I thought you might enjoy my piece." "I've found too that just labeling things when they come up is so helpful. Recognizing that something is a pattern and that it comes up every time and knowing that you can be like 'Oh, this is the day where I hate everything I've written and tomorrow or two days later it's gonna be fine again.' That helps you move through it, again, without attaching any additional stress or anxiety to that moment." "It's okay if things take time and they will take time. And if you set a very, very narrow, specific goal for yourself you're not very likely to succeed." Songwriter, CEO and host of the "Don’t Keep Your Day Job" Podcast, Cathy Heller, is a “Yes and...” person. She's added layers to her career and her livelihood over time; adding things that she loves to do. Rather than just switching gears and completely changing paths, she's actually just added certain things and been able to have a portfolio of different tracks as her career. One of the things this allows us to understand is that you don't have to necessarily choose just one career focus anymore. You can have a variety of different layers to diversify your skills, passion and interest. When you hear from Cathy in this episode, you will notice that she has such a zest for life and has a lot of valuable advice when it comes to identifying what you are assigned to do in this lifetime, what you're here for and how to find that thing, or that set of things.
The Importance of Social Media Followers I recently read that over 50 million businesses use Facebook Pages to connect with their customers.(1) 50 million?! These business are tapping into something powerful. They understand the value of connecting with their customers directly and using social media followers to build and expand their brand. In essence, they understand the importance of a building a tribe—a group of people who love you, are loyal to your brand, and who trust you. Your tribe is made up of the people who buy your product when you launch a pre-sale. They are the first people to mention your name (or better yet, give someone your business card) to refer your service. Your tribe is bought into your business because they’re bought into you and what you stand for. One of the best ways to build a tribe is to provide a place for them to connect and engage with you and your brand. Social media provides you with the space to build a relationship with your customers, make a personal impact, and ultimately make money. This isn’t strictly a numbers game. My friend Rachel Hollis once said, “5,000 dedicated social media followers are way better than having millions and millions.” It doesn’t matter how many social media followers you have—if they don’t trust you, they aren’t going to buy from you. Successful Brands Build Trust People buy from those they know, like and trust. So, it’s pretty important to build trust with your tribe of social media followers. Related : How to Sell Without Feeling Slimy But how do we get people to trust our brand or business? One of my favorite examples of a brand that has built trust is our company, Ramsey Solutions. Dave Ramsey grew this business and brand over decades through personal connection. About six years ago, he realized he needed to start thinking about the future and the succession of his company. From the very beginning, it had been just him. But he realized that if he wanted to take it to the next level and scale beyond himself, he needed to make a few changes. He knew that the best brands build trust. And the best way to build trust is through people. Brands don’t change people, people change people. He realized we needed more people who could take more messages into more markets. That’s how the Ramsey Personalities were born! For more than 25 years, Dave Ramsey has been building trust with his tribe—one person at a time. The same can be true for you and me. If you want to make an impact, and if you want to make money, you need to build trust. Building a Social Media Following That Trusts You I personally feel so connected to all of my social media followers. We may have never met, but I pride myself on the fact that I know you trust me. I have read so many comments on my social media posts and met so many people in grocery stores, airports, and book signings who say, “I feel like we’re best friends.” Y’all, that’s important to me. I want you to feel like you know me. That you relate with me. That I get you. (Because I do!) Business Boutique has grown as I’ve expanded the number of people in our tribe who genuinely know, like and trust me. In this episode, I want to help you connect and engage with your social media followers in a way that builds trust. We’re going to discuss: How to inspire people with your success and connect through your struggles. When to tell people what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. Why being consistent is one of the most crucial things you can do in your business. How to stop being a doormat and still be generous with what you have to offer. The ultimate way to lean into your gifts and be YOU! Building trust with your social media followers is no different than building trust with any other person in your life. That’s why I’m going to give you five tips to help you build trust that will impact your social media followers and, ultimately, your bottom line! Why Consistently Showing Up for Your Social Media Followers Builds the Best Relationships With Jennifer Allwood Jennifer Allwood is a powerhouse business coach for creative business owners and host of The Jennifer Allwood Show Podcast. She has an infectious enthusiasm for helping like-minded creative women build their social media followers and turn their talents and hobbies into lucrative online businesses. I met Jennifer Allwood at a Business Boutique event and am thrilled that she will be a breakout speaker at our fall 3-Day Business Boutique Event! In this episode, Jennifer Allwood and I talk about: How you don’t have to be the best at business, you just have to be the best at marketing your business. Why being consistent on social media and building trust is key for small business owners. The best ways to serve your social media followers, build connection, provide value, and show up for them. Why mixing your home and work life isn’t a bad thing for social media. Related: Business Values: What Your Business Should Be About How Radical Empathy and Vulnerability Can Build Trust With Your Tribe With Cathy Heller Cathy Heller is a songwriter and host of the Don’t Keep Your Day Job Podcast where she offers tools and insights to help people find a sense of purpose and make a living doing what they love. She made her mark in the music world by licensing her songs to film, TV and ads. Cathy also started her own licensing company where she pitches other artists. By mixing her successful licensing career experience with her passion for helping people turn their passions into profits, Cathy created a music licensing course for artists. In this episode, Cathy Heller and I talk about: How Cathy built trust with her tribe—and built it really fast. Why being vulnerable and transparent is key to building connection and trust. The difference between a hobby and a business (and it’s not about money). How radical empathy is the key to Cathy’s approach to building connection and showing her tribe she truly “sees” them. A few months ago, I had the honor of being a guest on Cathy Heller’s podcast, Don’t Keep Your Day Job, and I am thrilled that I get to have her on mine. Not only could I talk to her for hours and hours, but she has an incredible story that I know so many of you will resonate with. From early on, Cathy knew she was meant for more and sought to find her purpose in the world (she admits there were multiple attempts). She changed her major to World Religions to truly find out if there was “more,” and ended up taking a life-changing three-year trip to Jerusalem. After returning, Cathy moved to L.A. to see if she could make a career out of her love for singing and music. It took a lot of work, but she eventually landed a record deal. Unfortunately, her record label dropped her before it even had a chance to release. Feeling defeated at first, she bailed on the music and landed herself other “practical” jobs ranging from real estate and casting to floral and interior design. None of these fulfilled her though and she set out determined to find other ways to make money singing and songwriting – and help others at the same time. Fast-forward to today and you’ve likely heard Cathy’s songs on your favorite TV shows, ads and more. She cracked the code to making money while fulfilling her purpose and now helps others do the same. In the past year, Cathy has taken it to another level as well by creating her podcast, which takes her knowledge and easily parallels it to anyone else’s passion project. Cathy keeps it real and is the first to say that no one wants to see perfect – they want authenticity. Once you listen, I know you’ll agree. Tune in to hear all the goodness Cathy shares with us. I know that you’ll wrap up your listening session feeling just a little lighter and like you’re one small step closer to stepping into your purpose. -- Question Highlights: Can you tell us a bit about your background and your journey that led you to where you are now?
