Motorists in Clare are being urged to drive with extreme care this morning, after temperatures dipped as low as minus seven degrees overnight. It's another bitterly cold day with an orange weather warning for low temperatures and ice remaining in place until 11 this morning for most of the country, when it will then revert to the lower yellow warning until lunchtime tomorrow. Travelling conditions are dangerous with frost, ice, lying snow and freezing fog and road temperatures remain below freezing, with drivers being warned to prepare for black ice even on treated roads. Clare County Council crews are continuing to treat priority routes according to the Winter Maintenance Plan. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Cyril Feeney, Senior Engineer in Clare County Council's Roads, Environment and Water Service Department. To understand how the freezing temperatures are impacting Clare's farming community, Alan Morrissey also spoke with Stephen Walsh, Clare IFA County Chair. Photo (c): Dimaberlinphotos via Canva.com

The Clare County Chair of the IFA claims more needs to be done to bring farmer's incomes in line with industrial wages in the coming year. It follows a recent Teagasc report, which identified the average farmers wage to be just over €30,000 at the end of 2024, an increase of 40% on last year, but still falls €15,000 short of desired levels. Farming has been identified as being worth over €16 billion to the Irish economy, with products exported to 109 countries across the world. Clare IFA Chairperson and Feakle farmer, Stephen Walsh says although improvements to farmers livelihoods were seen in 2024, it would have been difficult for that not to be the case.
As this Friday's general election edges ever closer, we're going to focus on the key issues affecting the business and farming sectors in this county. These were two topics that were covered during our final general election debate last Friday. Are the general election campaign promises sounding good? To discuss all of this and more, Alan Morrissey was joined by IFA Chair, Stephen Walsh, Patrick Bourke of Patrick Bourke Menswear, and Shannon Chamber President, Eoin Gavin. Clare's IFA Chair says the average income for farmers must be above the industrial wage to solve the sector's recruitment and retention crisis. It comes as the Department of Agriculture is set to approve a new commission on generational renewal in order to combat the rising proportion of farmers approaching retirement age. Agriculture currently contributes over €1bn to Clare's economy and supports over 12,000 jobs. Feakle farmer Stephen Walsh says the future of this county's food production is on the line.

Clare's IFA Chair is imploring the Government to put a stringent plan in place to secure of recovery of Ash trees into the future. It comes as Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Senator Pippa Hacket has opened a new scheme to compensate farmers who have replanted plantations impacted by ash dieback. Under the Climate Action Performance Payment, landowners will receive €5,000 per hectare replanted in three installments. Feakle farmer Stephen Walsh fears there will be a major drop in production if the scheme's not managed correctly.
The brother of a West Clare murder victim has vowed to do everything in his power to ensure his sister's killer remains behind bars. Today marks the 19th anniversary of Ann Walsh, who lost her life at the age of just 23, when she was strangled by her former boyfriend on the grounds of the local church. Raymond Donovan subsequently received a life sentence and although his most application for Parole was refused last year, he will be eligible to apply again in April - something Ann's family will have to make presentations against. Ann's brother Stephen Walsh says the release of his sister's murder would cause indescribable hurt.
It's not a standard show, as we record on Monday night after Shels scoreless draw with Derry City and it appears that the burning question is - what is the standard? Owen Heary, a multiple league winner with Shels, dials in to offer his take on the panache free situation at the top of the table and mull over what happens from here. There's plenty of love for the League of Ireland from Luke Dennison, the Drogheda United goalkeeper from California, who chatted with Dan after their draw with Bohemians. Aside from those chats, we've got a busy mailbag with more Stephen Walsh jibes, Dublin bias, and a lively instalment of ref chat. Be warned: there's a few questions about the standard. What we have no doubts about is the standard of our sponsors with Rascals Brewing, Lily's Childcare, Collar & Cuff and Future Ticketing giving us the consistency we need to keep this show on the road.

Galway United are back on the road again this Friday (7th June 2024) when they travel to Derry City in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division. This is the Tribesmen's second trip up north this season and they came back from Derry in March with a 1-0 win thanks to Stephen Walsh's late goal. Despite defeat to St. Patrick's Athletic last week, Galway United have benefitted from a nine-game unbeaten run beforehand to currently sit in fifth spot on on 27 points, eight behind second placed Derry City but with three games in hand. But the Candystripes, who include Loughrea's Pat Hoban (10 Premier Division goals this year), in their attack, and have only lost twice since in their last 14 games (both against Shamrock Rovers). Leading up to the game, Galway United manager John Caulfield has been chatting to Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly. == Kick-off at the Ryan McBride Brandywell on Friday is 7.45pm and we'll have LIVE coverage on 'Over The Line' here on Galway Bay FM. In Match of the Dave, we met Stephen Walsh who is just about to undertake a very special cycle in memory of his beloved wife, Dolores.
Dan is back, although he's been outdone by producer Derek on the travel front as we attempt to sprint through the events of another manic week but find the path blocked by some substantial news hurdles. What does Jon Daly's departure say about St Patrick's Athletic? How will Stephen O'Donnell function as Alan Reynolds assistant? Is it 'Noel King's Dundalk' yet? We also have Johnny's chat with Ollie Horgan after a big win at Bohemians, with an unexpected Lionel Richie cameo. Beyond that, we have a packed mailbag with all the usual spin-offs. There's the great Stephen Walsh goalscoring debate, an irrational attack on GAA intercounty 'stars', relegation predictions without the predictions and much more. So with thanks to Rascals Brewery, Collar & Cuff, Future Ticketing and Lily's Childcare, the time has come, to raise the roof and have some fun, let the podcast play on, play on, play on.

Clare's New IFA Chair is calling for enhanced compensation for farmers operating on and maintaining Natura designated sites. Figures from the Department of Agriculture show there are currently 1,935 herds grazing on the protected ecological sites in this county. It's the sixth-highest rate nationwide and farmers impacted, are generally obligated to invest in environmental measures and restrict intensive farming practices. Feakle farmer Stephen Walsh insists a two-pronged solution is needed.
The Chair of the Irish Farmers' Association in Clare insists farmers need guaranteed income supports if environmentally-friendly practices are to be adopted. He was speaking at a special meeting of Clare County Council and IFA representatives this week at which the local authority formally extended its support to the IFA's 'Enough is Enough' campaign. The aim of the campaign is to highlight of the level of dissatisfaction amongst farmers with the role of EU policy in the Irish agricultural sector. Clare IFA Chair and Feakle native Stephen Walsh says farmers aren't anti-environment but can't survive if they're not adequately supported.
Clare's Green Party councillor admits the level of red tape facing farmers must be reduced if the sector is to survive into the future. The local authority has formally given its support to the Irish Farmers' Assocation's 'Enough is Enough' campaign at a special meeting this week. Farmers' frustration was the subject of discussion at Áras Chontae an Chláir this week as members of Clare County Council met with IFA representatives. The meeting heard that 12,000 people in Clare are employed within the agricultural sector in some way, representing 20% of the county's working population. With an estimated 508,000 acres of farm land in the county, agriculture contributes over €1 billion to the local economy annually, according to IFA figures. Many of those in attendance at this week's meeting spoke of the challenges farmers are having in doing their time and labour intensive work, while also keeping up with mounting paperwork and bureaucracy. Kilrush Fine Gael Councillor and small farmer Gabriel Keating says those working in the sector need to know they'll be given sufficient income support to justify the intensive "bookwork" involved in various schemes. Taking its lead from its European counterparts, the Irish Farmers' Association has recently launched its 'Enough is Enough' campaign, which questions the role of EU policy in Irish agriculture. Clare County Council has officially endorsed the campaign which is seeking a "fundamental reset of how farm policy is devised and implemented both at the EU and in Ireland". A consistent theme in recent European protests against the introduction of the Nature Restoration law has been the claim that an EU "green agenda" is making farming less attractive. The average age of a farmer in Clare is now 59, and Lahinch Green Party Councillor Liam Grant says the sector must become less about bureaucracy if young people are to be encouraged to pursue a career in farming. Feakle native Stephen Walsh, who was elected Clare County Chair of the IFA last month, says the Government can't plan for the future of the agricultural sector, without listening to farmers' concerns.
It's already Galway United's fifth game in this year's SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they host Drogheda United on Friday (8th March 2024). The Tribesmen are currently in fourth place on six points after going down to Shelbourne 1-0 on Monday. Drogheda United picked their first points with a 2-1 victory against Bohemians and are three places behind their opponents. They haven't met in the league since 2020 when Drogheda United beat Galway twice on their way to promotion but both clubs will have a different outlook regarding playing personnel. Killian Brouder is likely to be Galway's only survivor. Stephen Walsh returns from a three-game suspension but Colm Horgan (knee) looks set to miss out. Leading up the game, Galway United manager John Caulfield has been chatting to Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly. == Kick-off at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday is 7.45pm and we'll have LIVE coverage on 'Over The Line' on Galway Bay FM.

A 90th minute equaliser from Maurice Nugent gave ten man Galway United a deserved 1-1 draw away to Cork City at Turners Cross. Galway United were reduced to ten men before half time when Stephen Walsh was sent off. A decision seen as controversial as video footage shows nothing of any note. Galway United coach Johnny Glynn was also sent off around the same time. Gary Baxter's volley with ten minutes remaining looked to have given Cork the win but United fought on and Nugent's equaliser came at the perfect time. We are drawn to wildness and disorder, argues historian Bettany Hughes. She tells Andrew Marr about the attraction of Bacchus, the god of wine and fertility, and the subject of a new BBC Four documentary. Bacchus (also known as Dionysus) has been a symbol of excess ever since Roman maidens fled to the woods and drank wine in his name. Hughes follows the Bacchic cult through history, and argues that chaos has been as important to civilisation as reason and restraint. The wood - scene of so many Bacchic revelries - comes to life in nature writer John Lewis-Stempel's new account, The Wood: The Life and Times of Cockshutt Wood. Through poetry, folklore and his own observations he asks what it is that draws us to magical spaces. Today we revel in feelings of joy and wonder, but feelings themselves are a surprisingly modern invention, says cultural historian Rachel Hewitt. She looks back at the 1790s, the decade when men and women of learning first began to take emotions seriously. Hewitt explains how an Enlightenment interest in reason led us to explore our own chaotic moods. There are Bacchic scenes in the music of Debussy, as biographer Stephen Walsh shows in a new study of the French composer. Away from his piano Debussy had to battle professional vendettas, but in pieces such as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Debussy created a world of rich woodland scenes and musical intoxication. Producer: Hannah Sander.
Stephen Walsh, co-founder of Anders Pink, joins Robin to talk about the biggest learning eco-system, which can benefit a company's learning resources and which is right at everyone's fingertips: the Internet. But as Stephen explains, careful content curation is key.
Sharing content with your network is a big part of the social selling process. Sharing content can help build your brand, create trust, provide value, and help create a following. But, what content is the right content? Should you be creating your own or curating others content? The answer is both. Sales today is about creating value and if you want to do that, you have to learn to create and curate. You have good ideas in your respective profession and you need an outlet for those thoughts and experience. On the other side, you need to realize you and your company don't have all the good ideas. To stay relevant you need to curate content from a wide range of sources. Mastering these two concepts puts you in the drivers seat of social selling and puts you on the track to success. In This Episode You’ll Learn: Why content curation is an important part of the sales process What tactics reps take to successfully share relevant content Top strategies to curate and create content for your network

It’s been twelve years since Stephen Walsh last played Tony the grape grower, in the classic Frank Loesser musical ‘The Most Happy Fella,’ at Cinnabar Theater. And to employ an over-picked cliché, in his second run of the show at Cinnabar, Walsh has only gotten better, deeper and rich—like a really, really good wine. The show itself—about romantic complications arising when the much older Tony, an Italian wine-maker in Napa, impulsively leaves a love letter for a San Francisco waitress—is a blend of fantasy romance and soap-opera heartbreak. It’s like something John Steinbeck might have written if asked to pitch an idea for a musical about love. Nicely directed by Elly Lichenstein, with her patented knack for filling the stage with things to look at, the production pivots on the performance of Walsh, who not only sings gorgeously, but nails the role of a love-struck sweetheart who believes he’s too old and unattractive to deserve happiness. Walsh makes Tony’s emotional journey so believable it’s impossible not be happy when happy and devastated when his desperate attempt at love hits snags, which it does from the very beginning. This is hardly light and fluffy musical material. There is real human drama here, and the music—with the exception of the poppy ear-worm ‘Standin’ on a Corner’— is complex and operatic, beautifully light and dark, bubbly and haunting, and occasionally a bit weird. This is the kind of show in which people sing whatever is in their soul, even if that means singing a single name over and over and over. As Amy—who Tony seems to think is named Rosabella—Jennifer Mitchell is charming. She’s especially strong in the early scenes where she is tricked—due to Tony having sent her a photo of his foreman instead of himself—into believing that her coffee shop pen-pal is the young and handsome guy she recognizes from the photo when she arrives at the Vineyard. She’s there in Napa, having impulsively agreed to marry the man she’s been swapping letters with. Mitchell sings beautifully, and plays the early flirtations of love and attraction to lovely effect. When she learns of the deception, a series of actions take place that steer the tale in the direction of tragedy, but never leaves us doubting that true love might somehow be possible for Tony, one way or another, no matter how unlikely. Michael Van Why, as Tony’s optimistic farmhand Herman, is magnificent—like the Scarecrow of Oz crossed with Curly from ‘Oklahoma’—and his guileless courtship of Amy’s friend Cleo—a power-force performance by Krista Wigle—is a nice balance to the rockier romance of Tony and his “Rosabella.” The music, played simply on two pianos and a set of drums, is nicely directed by Mary Chun. There are many reasons to see this show, but in the end, it all comes down to Walsh, who returns to a favorite role after a dozen years, and somehow makes it even better, giving one of the best performances of his career, and easily one of the North Bay’s best musical productions of 2016. ‘The Most Happy Fella’ runs through September 25 at Cinnabar Theater, www.cinnabartheater.org
It’s awards season, and everyone’s talking about who got nominated and who didn’t. And no, I’m not talking about the Oscars. Last week, the San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Circle announced the nominees for its upcoming 29th annual awards ceremony, to be held Monday March 9, at the Victoria Theater in San Francisco. After decades of neglect from the Circle, which simply has had a majority of writers working and watching shows in the City, the East Bay and South Bay, the poor North Bay, and especially Sonoma County, has recently been enjoying a gradual shift in attention from the Circle, of which I am a member. Last year, there were actually a fair number of wins for a few surprised actors, directors and stage artists from North of the Golden Gate. With this year’s announcements though, it’s as if some sort of theatrical earthquake has hit the area, changing the geography so much that even Main Stage West, in far-from-the-Bridge Sebastopol got a number of well-deserved nominations. The reason for the change? It’s a mix of factors, one being simply that more North Bay theater critics have joined the circle of late, at the same time that the ranks of the circle have been declining due to attrition and other factors. So the odds once stacked impenetrably against Sonoma County theater artists are, for the time being, somewhat in our favor. There are, in fact, too many local names to mention all of them here, though I will point out a few highlights, and let you look for yourselves, if you find yourself curious. I’ll give the link to the Critics Circle web site in just a minute. Focusing primarily on Sonoma County, congratulations are due to Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater, snapping up 22 nominations, including a Best Director nod for Sheri Lee Miller, for last year’s spectacular "Of Mice and Men," which also got nominations for Samson Hood for best Principle actor in a play, who played Lennie in the production also nominated for best show and best ensemble. Cinnabar was also awarded several nominations for its production of "The Marriage of Figaro," and for "Fiddler on the Roof," the latter snapping up a nomination for best principle actress for Elly Lichenstein and Best principle actor for Stephen Walsh. Nineteen nominations were awarded to Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse including several for choreography in a musical - congrats to Stacie Ariaga and Joseph Favalora for their work on "Grease" and "Victor/Victoria," both for Stacie, and "Thoroughly Modern Milly," that one for Joe. 6th Street also several got nominations for acting, including a much-deserved nomination for Abbey Lee, stealing every scene and dazzling audience with her hilarious strip-tease seduction in "Victor Victoria," and Larry Williams, doing the same thing, sort of, with exhausting-to-watch energy in the comedy "Boing Boing." Other acting nominations include one for Trevor Hoffman who played Kinicki in 6th Street’s production of "Grease." Other companies honored are Spreckels Performing Arts Center, with a whopping 25 nominations, including acting nods for members of "The Book Of Matthew Liebowits," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Oliver!," and "Bell, Book and Candle," and "Scrooge the Musical". Then there’s Main Stage West, with fourteen nominations, including one for Mary Gannon Graham for her work in "Mother Jones in Heaven," directing nods for Sheri Lee Miller for "T.I.C. Trenchcoat in Common" and Beth Craven for "Yankee Tavern," and acting nominations for Sheri Lee Miller (a good year for her) for her work in "Other Desert Cities," which also got nominations for Sharia Pierce. Whew! These names are just the tip of the iceberg. To read them for yourself, and get info on how you can attend and cheer on our local heroes, go to the website at SFBATCC.ORG, those being, of course, the initials of the San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Circle.
