THE DAGG SESSIONSKen Tizzard and Music For Goats In St.John's in 1982 I cut my teeth playing bass with local skate/punk bands who wholeheartedly embraced the DIY model of the punk rock culture. SNFU were the first band I had ever seen who had taken this model to a national level and upon seeing the energy and intensity of the performance I knew - this was what I wanted to do with my life. At 18 I relocated to Toronto and landed a job at Music Express Magazine which let to the position of photo editor where I got to work with legendary photographers Floria Sigusmondi, Herb Ritts and Annie Leibovitz shooting bands like David Bowie, REM and U2 as well as hundreds of touring band around the world. This introduction to the music business, record companies, PR agencies and band management helped me to understand the relationship of band and audience from the viewpoint of the ‘machine.' As well, sharing office space with Management Trust (Jake Gold) led me to an audition with The Watchmen. In turn this changed my life direction for over a decade as I toured the world and grew as a songwriter and artist. In 1999 I began working a lot with Big Wreck singer Ian Thornley who at the time was married to my sister Christine. Big Wreck and The Watchmen were in between albums and both bands were feeling the weight of years of touring and the change in the record companies as we moved into the digital age. Ian and I decided to form a new band which led to the creation of Thornley with whom I toured relentlessly for many years. Towards the end of Thornley, Ian had decided to recreate the magic that was Big Wreck and again I toured with the band under that name as I began parting ways with the lifestyle and direction of the band. Upon leaving Thornley, there was a period of return to DIY with independent records which captured my solid endeavours - from six string bass singer songwriter (Quest Storey house) through several incarnations of bands including Bad Intent, The Variety Show Players and in 2017 the unlikely local crew which has grown to become Music For Goats. As well, the development of The Whiskey Wednesday Show created a need for a production studio which we also created in our home. The Show has grown into a seven camera, 24 channel audio, weekly livestream hosting guests from Rick Mercer, William Prince and Joey ‘Shithead” Keithley (D.O.A.) to Matt Mays and Bob Izumi. Songs and stories every week with your host Ken Tizzard and Music For Goats. It is now January 2024 and I am once again looking to release another album of original music with the current line-up of Music For Goats; Neil Lucy (guitar) Ken Grant (bass) and Dave Lawrence (drums) and Steve Dagg (RIP - drums). This album titled “THE DAGG SESSIONS” celebrates the songs created before drummer Steve Dagg was diagnosed with Cancer. After a year long battle of treatments Steve passed away in the winter of 2023. We had recorded the drums for the entire record in September before Steve's illness was terminal. The Dagg Sessions is available on all platforms on April 30, 2024 The Dagg Sessions will be available on vinyl thanks to contributors who purchased sections of the back album cover in order to help out with up front costs. Yes, we are sell outs… As for style of this record, I have to say it fits in with the Americana genre pretty well as if combines folk, country, rock and pop into a collection of songs that once again document a time and place in my own personal history. Ken Tizzard www.kentizzard.com ktizzard@kentizzard.com

In this podcast, Kara had the opportunity to interview a man who reframed her story as a youth, her youth minister Ken Grant. While Kara was a teenager in the 90s when youth groups were all the rage and the purity movement was in full swing, she considers herself lucky. Though she was influenced by the purity culture, she never got the message from her youth minister that she needed to be demure. Instead, he encouraged her to lead and use her voice. This was the first time Kara has spoken to Ken since she was 18 and was able to express to him what he meant to her. Listen as they discuss topics including leadership, what Christianity is today, social media, race and white privilege. Ken spent time teaching religion in high schools and universities, and has worked full time as a dad and in youth ministry. Ken was born and raised in small-town southeast Wisconsin, the sixth of seven children. After graduating from Ripon College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg where Ken met and married his wife Denise. Through moves to North Dakota, Michigan, Indiana, Texas and back to Michigan, Ken and Denise raised their family and served in the church. Ken has his PhD from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in History, served as a supply pastor, and in 2020 became an ordained pastor for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and works as the head pastor at Genesis Lutheran Church in Detroit, MI.

Allie used to lecture and the  decided to walk away when she had a photograph hanging in a gallery alongside work by Martin Parr. Allie started photography when she was 16 or 17 shooting black and white with film. But Allie had a difficult childhood and so felt she had to get a “sensible” degree so she did a degree in English literature. She then taught, until she felt she had been “bled dry”. When her daughter was in her teens Allie Crewe went to night school to study photography. Allie had already studied film and Italian at night school and loved learning.   Allie's journey from night class to gallery was an interesting one. Her first tutor thought an image (you can see it here), the one hanging on Allie's wall behind us as we record the podcast, had something about it. So her tutor sent it to a curator. wasn't sure about it being sent, but her tutor sent it while Allie was taking a break in the loo. Her work was accepted and ended up in a gallery amongst lots of photographs by high calibre male photographers. She came home three mornings afterwards and decided that she would leave the security of teaching and move to being a photographer. It changed her life. From that initial success Allie has quickly enjoyed a lot of success. She had an exhibition about domestic violence that was opened by Queen Camilla. And that bought a lot of press and publicity.   Allie is unsure as to whether she could have managed this work when she was younger. All the work has been about her in some way. She has started her work thinking about herself and then connected to a group and the work then becomes about the group. One example of this was her work with trans women. Allie's work has appeared in many national papers including the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Sun. She enjoys the social conscience work and making work that is relevant to people who want change. And she enjoys being authentic and becoming part of the group she is working with. Allie has won several awards including the BJP (British Journal of Photography) award. She got this with an image of Grace, a doctor. Allie feels that the award was a way of validating herself. Allie explained that this is a male dominated industry with a 40% pay gap. She felt this award made her feel validated and helped with imposter syndrome. But as well as the positives awards add pressure including pressure to get more. Allie also has an award from the RPS (Royal Photography Society). Allie is currently studying for her masters at Ulster and in her first year her tutor was Ken Grant. He is now with Donovan Wylie. She was with ken at Martin Parr's studio for a few days. It was there she got asked to enter the RPS award. Sam and Allie discussed the idea that there are awards at every level that photographers can go for and these wards are great for your marketing. But equally this is not compulsory as a photographer. We can as photographers do work just for ourselves. Allies Instagram references Chris Killip who is a photographer she is drawn to. She found his recent exhibition very emotional. Allie has been careful in her masters to only reference female photographers, but personally she likes all sorts of photographers. Alessandra Sanguinetti has an amazing book called "Some say Ice". Alys Tomlinson is also an influence who Allie was looking at on the morning of our conversation. Allie still shots film, 35mm and medium format. She loves her Mamiya camera. Marcus asks Allie how people can get into shooting portraits for exhibitions magazines and books. Allie explains that for her she chose something than was personal and took it from there. She worked as an artist in residency with the help of her connections (ones she had worked hard to build). From that starting point she felt the artistic residency gave her the legitimacy she needed when showing her work or entering it for competitions.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Ken Grant was born in Liverpool in 1967 and at 12 years old bought his first camera - a polaroid - from money he had saved working in the school holidays for his joiner father. He went on to study photography at technical college, where he discovered and devoured numerous classic photobooks in the library, and then at West Surrey College of Art and Design, in Farnham, where he was mentored or lectured by such luminaries of British photography as Martin Parr, Chris Killip, and Paul Graham. Ken is best known for having dedicated much of his career to documenting daily working class life in and around Liverpool. Since the 1980s, he has photographed his contemporaries in the city and engaged in sustained projects both in the UK and more widely, in Europe. Ken tends to work slowly, returning again and again to the same places and becoming a familiar sight to the people who gather there. The books that have resulted have often not been published until many years later. His first monograph of the Liverpool pictures, The Close Season, was published by Dewi Lewis in 2002. In Spring 2014, Ken published a second monograph, drawing from the same body of work entitled No Pain Whatsoever (whose title derives from a story by Richard Yates), published by Swedish book designer Gosta Flemming under his imprint, Journal. His most recent book, focussing on images shot on and around a munical land fill site is entitled Benny Profane and was published last year by RRB Books.Ken’s photographs are held in important collections of photography, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Folkwang Museum in Essen and other international public and private collections.Ken was the course leader of the famous BA in Documentary Photography course at the University of Wales, Newport between 1998 and 2013 and since then has been a lecturer in the MFA Photography course at the University of Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland. On episode 128, Ken discusses, among other things:Teaching in Belfast and living on the WirralGetting the feedback of his peersBeing back home and making work thereBuying himself his first camera - a polariod - at 12Discovering the library at technical collegeTaking a long time between shooting and making a bookTaking on board Josef Sudek’s advice to ‘Rush slowly’His most recent book, published by RRB Books, Benny ProfaneReferenced:Paul SeawrightDonovan WylieJohn BergerDaniel MeadowsDavid HurnTobias ZielonyAnastasia Taylor-LindJulian GermainTommy HarrisBill BrandtDiane ArbusLarry FinkDavid MooreRaymond MooreTom WoodLee FriedlanderFrancis Benjamin JohnsonMitch EpsteinWorker Photography MovementChris KillipIan BrownMartin ParrPaul Graham Sniffin’ GlueMichael SchmidtFlannery O’ConnorDewi LewisGösta FlemmingChrister StromholmChauncey HareJohn PilgerNick BroomfieldJames KelmanRichard YatesRaymond CarverMarketa LuskačováJosef SudekRudi ThoemmesAnia Nalecka-MilachMark PowerRafal MilachWebsite | Instagram | Twitter | Facebook“I think it’s very simple; it either works or it doesn’t. Rock bassist turned singer-songwriter Ken Tizzard has just released “A Good Dog Is Lost: A Collection Of Ron Hynes Songs”, a loving tribute to the Newfoundland songsmith who sadly passed away in 2015. Born and raised in St Johns, and now based in Campbellford ON, Ken Tizzard had a long career playing bass with Canadian rock bands The Watchmen and Thornley before setting out on a folk music career. Ken Tizzard considered Ron Hynes a friend and a mentor in the development of his own career as a singer-songwriter. The roots of this new project date back to November 2013, when Ron asked Ken to accompany him on bass for a 12-date duo tour of Newfoundland and Labrador. After the loss of his friend, as part of the grieving process, Ken Tizzard created an acclaimed one-man show, Hynesight, that was performed at the Westben Arts Festival Theatre in Campbellford. The new album is a natural progression from those performances, and features eleven Ron Hynes songs with support from Ken Tizzard’s regular bassist Ken Grant, drummer Steve Dagg, multi-instrumentalist Luke Mercier (fiddle, banjo, mandolin), and guitarist Ken Kelly; with cameos from Ron Hynes sideman Paul Kinsman (accordion) with backing vocals from Amelia Curran and Ken’s daughters Caitlyn and Cassidy Tizzard. We caught up with Ken Tizzard at home in Campbellford to chat about the new project. For more information, visit kentizzard.com. This episode of The DrakeCast takes a deeper dive into the topic we covered in the last episode; #28 Big & Horny in Montana. Right after that story hit the interwebs, we received a call from someone who felt that their side of the argument hadn't been given proper intelligence. This person was Ken Grant who belongs to the Friends of Bighorn Lake, which is a group that is fighting for more regular water levels in the reservoir. Grant had quite a few problems not only with our story but with the Bighorn River Alliance video, "A River at Risk" that we continually referenced. Throughout the episode we hear Grant's grievances, but we also hear a rebuttal from Anne Marie Emery, the executive director of the Bighorn River Alliance. Many thanks to Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures and Scott Fly Rods for their continued support.
