Say hello to Joe McCulloch, everybody! Co-editor of TCJ.com, formerly of Comics Comics, Savage Critics, and the legendary Jog the Blog, Joe is the headliner of our main show Comic Books are Burning in Hell, and the best comics critic of the internet era. There's no other way to say it: no one since Gary Groth has contributed as much high level writing and thinking about the form as Joe. But even the greats are fallible! Case in point: this episode, in which he deigns to babble about Bryan Talbot and Batman at great length with us. That's right folks: it's time for a podcast about some all-time Serious Superhero Comics, the great Legends of the Dark Knight deep cut BATMAN: MASK. Wanna listen?
The cartoonist, writer and illustrator Posy Simmonds brilliantly captures the ambitions and pretensions of the literary world, and the journalist and curator Paul Gravett has worked in comics publishing for decades. Together they bring graphic novels and comic books to the foreground with the Slightly Foxed team. We draw moral lessons from the Ally Sloper cartoons of the 1870s, glimpse Frans Masereel's wordless woodcut stories of the 1920s, view the pictorial politics of Citizen 13660 by Miné Okubo in the 1940s and revisit Art Spiegelman's 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus before taking a closer look at more contemporary works. From a tragicomic summer with Joff Winterhart, nuclear explosions with Raymond Briggs, the shadow of James Joyce with Mary and Bryan Talbot and an Iranian childhood with Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, the discussion moves through panels, frames, splashes and spreads to Posy Simmonds's own methods in bringing literature to life, including crosshatching to Vivaldi. Originally serialized in the Guardian, Posy's Gemma Bovery builds on the bones of Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Tamara Drewe draws from Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd, while Cassandra Darke takes inspiration from Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Though rooted in the classics, the devil is in Posy's detail, be it real French coffee pots, the joy of characters' names, such as Kevin Penwallet, and fictional places, such as Tresoddit. We continue our travels off the beaten track with our usual round-up of reading recommendations, and a trip to Gilbert White's House and Gardens in Hampshire, where we view the landscapes that sparked his evergreen classic The Natural History of Selborne. Are you into Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison and Garth Ennis? Well, they derived a lot of inspiration from Bryan Talbot's multiverse epic The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, which we're picking apart in this episode. Guest-host Adam Boretz, an editor at The Millions and Publishers Weekly, swings by to share his take and lecture us about nachos in the 80s (among other things). How does Luther Arkwright hold up after all these decades? Why are British comic authors so obsessed with tantric sex? Why does reading the first third of this fantasy yarn feel like Ryan just assigned everyone homework? The Adventures of Luther Arkwright is beautiful, multilayered, and complex - often too compelx for its own intelligibility. In Raman's words, "It's not just tits and the hobbit."

Paul and AJ continue their year-long Four-Color Flashback exploration of The Sandman, discussing everything from barophobia to Greek myth, from the once-great city of Baghdad to the Thriller video. Book Talk branches out into both non-fiction and graphic novels with the unconventional biography Dotter of her Father's Eyes. Mary and Bryan Talbot's book follows two life stories: that of Mary, the daughter of a pre-eminent scholar of James Joyce, and of Joyce's own daughter, Lucia. The unique approach to the biographies helped make this the first graphic novel to win the Costa biography award earlier this year.Host Paul Gallagher sits down with Keir Hind, books section editor for The Skinny, and artist and graphic novel writer Damon Herd to discuss how well this book works as a graphic novel, the collaboration between author and illustrator and the role of father-daughter relationships on the page.Listen to hear what our guests thought and join the discussion in the comments below, tweeting us your thoughts to @scottishbktrust, or hit us with a comment on our Facebook page.
Libby Purves is joined by Hans Klok, Adrian Jackson, Sabrina Jean, Mary M Talbot and Dave Kelly. Illusionist Hans Klok, reputedly 'the fastest magician in the world', has been performing magic since he was ten years old. He recently played shows at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, where Pamela Anderson was his glamorous assistant. He brings his homage to Harry Houdini, The Houdini Experience, to London. The show combines daredevil stunts, illusions and tricks. The Houdini Experience is at the Sadler's Wells Peacock Theatre. Adrian Jackson is a writer and director, who set up the theatre company 'Cardboard Citizens'. His latest play 'A Few Man Fridays' tells the story of how the British Government evicted 2000 islanders from the Chagos islands in the Indian Ocean during the cold war to make way for a US military base. Sabrina Jean's family were part of that community who eventually settled in the UK. She is secretary of the UK Chagos Support Association. A Few Man Fridays is at London's Riverside Studios. Scholar Mary M Talbot's latest book 'Dotter of her Father's Eyes' is part biography and part personal history which contrasts two coming of age narratives; that of Lucia, the daughter of James Joyce, and that of the author herself who is the daughter of an eminent Joycean scholar. Dotter of her Father's Eyes by Mary M Talbot with illustrations by Bryan Talbot is published by Jonathan Cape. Dave Kelly lost his sight fifteen years ago to a rare eye condition, retinitis pigmentosa. After two years of struggling to adjust to his condition, he was inspired to set up his own charity, Daisy UK. The charity runs sports sessions for the disabled, including blind football and wheelchair basketball. The project will use funding from Sport Relief to run one day sports courses for young people, both disabled and able bodied, and their carers. Producer: Paula McGinley.
