Synopsis - Dany Schifter Punk Rock (Episode 43) In this episode of Dany Schifter Punk Rock, we dive into the raw energy and rebellious spirit of punk. We kick off with Patti Smith Group's "Revenge", a poetic yet powerful track that blends introspection with punk defiance. Then, we amp up the energy with SNFU's "The King Of Skin", a fast-paced, sarcastic anthem from the Canadian hardcore scene. Discount's "History Is History" follows, delivering a melodic yet thought-provoking take on the weight of the past. We also explore the legendary Stooges, the band that ignited the punk movement with Iggy Pop's primal energy and genre-defining sound. To close, we review "Plea For Peace, Punk Rock Music CD" (Asian Man Records), a powerful compilation featuring Alkaline Trio and The Bouncing Souls, proving that punk remains a tool for resistance and change. Punk is not dead. It's alive, loud, and still shaking the system! #DanySchifterPunkRock #PunkRock #PattiSmith #SNFU #Discount #TheStooges #HardcorePunk #PleaForPeace #AsianManRecords #PunkSpirit #DIY #StayRebellious #PunkNeverDies
THE DAGG SESSIONSKen Tizzard and Music For Goats In St.John's in 1982 I cut my teeth playing bass with local skate/punk bands who wholeheartedly embraced the DIY model of the punk rock culture. SNFU were the first band I had ever seen who had taken this model to a national level and upon seeing the energy and intensity of the performance I knew - this was what I wanted to do with my life. At 18 I relocated to Toronto and landed a job at Music Express Magazine which let to the position of photo editor where I got to work with legendary photographers Floria Sigusmondi, Herb Ritts and Annie Leibovitz shooting bands like David Bowie, REM and U2 as well as hundreds of touring band around the world. This introduction to the music business, record companies, PR agencies and band management helped me to understand the relationship of band and audience from the viewpoint of the ‘machine.' As well, sharing office space with Management Trust (Jake Gold) led me to an audition with The Watchmen. In turn this changed my life direction for over a decade as I toured the world and grew as a songwriter and artist. In 1999 I began working a lot with Big Wreck singer Ian Thornley who at the time was married to my sister Christine. Big Wreck and The Watchmen were in between albums and both bands were feeling the weight of years of touring and the change in the record companies as we moved into the digital age. Ian and I decided to form a new band which led to the creation of Thornley with whom I toured relentlessly for many years. Towards the end of Thornley, Ian had decided to recreate the magic that was Big Wreck and again I toured with the band under that name as I began parting ways with the lifestyle and direction of the band. Upon leaving Thornley, there was a period of return to DIY with independent records which captured my solid endeavours - from six string bass singer songwriter (Quest Storey house) through several incarnations of bands including Bad Intent, The Variety Show Players and in 2017 the unlikely local crew which has grown to become Music For Goats. As well, the development of The Whiskey Wednesday Show created a need for a production studio which we also created in our home. The Show has grown into a seven camera, 24 channel audio, weekly livestream hosting guests from Rick Mercer, William Prince and Joey ‘Shithead” Keithley (D.O.A.) to Matt Mays and Bob Izumi. Songs and stories every week with your host Ken Tizzard and Music For Goats. It is now January 2024 and I am once again looking to release another album of original music with the current line-up of Music For Goats; Neil Lucy (guitar) Ken Grant (bass) and Dave Lawrence (drums) and Steve Dagg (RIP - drums). This album titled “THE DAGG SESSIONS” celebrates the songs created before drummer Steve Dagg was diagnosed with Cancer. After a year long battle of treatments Steve passed away in the winter of 2023. We had recorded the drums for the entire record in September before Steve's illness was terminal. The Dagg Sessions is available on all platforms on April 30, 2024 The Dagg Sessions will be available on vinyl thanks to contributors who purchased sections of the back album cover in order to help out with up front costs. Yes, we are sell outs… As for style of this record, I have to say it fits in with the Americana genre pretty well as if combines folk, country, rock and pop into a collection of songs that once again document a time and place in my own personal history. This week we are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. Captain Content reminds us that a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. We hope that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Neurotic Outsiders – “Nasty Ho” from Neurotic Outsiders (1996)Thrasher – “Bad Boys” from Thrasher (1985)Heavy Bones – “4:AM T-M” from Heavy Bones (1991)Ultra Bomb – “Time To Burn” from Time To Burn (2022)Saints Of The Underground - “Tomorrow Never Comes” from Love The Sin, Hate The Sinner (2008)Mad Season – “Lifeless Dead” from Above (1995)Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” from Division One (1985)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

"Two doctors walk into a bar...a pair of docs". Ok, we're mixing up bad jokes here but you get the idea. To the Metal World though, Paradox is an awesome veteran band spawned from the legendary 80s German thrash scene. Paradox have a new platter on the shelves in the form of "Heresy 2 - End Of The Legend". A worthy sequel to their most famous record. So we sat down with the man behind the legend Charly Steinhauser. We get into the new record, their former label Roadrunner (now and then) and we find out exactly what a "paradox" is. In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we talk the Elvira 40th Anniversary special and sign a petition to get punk legend Chi-Pig (SNFU) a spot on the Canadian Walk of Fame. Musically, we crank new and used from Paradox, Iron Angel, Lock Up, Doom, Government Issue, Christian Muenzer, Dolore, Morbific, the aforementioned SNFU and introduce Chicago's Creepshow in our "Indie Spotlight". This month's Gut Feeling Podcast is an interview with The Noise Floor Recording Studio's Terry Ondang. Currently based in Gabriola Island, B.C., the Noise Floor's idyllic beachside setting has brought artists like Orville Peck, Dead Soft, Wolf Parade, Partner through its doors. On top of studio life, Terry gets into: Nirvana as her gateway to punk and hardcore; starting her concert promotion career booking SNFU shows at The Java Joint; winging a show offer e-mail to Fugazi, and cinching it; and prepping new music of her own some 25+ years after first grappling with a Strat copy. It's a deep dive, hope you enjoy!

Ford Pier is a singer/ songwriter based out of Vancouver BC. Ford and I go way back to the early 90''s when we both sang back up on an SNFU song called "Bobbit". Ford was the screeching sound you hear near the end! Ford has played in and formed too many bands to mention. He certainly is one of the good ones! Photo by Andrew DennisonThe fourth episode of the Gut Feeling podcast is an interview with Sean Lande, lead guitarist and founding member of Strain, a dominant force in Vancouver’s hardcore scene during the mid to late ‘90s.Among other things, Sean gets into: how he fell into straight edge hardcore; embarrassing first band names; and recording Strain’s massively chunky Here and Now LP at Mushroom Studios, a recording facility where Heart and Loverboy tracked some of their biggest records. The talk also connects Strain to SNFU, Gob, Undertow, Metallica, Pushead, and a bunch of Vancouver hardcore bands. 2021 marks the 25th anniversary of Here and Now, and you can check the record out through Apple Music and Spotify. WE CHAT DAD STUFF WITH DAVE OF SNFU AND WHEAT CHIEFS FAME.
Dave Rees played drums in the Epitaph era of SNFU. Arguably one of the best versions of SNFU in all of the versions. Most certainly my favourite as I was their sound guy and drum tech for many tours throughout the mid tp late 90's. SNFU taught me how to tour and tour with the proper balance of fun and work. After SNFU, Dave found a passion for video editing and has worked in film and TV for almost 20 years. His Documentary 'dads' has been played all over the world. Living now in Quebec, Dave is still working in the industry he left SNFU for and enjoying family life and some well earned calm. More than 15,000 people have now signed a petition to have Downtown Eastside punk rocker Mr. Chi Pig, frontman of the band SNFU, added to Canada's Walk of Fame. The support has poured in since the legendary musician, also known as Ken Chinn, died on July 16 in Vancouver, age 57. Tributes have emerged from the Dead Kennedys' Jello Biafra, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong — who called him "one of the greatest front people I've ever seen" — and even former Premier Rachel Notley of Alberta, Chinn's original home province. The Pulse is remembering Mr. Chi Pig, who spent decades in the neighbourhood and continued writing music until his final days. Many members of the city's music and arts community honoured his legacy following his death. The Pulse talked to veteran punk rocker D.O.A.'s Joe Keithley, as well as activist Garth Mullins with the band Legally Blind. Born Ken Chinn, the punk rocker started SNFU in Edmonton in the 1980s before moving to Vancouver where he lived since. A decade ago, he was the subject of a documentary film, "Open Your Mouth and Say Mr. Chi Pig," in which Chinn and his community explored his art, punk history, and his long-time struggles with a crystal meth addiction and mental illness.
