“When the world forgets Afghanistan, we keep speaking. We are the voices of the women who can no longer be heard.”What would you risk for the right to play sport? For Khalida Popal, the answer is everything. This powerful episode of The Game Changers tells the extraordinary story of a woman who defied the Taliban, challenged a corrupt sporting system and used football to fight for the lives and freedoms of women and girls across the world.Khalida Popal was just a child when her family fled Taliban rule in Afghanistan. In the harsh reality of a refugee camp, she discovered football – a game that gave her joy, freedom, and purpose. Returning to Afghanistan as a teenager, she dared to play in public, formed the country's first women's national team and proudly captained her side in the face of threats, abuse and constant danger. But her leadership didn't stop on the pitch. Khalida spoke out about the abuse of female players by senior figures in Afghan football and uncovered horrific corruption at the highest levels. It was these actions that meant she was eventually forced to flee for her life. Now living in Denmark, Khalida continues her relentless activism through the Girl Power Organisation, while leading a global campaign to get FIFA to recognise Afghan women footballers in exile – players stripped of their national identity simply because they are women. In this gripping and deeply moving conversation, Khalida shares how she helped evacuate over 600 women and girls from Afghanistan when the Taliban returned to power in 2021, what it means to lose your identity as a refugee, and why she refuses to stay silent – even when her own life is at risk.Raw, emotional and deeply inspiring, this is not just a story about sport. It's about power, oppression, survival and hope. Khalida Popal is a true game changer.Thank you to Sport England who support The Game Changers Podcast with a National Lottery award.Find out more about The Game Changers podcast here: https://www.fearlesswomen.co.uk/thegamechangersHosted by Sue AnstissProduced by Sam Walker, What Goes On MediaA Fearless Women production

With just over a week to go until International Women's Day, we wanted to welcome a truly inspirational woman in football onto the podcast.Khalida Popal is the former captain of the Afghan women's national team. In fact, if it wasn't for her, the team would never have been formed back in 2007. And if it wasn't for her, the current squad would never have escaped Kabul when the Taliban regained power in August 2021.Now, Khalida faces a new battle with football's authorities. With the Taliban's ban on women's sport, FIFA are refusing to recognise the Afghan team. Rachel speaks to Khalida all about that, the long journey to this point, and why football in particular is such a powerful tool for female empowerment.Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube! Asylum Speakers Podcast with Jaz O'Hara: Stories of Migration
This International Women's Day, It's only right that I bring you the story of one of the most incredible women that I know... Khalida Popal.Khalida grew up playing football with her brothers in Afghanistan, and even though she faced serious discrimination from her community as a result, she went on to form the Afghan women's football league with her friends. Despite death threats at the hands of extremist and anti-women's-rights groups, she went on to be the first woman on the board of the Afghan football federation, the first female employee of the federation, and the captain of the Women's National Team after being the driving force behind it's growth. But as Khalida's profile grew, so too did the threat to her safety, and Khalida was forced to leave Afghanistan and begin her journey as a refugee. After living in various refugee camps she has been granted asylum in Denmark, but has never lost ties with her homeland. Last year, when the Taliban seized power of Afghanistan, Khalida worked tirelessly to campaign for the safe evacuation of the Afghan women's football teams, who had become targets to the Taliban (who do not allow women to participate in or even attend sporting events). Khalida rallied the international community and was eventually successful in safely evacuating over 300 people - the players and their familes, to both Australia and the UK. Khalida continues to advocate for the rights of women and girls through her organisation Girl Power, which uses sport as a tool to empower, connect and unify women and girls from all cultures and social backgrounds. On this weeks episode of #Leadership - What's on your mind? I speak to Khalida Popal. Khalida Popal began breaking down barriers and empowering women in Afghanistan in 2007 when she helped found the Afghan National Women's Soccer Team. She served as the team captain, and she later became the first woman ever hired by the Afghanistan Football Federation. When it became clear that she was no longer safe in the country, she went into exile and has continued her advocacy for the rights of women and girls by establishing the Denmark-based Girl Power Organisation. Girl Power encourages women's empowerment through sport, particularly for refugee and migrant girls. Ms Popal has become an outspoken and deeply respected advocate for women's rights in Afghanistan and beyond. A former defender on the soccer field, she is now a defender and champion of human rights around the globe. Amid the recent fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, she worked tirelessly to help dozens of female senior and youth soccer players from the senior & junior national teams escape and relocate. She has continued to support these girls and their families as they transition to their new countries of residence. Last week we spoke with the amazing Khalida Popal, founder & former captain of the Afghan women's football team, and human rights lawyer Kat Craig, about how they got Khalida's teammates out of the country and out of the hands of the Taliban. We had an amazing reaction from world service members to this show with quite a few getting in touch to see if they could help in any way. Today, we are making the conversation free to all. As the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, members of the country's women's soccer team - once symbols of a new Afghanistan - knew they needed to escape. WSJ's Drew Hinshaw tells the story of how the team's former captain, Khalida Popal, hatched a daring plan for their evacuation.
This episode opens with words from Khalida Popal (in an interview with CNN), former Capitan of the Afghanistan Women's Football Team. Then, Shireen Ahmed talks with Kelly Lindsey, former coach of the Afghanistan Women's Football Team about how Khalida, Kelly and a small and formidable group of people were able to evacuate Afghan footballers, other athletes and vulnerable people to safety in recent weeks, with the help of Human Rights for All in Australia. As the world reels from the Taliban's return to power, we examine the consequences for sport and inclusivity in Afghanistan. The founder of the country's women's football team Khalida Popal tells us about fears for her players' safety. We'll hear why the Taliban ideology could threaten the Afghan cricketing fairytale. And why the dreams of the country's Paralympians appear to be over.
Taliban spokesmen have said they'll be more accommodating toward journalists than in previous years, but Ayesha Tanzeem, the Afghanistan Pakistan bureau chief for Voice of America, is wary. And, Khalida Popal says she founded the Afghan women's football team in 2007 as an act of defiance against the Taliban. Now in exile, she is fielding calls from her former teammates who fear for their lives. Also, Olympic athletes may have left the Games, but the athletes' village in Tokyo is back in use, currently filling up with 4,000 Paralympian athletes, ready to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Khalida is one of the bravest women I know. We talk about her courage and determination to speak out for women, to speak out for change in Afghanistan, even when her life was threatened. As a girl Khalida played football with her brothers. When she became a teenager this had to stop. Instead, she set up a school team and went on to become captain of Afghanistan's national team. She now lives in Denmark with her family after receiving death threats. Khalida recently led the investigation into the president of the Afghanistan Football Association, Keramuudin Karim, who was sexually assaulting women in the team. Karim is now banned from all sports for life and the case sparked the Me Too movement in Afghanistan. Khalida is a powerful, bold voice for women and women's rights who will inspire you to use your visibility and voice to fulfil your true purpose.

I dag bor hun i Danmark og sætter fokus på lighed og kvindefodbold. Vært: Arnela Muminovic
As the growth of the women’s game continues, I look at the sexual abuse case affecting the Afghanistan Women’s National Team. Brought to the media’s attention by ex player Khalida Popal, several squad players sought Popal out to confide in her regarding them being sexually abused by head of Afghanistan Football Federation Keramuudin Kerim. I talk about whether the football world is doing enough to protect players at risk of exploitation.
It's a month since four women raised allegations of physical and sexual abuse within the Afghanistan women's football team. They claim the abuse took place at the federation’s headquarters and at a training camp in Jordan. The head of Afghanistan football Keramuddin Keram, against whom specific allegations were made, has been suspended. He “vigorously rejects" what he calls "false accusations". Khalida Popal has been involved with the team as player, coach and administrator since she founded it 12 years ago - and started investigating allegations raised with her. Khalida tells Sportshour about the reaction to her speaking out and how that has encouraged more people to come forward. Elsewhere, this week Egypt was named as the new host of this year's Africa Cup of Nations, after the original host Cameroon was stripped of the title. The Confederation of African Football, cited delays in the progress of Cameroon's preparation for the tournament as the reason for the re-allocation, but AFCON will go ahead in June. Egypt has only five months to prepare....so can it be a success? From the African Cup of Nations to the Asian Cup and for the Yemen football team, it really is a miracle they're there at all. Football has ground to a halt in the country. The league is suspended and the infrastructure has all but collapsed. Stadiums have been reduced to rubble and clubs are disintegrating. This is all a direct consequence of war. The escalation of the conflict between the internationally-recognised Hadi (PRO: HARDY) government and Houthi rebels has engulfed Yemen in unspeakable torment. We hear what challenges the team's players face on a daily basis - with tales of some going off to fight and others being kidnapped. And as one of Britain's greatest ever sportsmen announces his retirement this year, what legacy will former World Number One Andy Murray leave in tennis? We speak to Terry Mabbitt, who was the national coach of Scotland when Murray was coming through the ranks as a youngster. Mabbitt says Murray was the best six-year-old he had ever seen. For years, Khalida Popal has been the face of the Afghanistan women's national team, which has been a success story bringing the sport of soccer to more women in her home country. Popal helped raise her team's profile and even got sponsorships from Soccer Without Borders and Hummel, which produced uniforms with headscarves for the team. But recently Popal did her own investigation and found evidence that Afghan soccer federation officials, including president Keramuddin Karim, had physically and sexually abused women's players (which he denies). FIFA has suspended Karim, and the Afghan government has started an investigation into the federation. Popal, who fled to live in Denmark a few years ago, shares her story, and she is followed by Hailai Arghandiwal, an Afghan-American member of the team who recently graduated from Santa Clara University and just signed with the Italian Serie A club Florentia. Khalida Popal, standing up to the Taliban Former Afghanistan women's team captain Khalida Popal grew up in a nation under Taliban rule where women were banned from playing any form of sport. She learned to play silently with friends to avoid detection, played on pitches once used for public executions and suffered physical and verbal abuse. Khalida fled her country, years later, and with her playing career now over she looks back on her life and tells us of her dream to one day return home as head of their FA. Bon soire Napoleon, the life of Raymond Kopa Raymond Kopa died earlier this month at the age of 85. He was the first French player to win the Ballon D'or and finished in the top three on a total of four occasions. He was the first player to boast a commercial interest, (his own sportswear brand), something no player would be without today. He was also one of the founding fathers of the first players union. Nicknamed 'The Little Napoleon', he was part of the Real Madrid side that dominated the 50s, he also played for Stade de Reims in the first ever European Cup final. We hear Kopa's only BBC World Service interview and Reims Sporting Director Alexandre Barbier pays tribute. Alessandro Costacurta interview The former Italy and AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta looks back on his time playing alongside Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi. Arguably the most dominant defence of all time, he says the team 'choked' their opponents into submission and blames Milan's recent problems on the absence of a 'teacher' like Baresi or Maldini. He also claims Milan's owner is 'too old' to take the team back to the top and admits Inter Milan are the more likely of the two teams to challenge for Serie A titles in the near future. A night on the tiles with Kosovo James Montague reports from Kosovo where the national team coach Albert Bunjaki staged a flash mob at a classical music concert to stir up national pride amongst his players. Kosovo are hoping to record their first ever competitive win when they face Iceland this weekend. We also hear from Manchester City and Kosovo player Bersant Celina who recently jumped into the crowd to tear down a 'Kosovo is Serbia' banner at an FC Twente match (he's on loan there). The tragedy of Justin Fashanu Leroy Rosenior played with Justin Fashanu at West Ham, he looks back on their time at the club and examines how close (or far away) football is from convincing gay players they are safe to come out whilst continuing their careers. He also tells us how Fashanu's suicide changed his life.
Sarah Brown talks to Kathy Lette, Leslie Caron, Emma Barnett, Gemma Cairney, June Sarpong, DJ Cuppy, Manal Abazeed of the White Helmets and a host of successful and fascinating women eager to rewrite the code for all girls and women at an event held on 7th March 2017 ahead of International Women’s Day. Join in by listening to this episode of Better Angels, be inspired by their actions and find out how to join in the challenge of #RewritingTheCode for gender equality. This episode looks at those embedded values that are with a girl even before she is born, all the values that surround who she is, what she gets to believe she can be, what the opportunities are that come her way, the doors that are open for her, the support that she gets. While strides have been made in equal opportunities for girls and women, there’s an unwritten code that holds still many girls back at an early age pretty much everywhere in the world. The advent of new technology, changes to the workplace and global political climate, instead of helping, could turn back the clock on progress. This is the episode that sets out to reverse this! Featured in this unique episode is award winning actress and dancer, Leslie Caron, journalist and broadcaster, Emma Barnett, television presenter, June Sarpong, bestselling author, Kathy Lette, radio presenter and former fashion stylist, Gemma Cairney, co-founder of the Stemettes, Anne-Marie Imafidon, television producer, Kate Harwood, Director General of the Institute of Directors, Stephen Martin, Khaleda Yesmin of Theirworld, Vice President of Intel Corporate Affairs & President of Intel Foundation, Rosalind Hudnell, DJ and Producer, DJ Cuppy, former Captain of Afghanistan’s national football team and founder of Girl Up, Khalida Popal, Member of Parliament in the UK, Alison McGovern, and Manal Abazeed of the Syria Civil Defence (also known as White Helmets).
