The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, the established annual celebration of prestige comic artists, creators and publishers, once again took over a picturesque town in the UK's Lake District... but this time they weren't setting up their stalls in Kendal. Instead, they had moved beside your actual lake - I know, how novel! - with LICAF holding court in Bowness-On-Windermere over the weekend of Friday 14th-Sunday 16th October. I wasn't able to make it to the rest of the weekend's festivities - missing, by all accounts, some amazing panels. signings and appearances by world-renowned comic superstars, a performance by Charlie Adlard and his band, karaoke that will only be saved in the memory of those there and some boozy nights! However, what I took in on the Sunday was more than enough to tell me that this iteration of The Lakes International Comic Art Festival continues in the trend of a very respectable and enjoyable comic celebration. During my day, I managed to attend a number of panels featuring some of the world's finest comic artists and writers, including this session with celebrated prose and comics writer Greg Rucka (BLACK MAGICK / STUMPTOWN / LAZURUS) who pulled no punches and barely drew breath as he dived deep into his meager family background, his introductions to and motivations for writing, and his forthright thoughts on the business of getting a certain style of story either published or on the big and small screens. It's quite the ride - but you'd expect nothing less from Greg Rucka. Enjoy this lively chat, hosted by Chris Thompson (@popculturehound)

During my day, I managed to speak to a number of creatives who had been exhibiting at the show, including Rachael Smith who was basking in the glow of not only raving plaudits and reviews for her books - including the re-released WIRED UP WRONG and the standout of the lockdown QUARANTINE COMIX - but also of impending motherhood with a bairn on imminent arrival! Rachael talks to how QUARANTINE COMIX was being received by the Lakes crowds, how her weekend in the Comics Marketplace had gone and what was next for her and her work... s09e04 LAKES FESTIVAL 2021 * ORIGINALLY LIVESTREAMED, Sunday 17th October 2021 * Catch the full livestream as it goes out live by being a Patreon supporter of the channel: www.patreon.com/EnglishmanSDCC Wow - it really does feel like comic cons are fully back with a vengeance, with MCM Comic Con London kicking off next weekend at the ExCel Centre, guests and announcements rolling out for Wales Comic Con: Telford Takeover and Thought Bubble, and, this weekend, The Lakes International Comic Art Festival setting out its stalls all around Kendal in the Lake District. But, while the events are back, does that mean that the vibe is back, also? We find out from two attendees - one reporting on, and one exhibiting at , the festival - what it's really been like with boots on the ground at this usually vibrant and vital festival. Has the energy been there as the long nights kick in? The cartoonist, writer and illustrator Posy Simmonds brilliantly captures the ambitions and pretensions of the literary world, and the journalist and curator Paul Gravett has worked in comics publishing for decades. Together they bring graphic novels and comic books to the foreground with the Slightly Foxed team. We draw moral lessons from the Ally Sloper cartoons of the 1870s, glimpse Frans Masereel's wordless woodcut stories of the 1920s, view the pictorial politics of Citizen 13660 by Miné Okubo in the 1940s and revisit Art Spiegelman's 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus before taking a closer look at more contemporary works. From a tragicomic summer with Joff Winterhart, nuclear explosions with Raymond Briggs, the shadow of James Joyce with Mary and Bryan Talbot and an Iranian childhood with Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, the discussion moves through panels, frames, splashes and spreads to Posy Simmonds's own methods in bringing literature to life, including crosshatching to Vivaldi. Originally serialized in the Guardian, Posy's Gemma Bovery builds on the bones of Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Tamara Drewe draws from Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd, while Cassandra Darke takes inspiration from Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Though rooted in the classics, the devil is in Posy's detail, be it real French coffee pots, the joy of characters' names, such as Kevin Penwallet, and fictional places, such as Tresoddit. We continue our travels off the beaten track with our usual round-up of reading recommendations, and a trip to Gilbert White's House and Gardens in Hampshire, where we view the landscapes that sparked his evergreen classic The Natural History of Selborne. s08e05 - In Conversation with Lakes Festival Director JULIE TAIT ** Originally Aired on YouTube, Sunday 13th September 2020 ** The challenges placed on every aspect of pop culture, in the wake of the years global pandemic, have spilt over into every aspect of comics fandom including conventions and fan gatherings being cancelled across the board. Many of the organisers of such events have taken to the internet, putting on 'virtual cons'... but these substitutions have been found to work best when replicating a specific branch of fandom. How does this solution apply when your physical event covers many schools of creativity and even a large footprint, over a town or city? The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is an annual event held in the picturesque city of Kendal in the Lake District, one that is held in multiple venues - art installations, libraries, schools, shopping centres and more - over the course of a weekend, similar in scale (and, indeed, reputation) to the European benchmark for such events, Angouleme. Its Director/Creator Julie Tait joins us to talk about what it has taken to transpose such a sprawling presentation into cyberspace... ------------- TALKIN' CON: A CUP O' TEA with AN ENGLISHMAN IN SAN DIEGO A bi-weekly livestream, hosted by Leonard Sultana, talking comic conventions, con culture and pop culture - LIVE Sundays, 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm GMT Featuring Special Guests, spotlight features, community chat and convention news updates Subscribe, Like and Turn On Notifications at www.youtube.com/EnglishmanSDCC www.theconventioncollective.com/anenglishmaninsandiego

13th October 2019, Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal UK The Lakes International Comic Art Festival (LICAF) once again took over the town of Kendal in the UK’s picturesque Lakes District, with plenty of comics talent from across the globe appearing at numerous venues – from the Westmoreland Shopping Centre to the Brewery Arts Centre – to meet and greet with enthusiastic fans. The latter venue has a couple of stages including a full cinema/theatre space in which three master storytellers talked with Chris Thompson about the lure and appeal of the DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS system and roleplaying games in general: two regular players in the form of Becky Cloonan (THE PUNISHER, SOUTHERN CROSS, GOTHAM ACADEMY) and Andy Diggle (2000AD, THE LOSERS, HARDCORE) and also a relative noob to the scene, Si Spurrier (CODA, X-MEN LEGACY, STAR WARS). In this hour conversation, the group discussed their own history with role-playing games, how the nature of interactive storytelling informed their own narratives, and what they got creatively out of playing in their sessions. Thompson is quite experienced in playing D&D from an early age, too, so for Spurrier, this became the deep-dive introduction to role-playing that he felt he needed to get into the scene himself! Thanks to the team at Lakes International Comic Art Festival for hosting the session, and to Si, Becky, Andy and Chris for allowing me to record it.

LICAF 2018: Comics Laureate Interviews (Charlie Adlard & Hannah Berry), Lakes International Comic Art Festival 15th October 2018 As part of the festival - held annually in the Lake District town of Kendal - a post has been created to advocate the art form of comics to the wider world: an esteemed postion which seeks to do so much good, not only for the medium but also for those that maybe haven't embraced it before. Two legends of the comics industry have held the two-year allocated position previously, first WATCHMEN artist Dave Gibbons from 2014-2016, and then in 2016 THE WALKING DEAD artist Charlie Adlard. Now, for the 2018-2020 allocation of the role, the duty falls on the shoulders of Hannah Berry: a name that maybe not-as-well-known to the mainstream audience but for those who follow independent comics, are fully aware of her talent, her incredible and evocative output, her passion for the medium and her enthusiasm to spread the word far and wide, making her the perfect person for the job. Here we speak to outgoing incumbent of the Comics Laureate role. Charlie Adlard, about what he feels he has achieved in the position - as well as imparting some words of wisdom for his successor - and Hannah Berry herself, speaking to what has inspired her since she was approached and who she hopes to reach during her time in the role. Thanks to Charlie and hannah for their time on these interviews, and also to the organisers of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival for their generosity and access at the event. We do treat you all so well as this episode we have two interviews. First we have a chat with Leonard Sultana from the website An Englishman in San Diego. We discuss his love of comics, the future of DC movies, the San Diego Comic Con and the UK con scene. We recorded this in October 2017 just before the LICAF at a joyful pub so ignore the background noise. We talk about two new kick starters, one from The Etherington Brothers and the other Nick Prolix. We also shout out about the first lot of announced guests to the 2018 Lakes International Comic Art Festival... and its good. Keep an eye out too for a brand new show from us... called My Neighbour, it will be a monthly Ghibli based review show.ike talks about how his comic tastes have changed and how he's reading more. In particular he looks at Monstrous. Pete continues with part 5 of Jack Kirby's life looking at the years 1955 to 1958. A short time frame but a very important one in Jacks career. We close the show with some music from a local band based in Lancaster called Promethium. Some would say you need to bow to the god of metal but I say just rock. The track's called Shell Shock from their new album Faces of War.Thank you for listening.http://www.comicartpodcast.ukTwitter: @comicartfestpodFacebook: ComicArtPodcastInstagram: ComicArtPodcastAlso on YouTubeFind all about the festival at http://www.comicartfestival.comLogo designed by Pete Taylor at http://www.thismanthispete.comContributions by Mike Williams (@CthulhuPunk) and Pete Taylor (@thismanthispete).Title Music: Don’t Fool Yourself by Pop Noir

A different episode this time as rather than interviewing a creator we pick Pete Taylors brains on how to create a comic. We start from the beginning with thinking up ideas to writing and then drawing the comic. Finally we finish with what many creators believe is the hardest part and promotion. This was discussed to help us in our journey of creating our own comic but we hope it helps others as well.We review Square #16 Summer Dairies by Ian M which as it says is a day to day comic of Ian's life. We also look at The Smell of Starving Boys by Frederik Peters and Loo Hui Phang which follows an exploration into the territories of the west of Mississippi as a group of three map an area they hope one day will support a new civilisation. Mike continues his look at TV series moving into comics with the wonderful Sons of Anarchy and we have news all about the 2018 Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Yes... the news has started. Time to get all excited. Please like and subscribe on any podcast service. Any reviews will be welcomed with a huge smile. Recorded at The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, held in Kendal UK, on Saturday 17th October 2015 (Please note: this recording ends abruptly, due to the recording medium losing power - trust me when I say, the panel ends with rapturous applause!) "Award-winning artistic chameleon and Marvel Architect Stuart Immonen began his comics career in 1988, and he's worked for most of the industry's major publishers - including Marvel, DC and Image - in the quarter-century since. During his decade-long tenure at DC, in addition to writing and pencilling Adventures Of Superman, Stuart illustrated the critically-acclaimed mini-series Superman: Secret Identity. For Marvel, as well as 2011's Fear Itself event, he has drawn such high-profile series as Ultimate Spider-Man, The Mighty Thor, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers and the cult favourite Nextwave: Agents Of H.A.T.E. After joining forces with Mark Waid to inaugurate Marvel's digital Infinite Comics line, in the Marvel NOW! era, Immonen launched All-New X-Men and All-New Captain America. His creator-owned credits include collaborations with Kurt Busiek on Shockrockets and Superstar, and with wife Kathryn Immonen on Never As Bad As You Thunk, Moving Pictures and the recently-completed Russian Olive To Red King. Need we say more? Join Stuart Immonen and festival patron Sean Phillips in a live draw event where Stuart will also discuss his life and work."
