#560 One Ball and Boe - Richard is sad to note the death of a man who has fuelled and spoiled his erotic fantasies. His guest John Kearns, has finally been allowed into the Leicester Square Theatre on the fifth or sixth time on the pod - it's the thoughtful and measured John Kearns. In a return to endless old-school RHLSTPs it's a sprawling pod, covering very old tortoises, Raymond Briggs, Rich's dad giving a talk at the BFI, the effects of the Taskmaster bounce (or plunge in Rich's case), rumours about Top Coppers and much more. Too much more. Gloriously too much more.See RHLSTP at the Edinburgh Fringe https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/richard-herring-rhlstpSee Richard's tour http://richardherring.com/ballback/tourSee RHLSTP live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. VYS0046 | Ding Dong Merrily On High Strangeness - Vayse to Face to Face with Stephanie Quick and AP Strange: Christmas 2024 - Show Notes Ho, ho, holy shit that's another year gone and Christmas is here again! To mark the ever-increasing speed at which the years fly past in a blur of spiralling anxiety and gathering doom, Hine and Buckley invite two of the nicest, wisest and funniest people in Weirdosphere, Stephanie Quick and AP Strange, to help them celebrate away the winter blues. Drawing on the British tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas, Hine, Buckley, Strange and Quick (also the title of the upcoming Vayse autobiography) work their way around the cardinal points, each telling a ghost story from the place in which they were born: the North and South of England and the East Coast and West Coast of the US. There are tales of a murderous jester who stalks the corridors of a Cumbrian castle to this day; a red haired woman who haunting a pirate-built cottage in New England; a missing bride at a Christmas wedding in a very haunted stately home in Hampshire; and a revolutionary Californian abolitionist who still throws nuts from trees over 120 years after her death... and they discuss three lesser known British winter traditions: Raymond Briggs' Snowman, ignoring Thanksgiving and moaning about the weather... (recorded 8 December 2024) Thanks to AP and Steph for preparing the stories and thanks to Keith for another year of show notes - follow the man on Blue Sky: @peakflow.bsky.social.
today i will be reviewing The Snowman , The Raymond Briggs Animated Christmas Special
A number of bands seem to turn a corner with their third album, and Master of Puppets is no exception. Metallica's third album would achieve both critical and commercial success, crossing out of the new thrash metal sub-genre of hard rock to achieve multi-platinum recognition. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield collaborated with drummer Lars Ulrich as the principal songwriters, creating riffs that were assembled and reassembled over time until they formed a song. The band would then be called in to create a tile and topic for the song, at which point Hetfield would create the lyrics.Master of Puppets peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Although glam metal was on the rise, the band avoided the over-produced, synth-laden sound popular in the era, and stuck to their signature thrash metal sound with political lyrics. The resulting album would consolidate the thrash metal scene, and bring the sound into a more mainstream audience.Unfortunately, the album would also be the last one for which bassist Cliff Burton would be featured. Burton died in September 1986 while the band was on tour in Sweden, and their bus was involved in an accident.Metallica would become a huge group from the late 80's onward, and this album shows the strength of the group in those years when they were just coming into the consciousness of the commercial world.Lynch brings us this highly influential thrash metal album. Fans of the Show Julie Doran and son Zack join us in Wayne's absence for today's podcast. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)The song that concludes side 1 of the album was inspired by Ken Kesey's novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." The lyrics portray the thoughts of a mental patient incorrectly institutionalized in an asylum. The track starts slow and picks up steam as it goes. BatteryThis title could be a reflection of the charge of assault and battery, or it could be inspired by the military hardware of an artillery battery. There is also a connection to the original San Francisco thrash scene, centered on the Old Waldorf club on Battery Street. Control of violent urges is a connection that runs through the piece regardless of the original inspiration.Master of PuppetsCocaine addiction is the master of puppets referenced in this title track. Hetfield had friends experiencing drug addiction, and wrote this track from the perspective of the drug itself, taking over the lives of people. This will be a familiar song to fans of "Stranger Things." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Loved By the Sun by Jon Anderson and Tangerine Dream (from the motion picture “Legend”)This fantasy film starring Tom Cruise and Mia Sara was in the theaters at this time. STAFF PICKS:Your Wildest Dreams by the Moody BluesRob starts off the staff picks with a song that singer and guitarist Justin Heyward wrote while thinking back on his first love. It hit number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, making this song the biggest commercial success for the Moody Blues since "Knights in White Satin."Mothers Talk by Tears for FearsBruce's staff pick was inspired by a mom telling her kids that when they make faces, they will freeze that way. It is also inspired by an anti-nuclear cartoon called "When the Wind Blows" by Raymond Briggs. The song was written by Roland Orzabal and Ian Stanley, and first performed in 1983. It went to number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kiss by Prince & the RevolutionJulie features a chart topping hit and lead single from Prince's eighth studio album, "Parade." The song is more acoustic and stripped down than prior Prince hits, and Warner Bros. didn't want to release it as a single. However, Prince insisted on both its inclusion on the album and its release as a single.Addicted to Love by Robert PalmerLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that may be more famous for its video featuring models pretending to play the instruments. Palmer originally wanted to sing this song as a duet with Chaka Kahn, but was prevented from doing so by legal issues. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Songbird by Kenny G.You just can't go wrong with a sax as we close out today's podcast. The 2022 Fantasy/Animation Christmas special is here, with Chris and Alex well and truly ‘walking in the air' (!) for Episode 110 of the podcast as they wonder at the delights of The Snowman (Dianne Jackson, 1982), the 26-minute television special released on Channel 4 in the early 1980s and based on Raymond Briggs' picture book. Joining them for this tale of festive fantasy and to celebrate the film's 40th anniversary is Dr James Walters, who is Reader in Film and Television Studies in the Department of Film and Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham. James' work embraces film and television aesthetics, and he is the author of two monographs regularly cited on the podcast - Fantasy Film: A Critical Introduction (2011) and Alternative Worlds in Hollywood Cinema (2008) - among other recent work on television comedy and performance. Listen as they discuss the relationship between British and Hollywood fantasy cinema in the 1980s; the contribution of Channel 4 to the evolution of British television animation; depth, energy, movement, and sincerity in The Snowman's cosy construction of fantasy, and the spectators' ability to ‘take off' with its defining images of flight; childhood and the power of snow as an enchanting (if always fleeting) force; texture, detail, and stillness in Brigg's original drawings; divisions between interior/order and exterior/chaos; and the way that fantasy - like Christmas - can mean different things to different people. Oh, and there's a bit about David Bowie too. Happy holidays! **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**
In this episode of 25 Days of Christmas, Patricia and Carlene discuss about the 1982 British Christmas special The Snowman based on a book of the same name by Raymond Briggs as a request by listener PhantomKitten. A young boy named James builds a snowman and is surprised when it comes to life. He brings the snowman into his house, shows him around the living room, the kitchen, his parents' room, his bedroom, and riding his father's motorcycle. The snowman takes James to the North Pole where Santa and the other snowmen throw a party. James and the snowman have a strong friendship at that magical night, but the next day is a strong showcase that it doesn't last forever. This is Carlene's very first time watching this classic Christmas special. What are her first impressions on it? What did they think of it overall? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

In a sizzlingly hot show we mop our brows with Thomas Hardy, the wonder of Dandy Nichols, Judith Durham, Olivia Newton-John and Raymond Briggs, and that most upmarket Malc, the piano tuner plus, predictably, Tenko.
Darren reflects on how Raymond Briggs has had a lasting impact on his practice, before turning his attention to Socrates and how Socratic question is/can be/should be used in classrooms.
Juliet and Terence on: TikTok pranks; the relegation of both the football results and Paul O'Grady; and farewell to Raymond Briggs, Olivia Newton John, and Lamont Dozier. {James Alexander Gordon}
Big thanks to our podcast listeners in this episode, who made suggestions for the best film soundtrack albums ever, and helped us with the question “Is the second-last track on an album the weakest?” No spoilers here: for the answer, and to see if you got a mention, you'll have to listen in! You'll also discover ElTele's “campest film theme of all time”.Popular culture lost so many stars this month: we say goodbye to Olivia Newton John, Bernard Cribbins, Raymond Briggs, David Warner, Nichelle Nichols, Darryl Hunt of the Pogues and ace Motown tunesmith Lamont Dozier (see a playlist of his tunes below).The Captain finishes off the final Inspector Montalbano novel, tells the odd tale of its publication, and also gives a positive mention to British crime drama Sherwood, chock full of acting talent. ElTele has discovered Along for the Ride, with comedian David O'Doherty.Show notes and links at https://www.onlyapodcast.com/episode-21-soundtracks-and-second-last-tracks/

The author and illustrator of the classic children's book The Snowman, Raymond Briggs, has died at the age of 88. The wordless children's picture book published in 1978 has gone on to sell more than 5.5m copies in various formats around the world. The Snowman was turned into a Bafta TV Award-winning animated TV film in 1982. Both journalist Charlotte Higgins and playwright David Greig are fascinated by the Roman occupation of Britain. Higgins's book Under Another Sky: Journeys in Roman Britain, an account of her travels to the Roman remains scattered about Britain, is really about how we today relate to Roman Britain. It seems an unlikely subject for a play but Greig has adapted it for the stage and they both talk to Samira Ahmed about the project. Did the Romans bring civilisation to these islands? Were they violent imperialists? Did British history really begin once they had left? And what of the society that was here already when the Romans arrived? Front Row celebrates the life of author and illustrator Raymond Briggs who has died aged 88. He became famous for his books The Snowman, Father Christmas, Fungus The Bogeyman and his parable of nuclear war When The Wind Blows – all of which were also made into films or TV programmes. American documentary maker Immy Humes has spent the last five years mining the archives for photographs of lone women in majority male environments, from 1862 to the present day, for her book The Only Woman. And British art historian Aindrea Emelife has also been mining the archives, searching for images of black women from 1793 to the present, for her exhibition Black Venus at the Fotografiska Gallery in New York. They join Samira to discuss issues of representation, tokenism and the female gaze in visual culture, past and present. BAFTA-winning writer and director Stefan Golaszewski talks to Samira about his upcoming BBC One Drama, Marriage, starring Sean Bean and Nicola Walker as a couple navigating the ups and downs of a 30-year relationship. By gum we haven't had one of these since our own mother came on the show. Today it is our infinite pleasure to present to you the fantastic author/illustrator/cartoonist Ursula Murray Husted of, amongst other things, the marvelous graphic novel A Cat Story. A fan of the podcast, it seemed only fitting to ask her to suggest a title for the show today. Her choice? A book that honestly I've never seen before. Lulu and the Flying Babies is an obvious homage to, say, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs, and its creator started out by making comics before she made books for kids. And as it just so happens Ursula started out that way too! This is an absolutely fascinating example of a picture book working with this level of comic book paneling. And, of course, at some point we do include the line, "I had no idea how easy it was to decapitate a cat." Show Notes: You can check out some of the range of Posy Simmonds' when it comes to her darker adult comics here: https://www.lambiek.net/artists/s/simmonds_posy.htm We bring up the question of which Posy Simmonds books are available for purchase in the states. If you're only interested in her children's books then besides this title check out Lulu and the Chocolate Wedding and Fred. It's not a lot but it's what we got! Ursula Recommends: The King of Confidence by Miles Harvey Kate Recommends: Songfinch, Putt Shack, and the new Bob's Burgers movie. Betsy Recommends: Making a birthday cake based on Erin Hunter's Warriors series. Jenny talks about a cheerful little Cold War animated film from the UK in which two lovable pensioners slowly die of radiation poisoning after a nuclear missile hits Sussex. It’s based on the graphic novel by Raymond Briggs (of The Snowman fame) and would make a great companion piece with Threads.
We are joined by author-illustrator Nadia Shireen and writer Andrew Male for a smellybration of Fungus the Bogeyman (1977) by the great Raymond Briggs, the much-loved and bestselling picture book Andrew describes as "the children's Anatomy of Melancholy". We consider Briggs's life and work in full: Father Christmas, The Snowman, When the Wind Blows, Ethel & Ernest and the sepulchral Time For Lights Out (2019), his latest - and perhaps last - book; we also hear several times from the (often very funny) author himself. Also in this episode Andy talks about issues raised by reading Laugh a Defiance, a long out-of-print memoir by campaigner Mary Richardson; while John shares his enthusiasm for Jessica Au's new novel, Cold Enough For Snow (Fitzcarraldo). It's here! After much anticipation, hype and mystery surrounding the newest addition the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we get the most anticipated superhero film since Avengers Endgame. How much of the hype, rumors and cameos are true? How was the marketing of the film handled to cover up some of the film's shock and awe moments? Let's chime in on future connections, the future of the Sony / Marvel partnership and of course, easter eggs. On this Retro Rewind, we turn back the clock to 1982 and visit the timeless Christmas classic adapted from the 1978 children's book of the same title, "The Snowman," by Raymond Briggs. The cartoonist, writer and illustrator Posy Simmonds brilliantly captures the ambitions and pretensions of the literary world, and the journalist and curator Paul Gravett has worked in comics publishing for decades. Together they bring graphic novels and comic books to the foreground with the Slightly Foxed team. We draw moral lessons from the Ally Sloper cartoons of the 1870s, glimpse Frans Masereel's wordless woodcut stories of the 1920s, view the pictorial politics of Citizen 13660 by Miné Okubo in the 1940s and revisit Art Spiegelman's 1992 Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus before taking a closer look at more contemporary works. From a tragicomic summer with Joff Winterhart, nuclear explosions with Raymond Briggs, the shadow of James Joyce with Mary and Bryan Talbot and an Iranian childhood with Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, the discussion moves through panels, frames, splashes and spreads to Posy Simmonds's own methods in bringing literature to life, including crosshatching to Vivaldi. Originally serialized in the Guardian, Posy's Gemma Bovery builds on the bones of Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Tamara Drewe draws from Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd, while Cassandra Darke takes inspiration from Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Though rooted in the classics, the devil is in Posy's detail, be it real French coffee pots, the joy of characters' names, such as Kevin Penwallet, and fictional places, such as Tresoddit. We continue our travels off the beaten track with our usual round-up of reading recommendations, and a trip to Gilbert White's House and Gardens in Hampshire, where we view the landscapes that sparked his evergreen classic The Natural History of Selborne. Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics! In this week's episode, Julia, Thom, and Anthony hop a plane across the pond to cover the 1991, British-animated holiday special, "Father Christmas" - based on the book by Raymond Briggs. Does this cartoon do more for Anthony and Thom than "The Snowman" did? Does Julia, who is normally the most kind to these foreign specials, find her heart warmed by the most curmudgeonly Santa covered since perhaps Ed Asner's in "Elf"? Tune in to find out the answers to these questions, in addition to much more random discussion, in this fun, festive episode that will give you all of the Ber Month feels! And if you want more "Tis the Podcast" goodness, make sure to check your feeds this upcoming Thursday, September 16th, to hear Chapter 33 of “Another Christmas Story” entitled “I'll be Home for Christmas”, which everybody's favorite elf, Julia Colburn herself, will be reading to you! Enjoy, y'all!
Becoming a children's author and illustrator (part 2): The legendary children's author Julia Donaldson & new children's author and illustrator Ted Chaplin talk to We'd Like A Word presenters Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan about how to create really good stories for young readers. Julia is the former Children's Laureate and the author of A Squash And A Squeeze, The Gruffalo, The Smartest Giant in Town, Stickman and more than a hundred books read by and to children, again and again and again. Many of them illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Now Julia is curating an online course to pass on her advice - and the advice of other experts - to other people who would like to become children's authors. It's under the auspices of the BBC Maestro series. You can find more details by following this link https://www.bbcmaestro.com/courses/julia-donaldson/writing-children-s-picture-books - 27 lessons lasting 6.5 hours, costing £80 In the meantime, Julia some surprising revelations for We'd Like A Word listeners. But what about Ted Chaplin - he's been at the top of the movie animation tree for a long time - working Farmageddon (Shaun the Sheep), Early Man, the Pirates in an Adventure with Scientists, Captain Scarlet, and Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull (but it wasn't his fault - if you've seen the film, you'll know what we mean). But now he's moving into writing and illustrating children's picture stories. It's been more than a year since presenters Paul and Stevyn have been able to get together face-to-face to interview a guest - due to covid - but in this episode we meet in Ted Chaplin's workshop, (which is a lot tidier looking than Steve's, I can tell you). We see Ted's work-in-progress - including a very very cute sloth-like creature. We also talk about Jed Mercurio, The Scarecrow's Wedding, Korky Paul, Strictly Come Dancing and the Great British Bake-Off, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Wolly Bear Caterpillar, the Gruffalo, Princess Mirabelle, the Beth and Ginny stories, The Hobbit, The Wind in the Willows, Hamnett by maggie O'Farrell, Scopp by Evelyn Waugh, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, Brian Blessed, The Pirates in an Adventure with Scientists, Aardman Animation, The Imaginarium and Andy Serkis, the Highway Rat, David Tennant, Axel Scheffler, secret codes in movie making, Doctor Who and Star Wars, The Postscript Murders by Elly Griffiths, The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, Rockabye Rumpus, Oi Frog by Kes Gray, Running on the Cracks, Enid Blyton, Kenneth Grahame, Richmal Crompton's Just William books, The Borrowers, E Nesbit, Judith Kerr, Quentin Blake, Raymond Briggs, smashing a Blue Peter trophy, Pride and Prejudice, favourite writing or drawing implements, Mr Men, Spot the Dog, Captain Scarlet, Cat Deeley, Black Panther, the Hulk, Ant and Dec, bums and farts, a Kookaburra and Faber pencils. We'd Like A Word is a podcast & radio show from authors Paul Waters & Stevyn Colgan. We talk with writers, readers, editors, agents, celebrities, talkers, poets, publishers, booksellers, audiobook creators about books - fiction & non-fiction. We go out on various radio & podcast platforms. Our website is www.wedlikeaword.com - which is where you'll find information about Paul & Steve & our guests. We're also on Twitter @wedlikeaword & Facebook @wedlikeaword & our email is wedlikeaword@gmail.com - & yes, we are slightly embarrassed by the missing apostrophes. We like to hear from you - your questions, thoughts, ideas, guest or book suggestions. Perhaps you'd like to come on We'd Like A Word in person, to chat, review, meet writers or read out passages from books. And if you're still stuck for something to read, may we recommend Blackwatertown by Paul Waters or The Diabolical Club by Stevyn Colgan.

Across the world, families have traditional rituals to celebrate the relentless and depressing march towards the dead of winter and this year, with the added bonus of a global pandemic thrown into the equation and the near constant assault on our collective mental health that this brings, why not start a new tradition by listening to some idiots banging on about movies? I'm talking about the Bad Dads of course, and with any luck some of our inane chatter might distract you from the very real worries about illness, death, the economy, social unrest etc which will all still be there after the hour and a half you spend listening to our drivel.There's nothing more festive than inflicting horrific injuries on yourself, whether it be from over-eating on Christmas day or a suicide attempt gone wrong, so sit back, don't relax because let's face it that's impossible and listen to us discuss our Top 5 memorable movie injuries. Maybe your favourite movie maiming made the cut?Somewhat improbably, Howie had never seen Gremlins. A Christmas Gremlin virgin if you will, which given the time of year seems incredibly apt. Then even more astonishingly we found that our one time collaborator and Bad Dad regular listener, Adam, from the Sleeperwire podcast had also never seen Gremlins. So Dan was bumped from the schedule and we sat down to chat about this Christmas movie (or this movie set at Christmas if you prefer) with our virginal friends. You will literally hear us talking about this movie! For free! Amazing.We finished up this extravaganza with a look at Raymond Briggs' 1982's The Snowman. A British classic, we had no idea whether this permeated the cultural zeitgeist in other countries, so having Adam on to share his perspective was always going to be enlightening. A meditation on love, life and the inevitability of death, what could be more appropriate to conclude this weeks episode? Thanks once again for tuning in. We hope you are well wherever you are and that you make it through this utterly barren time of year. If you are interested in being depressed by us, you can usually find us annoying people on twitter - @dads_film, on facebook or even on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com.Until next time, we remain...Bad Dads
A classical Christmas tale read by Ismael Masilla and written by Raymond Briggs.

Chris Riddell is an illustrator, author of children’s books and a political cartoonist. From 2015 to 2017, he was the Children’s Laureate, and he has won three Greenaway Medals for his work – more than any other illustrator. He was born in 1962 in Cape Town, South Africa, where his parents were both anti-apartheid activists. They moved to the UK when Chris was a year old. He grew up first in rural England, and later in south London where his father, a vicar, became chaplain of Brixton Prison. He started drawing as a young boy when he was given paper and pencils by his mother to keep him quiet during his father’s sermons. After school, he studied illustration under Raymond Briggs at Brighton Polytechnic and received his first commission while still at art school. As a writer his work ranges from picture books to chapter book series including Ottoline and Goth Girl, and as an illustrator he has frequently collaborated with authors such as Paul Stewart and Neil Gaiman. He started as a political cartoonist in the late 1980s and has drawn the Observer’s weekly cartoon since 1995, celebrating 25 years at the paper this year. As Children's Laureate, he encouraged children to draw, and championed the importance of school libraries and librarians. Chris is married to Jo, a fellow illustrator and printmaker, with whom he has three grown-up children, among them Katy, another illustrator. #250 CBE? - Back to the Winchester Theatre Royal for the second week running and Richard is annoyed at his child’s teacher’s money-making schemes. His guest was also the final guest of the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe run where Richard tried to run the podcast into the ground (dare he do it again?) it’s John Kearns.It’s a giddy and self-indulgent podcast where most of the material is deemed too shoddy or contentious for broadcast, but takes in a possible return for a much-loved comedy hero, the possible return of Top Coppers, the leap of faith required to follow your comedy path, tracing Raymond Briggs, disappointing children at the Science Museum and whether John will be getting a lift home. It’s weird, it’s wonderful and it feels like the birth of an amazing, awkward, intergenerational double act. If you enjoy it half as much as Richard seems to then you should have a good time.See John on tour https://www.chortle.co.uk/comics/j/33876/john_kearnsSUPPORT THE SHOW!Become a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITESee details of the RHLSTP TOUR DATESBuy DVDs and Books from GO FASTER STRIPE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

1 hour 43 min podcast version. Not safe for work. Contains some swearing and adult themes. Interesting people talk about the music, films and music for films which have shaped their lives. Roz Kaveney, Tim Concannon and their guest Andrew Smith wander down busy Caledonian Road in North London, to Housmans peace bookshop near to Kings Cross station. They discuss two linked technologies produced by the atomic age, computers and nuclear arms, and the ways that the peace movement and radicalism have responded to both being part of modern armed conflict. The starting point for the conversation is Pete Watkins’s 1965 film for the BBC, banned from broadcast at the time, ‘The War Game‘. Made two decades before ‘Threads‘ and Raymond Briggs’s ‘Where the Wind Blows‘, Pete Watkins’s film is a documentary-style depiction of Britain under nuclear attack. It was withdrawn before transmission by the BBC under government pressure, but went on to win an Oscar for Best Documentary. Caledonian Road is notable for two things: its longstanding Irish community and Housmans Bookshop, opened in 1959 and named after Laurence Houseman the gay, pacifist playwright who suggested the Peace Pledge Union establish a permanent base in 1948. As well as publishing Peace News, it became a focus of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament . The two worlds converged in 1974 when an IRA bomb blew up the pillar box outside the shop. The explosion incinerated all the copies of Campaign Against Arms Trade’s first newsletter. Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the writer and illustrator Raymond Briggs. For millions of children, Christmas would be incomplete without Briggs's story The Snowman, which has been shown on television every year since its first release, in 1982, and his enduringly popular Father Christmas. Raymond was born in 1934 in Wimbledon. His mother, Ethel, was a lady's maid and his father, Ernest, a milkman. He wanted to draw cartoon strips from an early age but, at art school, found his tutors looked down on his aspirations. After leaving, he quickly secured work as a commercial artist, doing illustrations for advertisements, journals and books. He said he was so appalled at the standard of the children's books he was asked to illustrate he thought he could do better himself. And he did - his first attempt was immediately accepted for publication and he went on to twice win the Kate Greenaway Medal - the principal award for illustration.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Parce Mihi Domine (from Officium Defunctorum) by Christobal de Morales Book: Complete Works of Beachcomber by J B Morton Luxury: A full-size billiard table with Radio 4 built into each of the legs
