Kerri Pottharst - Olympic gold medallist former professional beach volleyball player discusses her Olympics career. Talks about beach Volleyball, plus she has a special message for mothers day.
Fellow Townsvillian, Natalie Cook, captured all of Australia with her beach volleyball partner, Kerri Pottharst winning gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. It was and still is an absolutely iconic moment in Australian Sporting history, right up there with Cathy Freeman’s win in the 400m and the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay at the same Games. But that’s not where Nat’s story ends. She went on to compete at another UNBELIEVABLE three Olympic Games! Becoming the first Australian woman to compete at an astonishing five Olympics. Nat was so vulnerable and candid in this chat and I was so grateful to be in this conversation with her. She continues to inspire and advocate for athletes and I just know that she will continue to have a huge impact on sport in Australia! In life, I’m coming to realise more and more, that mindset is everything. That was certainly the case for Kerri Pottharst and her incredible win on Bondi Beach at the 2000 Olympics with teammate Natalie Cook. Their gold-medal winning mindset took them to the top of their sport at a home Olympics and is something that Kerri continues to utilise to this day. Today, we STOP in our TRACTS for this conversation…with a black man! A man who has been in my life for over 20 years and impacted it in ways that continue to unfold…Steve Anderson was born in Louisville, Kentucky in the 60s – which is considered one of the most dangerous cities on earth. When his Dad was shot by his “supposed” friend when he was just 9yrs old, anger smoldered within him, “how could my Mom not press charges? How could the other man, shot in the mouth, live; and my Dad, shot in the leg - die?” So many inbuilt experiences of growing up Black permeated his body before he moved to LA to start life on his own at 21 – but quickly, he began his decades-long navigation of the globe starting in Switzerland.Picked up by two budding beach volleyball players from Australia, he would move to Perth to execute the dream of winning Olympic medals – which he did with a Bronze in ’96 and a Gold in 2000 w Nat Cook & Kerri Pottharst. Marrying his Swiss Aussie wife in 2000, he remained Nat’s coach for 16yrs.During that time, he would head up coaching programs in Bali and Venuatu and leave legacies for athletes and organizations in those countries over the next 10yrs. My Canadian beach team would rise to our best ever World finish of 7th place under his guidance and the things I learned with this man can only be described as “zen tutelage”!Steve became instrumental in my life for being able to ask and express things that sometimes, it felt like, there was no one else to really, be comfortable asking. My Mom married my Black Dad in 1973 (when Interracial marriage was only legalized in the US in 1967 – 6yrs prior) and many family members refused to come to that wedding. My Mom and Dad hailed from one of the most racially charged cities in Canada, being on the Atlantic Coast where many slave boats dropped off “cargo” (and I say it like that bc that’s how it was back then) in the 1800s before heading down to the US cities. There is even a city in Atlantic Canada called “Afric-ville” bc of its dense population of blacks. My last name of Maxwell is actually Scottish bc my great-great-great GrandFather was a cook on the ship where every black person took the Masters name of Maxwell! In 2013, Steve left to head up the whole of Team Canada BVP with his now 5yr old son and soon to be new wife Alicia. He would lead that country to #1 in the world within a short 2 year period.Recently, he was asked by his suburb, aptly named “The Beaches” in Toronto to give the speech for their #BlackLivesMatter march. He begins our conversation with his emotional share of his life experience as a Black Global Citizen of this planet we call earth! Today she is known for being a successful inspirational speaker and presenter, entrepreneur and published author, sharing the insights and benefits of her champion mindset through many different channels / across many different mediums. Welcome to episode six of Starting Point. In this episode, Casey sits down with Australian beach volleyball legend, Natalie Cook. Natalie grew up the oldest of two children in Townsville, Australia, and became the first Australian woman to compete in five different Olympic Games. At her first Olympics in Atlanta, Cook bounced back from a humiliating semi-final defeat to earn bronze against Barbara Fontana and Linda Hanley. Unsatisfied with her finish, Natalie started to dig into championship psychology and was fortunate to cross paths with an upstart motivational speaker named Kurek Ashley. Along with daily mental and emotional training, Kurek helped cultivate confidence in a young Natalie Cook. “The biggest thing I learned from him,” says Natalie, “was to carry myself like a winner. I wanted spectators to look at my posture on the court and think I was winning, regardless of the score.” In 1998, Cook set her sights on Olympic gold in Sydney and dedicated herself to upholding a gold medal standard in all aspects of life. This consisted of eating, sleeping, talking, walking, and training like an Olympic gold medalist. And it paid off. In 2000, Natalie Cook and partner Kerri Pottharst dominated the competition, winning gold in front of their compatriots in Sydney. In this conversation you will hear about all of this and more. You’ll also get a glimpse into Natalie’s childhood and hear a very candid retelling of some pivotal moments from her personal life. So sit back and enjoy this interview with one of the all-time greats, Natalie Cook.
30,000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest in Australia each year. In the US, SCA claims an estimated 325,000. If someone has a heart incident in your workplace, at your gym, or in your home, do you know what to do? What if CPR isn’t working and first responders can’t get there in time? An SCA victim’s chances of survival increase exponentially when a defibrillator is available, and the devices are easy to use. Guy Leech is known as Australia’s #1 Fitness Guy. He won the world’s first professional Ironman race in 1984 and stayed at the top of the sport for the next decade, winning multiple titles including that of 1988 World Ironman Champion. Guy has trained a wide range of athletes, from surfing champion Layne Beachley to Olympic gold medalist Kerri Pottharst. In 2016, a personal tragedy led Guy to his current mission of making defibrillators widely available and training people to use them confidently when faced with SCA. Today, Guy joins us to share the story of the day he could not resuscitate his close friend with CPR alone. He walks us through the statistics around SCA, explaining why people have a much better chance of survival with a defibrillator. Guy discusses the current lack of regulations around defibrillators in public places and the prevalence of cardiovascular issues, even among athletes. Guy also describes the training regimen he followed in his competitive Ironman days, reflecting on whether or not he is healthier now.
