'At the Watts Memorial EC1' is a haunting recreation of some of the true stories told on the famous memorial in Postman's Park. The memorial commemorates brave people who lost their lives trying to save others in acts of heroic self-sacrifice in the last three centuries - most recently in 2007. We hear the heart-breaking stories of William Donald of Bayswater, a railway clerk, Sarah Smith, a pantomime artiste, and Solomon Gamalan, an eleven-year-old boy, among others. One of these stories can also be heard in the September Writers Salon, where the author read it live in the Colony Room Green. Written and read by Simon Roberts Simon Roberts, based in West London, writes short stories and flash fiction. His story Dirty Chicken & Rice was a 2024 Plaza Prizes finalist, and his adaptation of The Slaves of Solitude was produced by Questors Theatre in 2024. He was longlisted for the 2022 Fish Short Story Prize. Peter speaks to the Brighton-based British photographer Simon Roberts about his experience photographing England's social landscape in the decade preceding Brexit. Whilst Simon's unique large format perspectives draw their significance from a long and rich tradition of British landscape representation, they demonstrate a challenge to traditional stereotypes and idealised cliches of Britain's visual geography. 3 Top Business Stories 1. Bank chief executives have been summoned by the UK's financial watchdog to address concerns that savings rates are not rising as fast as mortgages. Bosses at Lloyds, HSBC, NatWest and Barclays are to meet the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on Thursday. Higher interest rates have seen banks raise mortgage costs but there are concerns that higher returns are not being passed on as quickly to savers. (Click here to read more) 2. Energy suppliers have been warned they should retain profits rather than pay out returns to shareholders, to ensure firms can weather future price shocks. Regulator Ofgem said firms "must learn the lessons of the energy crisis", adding "a return to the practices we saw before isn't on the table". (Click here to read more) 3. Supermarkets and other fuel retailers will be forced to publish live prices under a new scheme aimed at stopping them overcharging, the government says. It comes after Britons were found to have paid an extra 6p per litre for fuel at supermarkets last year as weak competition let them charge more. Under the scheme drivers will be able to compare up-to-date prices online so they can find the cheapest option. Driving groups say the idea, which is used elsewhere in Europe, is overdue. Morrisons' and Asda's targeted fuel margins for 2023 had doubled and tripled respectively since 2019. Sainsbury's and Tesco had followed suit and raised their prices, suggesting competition had "weakened". In this special episode the first of an irregular series of talks with non-photographers involved with photography, Grant Scott speaks with founder/curator/artist/publisher Craig Atkinson about his publishing project Cafe Royal Books. They discuss the pressures of the long form project, publishing decisions, marketing and the impact Cafe Royal Books has had on British documentary photography. Craig Atkinson/Cafe Royal Books Based in Southport, England, Craig Atkinson is a senior lecturer and researcher at the University of Central Lancashire. He founded Café Royal Books in 2005 and new booklets are published frequently, typically one per week and in short runs of 250 copies which are sold both directly and through bookshops in the UK, Europe, USA, Australia, Japan, Canada and Switzerland. The booklets have a consistent print quality, paper and layout, laid out to a grid system, of usually 36 pages in length, slightly under A5 size and predominantly black & white and affordable. The booklets predominantly document social, historical and cultural change, including themes of youth, leisure, music, protest, race, religion, industry, identity, architecture and fashion, using both previously unpublished work and photographs from archives. It has published work by over 100 photographers, including John Benton-Harris, John Bulmer, John Claridge, John Deakin, Ken Grant, David Hurn, Chris Killip, Daniel Meadows, Tish Murtha, Jim Mortram, Martin Parr, Simon Roberts, Homer Sykes, Ed Templeton, Arthur Tress Janine Wiedel and Grant. What cars do their drivers like the most? We'll have the answers for you in our in-depth look at the J.D. Power 2022 APEAL Study. The J.D. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study measures owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle. This year the recently launched Kia EV6 compact SUV and Mercedes-Benz EQS large premium car were two battery-electric vehicles that topped their respective segments. But the vast majority of segment leaders in emotional appeal are conventional gasoline-powered cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs. The Jeep Wagoneer UV, Jeep Grand Wagoneer premium SUV, Kia Carnival minivan, and Hyundai Santa Cruz midsize pickup were newcomers to the market that top their segments. Consumer excitement with their vehicles actually fell this year, breaking a streak of increases that dates back to 2014. It is only the fifth time in the 27-year history of the study that consumer excitement with their vehicles declined year over year. And we'll have more, including information on how Tesla owners feel about their cars. In this week's road test segment, host Jack Nerad will give his take on the new, cutting-edge 2023 Genesis GV60. It's the first dedicated electric vehicle from the Genesis brand. The GV60's new-as-tomorrow features include facial and fingerprint recognition. Plus the vehicle actually has a crystal ball. Also in the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague went truckin' crazy in the substantially new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X. The full-size pickup truck is designed to slug it out off-road, and Teague and Nerad will offer their opinions of it in this episode. In episode 167 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on nostalgia, the photographic happening and a celebrity photo shoot in New York. Plus this week photographer Simon Roberts takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' exhibited widely and his photographs reside in major public and private collections, including the George Eastman House, Deutsche Börse Art Collection and V&A Museum. In 2010 he was commissioned as the official British Election Artist by the House of Commons Works of Art Committee to produce a record of the General Election and in 2014 he represented Britain during the UK-Russia Year of Culture. He has been commissioned to make several large-scale public artworks and recognised with numerous awards including an Honorary Fellowship to the Royal Photographic Society, the Vic Odden Award and grants from Arts Council England and the John Kobal Foundation. He is the author of several critically acclaimed monographs including Motherland in 2007, We English in 2009), Pierdom in 2013 and Merrie Albion in 2017. Roberts work has been profiled and published widely including in the New Yorker, Granta, National Geographic, ArtForum, Wallpaper, amongst others. He holds a BA Hons in Cultural Geography from The University of Sheffield, and is a regular public speaker and visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Outside of his own professional practice he is involved with several not for profit organisations having served as a trustee of Photoworks and currently working as an ambassador for FotoDocument and the Positive View Foundation. This week Tim Fleming's guest is Simon Roberts, Business Anthropologist.  Simon is one the world's leading anthropologists in business.  He advises some of the largest global organisations, including Intel, Facebook, Spotify, Google and many other Fortune 500 companies, through his London-based consultancy, Stripe Partners. His book The Power of Not Thinking is out now in e-book and Audio format and will be published on July 9th. Simon Roberts just completed the epic Spine race after suffering injury before the first checkpoint. After meeting him first at The Dragons Back Race in 2019 I thought it would be great to hear his story. In a space of less than a mile, seven bridges link Newcastle with Gateshead including the distinctive shape of the Tyne Bridge. But what kind of human endeavour goes into imagining and realising such man-made wonders? Newcastle University's Sean Wilkinson, Erica Wagner author of Chief Engineer, and architect Simon Roberts look at the bond between the visionaries and the grafters with Rana Mitter and an audience at Sage Gateshead. Erica Wagner is the author of Chief Engineer: The Man Who Built the Brooklyn Bridge, a biography of civil engineer Washington Roebling. Erica is former literary editor of The Times, the author of several books and is a lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Goldsmith's University of London. Sean Wilkinson is a Reader in Structural Engineering at Newcastle University whose research includes work on resilient communities, the design of high rise buildings and earthquakes. Architect Simon Roberts works for Wilkinson Eyre who designed the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and has worked solely on bridge projects for the past decadeProducer: Debbie Kilbride
