This week the team 'reads' its first UNTRANSLATED manga, jumping into Season 3 of MOONLIGHT MILE by Yasuo Otagaki. Self-serialized by the author, this sci-fi action manga set on the moon creates a unique experience for the Mangasplainers, but will Chip dig it when he has to turn his head sideways to read the Google Translate text?PLUS! On this week's Manga Must Reads, we check back in with Tsutomu Nihei's Knights of Sidonia for a somewhat-expanded look at another spacefaring sci-fi manga. Episode 195. This month we finished reading the sci-fi manga series Knights of Sidonia by Tsutomu Nihei. The scientists of Sidonia are continuing to experiment with human/gauna hybrids, but they're not all as successful as Tsumugi. Tanikaze's domestic life grows with new housemates and new romantic rivalries and tensions. The pilots try to distract themselves from ongoing battles with a popularity contest, but all their bonds are at stake when a member of the Sidonia's immortal crew has a disastrous new plan to try and save humanity. The Whatnauts present The Review Show, a weekly book club style podcast for all sorts of pop culture. We cover a variety of genres and mediums — movies, TV shows, comics, anime, manga, audio dramas — picking out a specific piece of entertainment that we can cover in a week's time. Every episode, your intrepid co-hosts Kyle and Melissa dive into the media of the week (with a spoiler warning!), give recommendations, and take turns pitching the next topic. For one episode a month, we check in with continuing coverage on a longer title, like a full TV series or comics run, and follow it all the way to the end. Join us for fun discussions on a wild variety of entertainment you should know! Check out our other podcasts here, or wherever you get your podcasts. Episode 191. For this monthly special, we read volumes 1-8 of the sci-fi manga Knights of Sidonia by Tsutomu Nihei, and next month we'll conclude the series with volumes 9-15. Nagate Tanikaze has lived his entire life alone in the depths of a massive spaceship, experiencing the world through his grandfather's stories and old training simulators. When he ventures out into the rest of the ship, he's taken into the pilot program, controlling a Garde mech to fight the mysterious shape-shifting aliens known as the Guana. Tanikaze proves himself as a pilot as he awkwardly adapts to the strange new community around him. Welp. It certainly was a busy week, last week. Everything seemed to happen within the span of seven days, from Evangelion hitting Amazon, Stone Ocean confirmed to be for Netflix in December, the Crunchyroll sale being closed and finalized, Discotek at Otakon, a LOT went down in a very small amount of time. And we're here (and Sketch, too, he's back) to run down all of the insane developments in the industry, the drops that have left us scratching our heads, and the surprises that have us rather giddy in anticipation for what's to come. It's an extra-packed show, so get comfortable and enjoy the wild ride. And just remember, all the world's a stage. Usually a soundstage. cold open - the deal is finalized 8:32 - intro 10:44 - WELP. Hard to believe that it’s been four months since the world, as we knew it, completely changed to a sudden standstill in the wake of… well, everything. Not that you’d notice it in some areas, but trust me, things are still pretty bad out there. It’s also lead to the shutdown and suspension of the anime convention circuit – that includes YOU, Anime Matsuri – but thanks to the power of the internet the shows are still able to go on… if only a bit smaller than usual. But that means you don’t have to worry about crowds this time around, which is always a net positive. So, for this landmark 75th episode of the show, we have a sizable amount of news topics to discuss, including the usual routine of streaming news, upcoming projects, some surprising series coming very soon, and the major announcements coming out of the virtual-slash-online Anime Expo Lite and FunimationCon events, which comes with the worst-kept secret of the summer: THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU. Let’s just hope that the world won’t actually end with us losing our patience and minds in the wake of… again, everything. 4:55 – RIP Tatsufumi Itō7:19 – Kyoto Animation memorial event happening July 188:59 – Crunchyroll now has PRECURE16:10 – Cyberpunk: Edgerunners project coming in 202222:58 – GKIDS acquires Inu-Oh and Earwig and the Witch films26:45 – Scott Pilgrim… the anime?
